Back in July, we posted a story from the Fangoria Weekend Of Horror convention in NJ about filmmaker Lamberto Bava and his proposed 4-picture MASTERS OF ITALIAN HORROR. (See that original story HERE) Today, FANGORIA checked in with the director and he confirmed several new details about the upcoming exciting series of movies.

"My film is called ROOM 213. It’s all about a crime that has happened under strange circumstances, although it is not very violent. I intend to create tension and suspense with this movie, because I like it when horror is psychological—when it is all in your mind." He continues, "The title of Ruggero Deodato’s episode is NATAS—Satan spelled backwards. His film is very fantastic, very unreal. Sergio Stivaletti is doing an episode called THE BUILDING, which is a mystery-suspense story: ‘What happened in the building?’ And the fourth will be directed by the Manetti Brothers, who are young but very good. This will be based on an H.P. Lovecraft story."

The article states that the production start date is summer of 2009. For more details and quotes from Bava, check FANGORIA's original article HERE!

The following is an interview that took place in NY with several journalists present, all fielding different questions. We are presenting you with the entire transcript; questions from ICONS are noted. Beware of mild spoilers. FRIGHT friend Debbie Rochon alerted us to a screening this Sunday night, October 19th of her latest film COLOUR FROM THE DARK at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater. Rochon will be in attendance along with director Ivan Zuccon and star Michael Segal (flying all the way in from Italy!) Based on an H.P. Lovecraft story, this will mark the film's first screening in America! Visit the Two Boots site for more details HERE! And purchase tickets for Sunday night's screening HERE!

From the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft and the vision of director Ivan Zuccon comes a new tale of cinematic terror. Based on the classic story "The Colour Out of Space", COLOUR FROM THE DARK is the follow-up to Ivan's forthcoming film, NYMPHA.

The 1940's, and World War II is raging. Pietro (Michael Segal) and Lucia (Debbie Rochon) live on an isolated farm with Alice, Lucia's younger sister (Marysia Kay). Alice is a 15 year old who suffers from severe mental problems. Poor farmers, they live tilling the soil. Pietro is a good worker and a strong man who, unlike his three brothers, is not at war because of a deformed knee.

Lucia is a beautiful and reserved woman dedicated to her family. Their life is peaceful and good, in spite of the hard work. One day, while drawing water from the well, Pietro and Alice produce a casual and apparently insignificant incident, which frees something from Earth's womb. A strange and alien colour flashes underwater, at the well's bottom, then disappears. From that moment on, inexplicable events start happening all around the farm, and by night the surrounding vegetation glitters with a sinister glow.

The colour soon takes hold of the whole farm, and dwelling inside Pietro and his family's minds, it brings them into its sick world of pain, blood and death...

Eric Red Adapting Jack Ketchum's OFF SEASON!

It seems plenty of Jack Ketchum's material is finally being adapted into feature films! There's Chris Sivertson's THE LOST, as well as last year's THE GIRL NEXT DOOR. RED is just about to hit DVD shelves, and it was recently announced that Andrew Van Den Houten would be directing OFFSPRING. Now, following a screening of 100 FEET at this year's Screamfest in Hollywood, Eric Red revealed that he'll be directing OFF SEASON.

Red told Shock Till You Drop, "Dallas [Jack Ketchum] and I have known each other for years and we've been talking about making this one. It's time, it's the perfect time to do it." Ketchum's OFF SEASON was originally published in 1981 and loosely inspired by the story of Sawney Bean (the basis of THE HILLS HAVE EYES and DEATH LINE aka RAW MEAT). Eric Red explained his take to Shock: "A great horror movie is a group of people trapped in an isolated setting against a monster. The difference with this is that it's going to be 100% convincing and hardcore and extreme. You couldn't have made the film ten years ago, but now I think you can take this as far as you can go. But we're going to stay very true to the book: Low-key, small, very shocking."

Red, the writer of such noted genre fare as NEAR DARK and THE HITCHER is also attached to direct NIGHTLIFE, a vampire story he scripted.

Bloody Good Horror recently chatted with JACK BROOKS: MONSTER SLAYER director Jon Knautz and the topic of a sequel came up. "Yes, we're definitely doing a sequel, for sure," Knautz told BGH. "We're quite far into development. We knew we didn't have the money to do a full blown action/horror movie with part 1, we just didn't have the money. So the gameplan was to make a movie about a guy who becomes a monster slayer, and then the action hits you at the end. With Part 2 now, we're looking to raise quite a bit more money... people will get what they want in this one for sure, if they like the end of the first one."

In terms of plot, he continues, "There will be new characters, and Jack sort of partners up with someone else. Actually, It's more like they are forced to work with each other. He kind of gets caught up in this scenario where he's taken advantage of and then realizes later on that he was sort of used to kill monsters he wasn't necessarily supposed to kill, and it kind of leads him into this whole new adventure he gets caught up in."

You can read the entire interview over on Bloody Good Horror's site HERE.

UPDATED: Adam Green & Joe Lynch's FRIGHTFEST Short Films Now On-Line!

Those fine filmmaking fiends Adam Green and Joe Lynch had something really special planned this year for the audience of the annual UK FRIGHTFEST. The duo created 5 short films, all loose parodies of the opening scene of THE TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, to debut each night of the film festival, and from what we've heard... these guys stole the show.

Green, the writer/director of HATCHET and SPIRAL, and Lynch the director of WRONG TURN 2 both have had successful screenings of their films at the festival, so this was their special treat for the fans.

Now, YOU, the US fans can watch them too! (Be sure to refresh the page to see the latest embedded shorts!)

[REC] Directors Show Off Faux Trailers For DAMNED FRIDAY & THE EXORCIST 5!

The directing duo behind one of my favorite horror films this year, the Spanish flick [REC] (just remade for America as QUARANTINE) have put together a few fake trailers for a website called Teaserland.com. More accurately, it's a site for a film festival put on by Sitges organizer Xavi Bru where filmmakers are are encouraged to create fictional trailers for movies they'd like to see. [REC] co-director Paco Plaza just posted a teaser for MALDITO VIERNES (DAMNED FRIDAY). (Translation of the voice over:: "Vampires don`t exist...everyone knows that. Nothing unusual happened last night...just a regular Friday night, like any other. I didn´t run into anyone, no one attacked me. Nothing unusual happened. Vampires don´t exist...everyone knows that.")

Just underneath that at the Teaserland webpage, you'll also see [REC] co-director Jaume Balagueró's teaser trailer for THE EXORCIST 5. Quite frankly, after experiencing [REC], these directors have incredible style and unique sensibilities for the genre. Let's hope it's not too long before their next feature length film. (Which is supposedly a sequel to [REC])

Head on over to Teaserland.com and check out the trailers for yourself.

(*Note: I personally had trouble getting them to play in Firefox. However, they played fine in Internet Explorer.)

Filmmaker Christopher P. Garetano has officially launched COTTONMOUTH.TV, a new website dedicated to celebrating all things spooky for the entire month of October and leading up to the premiere of his new short film COTTONMOUTH, based upon the Steve Bissette strip from the legendary comic book GORE SHRIEK Issue One!

At the site, you can access several FREE videos. See the COTTONMOUTH trailer at "THE FILM" section. "TRICKS" offers you a chance to investigate "The Lab" and learn how to do make-up FX with basic store bought items. Hosted by WICKED EFX's Jay Alvino! There's also "On The Set", a weekly series of featurettes that will show you the behind the scenes of COTTONMOUTH. "Horror Theaters" gives you even more trailers for upcoming projects by Garetano including a 10 minute preview of MONTAUK UNVEILED, his creepy new documentary! Check it ALL out for FREE at:

Vengeful ghouls from beyond the grave… Special effects make-up… True ghost stories… A horror movie premiere…

One place where you can find all of these things and more is COTTONMOUTH.TV.

Created by Christopher P. Garetano (Horror Business), COTTONMOUTH.TV is a celebration of horror movies, comic books and Halloween. The forthcoming website was initially conceived as a unique venue to premiere the short film of the same name. Directed by Garetano, Cottonmouth is a meticulously crafted mini-movie that aims to scare the hell out of its audience.

In 1986 artist Steve Bissette (Swamp Thing, Taboo) crafted a three-page horror story that was published in the pages of an underground horror comic titled Gore Shriek. Cottonmouth is his macabre story of four angry ghosts who take their revenge on the “company man” who was responsible for their deaths. Now filmmaker Christopher P. Garetano has brought Cottonmouth to life for the Internet generation.

On October 1, 2008, COTTONMOUTH.TV will go live, first with a variety of short vignettes, and then with Cottonmouth the movie premiering on October 31st. The vignettes will include behind-the-scenes footage of Cottonmouth, “How to Make a Monster” with Wicked Effects makeup artist Jay Alvino, the eerie music of Chris Alexander, a history of horror comics with Steve Bissette and Trevor Cook, true ghost stories, and a special Halloween episode of the Internet show America’s Bad Kids.

Cottonmouth merchandise will also be available from the site but the movie and other viewing content is all free. Visitors are encouraged (but not obligated) to donate to one of two charities that include a prominent cancer research foundation and an organization for a rare disease called Penthigus.

