'NIGHT FLYER''s Mark Pavia Returning To Directors Seat With 'SICK NICK'

Mark PaviaMark Pavia's 1997 adaptation of Stephen King's short story THE NIGHT FLYER, was certainly an underrated bright spot in otherwise undistinguished decade for the genre. When Icons of Fright caught up with Pavia in summer '06 he discussed a long-in-development script for called SICK NICK, a Christmas slasher, which at the time had caught the attention of Platinum Dunes.

Posted on Pavia's Facebook page today was link to Coll-Abbitt Productions, where it's been annouced that SICK NICK will soon go into production. This puts Pavia back in the directors chair for the first time since NIGHT FLYER.

The synopsis reads:

'House-sitting for the President of the University over Christmas break, Cindy Hart and her college classmates gear up for a crazy night of holiday fun when a massive snowstorm traps them inside without power. Undeterred, they continue to party, unaware of the horror that is about to pay them a visit – a human monster dressed in a red and white suit hell-bent on delivering his terrifying gifts.'

EVENT REPORT: SWEATSHOP at the NYC Horror Film Festival

When the Hammer Falls... It’s Gonna Hurt

Marquee for the NYCHFF

Imagine my surprise when X and I arrived at the Tribeca Cinema on Bowery Street in NYC, and it looked just like a bar.  No lit-up marquee, no ticket booth, nobody selling popcorn.  No throngs of horror fans at the ready for the NYC Horror Film Festival.  Just a glass door at a place called BLVD, a bunch of blue lighting and a lonely bartender scrubbing some glasses at the long bar.  Obviously we were at the wrong place.  After few phone calls and text messages, we were back on track.  Fortunately, I’m habitually early for everything, so even taking into account the walk between Penn Station and the Bowery, we had plenty of time to make our way back to the real Tribeca Cinema, which is on Canal and 6th.

Arriving at the right location, my second surprise hit:  my expectations of Tribeca Cinema were way off the mark.  What I thought would be a lush, cavernous theatre that would rival NYC’s greatest hotels in its opulence.  Hell, Robert DeNiro owns the place.  What I got was a nicely grungy little place, with a concession stand the size of a kitchen table and a theatre that was small, tight, and packed with raucous horror fans for the movie SWEATSHOP.

Tucked behind the hall to the theatres is a full-service bar, the cleanest looking part ofTed Geoghegan the cinema.  There, X and I found John Torrani, one of SWEATSHOP’s producers, and a  longtime friend of Icons of Fright.  Torrani was enjoying imbibing as another staunch Icons friend, Ted Geoghegan ran around wildly.  Ted co-wrote SWEATSHOP with the film’s director, Stacey Davidson, who was also in attendance.

The vibe, to put it plainly, was different.  People don’t usually carouse at a movie theatre, but there was much carousing before the film started.  As X and I are teetotalers, instead of drinking we made the rounds of the bar area.  A few people were promoting their wares, so I got some free t-shirts, and a free brain;  two of these people were promoting their low budget affair NIGHT OF THE LIVING HEADS, and as fate would have it, they live right around the corner from me.

As 7:30 rolled around, X and I entered the crammed theatre and sat first row..  Michael Hein, the NYCHFF’s promoter, acted as a stand-up comedian, dispersing information about the festival and giving out prizes, one of which I won;  how odd is it that my prize was a copy of THE LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE, which Mike Cucinotta and I had watched just four days prior?

A half-dozen of short films preceded SWEATSHOP.  Here’s the Fasso Fast Review of each:

“Detritus X-Mess”:  A one-minute, grim piece about how Christmas toys all get cast aside.  Playing decaying toys against a cheery Christmas poem and jingle was a wise choice.

“Death in Charge”:  A misnomer.  Death is actually klutzy and ends up babysitting a girl who wants to kill her mom.  The ending makes Death’s speech about the mother’s life irrelevant.  It also suffered from an uneven tone.

“Hunger”:  A confusing set of images where characters don’t exactly act logically.  The title led me to think cannibalism, but the payoff  doesn’t sell that well enough.

“Wheels of Death”:  Horror comedy that falls flat.  A rich, Irish girl kills a bicycle cop who keeps coming back.  I kept hearing “Thanks for the ride, lady!” but this short wasn’t even as ambitious as that segment of CREEPSHOW 2.  The piece tries to play off the humor in how the girl finds the incident as an annoyance.  But it just doesn’t work, as comedy or horror.

“The Sinkhole”:  One of my favorites of the shorts.  A salesman tries to close a deal over a piece of Pennsylvania land that’s full of sinkholes.  The seller turns out to be something different from what he seems.  I would’ve liked to see more of this, as the ending leaves it open for the rest of a film that would have some potential.

“Attackazoids, Deploy”:  I’ve never had such a fun time watching a piece of Communist propaganda.  This short made the most of its low budget, reveling in its bombastic cheapness.  It’s actually a sequel to an earlier short, and suggests more party line posturing to come.  The best I can say about this is that I now want to dig out the first installment, and I want to see the future episodes.

After “Attackazoids, Deploy” came SWEATSHOP, the main event of the evening.

SWEATSHOP PosterSWEATSHOP starts off with a shot of a naked, disoriented girl.  It becomes apparent that she’s in fear of something, and starts running.  Enter Officer Mike (played by Fangoria’s own Mike Gingold), who’s scared and a little too trigger happy.

Following the credits, a bunch of oversexed, unlikable ravers arrive and start to set up for a one-night event.  As the worm turns, everybody’s screwing everybody else (both sexually and otherwise), and that’s even before the warehouse’s tenant arrives, the Beast.  This humongous guy carries around an anvil on a steel bar that’s been driven through it, and he’s not shy about using it.  He’s got some mutated minions with him, and once he gets going, the carnage does not stop.

With its dark locations, grungy attitude and over-the-top violence, SWEATSHOP plays directly to the HOSTEL crowd.  Fans of torture porn will love scenes of Beast cutting off fingers, smashing victims, roughly cutting off penises, and obliterating one character’s entire lower body with his makeshift hammer.  This film is all about bodily destruction, and on that end it pays off, as the fans around me cheered loudly every time a new raver met a ghastly end.  For those with queasy stomachs or who aren’t fans of torture porn, SWEATSHOP is likely not the horror film for you.  If however, you are strong of stomach and enjoy watching unkind characters become fodder, Davidson and Geoghegan know you’re their target audience, and deliver the bloody goods directly to you.

I’m glad I made it to Tribeca.  Though I never made it to 42nd Street when it was 42nd Street, I get a feeling that DeNiro’s theatre is about as close as I can come.  Being there to support good friends and their movie made for a fine time, and I wish SWEATSHOP every success in finding distribution.

Now, we've got something else really special to share. Adam also did a 30 minute documentary of the original short film version of GRACE titled "It's A Girl: The Making of GRACE (2006)", primarily for the cast & crew and as a calling card for his documentary skills. He's literally been there since the beginning and he provides the features that are on the GRACE full length disc, so take a peek below at these rare behind the scenes videos of the original short film starring Liza Weil and Brian Austin Green. The Making Of The Original GRACE Short Film!

Yesterday we posted the original GRACE short film, which helped garner interesting into making the feature length version. (Which is now officially on DVD and Blu-Ray) Today, we wanted to share with you the making-of the GRACE short film. This 5 minute EPK was put together by resident ICONS staffer Adam Barnick who also went on to produce all the bonus features of the full length's DVD & Blu-Ray. Join Adam on set as he chats with writer/director Paul Solet, stars Liza Weil and Brian Austin Green as well as the WICKED EFX crew. Once again, this is the making of the short film version of GRACE, which you can watch both with & without commentary at our previous news post HERE! Enjoy!

ICONS EXCLUSIVE: The Original GRACE Short Film - WITH & Without Commentary!

It's no secret that ICONS OF FRIGHT has had a long history with filmmaker Paul Solet and his movie GRACE. We've been firm supporters of this talented up and coming writer & director since we first met him at a Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors show back in 2005 and we were there to help out when the time came for him to make his short film version of GRACE back in 2006. Since then (as the story goes), the fine gents over at Ariescope stepped in and helped get the feature length film made. With GRACE: "The Movie" now out & available everywhere on DVD and Blu-Ray, we thought it'd be fun to go back and look at the original 6 minute short film that started it all. Not only that but we also put together a second version of the GRACE short film with a commentary track by writer/director Paul Solet and FX artist (and ICONS scribe) Jason Alvino. Check out the short (starring Liza Weil and Brian Austin Green) below, and then watch it again with commentary!

In Defense Of GIALLO...

I like most horror fans have been clamoring for Dario Argento to deliver us something as interesting and exciting as some of his early works. I love stuff like OPERA, PHENOMENA (or CREEPERS as I remember renting it as a kid), TENEBRE (aka UNSANE), DEEP RED and of course SUSPERIA. Hell, I even love JENIFER, his episode for the first season of MASTERS OF HORROR, but... aside from that, I really haven't enjoyed Dario's work in quite some time.

With that said, I was able to get my hands on the script that Jim Agnew & Sean Keller wrote for GIALLO shortly after they wrapped shooting last year. I literally read it impatiently in one sitting. I truly believe it to be a terrific script and it gave me hope that Dario could potentially deliver his best film if only he could translate this script to film properly. And with Adian Brody as the lead, an Oscar winner (!) no less, I figured this was a sure bet.

Now, I haven't seen GIALLO yet, but... like most of you out there, I've been hearing the negative response from festival screenings to the finished product. It was one of the films most picked on by last month's FRIGHTFEST UK crowd, and as I skim through the message boards, I can't help but feel bad when people are cursing those "blasted American writers"...

OK. Let's think about this. What was the last feature length Argento movie you really enjoyed? Seriously. Really, really loved? MOTHER OF TEARS? DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? THE CARD PLAYER? SLEEPLESS? PHANTOM OF THE OPERA? STENDAL'S SYNDROME? I can honestly say I don't really like any of the above Dario movies I just mentioned. Sure, there's bits and pieces in all of them that I like, but overall, they're not good movies.