Further information regarding the charities will be available on Cottonmouth.TV in the “treats” section.

For more information log onto COTTONMOUTH.TV on or after October 1, 2008.

Brief Teaser Trailer For THE CHILDREN, Formally THE DAY!

Joblo.com posted a brief (and we do mean brief) teaser trailer for the UK production THE CHILDREN, formally known as THE DAY. THE CHILDREN was written & directed by Tom Shankland based on a story by Paul Andrew Williams and stars Rachel Shelley (TV's GHOST WHISPERER), Stephen Campbell Moore, Eva Birthistle, Eva Sayer, Jeremy Sheffield (Christopher Smith's CREEP). What seems like a normal trip to their auntie's and uncle's soon turns into a disaster as uncle Robbie is mysteriously killed after appearing to fall off a sledge. Then, mysterious child like figures from the forest start attacking. Check out the teaser trailer below! Looks creepy enough!

Edward Furlong Joins Cast Of NIGHT OF THE DEMONS!

Shock Till You Drop got word from Seven Arts Pictures that Edward Furlong (TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY) has joined the cast of NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, which begins principle photography today in New Orleans, Louisiana. From MULBERRY STREET To STAKE LAND! Latest From Jim Mickle!

I really enjoyed the hell out of filmmaker Jim Mickle's MULBERRY STREET, which was part of last year's 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR from the AFTER DARK FEST. Now, FANGORIA has revealed Mickle's follow-up film, titled STAKE LAND. Whereas MULBERRY STREET was Mickle and co-writer Nick Damici's take on zombies (rat zombies, no less), STAKE LAND will be their take on vampires! Glass Eye Pix Larry Fesseden is producing and told FANGO, "Yes, it’s got vampires in it. MULBERRY STREET's Nick Damici will star and co-write it again with Jim, and the same MULBERRY STREET stable of cast and crew will be back. We start shooting in New York City this November."

As far as Fesseden, he hinted to FANGO that he's up for a Hollywood remake, but no details yet.

Check out our FRIGHT exclusive interviews with both Jim Mickle and Larry Fessenden below by clicking their respective frames!

SPLINTER Trailer & Images!

Apple's website has the trailer for SPLINTER, the new horror film directed by Toby Wilkins (THE GRUDGE 3) and starring Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, Jill Wagner (BLADE: THE SERIES) & Rachel Kerbs. Check out the trailer HERE! (Already downloaded it to my iPhone!) Meanwhile, Shock Till You Drop has a slew of images from SPLINTER, which you can access HERE or by clicking the image below!

synopsis: A young couple has retreated to the wilderness for a romantic camping weekend-but the trip quickly spirals into a nightmare when they are car-jacked by an escaped convict and his girlfriend. Thrown together by chance, no one can imagine the terrifying horror that awaits the two couples at a remote and isolated gas station.

FANGORIA recently caught up with former "Leatherface" actor Gunnar Hansen (most recently seen in Stevan Mena's BRUTAL MASSACRE: A COMEDY as the drunken, foul mouthed Krenshaw) and he teased about his upcoming role in John Russo's ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD, the new feature adaptation of the successful Avatar comic-book series also penned by Russo.

He tells FANGO, "This is a really brilliant role. My character is a biker; he gets zombified and then becomes the lead ghoul. It’s going to be great fun, and yeah, I’m not just making a cameo appearance in this. To me, there is nothing better than being a zombie, so I’m really looking forward to that, and it will be great to be in one of the LIVING DEAD movies. This is a John Russo script and I have known him for a long time, so when I heard he was doing another LIVING DEAD, I was excited at the prospect of being one."

Russo gave us the latest on ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD in this preview news report HERE!

William Lustig Talks MANIAC COP 4! And MANIAC Remake?!

Last month, we reported that William Lustig and Larry Cohen were planning another MANIAC COP film. (News post HERE!) Now, FANGORIA caught up with the filmmaker and gave a status update on MANIAC COP 4! "We’re going to reinvent the series with MANIAC COP 4,” Lustig told FANGO. “We want to start fresh. We replowed the field already." He also confirmed that actor Robert Z'Dar would in fact be reprising the role of Matt Cordell aka the "maniac cop".

Also of note is the fact that his other seminal horror flick MANIAC might be in line for the remake treatment. "The MANIAC remake keeps threatening to happen, I’ve been talking [with various parties] for nine months to untangle the rights. I think it will happen." The original 1981 slasher cult-classic starred Joe Spinell (THE GODFATHER) in the title role, and Lustig believes it'll be tough to find someone to replace him. "I can’t imagine anyone else in that role."

THE GATE: 20 YEAR LATER Not Happening Anymore?

There's been no word on the proposed 3D sequel to THE GATE, THE GATE: 20 YEARS LATER since our last news post back in May. (Click HERE!) Attached to direct was FX guru Randall William Cook who did the FX on the original, as well as on genre flicks such as FRIGHT NIGHT, I MADMAN, GHOSTBUSTERS, a few of Full Moon's PUPPET MASTER movies, and most recently Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and KING KONG. Randy Cook was present for a recent FRIGHT NIGHT commentary session for ICONS OF FRIGHT, which took place prior to the FRIGHT NIGHT reunion screening at the Nuart and admitted to ICONS staffer Tim Sullivan that THE GATE sequel wasn't happening anymore. At least not with his involvement. Apparently, the "script was terrible" and the producers putting the project together wouldn't give Cook the opportunity to work on it further to get it more to his liking. Looks like we'll just have to break out the original if we want our GATE fix...

The original THE GATE was directed by Tibor Takacs from a script by Michael Nankin and starred Stephen Dorff, Louis Tripp, Christa Denton and Carl Kraines.

Check out our vintage FRIGHT exclusive interview with the writer/director of the original THE GATE (and it's sequel) TIBOR TAKAS! (Click the frame to read it!)

FRIDAY THE 13TH Trailer With SAW V?!

Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that the trailer to Platinum Dunes FRIDAY THE 13TH remake will be attached to prints of SAW V when it hits theaters on October 24th. I don't often get excited at the news of trailers being attached to movies because I always end up going to the one theater that doesn't play the trailer I'm eagerly expecting and the disappointment distracts me from enjoying said movie. Regardless, we can assume this means the FRIDAY THE 13TH trailer will pop up on-line around that October 24th date as well. We'll keep you posted. B-D's original post HERE!

The new FRIDAY THE 13TH directed by Marcus Nispel and written by Damian Shannon & Mark Swift (FREDDY VS JASON) stars Jared Padalecki (SUPERNATURAL), Derek Mears (HILLS HAVE EYES 2), Amanda Righetti, Danielle Panabaker, Travis Van Winkle, Aaron Yoo, Adam Finberg, Nick Mennell (ROB ZOMBIE'S HALLOWEEN), Jonathan Sadowski, Nana Visitor, Arlen Escarpeta, Ryan Hansen, Richard Burgi, Julianna Guill and Willa Ford. It hits theaters Friday, February 13th, 2009!

SAW V was directed by David Hackl & written by screenwriting duo Marcus Dunstan & Patrick Melton (FEAST, new HELLRAISER) and stars Tobin Bell, Julie Benz, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson, Mark Rolston, Samantha Lemole, Meagan Good, Betsy Russell, Carlo Rota, Greg Bryk and Laura Gordon. It opens October 24th, 2008!

ICONS first met writer/director Paul Solet while he was on the promotional tour in support of MEANS TO AN END, his collaboration with Jake Hamilton which was one of the featured shorts on the 2nd FANGORIA BLOOD DRIVE DVD. Almost immediately upon our initial conversations, we knew that we had found not only a life-long friend, but a budding filmmaker to look out for. One who had grand ambitions of trying new and different things within the horror genre. Cut a year later to his follow-up short film GRACE, which premiered at the LA FANGORIA WEEKEND OF HORRORS convention back in 2006. Solet had taken the stage with actor Brian Austin Green and the corpse of his latest creation, dead baby Grace proudly strapped to his body for all to see. Besides being a talented writer, Solet proved at that appearance that he was both a showman to a genre based crowd, and a man with a really sick & twisted sense of humor. (Something we can all relate to.)

A year after that, ICONS had formally introduced Solet to fellow filmmaker Adam Green (the writer/director of HATCHET & SPIRAL), who would eventually go on to produce the feature length version of GRACE, which completed production earlier this year. Written and directed by Solet, the feature length version stars Jordan Ladd (CABIN FEVER, DEATH PROOF) as Madeline, the mother who would do anything to help sustain the life of her baby Grace. Gabrielle Rose, Samantha Ferris, Malcolm Stewart, Stephen Park and Serge Houde round out the ensemble cast of this Cronenberg-esque tale of a mother's undying love. We had the chance to sit down with Solet for lunch at Roscoe’s and we got a full update on the feature length version of GRACE!