With that said, before you see GIALLO and before you dismiss it, I thought I'd throw out there the script that I read way back when to show you just how good I thought it really was. I'm sad that this script got lost in translation along the way, but regardless, here it is for all you devoted ICONS readers to check out. You deserve to know what could've been. Megan (Gerwig) is Sam’s best friend, who gives her a ride out to the house, and reluctantly leaves her there despite suspecting that something is amiss. Victor (Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloody fight for her life....

Tim Sullivan's DRIFTWOOD Premiering on CHILLER 9/11 @ 10PM!

Have you guys checked out Tim Sullivan's follow-up to 2001 MANIACS, DRIFTWOOD? If not, it's a great little film you should check out and it'll actually be premiering on Chiller TV this Friday September 11th at 10PM. Below is the full press release about the airing! Check it:

Tim Sullivan’s teen ghost story DRIFTWOOD will be making its network premiere on NBC Universal’s Chiller network Friday, September 11th at 10 PM.

THE STORY: Riddled with guilt over the loss of his rock star older brother, 16 year old David Forrester (Ricky Ullman) becomes obsessed with death, leading his misguided parents to send him to Driftwood, an "Attitude Adjustment Camp for Troubled Youths" run by the sadistic Captain Doug Kennedy (Diamond Dallas Page) and his brutal young henchman, Yates (Talan Torriero). Once there, David becomes haunted by the spirit of Jonathan (Connor Ross), a former inmate who met a mysterious end; a mystery whose resolution could very well be David's only way out..............

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY: After completing production on the horror comedy 2001 MANIACS, an admittedly over-the-top, decidedly non-PC “Splatstick”, co-writer/director Tim Sullivan found himself disturbed by a post-Columbine trend in America; the proliferation of privately owned and run “Attitude Adjustment Camps” for youths deemed troubled and problematic by their parents. Though some youth, in fact, may require severe response to their crimes and violence (i.e. hardened youth offenders who actually find their way into the government run juvenile prison system), the psychology (and business plan) behind these “Adjustment Camps” is to play upon the fears of wealthy parents unable to relate to their teenager that Little Johnny’s troubling behavior may actually be the budding seeds of the next teen “Columbine Killer”. The horrid part is that the definition of ‘troubling’ could easily be that Junior listens to AFI and HIM, reads FANGORIA magazine, wears black, has piercings in unseen places, and (horror of all horrors) may actually prefer the same sex to the girl next door. Thus, on a regular basis, kids who just don’t click with Mom and Dad are being shipped to attitude adjustment camps all over the USA, where they are brutalized, programmed and in some extreme cases, actually murdered (as recently exemplified by the headline making death of a young boy in such an Attitude Adjustment Camp in Florida). The greatest nightmare of all— If Little Johnny is under the age of 18, he’s got no legal rights whatsoever, and if Mom and Dad sign him over, he’s a prisoner till he turns 18. And so, with 2001 MANIACS and SNOOP DOGG’S HOOD OF HORROR under his belt, Sullivan enlisted writing partner Chris Kobin to tackle another type of horror for his follow-up. A complete flip in vibe from the broad tone of his first two features, DRIFTWOOD is a character driven supernatural thriller that has been described as STAND BY ME meets GHOST STORY. It’s Sullivan’s way of expressing his driving philosophy (as expressed in his first producing effort, the cult classic DETROIT ROCK CITY) that no one should be forced to be what they are not, for if and when that does occur, the real nightmares truly do take shape… Welcome to DRIFTWOOD.

Sullivan is currently editing the follow-up to 2001 MANIACS (entitled BEVERLY HELLBILLYS), which will have its US premiere at the American Film Market this November.

FRIGHT GIRL Rachel Grubb Delivers HAUNTED KIRA & WHY AM I IN A BOX!

Remember our former February 2008 FRIGHT GIRL Rachel Grubb? Well she's been busy since her FRIGHT GIRL debut and got in touch to let us know about the 2 most recent projects she's taking part in. First up, she'll be starring in a feature called HAUNTING KIRA and the most recent press release just announced Joanna Angel as a co-star. Here's the details:

Joanna Angel joins sexy cast of HAUNTING KIRA

Producers say the Princess of punk is a perfect fit for story of a ghost that has reanimated a rotting corpse and roams the streets of Las Vegas.

As if its cast wasn't hot enough, "HAUNTING KIRA" broke the news Thursday night on Twitter that Joanna Angel will be joining the independent horror film's roster.

As the head of her own adult production company (Burning Angel Entertainment), Joanna Angel has directed more than 20 films and appeared in over 60.

The award-winning pioneer and princess of punk porn joins the likes of Rachel Grubb ("Strip Club Slasher"), Kathleen Kinmont ("Bride of Re-Animator"), Monique Dupree ("Skeleton Key 2") and Donna Hamblin ("Killer Biker Chicks") in the project that was written and will be directed by special effects artist Teresa Fahs of Gorify.com fame. Also on board is Ari Lehman, who is best known as the first actor to play Jason Voorhees in the "Friday the 13th" franchise.

"Haunting Kira," which prides itself as a “Women in Horror” production, tells the story of a ghost that has reanimated a rotting corpse and roams the streets of Las Vegas.

"Could we do a Sin City zombie film without at least one porn star?" producer Chad Clinton Freeman jokingly asks. "Seriously though, Joanna Angel is a perfect fit for our film. 'Haunting Kira' is an exploration into diversity, individuality and identity and she's an entrepreneur that got where she is by doing things her own way."

Joanna will play a character named Cindy Sinn, who seduces another female character in the stall of a bar bathroom.

"As those who know my art work can attest, I'm committed to realism," Fahs said. "So when it came to casting the right actress for our hot girl-on-girl sex scene, Joanna was the natural choice. I'm delighted to be working on this project with yet another free-thinking, gutsy woman that I genuinely respect."

Specializing in parody, alt and horror, Joanna's film credits include "Porny Monster," "Repenetrator," "The XXXorcist," "Joanna's Angels," "Punk Rock Pussycat Dolls" and "L.A. Pink."

The Rutgers University graduate, who has called the Suicide Girls "the McDonald's of alt porn," most recently appeared in Sean Cain's indie horror film "Breath of Hate."

The F-Team (Fahs and Freeman) released news of Joanna joining their cast via their Twitter accounts and the film's website (www.hauntingkira.com). Fahs can be followed at http://twitter.com/gorify and Freeman can be found at http://twitter.com/pollystaffle.

On top of that, Grubb is also part of her own production company and making her directorial debut with WHY AM I IN A BOX. Details on that below:

MINNESOTA FEMALE FILMMAKERS MAKE MAJOR DEBUT

The best vampire film ("Near Dark"), the best romance ("The Piano") and the best thriller ("Ripley's Game"): What do they have in common? They're all the work of women. Lady directors can rule the world. They get cinema, the magic, the mystery of these flipbooks on speed. No matter what the menfolk say, Tinsel Town is becoming a matriarchal society.

Just to prove it right, SILENT-BUT-DEADLY PRODUCTIONS, a home-grown all female production company dedicated to women in film, is having its first premiere on SEPTEMBER 24TH at RIVERVIEW THEATER. Included in the event are the feature WHY AM I IN A BOX, Written and Directed by “13 Hours in a Warehouse” star Rachel Grubb, as well as the three shorts YOUNG EYES, A BROKEN FAMILY, and A YOUNG HEART, Directed by Brooke Lemke.

Above all, Brooke Lemke and Rachel Grubb, stars of “Cave Women on Mars” and the producers of SILENT-BUT-DEADLY PRODUCTIONS, want to do things their way. Every frame will be distinctly their own. No compromise. No masculine middle man. Nothing between their minds and the movies they want to make. WHY AM I IN A BOX concerns a lazy writer and her deranged muse. YOUNG EYES and A BROKEN FAMILY look at family dysfunction, and the dysfunction between young women and their self-images.

The duo's first three films will debut on SEPTEMBER 24th at the RIVERVIEW THEATER, doors will open at 8:45pm, and screening begins at 9:30. There will be a Q&A with the Filmmakers and Company Owners until 11:30pm.

Horror Realm Convention Background

Horror Realm is an offshoot of Pittsburgh’s popular Zombie Fest, which was held in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, the name and format were revamped to distinguish the event as a convention encompassing all aspects of horror as well as zombie culture.

Entering its third year in 2009, Horror Realm has positioned itself as Pittsburgh’s modern horror
convention as a complement to the region’s long running Monster Bash, the international classic
monster movie conference and film festival, which celebrates classic horror and science fiction films
(from the silent era through the 1950’s).

Horror Realm features:
- A dealer room with local, regional and national vendors offering various horror-themed items for sale including movies/DVD’s, apparel, jewelry, collectible figures, comics, Halloween costumes, make up and decorations, artwork, etc.
- Well-known celebrity guests from horror and zombie films including Bill Moseley, Tony Todd, Ken Foree, Leslie Easterbrook, David Naughton, Tiffany Shepis and Robert Zdar, among others.
- Author panels featuring award winning, best selling and emerging horror writers including SG Browne, Jonathan Maberry, Kim Paffenroth and many more appearing courtesy of Library of the Living Dead Press, Permuted Press and Joseph Beth Booksellers.
- A film festival celebrating the spirit of independent films and featuring a film competition
- Demonstrations of special effects make up by students of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh
- Fan contests and entertainment

The Pittsburgh area has a rich horror history. Numerous horror movies have been filmed in the region including Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Martin, The Silence of the Lambs, The Mothman Prophecies and My Bloody Valentine 3D, to name but a few. The region has also spawned a number of popular television horror hosts from “Chilly Billy” Cardille to the fictional Count Floyd (from SCTV) to modern day host Professor Emcee Square of The It’s Alive Show. Pittsburgh is also known as the Zombie Capital of the World because of its prominent place in the George Romero zombie films. And the city is three-time holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of zombies at Monroeville Mall, site of the original Dawn of the Dead film. World Zombie Day, an international charity event featuring zombie walks and food drives worldwide, got its in Pittsburgh. Horror Realm is proudly produced by native Pittsburghers as a hometown convention celebrating the local horror influences as well as to serve as an attraction for horror aficionados everywhere. The convention hopes to spur tourism interest in the area as well as economic development for the venue and surrounding areas.

Kelly McGillis Joins Cast Of STAKE LAND!