Firstly, we asked Solet how the editing process has been thus far on GRACE. "We had a really fast post-production, but I had the exact right editor. Darrin Navarro, who cut BUG for Billy Friedkin and he's worked with Friedkin for the last 12 years. I'm pretty hands-on with every frame. But once you've worked with William Friedkin, that shit is not going to be a problem for you. So, Darrin was amazing. He brought a lot to the table, he really understood we were making a sophisticated genre film but in a restrained way. He got that this was about psychology and atmosphere and character. That was where we were going to hit you. It does become visceral, but the access to visceral was the intellectual, spiritual approach."

Considering that GRACE had gone from several incarnations from short film to multiple draft after draft of the script, did the prolonged start time benefit this version of GRACE that went before cameras? "Oh, without a doubt!" Solet confesses. "Just the fact that it was able to percolate in my brain and it gave me time to work with the DP Zoran Popovic (THE LOST) very closely beforehand. We really cut it on paper, we were certainly aware on the day when you have 50 set-ups to do that you're not going to be shooting storyboards necessarily. But yes, absolutely. I got to just marinate in every single element of this thing in a way that I don't think a lot of filmmakers get to. It meant some personal struggles but that's the name of the game."

Speaking of the shoot itself, it couldn't have gone any smoother for a first time director, especially with the help of his overly supportive producers. "Having Adam Green and Cory Neal and Will Barratt from Ariescope is literally like having 3 guardian angels. They're such good guys that you just know that you're in good hands. Not only are they awesome dudes, but they're so fucking savy. They're disarmingly friendly, but they really do know how to do this, and they're straight shooters. You just know you're in good hands with them."

It also seems that the entire crew was always on the same page with Solet right from the beginning, which only helped the overall work on the picture. Solet continues, "Our supervising producer up there Rhonda Baker, she's certainly one of the best producers I've worked with and that I've ever seen work! She did TIDELAND for Terry Gilliam, she'd done basically every big film up there and she's fiercely loyal and really good at her job. From her down, we got really amazing people. Our camera team was unbelievable. We had a fantastic operator. Crew up there was really good. By the time we got there, I had a very tight relationship with everyone. What I learned was really a confirmation that there are different management styles, and if you're directing, it's like managing. And my style of directing... it reaffirmed my faith that if you treat people well, and you hire the right people and respect them, and trust them to give you their all and embrace the fact that this is an organic collaborative process, then magic happens. That's why I love making films. Magic fucking happens! You can't just sit in your room and do this shit. If you add an amazing production designer into the mix, or add an amazing DP in the mix, even a camera operator or a dolly grip. I've had situations where our dolly grip would be like, "Ya know, if I boom down first..." And I'm like "Fucking right, dude." We allowed this shoot to be organic."

Considering that this is primarily a character driven horror movie, we asked Solet about his experience working with this group of actors. "We assembled an amazing cast of generous, mature, strong actors. They were all such good listeners that just watching them work was a delight. Literally, watching Gabrielle Rose for example, there were literally times when I forgot to call cut. You just have the whole room hanging around the monitor and everybody forgets that you're making a movie. You're talking about what should've been a 6 second take? In 6 seconds, a whole room of professionals loses themselves to the point that they can't turn off the camera. This woman is fucking amazing! Amazing. She blew me the fuck away. Wait until you see this performance. Un-fucking- believable."

And what about baby Grace herself? You'd think that working with a baby actor would prove difficult on the shoot, but Solet seemed to have no real problems with his pint-sized performer. "Working with a real baby, which on a time schedule might be a problem is fine... if you can wait! We were literally 25 camera set ups before lunch on some days. So, from the start, I really did some ethical, moral thinking about how I was going to approach this. Am I really going to be manipulating this baby? How much of that is OK? Is this really how the universe wants this film directed? You know what I mean? I decided to point the camera at the baby, and allow the baby to dictate the drama, and allow that to be your starting point, and it was right, it was perfect. If you create the right situation, I think the baby cued off of it. And if the baby needed to cry, the baby ended up crying. And if the baby needed to have an intimate moment with the mom? We created a situation where Jordan was cradling the baby, being kind to the baby. It was amazing. And this baby was just a fine actor! She was fucking awesome! And the parents were amazing. The mother was a very grounded, present, down-to-earth, reasonable person. She understood that if the baby cries, we need footage of the baby crying. It's really hard to shoot a baby crying! Unless you're a sociopath, you're hardwired to respond to a baby's crying by doing whatever you can to stop the baby from crying! And so, I literally would find myself gritting my teeth during takes, remembering that my allegiance is always to the story. And that, it's just like, weighing every single case. Every single case required a real moral consideration, a constant vigilance of "Ok, have I crossed the line?" And if I felt I crossed the line, I called cut and mom came in and comforted the baby."

EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL... Coming To Theaters?! And In 3D?! GROOVY!

Wow! When I caught the NY performances of EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL at the beginning of last year, I considered it to be among the best 2 hours of my life! The hysterical production managed to combine all the great elements of THE EVIL DEAD and EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN (with a pinch of ARMY OF DARKNESS thrown in for good measure), while simultaneously providing for memorable musical numbers and dousing the front rows with tons of fake blood! According to Screen Daily, the producers of the musical are looking to bring it to the big screen... in 3D!

The article says, "Producer Don Carmody and partners are in negotiations with Spider-man director Sam Raimi to bring to the screen the musical version of the former horror meister's Evil Dead films, Evil Dead: The Musical.

Conceived by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, the camp stage interpretation of Raimi’s cult classic horror trilogy was originally mounted in Toronto and Montreal and has since gone off-Broadway.

Original directors Bond and choreographer Hinton Battle are lined up to co-direct the film version, which will be presented in 3-D. Carmody told Screen International he hopes to shoot the film in the spring of next year in Toronto with some of the original cast."

Let's hope that means Ryan Ward as ASH!!!

Also of note in the article, "Meanwhile, Carmody begins principal photography September 29 on All Saints Day, the sequel to The Boondock Saints." (Hell, I'm a HUGE BOONDOCK SAINTS fan too!)

Here's the type of hilarity you can expect from EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL. ("What The F*** Was That?")

William Lustig Bringing Back MANIAC COP!

"It must be visiting hours, 'cause my friend is back!"

FANGORIA is reporting that at the recent Anthology Film Archives screening of the first two MANIAC COP films, director William Lustig revealed his intentions to make a new MANIAC COP movie! Lustig directed all 3 MANIAC COP films as a collaboration with screenwriter Larry Cohen (IT'S ALIVE) and both are very much involved in the series resurrection. "Larry and I have gotten the sequel rights back for MANIAC COP, and we’re preparing to do a MANIAC COP 4. I don’t have any more details other than that; this all happened within the last month, so it’s so fresh… When I get back to Los Angeles, Larry and I are going to sit down and work on something."

I love the first 2 MANIAC COP films. (3rd one's OK, but Lustig often admits to producer's interference) So, count us excited for the return of the MANIAC COP! (Question is... will Robert Z'Dar return too?) More when we hear it!

DIARY OF THE DEAD 2 Starts Shooting This September!

As previously reported by DREAD CENTRAL HERE, George A. Romero starts shooting DIARY OF THE DEAD 2 on September 15th in Toronto, Canada. No other details at the moment, other then that the sequel is officially happening. The first DIARY OF THE DEAD is probably the only of George A. Romero's films that I don't like, but I'm optimistic for his sequel, especially if he abandons the "Cinéma vérité" style and goes for more traditional storytelling this time around. Will it pick up exactly where the last one left off with Michelle Morgan, Shawn Roberts and the professor in the panic room? We'll know post-September!

TOM HOLLAND Behind New Horror Web-Series “5 OR DIE” On Strike TV!

At the beginning of August, several of the major horror web publications all received a mysterious video spot hinting at something called “5 OR DIE”. It turns out that “5 OR DIE” is actually the new short film from writer/director Tom Holland, which debuts exclusively on-line at the STRIKE TV website this September. STRIKE.TV is the new internet platform for Hollywood talent that was created during the Writer’s Guild Strike. Holland says the purpose is to give professionals a creative outlet other than the studios and networks.

Holland is no stranger to the horror genre, having penned the screenplays for PSYCHO 2, THE BEAST WITHIN and later writing and directing horror classics FRIGHT NIGHT, CHILD’S PLAY and the Stephen King adaptations for THINNER and THE LANGOLIERS. “5 OR DIE” marks Holland’s grand return to the genre and introduces genre fans to a brand new killer unlike anyone you’ve ever seen cinematically thus far.

The short (shot in Studio City earlier this year) is about three high school friends who get caught in the middle of deadly chain email that instructs them to forward the letter in 5 minutes or die. As two of the friends watch the third get slashed and brutally murdered by a mysterious man in black, they desperately search for a way to protect themselves as they watch their time quickly run out.

Holland says one of the great things about the net is that there are no rules, and he intends to walk the edge in both horror and violence, hopefully falling over into the abyss of bad taste from time to time. There will be a message board on Strike.TV’s “5 OR DIE” page where fans can communicate with him and let him know if he has succeeded or not.

He hopes regardless, the show will be great fun for the fans and newcomers to the horror genre.

While STRIKE TV preps to premiere the short exclusively on their website in September, the My Space page is officially live now at: www.myspace.com/5ordie. Fans are encouraged to log in to their My Space page and add the profile to your friends list. You will have access to exclusive production stills, screen grabs and teaser trailers for “5 OR DIE”, and anyone that adds the profile will receive a code on August 18th to watch the short a full month before everyone else!