Dark Sky Films and Glass Eye Pix announced today that Kelly McGillis ("Top Gun," "Witness," "The Accused") has joined the cast of the epic vampire road film "STAKE LAND," currently filming in New York and Pennsylvania.

The film, written by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici and directed by Jim Mickle ("Mulberry Street"), takes place following a global spread of vampirism. McGillis plays a nun who joins a small team of survivors (including Damici, Danielle Harris of "Halloween" and "Halloween 2" and Conor Paolo of "Gossip Girl") as they make a treacherous journey north to safety through the war-torn U.S. McGillis' character, "Sister," faces a crisis of faith during the vampire bloodshed, ultimately taking up arms to do battle with her newly formed family unit.

Says Dark Sky's EVP Greg Newman, "Jim and Nick have written a uniquely intense part for "Sister", and we are thrilled to see Kelly McGillis in the role. This is a very ambitious project, with a genuinely epic sweep, and we cannot wait to bring it to audiences next year."

The film is produced by Dark Sky Films and Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix with producers Derek Curl, Peter Phok, Brent Kunkle, Adam Folk, and Fessenden, who also appears in the film. Says Fessenden, "I have been wanting to work with Jim Mickle since I saw his short films years ago. My enthusiasm for his approach to genre was peaked with MULBERRY STREET, so when we were putting together the Dark Sky Slate, Mickle was on my short list of directors. I think this one will add legions of fans."

Glass Eye Pix and MPI recently teamed up to produce Ti West's "House of the Devil," which is slated for a fall release from Magnolia pictures and "Bitter Feast," which recently wrapped principal photography.

POSSUM WALK One-Sheet Poster & Images!

Horrorphile Entertainment, in association with Bloodbrick Pictures, is proud to debut their brand spanking new one-sheet for their movie POSSUM WALK. The image was designed by Jimmy Hazard, who also designed one-sheets for THE FLESH KEEPER and WALKING DISTANCE. “Jimmy totally understood what it was we wanted in a poster. We gave him a very basic idea of what the movie was about, and he ran with it. He works insanely quick, too. From concept to reality, the whole process took maybe two weeks,” reports writer/director Jeremy Sumrall.

Furthermore, Horrorphile Entertainment and Bloodbrick Pictures are proud to announce that principal photography on POSSUM WALK is “…about 98% complete”, according to Sumrall (star of SWEATSHOP). “We have one or two dialogue scenes left to film, and then a couple of FX pickup shots. Little stuff we weren’t able to pull off quite the way we wanted, naturally.” Sumrall went on to say that “…the production has gone much smoother than I could have anticipated. I have an amazing cast and hard-working crew supporting me in this endeavor. I’m eternally grateful to each and every one of them for helping to bring my creation to life.”

For those uninitiated few who don’t already know, POSSUM WALK is “…a dark, dramatic film about small-town Southern living, which is controlled by fear, ignorance, and - perhaps worst of all – religion. A young virgin named ‘Faith Carpenter’ – played beautifully by newcomer Maggie Conwell – discovers she’s pregnant, and begins having terrible visions of demonic goings-on as a result. Her widower father, ‘Brother William Carpenter’ – played with gusto by indie genre fave Parrish Randall (VICIOUS, QUICK AND THE UNDEAD) – struggles with a few demons of his own. And, as things are boiling over between these two, a masked killer picks the sleepy little town to become the newest venue for his insanity – sexually abusing and killing the women of the town – but not necessarily in that order.”

Teaser Look At THE GATEKEEPER!

The official website for the indie movie THE GATEKEEPER has opened with both a short & long form teaser trailer of the upcoming horror flick. Recently shot in Berlin, this short film version stars Kristina Klebe (HALLOWEEN, ZONE OF THE DEAD) and is meant to set-up and show the tone for the upcoming feature length version. Click HERE or head over to http://www.thegatekeeper-movie.com to check out the trailer, along with some behind the scenes pics. (We recommend the "short teaser" as the long one is slightly spoiler-ish)

Directed by Dominic Mueller from a script by Andreas Knop, THE GATEKEEPER short stars Andrea Lui, Kristina Klebe, Marvin Gronen, Daniel Roesner & Reiner Schoene as the title character. Synopsis is below!

Ever since World War Two, Berlin's underground has been filled with bunkers, remains of Hitler's Germania, as well as abandoned subway lines and "ghost stations," remains of the divided Cold War city.

It is a dark, scary, yet fascinating world that even today holds many secrets.

This is the world of "The Gatekeeper."

On another sleepless summer night in Berlin, Detective Becker gets an anonymous phone call telling him where to find the four American students that went missing one year ago.

But what's left of the two young couples (Melissa & Eric, Grace & Joshua) are only four burned, mutilated bodies and a camcorder - all laying in the pitch black darkness of an abandoned subway line.

Forced by the government to keep his investigation a secret, Detective Becker only trusts one man: Adam Jeffrey. Jeffrey, a veteran CIA operative, has been trying to catch "The Gatekeeper" for nearly 30 years. However, there have never been any leads before. So why now?

Hitting "Play" on the camcorder, the audience, along with Becker and Jeffrey, is transported into the horrific world of survival and mind games that the two American couples face down in the abandoned bunkers of Berlin.

And will the legacy of "The Gatekeeper" survive? This is just the beginning...

Magnolia Acquires Bong Joon-Ho's Critically Acclaimed MOTHER!

New York – August 31st, 2009 – The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Bong Joon-Ho’s MOTHER, which debuted at Cannes in Un Certain Regard earlier this year to stellar reviews. Gearing up for a Bong Joon-ho retrospective, Magnolia has also acquired BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE, Bong’s 2000 debut which was previously unreleased stateside. Magnolia had a big hit in 2007 with Bong’s THE HOST, and is excited to be the American home for the filmmaker, one of the most dynamic and exciting on the world stage today.

MOTHER is a unique thriller about a mother’s primal love for her son. It stars Kim Hye-ja (in what critics are calling one of the best performances of the year) as a mother who throws herself body and soul into proving the innocence of her son who she believes to be wrongly accused of murder. The Korean selection for this year’s Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, MOTHER continues its prestigious run on the festival circuit this fall—it is an official selection in both the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Magnolia plans on releasing the film theatrically sometime early next year.

BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE is a dark comedy about an out-of-work college professor who is driven mad by the sound of barking dogs in his apartment building, eventually resorting to kidnapping them. Never released stateside, Bong’s directorial debut is a must-see for fans as it has hints of things to come with his later works, especially THE HOST.

“We are thrilled to be in the Bong Joon-Ho business again, and to be doing our first deal with CJ Entertainment,” said Magnolia Senior Vice President Tom Quinn . “MOTHER is one of the best films of the year from one of the world’s most versatile, exciting directors, and BARKING DOGS makes a great addition to our growing library. We want to be releasing Bong’s films as long as he keeps making them.”

“I'm very thrilled that Magnolia will be distributing MOTHER to the wider audience in North America ,” said Bong. “Having previously worked with Magnolia on THE HOST, I am well aware of their love and passion for film. I hope MOTHER can once again fuel up the interest of North American audiences in Korean cinema.”

‘We are very excited to find a passionate partner like Magnolia, who successfully launched THE HOST in North America and has a real understanding of Bong’s films,” said Senior Vice President Kini S. Kim for CJ Entertainment. “With Magnolia distributing both MOTHER, and BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE, we know his unique, fun and exciting filmmaking will reach wider audiences.”

UPDATE: Regarding The BEST BUY Exclusive 'GRACE' Blu-Ray Release!

This past Tuesday, we reported that BEST BUY exclusively release the Blu-Ray edition of Paul Solet's GRACE, almost a whole month before it's official release date on September 15th. The movie itself looks beautiful in hi-definition and the Blu-Ray (as well as the upcoming DVD) are brimming with tons of great special features, but we felt obligated to let you in on a slight error with the disc. The special features are not in the appropriate order.

Granted, as a paying consumer, you can watch the bonus features any which way you please. However, ICONS own Adam Barnick was responsible for all the supplemental material on the GRACE disc. What was originally intended as a feature length long documentary was instead divided up into 5 featurettes. (6 if you include Jake Hamilton's featurette from SUNDANCE) These features are meant to be played in a certain order to maintain a "feature length" documentary feel.

So if you pick up the Blu-Ray, THIS is the order you should watch the features in. (As listed on the back of the box):

- GRACE: Conception
- GRACE: Family
- Her Mother's Eyes: The Look Of GRACE
- GRACE: Delivered
- Lullaby: Scoring GRACE
- GRACE at Sundance

Enjoy!

Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It’s pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the ship. They can’t remember anything: Who are they? What is their mission? With Lt. Payton (Quaid) staying behind to guide him via radio transmitter, Cpl. Bower (Foster) ventures deep into the ship and begins to uncover a terrifying reality. Slowly the spacecraft’s shocking, deadly secrets are revealed…and the astronauts find their own survival is more important than they could ever have imagined.

2001 MANIACS Sequel Wraps Production! BEVERLY HELLBILLY'S On The Way!

Filmmaker Tim Sullivan has just wrapped production on the sequel to 2001 MANIACS, titled 2001 MANIACS: BEVERLY HELLBILLY'S. Word first came from the film's recently launched Facebook page. (Check it HERE!) Now, we've got the official press release below clarifying the cast for the new flick. Check it below:

MANIACS MOVE TO “BEVERLY” - “Devil’s Rejects” Star Steps Into Mayor’s Shoes in Franchise Reboot

"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 13th, 2009- Cult film veteran Bill Moseley (“House of 1,000 Corpses“) has just completed filming his role as Mayor Buckman in director Tim Sullivan’s latest installment of the horror/comedy franchise “2001 Maniacs”. The film, titled “2001 Maniacs:Beverly Hellbillys”, was shot entirely on location in Iowa.

According to Sullivan and producer Christopher Tuffin, it is as much a wild re-imagining of the preceding films as a sequel to them. Their intention was to raise the stakes beyond the ordinary glut of by-the-numbers horror releases to create a smart, genre-defying feature that pushes every limit to the extreme. Tuffin compares “Maniacs” to an episode of “South Park” or “The Simpsons” in the sense that “Maniacs” is nothing less than a carnival house mirror held up to American culture.