5 OR DIE was written & directed by Tom Holland and produced by Dennis DeFrehn, special effects by Vince Guastini and stars Brandon Fobbs (The Wire), Madeline Zima (Californication), James Snyder (Crybaby on Broadway) and Kevin Daniels (Their Eye were Watching God).

An Icons of Fright Exclusive! The first review of the long-awaited "Return to Sleepaway Camp"!

Return to Sleepaway Camp

Return to Sleepaway Camp

It's been 5 years since principal photography completed on “Return To Sleepaway Camp” and this reviewer has to wonder why it's taken so long to get the movie out. Especially when you consider that this is a sequel that finally lives up to the rude and nasty spirit of the original “Sleepaway Camp”. Forget the mid-80's sequels, “Return To Sleepaway Camp” is THE movie us fans have been waiting for.

The sequels that hit video store shelves in '88 and '89, featuring Pamela Springsteen as Angela, were adequately goofy/gory spoofs of the cheapo slasher subgenre. They featured enough splatter and contrived continuity from the original to tide over fans for almost two decades. Still, “Sleepaway Camp” writer-director Robert Hiltzik had nothing to do with them. While they hold up as campy (no pun intended) fun they lack the seedy, sleazy, and mean-spirited tone of Hiltzik's original classic. It has always lacked a proper follow-up.

Return to Sleepaway Camp

“Return to Sleepaway Camp” picks up 20+ years later. At Camp Manabe, co-owed by Frank (Vincent Pastore of “The Sopranos”) and Ronnie (Paul DeAngelo, reprising his role as the former Camp Arawak counselor) kids are being relentlessly cruel to one of the campers. This time it's the overweight and socially awkward Alan. The counselors, and his peers, relentlessly berate him about his weight, and his slovenly appearance. He appears to never bathe or change clothes. The maladroit manner with which he interacts with the opposite sex wins him no girlfriends either. Still, unlike the shy and unassuming Angela, Alan is kind of a jerk too, bullying the younger campers as much as he gets it himself.

Return to Sleepaway Camp

Soon a series of increasingly grisly “accidents” start to happen around the camp. Ronnie immediately becomes paranoid, convinced that somehow Angela has found him. They seek out her brother Ricky (Jonathan Tiereston, also reprising his role) who assures them that Angela is locked away in mental facility. Ricky, Ronnie, Frank, the camp chef Charlie (played by the late Isaac Hayes), and a local sheriff with the worst facial hair since famous 'stash on the cop' in the original, try to figure out what's going on, and put a stop to the killings. Still, the cruel jokes continue, the body count rises, and everyone not already dead at Camp Manabe becomes a suspect. Maybe Angela is back in town?

Return to Sleepaway Camp

“Return To Sleepaway Camp” has it's share of gruesome and violent death scenes, including one great homage to the original featuring an industrial strength deep-fryer instead of a pot of boiling water. However, most of the gore is left to the imagination, and we're usually treated to just the nasty after-effects of the murders. One of the reasons “Return To Sleepaway Camp” was rumored to have been held up was the need to complete some CGI special effects. We're not sure where these supposed CGI effects are. Most of the death scenes are done practically, with makeup effects. There's a cheap looking CGI title sequence, and one death involving fire that may have required CG, but that's it.

Like the original, but unusual for the genre, the kids in the movie are the played by actors of the appropriate age. There are no 30 year old women playing teenager girls in this movie. It's weird to watch Disney Channel-esque actors in a slasher film. With all the violence and foul language it's like watching a bunch of 14 year olds reenact a John Waters movie. It's just not something you ever got comfortable with in the original and the effect holds up here. The young cast, and their sometimes stilted and clumsy performances, give the film that loud, hysterical, crass feel of the first and lend to it a strangely trashy edge. You know what? I'll take trashy over safe and politically correct in my slasher sequels anytime.

There are a few problems with “Return” that hopefully the filmmakers have some time to fix. The pre-release cut Icons of Fright saw features a lackluster score and often amateurish editing. Be honest with yourself though: The original “Sleepaway Camp” is a fun 80's slasher movie (which this one really captures the spirit of) but it's not an amazing example of fine or remarkable filmmaking. Still, the original score made it much more cinematic and theatrical than this one comes across. Without that vintage-style score this sequel feels cheap. The pedestrian editing, featuring long fade-ins and outs between scenes, hurts the pace of the movie. Both these elements leave the film feeling somewhat unfinished, and after 5 years that's unacceptable. Also, considering the pedigree of this film the ending is somewhat anti-climactic.

Still, it's hard not to recommend the film, especially to any fan that's been waiting for a true follow-up. It's got everything you're going to want from a “Sleepaway Camp” sequel: A bunch of obnoxious, nasty, rude camp-goers getting burned, skinned, crushed, and eaten alive in a movie that's only a few half-shirts and denim shorts from looking like it's 1983 all over again.

Return to Sleepaway Camp

BEYOND THE GRAVE Trailer, Images!

Lockheart Filmes Ltda. presents the first full trailer of the independent Brazilian horror-fantasy BEYOND THE GRAVE (aka PORTO DOS MORTOS). The preview of the feature film can be viewed at the official website www.beyondthegravemovie.com. Written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro (who's also producing with Isidoro B. Guggiana), BEYOND THE GRAVE follows the unstoppable hunt of the vengeful cop Lockheart (Rafael Tombini) for Adam, a supernatural serial killer. The film is currently in post-production and looking for international distribution.

The storyline of BEYOND THE GRAVE follows a dark journey through the wastelands of a dystopic Brazil. In this forsaken landscape, Lockheart will join forces with a group of survivors and face his demonic nemesis and the rage of the “returners” who inhabited the world. “This is not a zombie or serial killer film, but a reaction to the recent production as well as to my own preconceptions of what the movie should be. It’s a violent and emotional experience, mixing possession, black magic, the living dead and intense doses of suspense, character work and spanking action”, believes Davi.

BEYOND THE GRAVE was shot in 22 days between the months of February and April in the city of Porto Alegre and surroundings. Locations were specifically chosen and/or adapted for the pessimistic and particular look of the world created by the first time feature director. A crew of forty people was assembled to bring his dream project to life. “BEYOND THE GRAVE is full of strong characters and cool set pieces that I have thought for a long time. It’s a real dream to be able to bring such intense images to the screen”, says Davi.

Lloyd Kaufman Talks TOXIC AVENGER 5!?!

FANGORIA recently had a chat with TROMA president Lloyd Kaufman and the filmmaker revealed plans to do yet another sequel to everyone's favorite superhero from New Jersey, THE TOXIC AVENGERKaufman told FANGO all about THE TOXIC AVENGER 5:

"Unlike Superman, who never seems to age, Toxie gets older with each movie. In THE TOXIC AVENGER PARTs II-IV, he has gotten married and had children. Now he’ll have to deal with his wife’s menopause, his erectile dysfunction—which is a constant erection—and his rebellious kid. We’re on to the next generation, like STAR TREK. We’ll see a little of Toxie’s twins in kindergarten, and then as teenagers. The son is rebellious, while the daughter is ultra-politically correct. We’ll show her going through puberty, which should be the most colorful monthly cycle ever put on film! We want to focus on the father/child relationship, and the generation gap. There is also a villain who wants to rename Tromaville Scheisseville, and FANGORIA and other independent media will be prominently featured!”

Does DIARY OF THE DEAD 2 Start Shooting This September?!

Our fiends over at Dread Central are reporting that George A. Romero recently had to bail out of an appearance this upcoming weekend at the Motor City Nightmares show in Novi, Michigan. Reason given was "work related issues". Dread did a little snooping though and found out that, "George has to attend several meetings about Diary 2 which have the project significantly hitting the fast track. So significantly that we got the word it's 99.9% a go for the film to start production this September." While I personally wasn't a fan of DIARY OF THE DEAD, I love Romero and his body of work. I'd love to see him do something completely different for DIARY OF THE DEAD 2. More when we hear it!

One day, Av and Red are enjoying a placid outing at their favorite fishing spot when three boys and a shotgun come along. In an instant, Av’s lifelong friend is gone, the victim of a cruel, senseless act. Devastated, Av determines to find out who the boys are and why they did it. Helped by a local reporter (Dickens), Av tries to expose the truth, but his efforts are ignored by authorities and mocked by the teenagers. The boys’ parents, a rich local businessman (Sizemore) and, across town, a hardscrabble laborer (Englund) and his wife (Plummer), are just as determined to keep Av down. But, faithful to the memory of his best friend, Av single-mindedly presses for justice-with or without the law on his side.

Smokin' Hot Cast Set For NIGHT OF THE DEMONS!

Wow. Shock Till You Drop got the exclusive scoop of the 3 recently cast leads for the NIGHT OF THE DEMONS remake, being helmed by Adam Gierasch (AUTOPSY) with the approval of the original's director Kevin Tenney. Shannon Elizabeth (AMERICAN PIE, THIR13EN GHOSTS, CURSED, SCARY MOVIE, JACK FROST), Monica Keena (FREDDY VS JASON) and Diora Baird (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING) will top line the new NIGHT OF THE DEMONS! (Schwing!)