“Over the years I was approached many times to write and direct a sequel, but I waited until we not only had a storyline that served as a worthy successor to "2001 Maniacs", but also the creative freedom to push the envelope open even further in a smart and funny way”, says Sullivan. “Then on the eve of the election of Barack Obama as the nation's first African-American president, I saw the opportunity to once again use the residents of Pleasant Valley as vehicle to expose the deep rooted prejudices of all segments of our society in a way that would hopefully make everyone realize the absurdity of their biases, while also sneaking in a few laughs in at the same time.”

Moseley heads an ensemble cast that includes Lin Shaye (“Snakes on a Plane”), Nivek Ogre (“Repo! The Genetic Opera”) Christa Campbell (“Day of the Dead”), Ahmed Best (“Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”), Trevor Wright (“Shelter”) and telenovela vixen Andrea Leon (“Hood of Horror”).

The film is being financed in part by Tax Credit Finance and Iowa based Southern Discomfort, LLC. The film is being produced by BloodWorks' Christopher Tuffin (who also produced the previous installment), as well as Martin Shore and Mike Greene. Anthony Gudas, Matthew Chausse, David F. Friedman and Patrick Wabl serve as executive producers.

The film is being repped internationally by IM Global Home Entertainment, who have already secured distribution deals in the UK (Anchor Bay UK), Germany (Tiberius), Eastern Europe (SPI), Australia (Beyond), Middle East (Falcon), Turkey (D-Productions), Singapore (Golden V) and Taiwan (SSG).

“For horror fans internationally this is a great package – an established franchise, a cult director, a horror veteran like Bill Moseley surrounded by a hot young cast. We are very excited,” says Catherine Quantschnigg, head of sales for IM Global Home Entertainment.

The finished film will be unveiled at this year's American Film Market in November."

Also, actress Christa Campbell wrote a blog for her FearNET column about the shooting experience on the new MANIACS. You can check that out HERE or at the following link:

SAW Writers & Clive Barker Team Up For HOTEL!

Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the writers of SAW IV, SAW V, SAW VI & the recently released THE COLLECTOR have teamed up with Clive Barker for a Warner Brothers television series titled Clive Barker's HOTEL. The Hollywood Reporter says, "Plot details are being kept under wraps, but "Clive Barker's Hotel" is expected to follow a series of ghoulish incidents at a haunted hotel. Barker, the creator of the landmark horror franchise "Hellraiser" and other well-known genre properties, is attached to produce, while McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision is in talks to produce. Barker associate Joe Daley will co-produce."

The writing duo is no stranger to Barker's material as they were among the many writers that took a crack at the still in-development HELLRAISER remake. (You can read more about that in our recent chat with them HERE.) The series is still in the early stages, so we'll keep you posted when we hear more!

IMAGO is about a young woman investigating the disappearance of her brother. Inside his seemingly-normal apartment, she finds the past, present, and future colliding within an alternate dimension - and with reality slowly transforming into a seething Lovecraftian nightmare, she only has so much time to solve the mystery of what has happened in this dark place and somehow escape with her life.

It is directed by newcomer Chris Warren and produced by Mel House's Upstart Filmworks, with a screenplay by Warren and House. It is associate produced by Ted Geoghegan (Barricade) and musician Jonah Matranga.

It is currently filming in Houston, Texas.

Larry Fessenden Tapped To Direct THE ORPHANAGE!

Yes, like most of you, I'm always skeptical when it comes to remakes, especially those based on incredible foreign films that just came out. However, Hollywood is relentless and is GOING to keep making them whether we like it or not. So when a filmmaker I really like gets attached to a film that seems custom tailored to their sensibilities, I breath a sigh of relief knowing that it's in good hands. In this case, it's the American remake of the fantastic Spanish flick THE ORPHANAGE. (Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona) The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Larry Fessenden will be directing the new version from a script he co-wrote with Guillermo Del Toro.

The article says, "The 2007 pic was directed by del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona and centered on a woman who, upon returning to the orphanage where she grew up, discovers that her son's imaginary friend is the same person who terrorized her when she was a child.

Fessenden's selection signals the out-of-the-box approach that del Toro and the studio are taking on the remake. They are eschewing another Spanish director to fill Bayona's shoes, and they are not putting the project in the hands of a commercial/music video helmer.

Rather, Fessenden, repped by WME and Renee Tab at Artist Talent Management, is a filmmaker who has worked in the low-budget horror world for some time, making such movies as "Wendigo" and "The Last Winter" while appearing in pics like "I See the Dead."

Del Toro and Fessenden know each other from the horror circuit, with del Toro's admiration of the triple-hyphenate's work leading him to handpick him for the directing gig; del Toro saw in him a filmmaker who understood the conventions of the horror genre and could execute a movie that would be as scary and disturbing as the original but in an American context."

Casting is currently underway. But with Fessenden and Del Toro, THE ORPHANAGE is in good & able hands.

Click the frame below to read our now classic interview with LARRY FESSENDEN from last year, which is still among one of our all time favorites!

More when we hear it!

But this steel scrap contains the brain of the M.A.R.K. 13, the military’s most ferocious bio-mechanical combat droid. It is cunning, cruel, and knows how to reassemble itself. Tonight, it is reborn…and no flesh shall be spared. Stacey Travis (GHOST WORLD) co-stars – along with appearances by Iggy Pop, Lemmy of Motörhead and music by Ministry and Public Image Ltd. – in this kick-ass sci-fi thriller that New York Newsday hailed as “thought provoking and disturbing”, and Fangoria still calls “gritty, trippy and frightening…HARDWARE is one of the best horror movies you’ve never seen.”

“They say 'once in every generation a plague shall fall upon you',” says director Richard Stanley, “and so it is that after an absence of almost two decades I am proud to announce the second coming of HARDWARE to American shores in its full, savage, psychedelic, utterly unexpurgated and wholly unrated glory. We have relished working with Severin films and Norman Hill of Subversive Cinema – who oversaw the successful 2008 release of DUST DEVIL – to fully restore, remix and remaster HARDWARE for its first appearance on DVD and to provide the viewing public with an experience unlike anything they have ever seen before. You have been warned!”

“One of the most ferocious sci-fi/horror films of our time is long overdue for rediscovery,” says Carl Daft, co-founder and CEO of Severin Films. “And to now be able to restore HARDWARE to Richard’s original vision is an absolute honor. Furthermore, the scope and breadth of never-before-seen materials being supplied by Richard virtually guarantees that this will be one of the top genre discs of the year. This is what you want, this is what you get.”

Severin Films was formed in 2006 with offices in Los Angeles and London. Their previous releases include THE SINFUL DWARF, recent Goya Award winner Jess Franco’s MACUMBA SEXUAL and BLOODY MOON, Walerian Borowczyk’s IMMORAL WOMEN, the unrated Director’s Cut of GWENDOLINE starring Tawny Kitaen, Oscar® nominee Patrice Leconte’s international hit THE HAIRDRESSER’S HUSBAND, and Enzo Castellari’s original action classic INGLORIOUS BASTARDS.

THE COLLECTOR: ICONS INTERVIEW!

On July 31st, THE COLLECTOR, the directorial debut of Marcus Dunstan will hit select theaters across the country. And as a genre fan you should take note. This indie flick was written by Dunstan with Patrick Melton, the duo whom have scripted not only the FEAST trilogy, but also SAW IV, SAW V and SAW VI. (They've just been tapped to write SAW VII) We got the chance to chat with them about all of the above, including the humble beginnings of THE COLLECTOR prior to the movie's premiere last night in Hollywood. Read on for our exclusive chat with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton!

Robg.: Where did the story for THE COLLECTOR come chronologically for you guys? Was this something you wrote after FEAST but before SAW IV?

Marcus Dunstan (Director, Writer): This was actually written before FEAST!

Patrick Melton (Writer): This started as a short film – to go way back, when I was in film school, I had to come up with ideas for short scripts for this Kodak endowment thing, where Kodak gave LMU all this money to make a short film and so Marcus and I had written “ROLLED BONES”, which was the first script before FEAST in 1999. And so we brainstormed together and we came up with this short script and it’s called THIEF, what if a thief broke into the house of a serial killer? We wrote the script and it didn’t get made for that thing, but afterwords, we decided let’s make this on our own & Marcus wanted to direct it. It was going to be a 10 minute short, but then we won PROJECT GREENLIGHT. So then it went on hiatus.

Robg.: Well, you guys were busy for a couple of years after that! (Laughs)

Patrick Melton: Right after (the first) SAW came out, everybody wanted that million dollar idea. Like a horror movie that you could make for under a million dollars, and you can make it in a contained location with a high concept. We had this idea and we ended up pitching it in a meeting to these guys who ended up producing this. They bought it in the room, with the agreement that Marcus would direct it. We finished the script, but the problem was the company said they didn’t have enough money so they were going to go halves with another company. Marcus didn’t have an appropriate reel so we couldn’t sell him as a director. So the company gave us $5000 to shoot the trailer to the movie, which would be stylized to show off Marcus as a director. So we did that. All the Gulager’s helped, Jon Gulager shot it. Clu Gulager was in it, Diane Goldner was in it, Tom (Gulager) was in it. It came out really good, and we started taking meetings showing people the trailer along with the script. Bob Weinstein ended up seeing it, watched the trailer, closed the door to his office and said “You’re not leaving this office until I get this movie.” So we sold it to him. A year or so later, we started shooting in Streetport, Louisiana with Marcus directing and we finished it. Edited it for about a year and then they watched it. (Marcus starts laughing) And said, “We love it! But… we don’t have any money.” Because all their money was in HALLOWEEN 2 and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS…

Robg.: (Sarcastically)Those pesky movies that no one’s going to see!

Patrick Melton: Right! So we said, “What if we bought it back?” And they said sure, as long as you give us what we spent for it then sure. Mickey Liddell watched it, really liked it, bought it back and here we are.

Robg.: Now let me ask you - I know very little about the movie beyond the initial premise. And you had this story for a while, but the general misconception is obviously - you guys have done the SAW sequels and THE COLLECTOR has “traps” in it. So, what can you say to genre fans that don’t know anything about the movie? How is this different from what we’ve seen in SAW IV, SAW V or SAW VI?