The Shock article states, "Elizabeth is set to play Angela - previously essayed by actress Amelia Kinkade in the original - a possessed party hostess who makes things a living hell for her friends."

Shooting begins in September in New Orleans from a script by by Gierasch and writing partner Jace Anderson (the duo penned Dario Argento's MOTHER OF TEARS).

Bloody-Disgusting just got in some quotes from the director himself. He tells B-D, " "They're a gorgeous cast, aren't they? We're lucky! But I'm also excited to work with Monica, Shannon and Diora because they've got serious acting chops and have great ideas about their characters. I come from an acting background originally, and working with the actors is one of my favorite parts of directing."

He continues, "My aim is to have the movie be an absolute blast: a balls-to-the-wall demon gorefest that remembers that horror movies should be fun. Our demon setpieces riff on some classic moments from the original as well as introduce new craziness. Each demon will have its own distinct look and personality. I'll be using classic '80s punk songs in the score. I'm making the movie that would have been my absolute favorite when I was seventeen. It'll have punk rock, demons, gore and gorgeous women: all the things that make life worth living!" Amen to that!

Production Wraps On James Felix McKenney's SATAN HATES YOU!

Glass Eye Pix and MonsterPants Movies are proud to announce that principal photography was completed in New York City on Tuesday for SATAN HATES YOU, written and directed by James Felix McKenney.

The film's cast is led by Don Wood (TV's COLONIAL HOUSE, IN A FIX) and Christine Spencer (AUTOMATONS) and also includes Angus Scrimm (PHANTASM, TV's ALIAS), Reggie Bannister (PHANTASM, BUBBA HO-TEP), Michael Berryman (ONE FLEW OVER THE CUKOO'S NEST, THE HILLS HAVE EYES), Debbie Rochon (TROMEO AND JULIET, TERROR FIRMER) and Producer Larry Fessenden (HABIT, THE BRAVE ONE) with appearances by Pauley Perrette (TV's NCIS, ALMOST FAMOUS) and author Max Brooks (WORLD WAR Z, THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE).

The film is inspired by Christian "scare" cinema of the 1950's - 70's and tells the story of two troubled individuals (Wood and Spencer) who find themselves on the fast track to losing their immortal souls.

"This film is significantly larger than anything we've done before. With a huge cast and multiple locations around New York, Los Angeles and even Hell itself, I went into this shoot fearing I bit off more than I could chew. But our incredible cast and amazing crew made getting this ambitions project in the can a breeze." says McKenney. "It was almost too easy."

SATAN HATES YOU is McKenney's fourth feature film, following the critically acclaimed AUTOMATONS. The film is produced by Larry Fessenden's company Glass Eye Pix, along with director McKenney's MonsterPants movies, Lisa Wisely and Jeremiah Kipp. Eric Branco is the Director of Photography.

Says Fessenden, "It is always very special to team up with the Monsterpants gang. They make films the way I like it: seat of the pants resourceful, lotta heart, lotta love on set. That's what Glass Eye has always been about and collaborating with McKenney keeps us honest. As for Satan Hates You, I think the title says it all."

Look for SATAN HATES YOU in early 2009.

Doug Bradley (whom most genre fans recognize as Pinhead from the HELLRAISER franchise) unveiled the first episode of his new production companie's horror shorts series SPINECHILLERS at this past weekend's HORRORHOUND convention in Pittsburgh, PA. The first 17 minute episode titled THE OUTSIDER is based on the H.P. Lovecraft short story. A preview can be viewed on-line at THIS link! Bloody-Disgusting is reporting exclusively that the 2nd episode planned will be Edgar Allen Poe's THE TELL-TALE HEART, while the third episode on queue is W.W. Jacobs' THE MONKEY'S PAW.

Bradley explained the origins behind both his new production company Renegade Arts Entertainment Ltd, as well as the SPINECHILLERS series on his official website DougBradley.com. Here's his statement:

"It's time to announce The Outsider.

To begin at the beginning: Since the turn of the year, I am a director of a new production company based in Brighton, called Renegade Arts Entertainment Ltd. Renegade will to a large extent carry forward the work of Renga Media, and Tony Luke is also a director. Joining us is producer and director Alexander Finbow. Dominator X, which fell foul of the 'English Disease' (financing and production nightmares which are still unravelling) last year, is now to be taken forward by Renegade.

In the meantime, we are proceeding on a number of fronts, and we have produced what is planned to be the first in ongoing series which we're calling 'Doug Bradley's Spine Chillers' and the first of these is now available. It's H P Lovecraft's short story The Outsider. At the moment we're making it available as a download. You can check out a free preview or pay for the whole thing:

It started life as a half-baked idea from me which popped into my head while recording Mr B Gone and was essentially no more than the feeling that the 'talking book' hadn't moved forward since the days of the cassette tape and that it really should be possible to offer more in the digital age. And it sprang from that to a finished product in pretty short order. Through the good offices of Digital Deli it was recently screened at BAFTA and I was delighted by the response.

We will soon be making it available in hard copy and will present it in multiple platforms, the idea being you could play it as a DVD, mount it on your PC/iPod/phone in audio-visual form or listen to it as a good old audio book in the car on your way to work.

When Renegade's present project is finished - the video to accompany a track from Judas Priest's new album 'Nostradamus', we will commence work on the second Spine Chiller which is slated to be Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Tell Tale Heart'. If the series takes off, I hope to expand it to use other actors and contemporary and unsigned authors."

This past weekend, Ruggero Deodato (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST), Lamberto Bava (DEMONS 1-2) and Sergio Stivaletti took part in the first ever "Masters Of Italian Horror" panel at the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors in Secaucus, NJ. During the discussion, Deodato was asked about the status of his proposed CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST sequel simply titled CANNIBALS (or as Deodato referred to it "CANNIBAL METROPOLITAN"). (See original post HERE!) He told the Fango audience that the script was complete and that shooting was scheduled to begin in September of this year. However, he confessed to us that the producer wanted him to change one thing from the script, and Deodato doesn't want to compromise. So, shooting won't begin until he can resolve this one discrepancy with the producer of CANNIBALS. He joked, "Hopefully... I win!"

Meanwhile, an audience member asked Lamberto Bava if anyone's asked him about remaking DEMONS yet. Bava replied that he's "sick of remake-mania" and that while no one has brought up a remake to DEMONS, if they ever did, he would NOT want to be a part of it.

Back in early 2007, there were several reports about a proposed "MASTERS OF ITALIAN HORROR" series. Not a television series however, but instead a series of 4 films, each helmed by a different Italian horror director. Umberto Lenzi, Lamberto Bava, Sergio Martino and Nicola Rondolino were all attached but then, no word since that original announcement.

This past weekend, Ruggero Deodato (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST), Lamberto Bava (DEMONS 1-2) and Sergio Stivaletti took part in the first ever "Masters Of Italian Horror" panel at the Fangoria Weekend Of Horror's in Secaucus, NJ. During the panel discussion, the status of the 4-movie series came up, and Bava said that he still intends on producing the films.

However, helming each of the 4 movies will now be Ruggero Deodato, Lamberto Bava, Sergio Stivaletti and the Manetti Brothers (Antonio & Marco). Bava told the audience that he hopes they can bring back the sensabilities of the "80's Italian horror cinema" but modernize it. September 2008 is the proposed shooting date for the first feature, with the intent to finish it by years end. More when we hear it!

Icons Of Fright caught up with writer/director John Russo at this past weekend's FANGORIA convention and asked him for the latest on the film version of ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD, which he talked about with us in last month's FRIGHT exclusive interview. "Well, you already know, we have Tony Todd, Gunnar Hansen, Amber Stevens from the show GREEK on the ABC Family Channel and Kristina Klebe cast. It looks like we have Kristina’s uncle Pierre Brice, who is one of the most famous actors in Germany & he’s going to play the part of Smokey."

"The project was at the Cannes Film Festival where we had a couple of million dollars in pre-sales from various countries, so now those deals have to be closed and our executive producer Dave Mendez and our co-producer Joe Majestic and Sam Sherman are working on US distribution and talking to several companies about that. But with the pre-sales, they feel we will get it sown up and probably be shooting by September and October of this year." Russo adds, "We really want to shoot in Pittsburgh."

To those unfamiliar with the ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD, Russo wrote a screenplay for the project which he eventually adapted into a 5 issue mini series for Avatar Press. The book was so successful that it spawned 10 sequels in the comics. Considering the overwhelmingly positive response from the fans, it seemed only natural to go back to the original script and make it into the movie as Russo originally intended. When asked if any changes have been made from the original story, Russo explains, "The comic book was set in 1971 and this movie is going to be contemporary. It will be the same basic story, which is a really good story. Lots of twists and turns and great characters."

With the principal characters cast, Russo seems very excited at the prospect of working with these actors. "Well, Tony Todd was in our 1990 NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. I got along great with Tony during the making of that movie, so did Russ. So, it was a natural. I suggested Tony right away for the father. And then I met Kristina in Dallas and we got along well as friends. We seemed to be on the same wave length creatively and I think she’s a very charming person and a great addition to the movie. Amber I don’t know, but I’ve seen her in GREEK and she’s beautiful. And Gunnar, wait’ll you see what we turn him into!"

Lastly, Russo went on record to say that he's become a huge fan of Icons Of Fright! "I want to say one thing. I was not familiar with the Icons Of Fright site until Beth did the interview and you guys do such a fantastic job with that site, it’s absolutely beautiful. When Russ and I saw the interview and how you laid it out, let me shake your hand. It was very well done, the whole thing. Russ saw it and said to everyone in our movie making program that they have to see this interview, because it’s terrific."

Check out the interview he's talking about by clicking the frame below!

BLOOD NIGHT Update! Will MARY HATCHET Return For A Sequel?

Several months ago, we posted a teaser trailer for an upcoming horror movie titled BLOOD NIGHT: THE LEGEND OF MARY HATCHET, which stars genre vets Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN) and Bill Moseley (THE DEVIL'S REJECTS). (See trailer HERE!) We caught up with director Frank Sabatella at this past weekend's FANGORIA convention in Secaucus, NJ to get a status update on the project. "We just finished the 2nd rough cut and we just sent it over to audio," Sabatella tells ICONS, "so we're currently doing a little bit of sound design and cleaning up all the dialogue, then we’re going into a pretty solid polishing phase while the film is scored."

When asked how the editing process has been going, Sabatella couldn't be happier. "It’s definitely on track. It has the feel I wanted, which is being a classic slasher movie but modernized. To me, I think it portrays that exactly. The story is there, the gore is there and it’s looking really good."

Speaking of gore, BLOOD NIGHT's FX artist Jeremy B. Selenfriend is also at the table, and with plenty of left over goodies from the film's murder sequences! (See photos below) "The movie's got 26 on-screen kills," gushes Selenfriend. "I’ve known Frank for a lot of years now and a lot of it, Frank gave me the starting point and asked ‘What are your ideas? What can you do to make this more then just another death scene?’ So, some of them we got to go really, really elaborate and neat, and some of them he wrote that way to begin with. I don’t often get to put in my ideas, so this was nice. Frank and I know each other well enough that he trusted me to come up with some cool things."

As far as an official release, Sabatella tells us, "We have a pretty healthy list of distributors asking us for a final cut, so right now we’re focusing on making the (final) cut as amazing as we can. We also definitely plan on getting it out to festivals. I want to see how the audience reacts. That’s the point, right? We want to see the audience’s reactions, so the quickest & best way to do that is find a good festival, get it in there and screen it – I can’t wait to watch this with an audience and see how they react. Hopefully they like it!"

So, with the introduction of the iconic "Mary Hatchet" character, did the director set up BLOOD NIGHT to have a potential sequel? "Well, it’s a funny question because when I wrote the script, I said I will absolutely not do a sequel. I wanted it to have a definitive end. But as I’m putting it together, more and more people are asking about it. I’ve thought about it and I think if the interest was there and somebody wanted to do a sequel, I would, but I’d take the story elements in a very different direction. The character of Mary Hatchet herself is so cool that there’s so much that can be done with it. Now after having seen this movie, through the editing, although I’m very happy with it, you sometimes think ‘Man I wish I did this!’ or ‘I could’ve done this.’ So, potentially there could be another BLOOD NIGHT. There definitely could be."

ERIC RED Talks Next Vampire Flick NIGHTLIFE!

Filmmaker Eric Red (screenwriter on THE HITCHER, NEAR DARK, BLUE STEEL and director on BAD MOON & BODY PARTS) took part in a panel this weekend for FANGORIA'S Secaucus, NJ convention where he previewed his latest effort 100 FEET. On stage, he re-confirmed what he told us earlier this month in our FRIGHT exclusive interview that he's returning to the vampire genre with his upcoming project NIGHTLIFE. The last time Red tackled the subject of "vampires in the real world" we got the fantastic NEAR DARK directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

He told the Fango audience that the script for NIGHTLIFE is complete and they're in the very early stages pre-production. As to the films plot, he told us in our interview that, "It’s a contemporary vampire story set in San Francisco. (Where Red plans on shooting the film.) It’s very graphic in terms of violence and sexuality. It’s about a girl who comes to San Francisco looking for her missing sister. She received a letter from her and she’s come to find her and she meets this guy who’s very handsome and charismatic and successful who was friends with her sister, and he wants to help her find her. This guy, of course is a vampire and her sister got away from him. But he turned the sister into a vampire, and she’s now trying to find a way (since he never told her how to kill vampires), to learn how to kill vampires so she can kill him. So you have one sister going together with this guy to try to find her missing sister. And then the other sister learning how to kill vampires so she can get this guy and they’re all headed on a collision course."

He screened 2 scenes at the panel from 100 FEET and told audiences that they are very close to finalizing a distribution deal and he hopes the film will go theatrical later this year.

Is Ali Lohan Going To Nilbog? TROLL Remake Update!

It was announced late last year that FX guru John Carl Buechler was planning a big-budget remake of one of his own directorial efforts, TROLL. While most of the time, I sigh at the announcement of another remake, this one sounds OK. Buechler himself is involved and the film (with an estimated budget of $25 million) is going to be independently financed. So, if the director wants to redo one of his own films 20 year later and improve upon it, I'm all for it!

Today, word came in via E! News that Lidsay Lohan's little sister Ali Lohan auditioned Eunice St. Clair, who helps Harry Potter Jr. (Yep, TROLL has that character first) fight the evil Torok the Troll. According to the article Buechler told E! "She was great. The camera loves her. She's a really good actress...I am personally going to fight for her." Also attached is Noah Hathaway. More when we hear it!

Adrienne King Jumps Back In Front Of The Camera For WALKING DISTANCE!

FANGORIA recently chatted with writer/director Mel House (CLOSET SPACE), who's currently shooting his latest film WALKING DISTANCE with Denton Blane Everett, Glenn Morshower, Kathy Lamkin, Debbie Rochon, PHANTASM’s Reggie Bannister, Katie Featherston, Fango “Spooksmodel” Shannon Lark, among others. Today, the site reveals that Adrienne King has joined the cast in the role of Louise Strack. Although King has had a long career in voice-over work, WALKING DISTANCE marks her first appearance in front of the camera since FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2! Check out the teaser poster below! To learn more details, click HERE to read FANGO's original article with quotes from House and executive producer James LaMarr.

June 12, 2008

FANGORIA recently caught up with director Anthony Hickox and talked about the upcoming DVD release of his somewhat "lost" video cult classic SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE IN RETREAT (which starred Bruce Campbell, David Carradine and Deborah Foreman). Lionsgate is releasing the DVD on September 23rd (according to DREAD CENTRAL), but Michael Felsher and his Red Shirt Pictures is providing the supplementary material. Among the disc's goodies will be a first-time-ever widescreen transfer of the film, a commentary by Hickox and cinematographer Levie Issacks, and interviews with stars Bruce Campbell and David Carradine.

When asked about a potential remake to my personal fave Hickox movie WAXWORK, he tells FANGORIA it's possible. "The guy who owns the rights to it is dying to remake it, but he doesn’t get along with one of the other producers from the original. However, I’m sure they will work something out. If they do that, it still needs to be campy—and the mummy would have to move a lot faster than it did in mine! If they do get it going, my only request is to do a cameo appearance."

Here's an idea I've had for years... (so if and when someone steals it, remember where you heard it first.) Why hasn't New Line tapped the remake rights for WAXWORK? Wouldn't it be neat to see a sequel/redux of the original WAXWORK with Freddy, Jason & Leatherface? Essentially characters that New Line has the rights to use? Just my two cents if anyone out there's readin' this! (And and bring back David Warner in the same role! ;-D)

Stephen King's DOLAN'S CADILLAC Filming in Canada!

DOLAN'S CADILLAC FILMING IN CANADA - Christian Slater, Emmanuelle Vaugier and Wes Bentley bring Stephen King short story to the big screen.

May 29, 2008 (Regina, SK) DOLAN'S CADILLAC, a feature film adaptation of Stephen King's acclaimed short story, began shooting in Regina, Canada and Moose Jaw, Canada on Monday, May 26.

The film stars Christian Slater (Bobby, Windtalkers), Emmanuelle Vaugier (CSI: NY, Two and a Half Men) and Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Ghost Rider).

Based on one of Stephen King's most suspenseful short stories, Dolan's Cadillac is a psychological thriller in the vein of The Dead Zone and The Secret Window.

Tom Robinson (Wes Bentley) is a peaceful, law-abiding schoolteacher until his wife Elizabeth (Emmanuelle Vaugier) accidentally witnesses a murder. Jimmy Dolan (Christian Slater), Las Vegas' most ruthless and untouchable mob boss, never leaves behind a witness.

Haunted by the ghost of his wife, Robinson transforms himself into an obsessed vengeance machine, pushing himself beyond the breaking point of mind, body and spirit. When the two men finally meet deep in the heart of the desert, Dolan¹s Cadillac climaxes with an amazing test of wills the ultimate duel. The Cadillac, which has been Dolan¹s armor, may just as easily become his tomb.