Marcus Dunstan: The difference between this and a SAW film is we’re coming from a point of a thriller intersecting with a horror movie. SAW has always taken place within the horror realm and has embraced that. Whereas we wanted to take James Caan from THIEF and have him accidentally break into The Tooth Fairy’s house from MANHUNTER. (Both Michael Mann movies, by the way!) Tactics to catch a cat burglar in your home, if you’re not going mano y mano from scene 1, it involved setting up some kind of snare. Perhaps setting up some kind of compromising position for that thief to have to endure. So we kept this as close to the vest and what you can really make from anything already in your home as possible. These things, if they are implements used in the movie, we built them ourselves in the living room. If you see razor blades? I cut my fingers on them for real to make sure they worked. And it’s just based on very intimate fears, things that are around your home, because we didn’t want this to be specific elaborate traps at all. We’re trying to create a villain that is the land equivalent of a shark. If you go into the water, a shark might get you. If you’re on land, you’re on this killer’s territory and everyone’s vulnerable.

Patrick Melton: The big difference too is I think the tone is very different. The SAW movies are wonderful because they almost seem like you’re going into a different world with the heightened reality, while this one, we tried to keep it much more grounded with things that are in your house. Thing that can be put together quickly that aren’t sort of too fantastic.

Robg.: It’s kinda like Nancy at the end of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Rigging the booby traps!

Patrick Melton: (Laughs) That’s so funny you say that.

Marcus Dunstan: I gotta say one thing. You’ve got to stay through the credits on this one, because we’ve rewarded the person that does! A little something extra.

Robg.: In terms of the SAW movies, you guys have both gone on record saying that SAW VI is one of your favorites, and probably the best one you’ve done. It seems you guys went into SAW IV, V and VI with an overall story arc. Now you guys are doing SAW VII. So is it interesting, challenging or different to start from scratch with SAW 7? Or are you continuing some of the threads that appeared in your trilogy?

Marcus Dunstan: A lot of SAW IV and SAW V really hinged on SAW VI coming together. And the way 6 did, it completely recharged our batteries creatively. 6 recharged us and it gave us new ground which we hope to mine more horror from.

Patrick Melton: What we were really trying to do was, we finished 6 and we were done with 6 before we even started thinking about SAW 7 to be honest. 6 ends and we wanted to end that arc from 4, 5 and 6. Those three, 4, 5 and 6 all make sense tying the stuff from the first 3 as well. And it ends! You could leave SAW VI and say ok, I’m done, I’m happy, I’m completely fulfilled. Now, with 7 we’re definitely turning the page a bit. It’s a new chapter. But you’ll see, and we can talk more in depth when you see 6, but you can where it’s going to go, but there is definitely a closure at the end of 6 and with 7, it is the beginning of a new trilogy. It’s the third trilogy for the SAW films.

Robg.: Is there any criteria going into PART 7 either from Twisted or Lionsgate, or are you guys free to go whatever direction you want?

Marcus Dunstan: No, there’s always been a bible and a cannon and an ultimate end game for them, so we have to respect the rules that have been established, and we have to respect the tone. Other then that, it is earned. Earn the audience.

Robg.: You’re both writers, and now Marcus is directing, but you also made a fun little cameo in Adam Green’s Halloween short film THE TIFFANY PROBLEM. Any chance we’ll see you acting in front of the camera again soon?

Marcus Dunstan: (Laughs) Based on my appearance in front of that camera, I think I’m going to have to do a little changin’ before I make any more appearances! (Laughs)

Robg.: I seriously just want to thank you guys for FEAST. That first movie was probably one of my favorite genre pictures since EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN. Just the same kind of energy, so I’m always indebted to you guys for writing FEAST!

Marcus Dunstan: Aw, right on! We didn’t want to let any Gulager’s go untouched in THE COLLECTOR. Diane Goldner’s in it. Jon Gulager helped us with some shooting. Tom Gulager was the 2nd unit director when we were shooting for 24 hours a day! Clu Gulager recorded some beautiful narration for us. So everyone (from the family) is in this one.

Robg.: This is more of a fan to fan inquiry. HELLRAISER is up next to be “rebooted” and there have been several writers brought in and you guys were amongst the bunch to take a crack at it. What was your take on it, and what’s made this new HELLRAISER so difficult to crank?

Marcus Dunstan: The treatment for it was beautiful, and what it did was… it just gave scale to what was only hinted at in the darkness and the shadows of the first entry. We didn’t want to go back and repeat that story if at all possible, because that first story was wonderfully told. So, it wanted to grab darkness and appreciate it much like a PAN’S LABYRINTH would. And Pinhead’s become more then just that ending guy that gives a few lines. He’s become a figure in horror cinema, so we wanted to respect that, and re-announce that and make it bigger. The problem with that first treatment? It was too darned expensive. It just was.

Patrick Melton: Our thing was – everyone knows Pinhead. You show Pinhead, people know exactly who he is, the average person - they may not know exactly which movie it is or they may not have seen a HELLRAISER, but they know him. We were trying to build up his backstory and make him a true supervillain. And so, a lot of the story had to do with fleshing out his backstory, which is revealed more in PART 2. We were combining elements of 1 and 2 and building up Pinhead as a bigger character. Because not only in his past life, but also in the time he’s spent in hell. Giving him an end game, an end goal, and making him much more active as opposed to just torturing people. I don’t know, it was just maybe too much minutia for Dimension. At the end of the day –

Marcus Dunstan: Sometimes when you’re a fan of a movie, you want to put a hell of a lot more in it then necessary. You want to see the dream version of it, when… maybe it needs to be sheer, severe and slick. And that might ultimately be the HELLRAISER that comes out. I don’t know.

Robg.: Besides THE COLLECTOR and SAW 7 obviously, what’s next? Anything you’re excited to tackle?

Marcus Dunstan: Well, I’d love to direct an adaptation of a graphic novel called DEAL WITH THE DEVIL by Mike Miller. It’s just a brilliant bad-ass plot and I think it would make one hell of a movie.

THE COLLECTOR is now playing!

Jason Mewes Joins Cast Of BREATH OF HATE!

Jason Mewes (“Clerks 2”, “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”) is set to star alongside Ezra Buzzington (“Halloween 2”) and Felissa Rose (“Return to Sleepaway Camp”) in the Velvet Hammer Films/ArsonCuff Entertainment production of “Breath of Hate.”

Directed by Sean Cain (“Silent Night, Zombie Night”) and written by Wes Laurie, “Breath” centers around a young woman in the escort business who, on her last job, is confronted by a trio of escaped mental patients looking to change the world - one victim at a time. "Audiences know him as the foul-mouthed Jay in the Kevin Smith movies, but he’s got a sweet side that’s the perfect counterpoint to the darkness in our story,” Cain says. “His character is a gamer nerd who falls for a escort. It’s through his love that he brings her back from being a walking suicide.”

Also joining the cast are Lauren Walsh (“18 Year Old Virgin”), Jack Forcinito (“Silent Night, Zombie Night”), Ted Prior (“Surf Nazis Must Die”) and Alexis Sibolis (“Plaguers”). “Breath” begins filming in late summer. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (Restored!) Comes To DVD October 13th!

One of the most revered slasher films of the 1980s comes home to Anchor Bay Entertainment as fans remember it… HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

It’s time to blow out the candles and sharpen the shish-kebab spears, because the classic 1980s’ slasher favorite Happy Birthday to Me is coming to DVD, courtesy Anchor Bay Entertainment. Street date is October 13, 2009, with a SRP of $14.98.

This edition of the film, however, has something missing from the previous DVD release does not – the film’s haunting orchestral score, as composed by Bo Harwood and Lance Rubin, which was NOT included on the first DVD release and which fans have been clamoring for.

It is yet another example of why Anchor Bay Entertainment is the undisputed leader in cult and classic horror home entertainment – they give the fans what they want.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME was directed by Academy Award® nominee J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone, 10 to Midnight, Murphy’s Law) and stars Emmy Award® nominee Melissa Sue Anderson (“Little House on the Prairie,” “Midnight Offerings”) and Golden Globe Award® winner and Hollywood legend Glenn Ford (3:10 to Yuma, Blackboard Jungle, The Big Heat, Superman), along with such familiar co-stars as Lawrence Dane (Scanners, Of Unknown Origin, Bride of Chucky), Daytime Emmy Award® winner Tracy Bregman (“The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Young and the Restless”) and Matt Craven (Public Enemies, Crimson Tide, Jacob’s Ladder).

Welcome to upscale Crawford Academy, where everybody – particularly new student Ginny Wainwright (Anderson) – wants to be a part of the school’s most popular clique. But now, it seems that they’re dying to get out, as a killer has been butchering the group’s members, one by one. Could a deadly accident from Ginny’s past be connected to the brutal killings? And as her 18th birthday approaches, will Ginny be the guest of honor at the most horrific party of all?

Part whodunit, part psychological thriller, part twisted black comedy and full-tilt, full-blooded shocker, the original theatrical ads for Happy Birthday to Me boasted “six of the most bizarre murders you will ever see!” -- and it delivered.

“Pure slasher fun from beginning to end,” raved DVD Drive-In, while Arrow in the Head called the film “downright nasty … a slit throat above the usual slasher flick!” Even the esteemed critic Vincent Canby of The New York Times had to admit: “The murders, which are the point of such a movie, are vividly demonstrated.” In a special retrospective devoted to the film in Fangoria (Issue #238), author Caelum Vatnsdal wrote: “Never in the shadowy slasher-film world has the potent cocktail of gore, directorial competence, old-time Hollywood star power and pure ‘80s outlandishness offered by HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME quite been equaled.” So popular is the legacy of HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME that is a remake is on the drawing (carving?) board -- and in 3-D, no less!

But for purists, there’s only one HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME -- and Anchor Bay Entertainment’s ready to cut the cake and serve it up!

2nd Teaser Poster For ALL ABOUT EVIL!