Rhonda Baker (The Messengers, Terry Gilliam¹s Tideland) and Alain Gagnon (Snake Eyes, The Sum of All Fears) will produce.

Kevin DeWalt (Walled In, Hybrid) of Minds Eye Entertainment and Ellen Wander (Big Spender, Say Nothing) of Film Bridge International will executive produce the $9 million film.

The action-based thriller started shooting in and around Regina, SK (Canada) and Moose Jaw, SK (Canada) on May 26, 2008 and will wrap production in June after 26 shooting days.

In a departure from his recent efforts in television, Canadian Jeff Beesley (Little Mosque on the Prairie, Corner Gas) will return to feature films to direct this edgy thriller, based on Richard Dooling's (Kingdom Hospital) script adapted from Stephen King's short story, Dolan's Cadillac an ominous story that will keep audiences in suspense in its transfer from the page to the screen.

"The audience is in for a treat," says executive producer Kevin DeWalt. "We've assembled an incredibly talented cast and a highly skilled crew and are ready to deliver a quality film that will exceed audience expectations." Film Bridge International acquired the rights for international sale. "The transition from page to screen will not disappoint," promises executive producer Ellen Wander. "This story is one of vengeance, Stephen King style."

Lovecraft adaptation is in his future! He tells Shock that casting has begun for THE THING ON THE DOORSTEP, which Gordon's making for production company Amicus Entertainment. Longtime collaborator Dennis Paoli (who also co-scripted RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND with Gordon) also co-wrote the script.

Gordon tells Shock, "In our version it's about a psychiatrist who gets this patient, a young girl who comes in, who he thinks has multiple personality disorder. And he knows that in all cases of multiple personality involves sexual abuse. So, he's very intrigued by this girl, but he's also very drawn to her. One of her personalities keeps trying to seduce him. Eventually he gives in and he's having sex with her and he says to her, 'Is this good for you?' And she says, 'Why don't you see for yourself?' Suddenly they switch bodies and he's now in her body and she's in his. This lasts for a few seconds and it's like, what the hell happened? It turns out this girl is actually a sorceress and wants to take over his body and she is eventually going to become him."

THE GATE: 20 YEARS LATER Still In The Works!

Way back in December of 2007, we ran a report about a new version of THE GATE, supposedly to be shot in 3D!? After several months of silence on the project, word has come out of Cannes that Randall William Cook is in fact directing THE GATE: 20 YEARS LATER from H20 Motion Picture. It's supposedly a sequel to the original, rather then a remake, although no mention if the plan is still to release the movie in 3D. Cook, an FX artist for WETA has a long history with genre pics, having worked Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and KING KONG, as well as the original THE GATE and THE GATE 2. I'm a HUGE fan of the original, as well as it's so-bad-it's-good sequel. Fingers crossed that this is a worthy follow-up!

First Word On Romero's DIARY OF THE DEAD 2!

George Romero recently took part in an interview with Dread Central's Uncle Creepy to promote the release of DIARY OF THE DEAD on DVD May 20th. Uncle George dropped several interesting tid-bits about the proposed DIARY OF THE DEAD sequel! Romero confessed that the screenplay for it is already done! "I’ve written the first draft of the script, [producer Peter [Grunwald]’s coming up here next week and we’re going to sand it down and refine it, so we’ll be ready. Then it’s just a matter of someone saying 'yeah, do it'." What can we expect from DIARY OF THE DEAD 2? "Actually a thing that I love, and it might be more fan pleasing, but it’s not subjective camera. I’m using a couple of the big characters but not the ones you would expect. I’m starting with the girl that took off…" Man, I really have to give DIARY another chance once it hits DVD on May 20th.

Gudino Helming New CUT THROATS NINE!

Those fiends over at Dread Central pointed us out to this cool bit of news! Former Rue Morgue editor Rodrigo Gudino has announced his first feature length debut via the pages of Rue Morgue #78. Gudino will follow up his 2 successful short films DEMONOLOGY OF DESIRE and THE EYES OF EDWARD JAMES with a remake of Joaquin Romero Marchent’s 1972 uber violent Eurowestern CUT THROATS NINE! If you'll recall, our staffer Kevin Klemm picked the original CUT THROATS NINE for issue 5 of his GRINDHOUSE AFICIONADO column! According to Dread's post, "The film tells the story of seven prisoners being transported from their detail at a gold mine to a fort where they will finish off their life sentences. Their wagon train is ambushed, and only the prisoners, a Union sergeant and his beautiful daughter survive, and now they find themselves stranded in a mountain pass with no horses or hope for rescue. The sergeant vows that he will get the prisoners to their final destination but has to protect his daughter from the bloodthirsty gang and figure which one of the raped and murdered his wife in the process."

The article continues, "Gudino says the potential for Cut-Throats Nine is what interested him in the project in the first place, and he has the blessing of the original’s director to improve upon it as he sees fit."

Check out the trailer to the original CUT THROATS NINE below!

Original CHAINSAW Co-Writer Preps New LEATHERFACE Movie?!

Kim Henkel recently chatted with FANGORIA about THE WILD MAN OF THE NAVIDAD, the new film he produced when the conversation eventually led to the subject of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE. After all, Henkel co-wrote the original 1974 classic with Tobe Hooper. Surprisingly, Henkel is planning a new Leatherface outing, despite the recent redux treatment by the dreaded Platinum Dunes with THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING.

told FANGO, "I have just completed a script for a new one, and it will not be made by Platinum Dunes. I’ve just done the first draft, and I’m still unsure of which way I’m going to go with it. However, it’s the first time since the original that I’ve done something that I wanted to do with it. I’m excited about being able to truly realize what I’ve put down on paper." This seems like exciting news to us fans. After all, I do miss the original eccentric bunch that made up the Sawyer family. (Screw the Hewitts!)

However, Henkel did also write & direct THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: A NEW GENERATION, which I'm still trying to figure out. Regardless, he has high hopes for the new script. “Let me say that it moves the whole situation forward. It places everything in the present, and is very much a product of these times. It leaves behind the setting of ‘30 years ago.’ ”

DONNIE DARKO Sequel, S. DARKO Starts Shooting THIS Month?!

This kind of came out of nowhere! In an unexpected announcement, Screen Daily is reporting that production on a sequel to the cult-classic favorite DONNIE DARKO titled S. DARKO starts shooting May 18th!

The new movie follows Daviegh Chase (THE RING), who reprises her role as younger sister Samantha Darko. She will be joined by Ed Westwick (100 FEET, SON OF RAMBOW, GOSSIP GIRLS), Briana Evigan (STEP UP 2) and Justin Chatwin (THE INVISIBLE, DRAGON BALL) in the cast. According to the article, "The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions." Well, when your older time-traveling brother gets killed by a jet engine, I'd assume it'd do a little something to your mental state!

Chris Fisher, who previously helmed NIGHTSTALKER and RAMPAGE: THE HILLSIDE STRANGLER MURDERS will direct. Fisher said in a statement: "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality." Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage. Simon Crowe of UK distributor Velvet Octopus says, "Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits. I think there is a new generation of cinema-goers who will be very excited to see this film." Shooting will take place in Salt Lake City, UT later in the month! We'll keep you posted when we hear more!

Alan Rowe Kelly Making New DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT!

FANGORIA is reporting that indie filmmaker Alan Rowe Kelly is remaking the indie cult classic DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT. In the article, Kelly told Fango, “The opportunity arose, and surprisingly no one had yet attempted a re-adaptation." The original (directed by S.F. Brownrigg) takes place in a mental institution where the head doctor has been murdered, and a new nurse discovers that the inmates have started to take over. The new version will be written and helmed by Kelly and Anthony G. Sumner. Kelly regulars Zoë Daelman Chlanda and Jerry Murdock, BLOOD SHED’s Terry M. West, Jeff Dylan Graham (OCTOBER MOON), Debbie Diverde, Marv Blauvelt and Kelly himself will all star in DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT. Kelly continues, "We thought it appropriate to remake this low-budget gem as it was intended, by keeping it a low-cost feature. Of course, our treatment warranted many updates to make it current and believable in today’s age, but we didn’t want to lose the main focus of the storyline. Fresh characters have been added, and excellent twists will be incorporated to give new shocks to the film without losing the original’s flavor."

Things were so hectic at this past weekend's LA FANGO show, that sadly I missed Clive Barker's panel. However, SHOCK caught it, and the big scoop of the panel was the announcement of the next BOOKS OF BLOOD adaptation making it's way to the big screen. Anthony DiBlasi is writing and directing DREAD based on Barker's short story. The flick is currently casting and looking to shoot by June. Barker's Seraphim Films is producing DREAD. According to SHOCK, "Eclipse adapted Barker's story for the comic book medium in the '90s with writer Steve Niles and artist Dan Brereton." As for the synopsis? "In the story, Quaid, a student of philosophy, is obsessed by his own nightmare of an ax-murdering clown so he concocts a series of experiments to observe firsthand how other people react to the things that most horrify them. But while Quaid slowly unpeels the psyches of his imprisoned and tortured captives like a reeking onion, his own dread waits, just beyond his control." With MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN right around the corner, and DiBlasi at the helm for this new flick, count us excited for DREAD!