Below you'll find the second teaser poster for ALL ABOUT EVIL. You may remember the (awesome) premiere poster featured the film's star, Natasha Lyonne, covered in blood. (See that in our previous news post HERE!) This second poster showcases the hauntingly beautiful Jade and Nikita Ramsey who play "Veda" and "Vera"; killer twins who were institutionalized earlier in life after murdering their family at seven years of age. They are silent but deadly and were born knowing all about evil.

We're told there will be five more posters released over the next five months so that the collection will total seven, along with the first trailer once the official website goes live. We'll keep you posted on when that happens!

Something evil this way comes...

ALL ABOUT EVIL is the feature film debut of writer / director Joshua Grannell and stars Natasha Lyonne (Slums of Beverly Hills, But I'm A Cheerleader), Thomas Dekker (Sarah Connor Chronicles, A Nightmare On Elm Street), Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), Mink Stole (Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom), Noah Segan (Deadgirl, Brick), Jack Donner (Star Trek), Julie Caitlin Brown (Babylon 5), Patrick Bristow (Showgirls), Peaches Christ (Season Of The Troll), and many more!

ALL ABOUT EVIL is a wicked black comedy set in the world of a horror movie about a mousy librarian (Natasha Lyonne) who inherits her father's beloved but failing old movie house. In order to save the family business she discovers her inner serial killer - and a legion of rabid gore fans - when she starts turning out a series of grisly shorts. What her fans don't realize yet is that the murders in the movies are all too real!

The film was shot entirely in San Francisco and was born, nurtured, and birthed in the cult film underground. Writer / Director / Producer Joshua Grannell is also known as alter-ego and Midnight Mass impresario Peaches Christ. The movie was shot by award-winning cinematographer Tom Richmond (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, Chopping Mall) and was produced by Darren Stein (Jawbreaker writer / director), Brian Benson (Haiku Tunnel, Howl), and Debbie Brubaker.

Indie Flick HUNTING SEASON To Premiere On VOD August 1st!

Filmmaker Nathan Wrann's indie horror movie debut HUNTING SEASON will be available for 'video on demand' as of August 1st. Check out the full press release below with all the details, as well as the trailer.

"Hunting Season" Trailer from Nathan Wrann on Vimeo.

Connecticut based independent film production company Dalton Gang Productions recently closed a cable VOD distribution deal for its debut feature HUNTING SEASON. The brutal slasher-survivalist thriller will be premiering August 1st 2009 across the U.S, Canada and Puerto Rico through an agreement with Gravitas Ventures arranged by The Bosko Group. HUNTING SEASON will be on VOD for 90 days.

The Gravitas VOD deal will make the feature available to more than 13 million subscribers across the continental United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Gravitas programs 15 films per month to dozens of cable, satellite, and telco VOD providers including Charter Communications, DISH Network, RCN and Verizon FIOS.

HUNTING SEASON is the feature debut from director Nathan Wrann and Dalton Gang Productions. Husband and wife producing team, Nathan Wrann and Kimberly Dalton set out to create the horror movie they’d like to see — literate and coherent in plot, and brutal and unrelenting in tension. With HUNTING SEASON, they’ve hit the mark with a vengeance. Production began in the wet, hot summer of 2006 as they gathered their resources: a cast of 10 friends; access to13 acres of wooded property just outside New Haven, CT; 2 part time, crew members, a plastic-tip-of-the-shoestring budget and a large bucket of blood, sweat and tears. Despite these limitations Wrann and Dalton were able to realize their vision to the extent that Mr. Wrann calls HUNTING SEASON “A complete personal success.”

HUNTING SEASON’s plot follows 6 friends on a camping trip deep in the woods for, what should be, “the best weekend ever.” The good times take a turn for the worse when, after a tragic “accident,” a pair of sadistic hunters wreaks violent, bloody, unrelenting havoc on the stranded campers.

HUNTING SEASON is a brutal exploitation flick (consider yourself warned) inspired by, and paying homage to, those that came many years before it. The final product and subsequent national VOD release is a testament to the fact that a dedicated cast and crew and a writer/director with a clear artistic vision and integrity, can overcome the limitations of budget (less than $5,000) to create a movie scarier, more brutal and more engaging than many of those with far greater resources.

ORPHAN: ICONS INTERVIEWS!

I’ll admit it. I was slightly intrigued by the promotional poster for ORPHAN the first time I caught it at a bus stop back in New York. I couldn’t help but stare at this oddly photoshopped image and try desperately to figure out exactly what was wrong with Esther? Needless to say, whatever they did to the image worked because it got me to stop and examine it. But after that, I honestly didn’t have high expectations set up for yet another “evil child” horror movie. However, because my expectations were low, ORPHAN actually ended up exceeding my initial expectations and I left the theater more then satisfied by the experience. It’s a fairly solid little horror movie that definitely earns its R rating and delivers on some truly genuine shocking twists.

ICONS OF FRIGHT was invited to sit in on a series of roundtable interviews with various people involved in its creation including producers Joel Silver & Susan Downey, writer David Leslie Johnson, director Jaume Collet-Serra and actors Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard and Isabelle Fuhrman making her screen debut as Esther. The following is a series of quotes pulled from an array of topics we covered in the hour long interview session. Enjoy!

On the origins of the story & co-producer Leonardo Dicaprio?

Joel Silver: Appian Way is Leonardo’s production company, they had really come up with the idea for this movie and it was a horror movie they wanted to make. And he had sent off the script and Warners had read the script and thought this might be a great vehicle for us at Dark Castle to jump into. We met with Leo and his business partner and we felt that it was a great idea. Susan worked with them very closely to bid off the script and with the movie itself.

David Leslie Johnson: At the very beginning, the project was developed internally at Leo’s company Alpine Way, and one of his executives Alex Mace wrote a treatment for it. They basically were looking for a writer to adapt the treatment and get a fresh take on it. They only gave me the first 3 pages of it. Basically the beginning of the story, the family dynamic, who the characters were and Esther comes to the home – now what happens? So, I sort of took that, came up with the ending and worked backwards to match up with the story they had and pitched them that and that’s sort of how it came to be.

On casting Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther?

Susan Downey: It was pure old fashioned casting. We put a bunch of kids on tape and she just popped right out. And it was interesting because if you do read an early draft of the script, the description of the little girl is the complete opposite of what Isabelle actually looks like. She was supposed to have pure white skin, and blonde curly hair. It wasn’t her look, but she was so good in her audition and just stood out from all the other kids that it was a no brainer.

Joel Silver: Leo was making a movie in South Africa, BLOOD DIAMOND actually, and the way that you can cast now, there’s websites with protective locks so you can put up video of all the people testing for a role. Leo called me early one morning and said, “I saw this girl and she’s fantastic!” We hadn’t even seen it yet because he had been ahead of us in time, and he just said, “She’s the one. She’s the one.” He was very specific about that because being a child actor himself, he was very conscious of what that does and what that is and he was always concerned that this girl not be affected by the process. He was very conscious that she be very focused and not given too much information about things in the movie that might hurt her future.

Isabelle on portraying the character of Esther?

Isabelle Fuhrman: I read the script and I talked to my acting couch about the character and he helped me figure out different things I could do, because each person has different things. Some people bite their nails. Some people run their fingers through their hair, or scratch or itch. So I was thinking about different things I can do that would make Esther different from me, because she’s totally different from me. I like touching my hair, and I don’t do it all the time but I do run my fingers through my hair, so Esther I thought maybe would do something a little different. A little more swing in her step and she’d be a bit more girly because of her secret. I went to lunch once with Vera and we were at a restaurant I kept watching all these women, they kept looking at me like why is this girl starring at me? I was watching them for how they crossed their legs or tilted their heads. Or how they grabbed for their water. I was watching Vera a lot on set, and it all just helped and worked. On the day, it all came into place.

Susan Downey: The thing with Isabelle is she’s got great parents and they’re really smart. They’re incredibly supportive and with any movie you do, you always have a teacher on the set as well. You just kind of talk them through it to a certain point. You’re always conferring with the parents and with the teacher about what is appropriate and not. And what’s great, we saw this when Jaume was working with her and the other kids, there’s certain things you can explain in a somewhat adult way, and there’s other things you try and you see it’s just so above their experience level and you’re like “OK, just imagine that your sister just stole your toy.” (Laughs) You know? You have to really boil it down for them. But I think with Isabelle, she’s incredibly smart and very articulate. Her parents are the same way, so it made it very easy.

Isabelle Fuhrman: I had a dialect couch during the entire filming (in the movie, Esther has a thick Russian accent), so he’d come into my apartment where I was staying in and we’d go over the lines in the accent and we’d try to get different sounds. Like the W’s are different. My mom’s Russian, so I watched her a lot. Foreign people move their lips a different way. We tend to move our lips fully when we say something like “show”. But European’s keep their mouths kind of closed, they’re not very open when they talk. (Gives example.)

Isabelle Fuhrman: Well, my usual day was, I’d get my hair curls and then I got into my dress, I would go, I would transform into her and I would go about my day being her, being Esther. And um, something clicked. Every morning I would put on the dress and it clicked, time to perform.

David Leslie Johnson: When I first started writing the script, it was sort of one of those things that you can fall into with the evil child is how are all these adults being outsmarted by this child? I wanted to go into it thinking she’s just really that smart. She’s Hannibal Lector smart. She walks into a room and sizes everybody up and she figures out ‘ok, I know what your weakness is and what your weakness is’ and I don’t want anybody looking at me. I want you looking at her. And being mad at each other so that I can do what I want to do. That was the idea.

On the appeal to this story and the character arch’s?

Susan Downey: It was very much in the writing. It was very much in the script that we had originally received and then continued to work on & develop. The characters that we got from the original material in terms of Kate’s backstory and John’s backstory or for the little girl – just everyone, there was such a level of consideration that you often see more in dramas then in genre pictures, so we were fortunate to be able to have that as a starting point and to continue to develop it. Which then when we brought Jaume on, that’s what really appealed to him. He’s one of these director’s that grew up on the great horror movies of the 70’s, the ones we always reference in our development meetings that we hope to achieve and you never do. Or you ya know, you keep looking for that. He continued forward with what the script already brought to the table and it allowed us to get actors excited & involved who furthered that and continue to elevate the material.

Vera Farmiga: For me, when I consider a script there’s always a sense of wanting to defend the character and I had that with Kate. The appeal of the script for me was trying to understand miscarriage grief and at a time when I was desperately trying to get pregnant and wanting to be a mother. So there were issues in there that intrigued me about it. I spent a lot of time on websites for women who’ve gone through 3 trimesters and then suffered miscarriages and I was completely moved by it. The shock, it’s an intense grief and the recovery from it. The body heals before the soul does, so I saw that in my character and wanted to explore that.

Peter Sarsgaard: Well, I immediately felt very comfortable around Vera. There’s usually a ‘getting to know you’ awkwardness. But from the first day, when she busted her lip we were fine. It was also the only accident I remember happening on the film before cameras rolled.

Vera Farmiga: I wailed into Jaume and cracked my nose.

Peter Sarsgaard: And got a bloody nose! With playing these characters – you feel them out and they’re from your own life and they’re from what you’re sensing coming from that place, and it’s fairly subtle, so it’s those kind of things that just happen.

Vera Farmiga: We have a chemistry and we’ve known each other for 10 years. We have the same manager for a decade.

Peter Sarsgaard: We didn’t go back and write the story of our lives together, no. But the alcoholism, we talked about that stuff.

Vera Farmiga: Sure, this is a highly dysfunctional relationship that they have. I think how she first deals with the shame and pain and guilt and bereavement is to turn to alcohol. This is a man who just puts bandages on these bullet holes, he doesn’t really deal with things in this relationship and the grief is really what drives her to drink. She spends the whole film recovering from that. She feels tremendous guilt for her daughter.

How does ORPHAN compare to other “evil child” movies?

Vera Farmiga: I did something similar, but not many people saw JOSHUA. I had a great time with Sam Rockwell and the only really similar thing is that there’s a mother in distress, but I really don’t feel that my career’s in danger of being pigeonholed. And the story was radically different for me. I look at the character and what her trip is and I found this really complex. It’s a complex grief, trying to get over a miscarriage, and the dysfunction of this family. I have to say, what really got me, the secret of the film, I had never read anything like that before and I wanted to be a part of that but I wanted to make sure that whomever would be a part of that as well could make it work. As soon as Peter’s name was brought into the mix, I said ‘I’m in’. We’d been trying to find things to work on over the course of a few years.

David Leslie Johnson: Even when the BAD SEED was made, it was a taboo subject. At the end of THE BAD SEED, they have to break the 4th wall and say “Oh look here’s the actress, she wasn’t really bad and she didn’t really die.” (Laughs) It’s such a bizarre ending! I don’t remember ever seeing a movie like that where they actually had to say “its ok everyone, the little girl’s fine.” So it was definitely I think more taboo then and I think that was sort of – it sort of broke a barrier of what you could or couldn’t do certainly. But I think that the idea of children being scary has always been there. Because there’s something very primal about the need to protect children, so when you turn that on its head and you make the children, the child the bad guy, it’s violating everything that you feel. They are meant to be innocent. And there’s another aspect to it, and I don’t know if this is real or not, but there’s obviously a need to nurture kids and protect kids, but on some level, I wonder, kids also are reminders of our own mortality in a way. Ultimately your child kind of looks like you, grows up and acts like you and ultimately is here to replace you. I don’t know if maybe that’s one of the reasons that it persists as a horror sub genre, maybe.

Jaume Collet-Serra: The idea is for people to see the movie and have them think they know what this movie is going to be like, but it’s not. So, right now with the poster and the trailer, a lot of people are feeling like they’ve already seen this kind of a movie, but I don’t think that’s true. So, hopefully the movie will have an opportunity to grow with word of mouth.

Isabelle Fuhrman: This is an evil character, and most evil characters are male. Not many evil characters are female. There’s THE GOOD SON, THE OMEN. There was THE EXORCIST but I never saw that movie and I probably never will because I’m freaked out by the head spinning around! (Laughs)

A journalist asks insensitively if Isabelle, now 12 is ready for “America to hate her”?

Isabelle Fuhrman: (Pause) I’m totally different then Esther, and if America hates me then I’ve done my job! I’m supposed to make everybody hate me, but at the same time, I hope they feel sorry for her, but at the same time think ‘Whoa I feel sorry for her, but she’s so mean!’

On what’s next for producers Joel Silver and Susan Downey & Joel’s appreciation for comic book properties?

Joel Silver: LOBO (based on the DC Comic character) is the one I’m really excited about doing one day, hopefully soon. I’ve always loved graphic novels. We bought WATCHMEN and V FOR VENDETTA in the late 80’s. I lost WATCHMEN over the years, I wish I hadn’t but I’ve always been interested in graphic novels. When I read WATCHMEN, it changed my view of so many things, it was the first time I read a graphic novel really like that. So, look we made RICHIE RICH before so I’ve been involved with comic book stories for a long time. PREDATOR might as well have been a graphic novel. Obviously it wasn’t but it read like one.

Joel Silver: With WATCHMEN, Look – I love Zack Snyder and I love his work and I think he’s very talented, but the script that we developed was I think better then the movie they made. I thought there were some really good ideas we came up with. I know he stayed very close to the original material, but he made some changes anyways. I think it could’ve been a more satisfying movie. But you make the best movie you can. I think Zack made a great movie though & I don’t want to minimize what he did, but at the end of the day it was more tuned to just to the big fanatics of WATCHMEN as opposed to a broader audience that didn’t know the original comic book. As far as LOBO, we’ve got a script for LOBO we like. And when any of you see AVATAR, the technology is genius. It’s fantastic. So it’s time. I think it’s structured now as a PG-13 movie, but I love it. I want to make a good LOBO movie and it’s a great character.

Susan Downey: We all have high hopes for SHERLOCK HOLMES, that it will be a big fun action version of it and I actually think we got there. It maintains the integrity of people whom are SHERLOCK HOLMES fans. It’s smart, there’s a great history at the core. I think Robert Downey Jr captured the essence of Sherlock. I think Jude Law is going to surprise people in his portrayal of Watson. I don’t think we’ve seen Jude do something in my opinion that’s as fresh and solid as this performance. He’s really, really great. Rachel McAdams adds a wonderful splash as Irene Adler and so I think we’re going to satiate the people who are old Sherlock fans and see that we’re doing it right, and for the next generation who hasn’t really read those stories, I think they’re just going to enjoy the ride.

And The Title Of George A. Romero's New Zombie Film Is...

GEORGE A. ROMERO'S SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD! Sounds good to me!

Better yet, it's set to have it's world premier at the Toronto International Film Festival this September!

Here are some pics to whet your appetites. There's more located at the link above.

And here's the synopsis found on TIFF's website...

"In a world where the dead rise to menace the living, rogue soldier Crocket (Alan Van Sprang) leads a band of military dropouts to refuge from the endless chaos. As they search for a place " where the shit won ’ t get you, " they meet banished patriarch Patrick O ’ Flynn (played with zeal by Kenneth Welsh), who promises a new Eden on the fishing and ranching outpost Plum Island. The men arrive, only to find themselves caught in an age-old battle between O ’ Flynn ’ s family and rival clan the Muldoons. It turns out that Patrick was expelled from the isle for believing that the only good zombie is a dead zombie, while the Muldoons think it ’ s wrong to dispatch afflicted loved ones, attempting to look after their undead kinfolk until a cure is found. But their bid for stability on the homestead has turned perverse: the undead are chained inside their homes, pretending to live normal lives – and the consequences are bloody. A desperate struggle for survival will determine whether the living and the dead can coexist.

Such apocalyptic themes have long haunted George A. Romero, much to the delight of his legions of fans. He now follows Crocket, a minor character from his last film, Diary of the Dead, to present a new doomsday scenario. In that film, Crocket made a brief appearance with his militia to appropriate the heroes ’ supplies at gunpoint. For Crocket ’ s subsequent journey, Romero does something that most horror directors have forgotten in recent years – he uses the genre to address societal issues. As a socially conscious filmmaker, Romero creates a world in which he can wrestle with the human condition while simultaneously finding new and creative ways to exterminate lurching flesh eaters.

George A. Romero ’ s Survival of the Dead is also a sharp subversion of the western. It can be seen as a reflection of William Wyler ’ s The Big Country, in which stubborn clans feuded as larger troubles raged. We needn ’ t look further than today ’ s news headlines to see examples of such fracture and to understand how it prevents more significant problems from being solved.

Fear not, Romero is still determined to give you gruesome and macabre thrills, but will also serve up a bloody little parable on the side. So who are you going to side with, the living or the dead?"

Well color me officially EXCITED! While opinions regarding DIARY OF THE DEAD (which I liked a lot) seems to have polarized fans, I have faith in Uncle George. Judging from that hastily yanked promo footage a few months ago and the description above, it sounds like SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD could be Romero's next great American zombie film. I'm sure I'm going to catch all kinds of crap for that last statement and frankly I don't care, haters to the left.

No word yet regarding an official release, but we'll keep you posted!

Monique Parent (“Play Time”), Elske McCain (“Jessicka Rabid”), Ricardo Gray (“Easter Bunny Kill! Kill!”) and Trista Robinson are set to star in the Velvet Hammer Films/ArsonCuff Entertainment production of “Breath of Hate.”

Directed by Sean Cain (“Silent Night, Zombie Night”) and starring Ezra Buzzington (“Halloween 2”), “Breath” centers around a young woman in the escort business, who on her last job is confronted by a trio of escaped mental patients looking to change the world; one victim at a time.

"I like a part that scares me. If my first instinctive reaction is, ‘I can't DO that’, that's when I know it’s the right part for me." Parent says. "Selma forces me to look into the darkest places that I have and that scares the crap out of me. Scared shitless is a good place to work from."

“Playing Hailey is like a vacation for me.” states McCain tapped as the laid back escort. “Unlike my film, ‘Jessicka Rabid’ I don’t get locked in a cage or have to kill anyone!” Gray and Robinson round out the cast as the maniacal dinosaur loving Cleb and underage Lolita-like Tabbi.

“Breath” begins filming in late summer. This is the second production out of Wes Laurie’s ArsonCuff Entertainment and Sean Cain’s Velvet Hammer Films who are currently finishing post-production on “Silent Night, Zombie Night.”

Full Press Release For Rob Zombie's THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO!