We just reported that Ashley Laurence and Tobin Bell were part of the cast for BUMP, the latest flick by Robert Kurtzman based on the comic book. Now, Dread Central just scored some more casting news... Sean Patrick Flanery! I already love the BUMP comic book, so I'm beyond excited for the flick, but THE BOONDOCK SAINTS is one of my all-time favorites, so the casting of Flanery has me at a fever pitch! Flanery also played Greg Stillson on THE DEAD ZONE TV series based on the Stephen King novel with Anthony Michael Hall. More on BUMP as we hear it!

Robert Kurtzman's BUMP With Ashley Laurence & Tobin Bell!

Robert Kurtzman (the K in KNB) is set to direct BUMP, based on the short lived comic book series of the same name from FANGORIA COMICS. As an avid reader of comic books, I genuinely thought BUMP was one of the best horror comics I'd read in ages, and I'm thrilled at the prospect of seeing a full-on movie adaptation, especially with Kurtzman at the helm. Producer Scott Licina announced that HELLRAISER vet (and all-around natural beauty) Ashley Laurence has joined the cast as Elaine. Tobin Bell (JIGSAW himself!) also stars and produces! According to B-D, "The film is a supernatural tale of extreme horror, where even the confines of the grave aren't able to contain the brutal spirit of serial killer Edgar Dill, and his legion of monstrous Treehuggers." Dread Central also says you can download all 4 issues of the comic series at the Wowio website! Check it out! It gets my highest recommendation!

Wrtier, Director Attached To TOOLBOX MURDERS 2!

FANGORIA is reporting that makeup FX veteran Dean Jones will be making his directorial debut with TOOLBOX MURDERS 2, the sequel to Tobe Hooper's remake of the original 1978 film of the same name. Jeffrey Reddick, who's penned the screenplays for the recent DAY OF THE DEAD remake, TAMARA and the original FINAL DESTINATION is set to write the script for TOOLBOX 2. Jones drops a few hints about what to expect in the article, "The story will pick up where the first movie left off. We will be bringing back Nell and her husband, plus a few other characters. The story will continue to take place in Hollywood. This time you will see more of the killer, there will be more murders and more of a backstory about where he’s from and how he came to be." Weather Angela Bettis will return in the part of Nell is yet to be determined. Click HERE to read more on TOOLBOX MURDERS 2.

No Joke! Danielle Harris, Heather Langenkamp & Ellie Cornell Pulling PRANK!

I'm sure considering the date this sounds like a "prank", but Fangoria broke the scoop that genre vets Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN 4), Heather Langenkamp (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) and Ellie Cornell (HALLOWEEN 4) are each directing a segment of an anthology film called PRANK. (Seriously!) The unique flick is being produced by Anthony Masi and Thommy Hutson, whom are also producing the recently announced FRIDAY THE 13TH documentary. Masi explains, "We came up with the idea of stories revolving around pranks that go terribly wrong. In one story, a group of friends are playing a game where they dial seven-letter names. One girl dials her own name and reaches a guy who decides to turn the tables on her. In the second, a woman is waiting for her boyfriend to come home. Things start happening, paranoia sets in and then the phone rings…" Masi continues, "Sure, it’s a hell of a gimmick and that’s one of PRANK’s big selling points. We’ve got the women from the HALLOWEEN and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movies directing their first films, and everybody loves these gals.”

What A Crock! ROGUE Gets Limited Release Later This Month!

WOLF CREEK director Greg McLean's long-delayed killer crock movie ROGUE starring foxy Radha Mitchell (SILENT HILL) and Michael Vartan (ALIAS) will finally hit theaters on April 25th. But... it's only opening in 10 markets. (To give you a rough idea what that means, DIARY OF THE DEAD opening in 25 markets across the country. Meaning it'll be impossible to find a theater playing it.) Fangoria broke the scoop on this. Hopefully this means a DVD release can't be too far off. From what we've heard, ROGUE is actually quite good!

Director William Malone (HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL) checked in with Fangoria about his latest film PARASOMNIA, which stars (genre fave) Jeffrey Combs and Patrick Kilpatrick. The filmmaker tells FANGO, "PARASOMNIA is a very different kind of film for me. I can’t really explain why, but when you see it, you’ll understand. In many ways, it’s a modern dark fairy tale. Everything in it is slightly skewed from reality—in some cases, a lot more than slightly. Nearly all the characters are ‘off’ in one way or another, which makes for a lot of fun." SHOCK is reporting that a script by Ian Malone and Andrew Goring has been making the rounds through various casting agencies under the title of URBAN DECAY. Of note though? FEAST 2 Details Emerge! Who's Back?!

Fangoria's website has the first report and pictures from the set of FEAST 2: SLOPPY SECONDS! FEAST director John Gulager is back and recently shot FEAST 2 back to back with FEAST 3. Who else is back?! Writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who after the first FEAST went on to write SAW IV and SAW V and are currently scripting the new HELLRAISER remake. And the article reveals some surprising returning cast members. Here's a clip! "FEAST 2 picks up directly following the final moments of the original, with the surprisingly alive Bartender (Clu Gulager) being rescued by Biker Queen (Diane Goldner), who’s none too pleased that her twin sister Harley Mama was made into an IED in the first film. Sexy actress Jenny Wade is also back as Honey Pie. Judah Friedlander returns—despite his death in the franchise-starter—and the director explains that the comic appears “in a guilt dream Honey Pie has, because in my film the hot chick dreams about the fat guy.”

The article also states that "Pies" is being produced under Shepis, (Rolfe) Kanefsky and Esther Goodstein's Nightmare Works SKG banner. "PIES," "tells the story of two beautiful dumb blondes who get accepted into the hottest sorority on campus only to be chosen as virgin sacrifices for a demonic creature that the sorority sisters worships for their continual wealth, beauty, and power." FANGORIA RADIO recently spoke with author Jack Ketchum who's latest novel adaptation RED premiered at the Sundance film festival earlier this year. RED marks the third adaptation of his work, following THE LOST and THE GIRL NEXT DOOR. "I’m three for three," Ketchum told FANGO. "Like the other two films, RED doesn’t compromise, though it’s the most mainstream of the three films. I’m very happy with it. Brian Cox sat next to me at the screening, and he has been acting for 50 years. He turned to me, kind of nervous, and said, ‘It really is good, isn’t it?’ " That's right. Brian Cox is the lead in RED, which also co-stars Robert Englund, Kim Dickens, Amanda Plummer and Tom Sizemore. What I didn't know is that original director Lucky McKee (MAY, THE WOODS) left the project and was replaced by Norwegian director Trygve Allister Diesen.

Is MADMAN MARZ Coming Back?!

At this past weekend's FEAR FEST convention in Dallas, Texas, we stopped by former Icons interviewee Paul Ehlers table, the man who played "Madman Marz" in the 80's slasher cult-classic MADMAN, and we couldn't help notice an interesting item among his 8 x 10's & fantasy knives. A teaser for a new MADMAN movie. Framed on his table was an 8 x 10 photo that read "MADMAN MARZ: THE LEGEND LIVES", "He'll find the Heart of Terror and Rip it Out!" (Coming) When asked about it, Paul confirmed that yes, there is a script for a brand new MADMAN movie written by his son Jonathan Ehlers and co-scripted by Paul himself. They're using the original title for the original film, which was MADMAN MARZ: THE LEGEND LIVES and it sounds like this new MADMAN acts as both a sequel/remake. An independent company is attached and they've got a few locations locked down for a potential shoot later this year. Gary Sales, the producer on the original film was also at the table on Friday and is rumored to direct this new version. We'll keep you posted.

Filmmaker Will Rot recently spoke to FANGORIA about his new full length project HELTER SKELTER. Rot was one of the filmmakers featured on the BLOOD DRIVE VOLUME 2 DVD release for his short film THE JOURNAL OF EDMOND DEYERS. He also completed a second short film titled DE RIGUEUR starring Edwin Neal and Alexandria Bevilacqua last year. Rot's version of HELTER SKELTER will be radically different from former interpretations. He told Fango, "There are, of course, historical facts that remain true to the case, which is why I have to use ‘Helter Skelter’ in the title, but other facts I’ve just straight-up changed. I've found a way to shake things up a bit, and put a new spin on an old tale. The most notorious crime in American history just got a hell of a lot worse.”

Let's just clear this up: A lot of reviewers are going to throw around "Shaun of the Dead" when reviewing "Severance" because it's a British produced horror-comedy, but the two films are extremely different. "Severance" cuts across and bends genres deftly that it's a horror-comedy that goes beyond just referencing other films and playing off genre conventions. Director Christopher Smith clearly knows the horror playbook, but isn't satisfied with just playing it strictly for laughs or scares. What at first seems to be something along the lines of "Friday the 13th" meets "The Office", ends up going off in a surprising direction which helps make "Severance" one of the most satisfying horror-comedies I've seen.