UNDEAD NAZIS, HORNY ROBOTS AND STRIPPERS GET ANIMATED ON DVD! Rob Zombie Presents THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO, Hitting the Mat on DVD and Blu-ray™ September 22, 2009

Anchor Bay Entertainment will release THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO, the first full-length animated feature from Director/Writer Rob Zombie (The Devil’s Rejects and 2009’s Halloween), on DVD and Blu-ray™ on September 22, 2009. A longtime pet project of Zombie (he based it on his comic book), THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO, is an ultra-hip, wickedly funny fantasy that’s a colorful blend of Fritz the Cat, “Scooby-Doo,” “Ren and Stimpy,” and Santo wrestling flicks. El Superbeasto is “Adults Only” animation available on DVD for an SRP of $19.97 and Blu-ray™ for $34.98.

THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO is the twisted tale of El Superbeasto (voiced by Tom Papa), a former world class masked wrestler with super human strength, who now finds himself in the very ordinary capacity as producer/director/star of BeastoWorld Enterprises. But when he can, Beasto spends time fighting evil along with his with his super-sexy sister, Suzi X (Sheri Moon Zombie), in the spooky Monsterland. Our hefty hero faces his biggest battle when he struggles to stop the unholy marriage of foul-mouthed stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson) and the diabolical Dr. Satan (Paul Giamatti). Will all hell break loose or will our man save the day? The answer can only be found in The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, a depraved adventure with filthy comedy, ultra-violence, and some bad-ass theme songs!

Along with the distinct voice work of Dawson, Giamatti, Moon Zombie, and Papa, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto also features many other instantly recognizable performers including Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Daniel Roebuck, Harland Williams, Cassandra Peterson, Clint Howard, Dee Wallace, Rob Paulsen, Tura Satana, and Danny Trejo.

With Rob Zombie, a cast of fan favorites, and original songs by Hard ‘n Phirm; The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is a trash culture wild ride that’s a soon-to-be cult classic.

UPDATE: Are The Right Subtitles On LET THE RIGHT ONE IN Yet?!

Several months back, we had posted an article with a side-by-side comparison of an early screener of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN along with the recently released DVD/Blu-Ray version from Magnolia Pictures. We were shocked to discover such a discrepancy in the subtitles from version to version.

While we're sure this kind of loss in translation happens all the time with foreign films, it seemed baffling as to why a film that had been playing for months in limited theatrical release with accurate subtitles (to critical praise) would suddenly sport a completely different translation for the home video release. (Especially considering the screener copies sent out to reviewers all had the original translations) We theorized that possibly someone in Magnolia's home video department just thought it'd be cheaper to not pay the original translater (credited to Ingrid Eng) and just have someone else redo them. (Just a theory.)

Naturally, the issue caused quite an uproar amongst fellow critics, fans and consumers that were looking forward to seeing this highly praised cult-classic, only to get an inferior version of it. Magnolia never issued an "official" statement addressing the issue, but spoke to Digital Bits and informed them that new copies of the feature will be issues with "Subtitles English (Theatrical)" listed on the back. No word as to when this was going to happen. Nor were there to be any refunds for the original discs.

It'd been months since we'd heard ANY thing. The only thing I heard (and can confirm) is that the version of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN that is currently streaming on Netflix Watch Instantly IS in fact the theatrical version with the correct subtitles.

Regardless, I had to follow up with Magnolia on the actual DVD/Blu-Ray release. I was nervous that maybe Magnolia decided to completely ignore this issue, citing it as merely the cries of "a few band-wagon mentality bloggers." (Thanks for the actual quote, sales exec)

I wrote directly to Magnolia's video department to see what the status of the new re-issued LET THE RIGHT ONE IN DVD's was. Here's the reply I received from Melissa Romley:

"At this time there is nothing new to update you with.  The original theatrical subtitles will be made available as an additional English language subtitle option on future manufacturing runs."

Seemed pretty vague.... and disappointing.

Yet, several fans wrote me to inform me that they HAVE found NEW re-issues of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN at their local TARGET stores. Here's what to look for in insuring you get the RIGHT subtitles:

The good news is... they are out there. You just have to really look for them. And as of right now, TARGET's a good bet. I have yet to hear or see of any Blu-Ray versions with the appropriate subtitles, so please, if you find the Blu-Ray or more stores that have them, comment below so that fellow appreciators of this movie can own the version we saw in theaters.

Many thanks to the people that sent the above screengrabs. And for everyone interested in helping with this on-going matter. I'm sure director Tomas Alfredson would appreciate your efforts.

UPDATED: 3 Posters For THE COLLECTOR!

3 theatrical one sheet posters have surfaced on-line for Marcus Dunstan's directorial debut THE COLLECTOR, which hits theaters on July 31st! The first comes courtesy of FANGORIA, the second from FearNET. Check 'em out below!

Here's one more that just popped up on MTV's site!

The project, produced by Fortress Features’ Brett Forbes and Patrick Rizzotti and Imaginarium Entertainment Group’s Julie Richardson, stars Josh Stewart (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Criminal Minds), Daniella Alonso (Friday Night Lights, The Hills Have Eyes 2), Michael Reilly Burke (Lincoln Heights, 24), Andrea Roth (Rescue Me, War), Madeline Zima (Californication, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle), Karley Scott-Collins (Pulse 2, The Class), Robert Wisdom (The Wire, The Forgotten) and Juan Fernandez (The Lost City, A Man Apart).

THE COLLECTOR follows the story of handyman and ex-con Arkin, who aims to repay a debt to his ex-wife by robbing his new employer’s country home. Unfortunately for Arkin, a far worse enemy has already laid claim to the property – and the family. As the seconds tick down to midnight, Arkin becomes a reluctant hero trapped by a masked “Collector” in a maze of lethal invention – the Spanish Inquisition as imagined by Rube Goldberg – while trying to rescue the very family he came to rob.

Dunstan and Melton, who came into the national spotlight for their winning screenplay FEAST on Project Greenlight’s third season, have been shepherding the Saw franchise for the past three installments, having written SAW IV, SAW V and the upcoming SAW VI.

“Marcus and Patrick have come up with a unique twist on the home invasion thriller that we think will have people gripping their seats,” said Liddell. “With its stylized blend of action and horror, the movie delivers on every level.”

“In a summer boasting fist-fighting robots and 3-D floating homes, Mickey and his team are more than up to the challenge of delivering an adult horror-thriller to moviegoers seeking a shock to the system,” added Dunstan and Melton. “We're beyond lucky to have such a passionate force behind a film we can't wait to unleash.”

The film will be released through Freestyle Releasing, whom Liddell previously partnered with on The Haunting of Molly Hartley. Liddell was repped in the deal by Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.

Paul Solet's GRACE On DVD/Blu-Ray On September 15th!

Anchor Bay Entertainment has issued the official press release for Paul Solet's debut feature GRACE, which hits both DVD & Blu-Ray on September 15th. The disc promises to be loaded with special features! Check out the full release and listing below!

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS PAUL SOLET’S GRACE ON DVD AND BLU-RAY, A Genre Sensation Arrives September 15th Swaddled With Bonus Features!

An absolute sensation at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival – where two people fainted during the film’s premiere – and a runaway hit on the international film festival circuit, Paul Solet’s GRACE will bow September 15, 2009 on DVD and Blu-ray™. GRACE is an unforgettable emotional and psychological journey into terror, as a young woman (Jordan Ladd, Cabin Fever, Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof) is forced to make the ultimate maternal sacrifice when the stillborn child she carried to term returns to life with a horrifying appetite. SRP is $26.97 for the DVD, and $34.97 for the Blu-ray™. Grace is produced by Ingo Volkhammer, Cory Neal, Adam Green and Kevin DeWalt. Neal and Green are the writing/directing/producing team behind the contemporary cult classics Hatchet and Spiral.

After years of trying to conceive, Madeline (Ladd) and Michael Matheson (Stephen Park, Scary Movie 3, The Pink Panther) are finally about to become parents. But with only weeks to go before delivery, an accident leaves both Michael and the unborn child dead. Devastated, Madeline decides to carry the child to term and deliver naturally. What seemed like madness becomes a miracle when, after delivering a dead child, Madeline finds her baby is indeed alive…and hungry. She soon discovers that her baby – now named Grace – thirsts for something more than mother’s milk, and Madeline is determined to feed her child, no matter the consequences. With nowhere to turn, Madeline must make a mother’s ultimate decision: What will she sacrifice to keep her child alive?

GRACE has wowed – and terrified – audiences all over the world. In addition to Sundance, the film was an official selection at the South by Southwest Festival, the AFI Dallas Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, as well as the upcoming Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia, Spain, Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival and Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival. Other festival screenings include Portugal’s Fantasporto Festival, Athens Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival and Scotland’s Film Four Frightfest. In February, Grace was awarded the Prix Du Jury Award at the Gerardmer Festival Du Fantastique 2009 in France.

Hailed as “downright chilling” by Variety, and “… a blood-soaked piece of social commentary” by MSN, Grace has emerged among critics as nothing short of a genre phenomenon. Cinematical wrote: “First-time writer-director Paul Solet…proves himself adept both as a visual storyteller, and as a guy who can make you crap your pants,” while EOnline bluntly stated: “Let this be a warning: View at your own risk.”

GRACE on DVD and Blu-ray cradles a bundle of bonus features charting the film’s conception, execution and delivery:

- Audio commentary with writer/director Paul Solet, producer Adam Green and director of photography Zoran Popovic
- Audio commentary with writer/director Paul Solet and actor Jordan Ladd (Blu-ray™ exclusive)
- Grace: Conception – charting the film’s origins;
- Grace: Family – an in-depth look at the cast of characters;
- Her Mother’s Eyes: The Look of Grace – designing the unique visuals
- Grace: Delivered – overcoming challenges during principal photography

GRACE was written and directed by Paul Solet, and produced by Ingo Vollkammer, Cory Neal, Adam Green and Kevin DeWalt. Scott Einbinder and Simon Edery are Executive Producers. Zoran Popovic was Director of Photography and Martina Buckley was Production Designer. The film is an Indigomotion release of an ArieScope Pictures Production in association with Dark Eye Entertainment, and will be distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment.
