UPDATE: Are The Right Subtitles On LET THE RIGHT ONE IN Yet?!

Several months back, we had posted an article with a side-by-side comparison of an early screener of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN along with the recently released DVD/Blu-Ray version from Magnolia Pictures. We were shocked to discover such a discrepancy in the subtitles from version to version.

While we're sure this kind of loss in translation happens all the time with foreign films, it seemed baffling as to why a film that had been playing for months in limited theatrical release with accurate subtitles (to critical praise) would suddenly sport a completely different translation for the home video release. (Especially considering the screener copies sent out to reviewers all had the original translations) We theorized that possibly someone in Magnolia's home video department just thought it'd be cheaper to not pay the original translater (credited to Ingrid Eng) and just have someone else redo them. (Just a theory.)

Naturally, the issue caused quite an uproar amongst fellow critics, fans and consumers that were looking forward to seeing this highly praised cult-classic, only to get an inferior version of it. Magnolia never issued an "official" statement addressing the issue, but spoke to Digital Bits and informed them that new copies of the feature will be issues with "Subtitles English (Theatrical)" listed on the back. No word as to when this was going to happen. Nor were there to be any refunds for the original discs.

It'd been months since we'd heard ANY thing. The only thing I heard (and can confirm) is that the version of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN that is currently streaming on Netflix Watch Instantly IS in fact the theatrical version with the correct subtitles.

Regardless, I had to follow up with Magnolia on the actual DVD/Blu-Ray release. I was nervous that maybe Magnolia decided to completely ignore this issue, citing it as merely the cries of "a few band-wagon mentality bloggers." (Thanks for the actual quote, sales exec)

I wrote directly to Magnolia's video department to see what the status of the new re-issued LET THE RIGHT ONE IN DVD's was. Here's the reply I received from Melissa Romley:

"At this time there is nothing new to update you with.  The original theatrical subtitles will be made available as an additional English language subtitle option on future manufacturing runs."

Seemed pretty vague.... and disappointing.

Yet, several fans wrote me to inform me that they HAVE found NEW re-issues of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN at their local TARGET stores. Here's what to look for in insuring you get the RIGHT subtitles:

The good news is... they are out there. You just have to really look for them. And as of right now, TARGET's a good bet. I have yet to hear or see of any Blu-Ray versions with the appropriate subtitles, so please, if you find the Blu-Ray or more stores that have them, comment below so that fellow appreciators of this movie can own the version we saw in theaters.

Many thanks to the people that sent the above screengrabs. And for everyone interested in helping with this on-going matter. I'm sure director Tomas Alfredson would appreciate your efforts.

UPDATED: 3 Posters For THE COLLECTOR!

3 theatrical one sheet posters have surfaced on-line for Marcus Dunstan's directorial debut THE COLLECTOR, which hits theaters on July 31st! The first comes courtesy of FANGORIA, the second from FearNET. Check 'em out below!

Here's one more that just popped up on MTV's site!

The project, produced by Fortress Features’ Brett Forbes and Patrick Rizzotti and Imaginarium Entertainment Group’s Julie Richardson, stars Josh Stewart (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Criminal Minds), Daniella Alonso (Friday Night Lights, The Hills Have Eyes 2), Michael Reilly Burke (Lincoln Heights, 24), Andrea Roth (Rescue Me, War), Madeline Zima (Californication, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle), Karley Scott-Collins (Pulse 2, The Class), Robert Wisdom (The Wire, The Forgotten) and Juan Fernandez (The Lost City, A Man Apart).

THE COLLECTOR follows the story of handyman and ex-con Arkin, who aims to repay a debt to his ex-wife by robbing his new employer’s country home. Unfortunately for Arkin, a far worse enemy has already laid claim to the property – and the family. As the seconds tick down to midnight, Arkin becomes a reluctant hero trapped by a masked “Collector” in a maze of lethal invention – the Spanish Inquisition as imagined by Rube Goldberg – while trying to rescue the very family he came to rob.

Dunstan and Melton, who came into the national spotlight for their winning screenplay FEAST on Project Greenlight’s third season, have been shepherding the Saw franchise for the past three installments, having written SAW IV, SAW V and the upcoming SAW VI.

“Marcus and Patrick have come up with a unique twist on the home invasion thriller that we think will have people gripping their seats,” said Liddell. “With its stylized blend of action and horror, the movie delivers on every level.”

“In a summer boasting fist-fighting robots and 3-D floating homes, Mickey and his team are more than up to the challenge of delivering an adult horror-thriller to moviegoers seeking a shock to the system,” added Dunstan and Melton. “We're beyond lucky to have such a passionate force behind a film we can't wait to unleash.”

The film will be released through Freestyle Releasing, whom Liddell previously partnered with on The Haunting of Molly Hartley. Liddell was repped in the deal by Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.

Paul Solet's GRACE On DVD/Blu-Ray On September 15th!

Anchor Bay Entertainment has issued the official press release for Paul Solet's debut feature GRACE, which hits both DVD & Blu-Ray on September 15th. The disc promises to be loaded with special features! Check out the full release and listing below!

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS PAUL SOLET’S GRACE ON DVD AND BLU-RAY, A Genre Sensation Arrives September 15th Swaddled With Bonus Features!

An absolute sensation at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival – where two people fainted during the film’s premiere – and a runaway hit on the international film festival circuit, Paul Solet’s GRACE will bow September 15, 2009 on DVD and Blu-ray™. GRACE is an unforgettable emotional and psychological journey into terror, as a young woman (Jordan Ladd, Cabin Fever, Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof) is forced to make the ultimate maternal sacrifice when the stillborn child she carried to term returns to life with a horrifying appetite. SRP is $26.97 for the DVD, and $34.97 for the Blu-ray™. Grace is produced by Ingo Volkhammer, Cory Neal, Adam Green and Kevin DeWalt. Neal and Green are the writing/directing/producing team behind the contemporary cult classics Hatchet and Spiral.

After years of trying to conceive, Madeline (Ladd) and Michael Matheson (Stephen Park, Scary Movie 3, The Pink Panther) are finally about to become parents. But with only weeks to go before delivery, an accident leaves both Michael and the unborn child dead. Devastated, Madeline decides to carry the child to term and deliver naturally. What seemed like madness becomes a miracle when, after delivering a dead child, Madeline finds her baby is indeed alive…and hungry. She soon discovers that her baby – now named Grace – thirsts for something more than mother’s milk, and Madeline is determined to feed her child, no matter the consequences. With nowhere to turn, Madeline must make a mother’s ultimate decision: What will she sacrifice to keep her child alive?

GRACE has wowed – and terrified – audiences all over the world. In addition to Sundance, the film was an official selection at the South by Southwest Festival, the AFI Dallas Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, as well as the upcoming Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia, Spain, Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival and Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival. Other festival screenings include Portugal’s Fantasporto Festival, Athens Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival and Scotland’s Film Four Frightfest. In February, Grace was awarded the Prix Du Jury Award at the Gerardmer Festival Du Fantastique 2009 in France.

Hailed as “downright chilling” by Variety, and “… a blood-soaked piece of social commentary” by MSN, Grace has emerged among critics as nothing short of a genre phenomenon. Cinematical wrote: “First-time writer-director Paul Solet…proves himself adept both as a visual storyteller, and as a guy who can make you crap your pants,” while EOnline bluntly stated: “Let this be a warning: View at your own risk.”

GRACE on DVD and Blu-ray cradles a bundle of bonus features charting the film’s conception, execution and delivery:

- Audio commentary with writer/director Paul Solet, producer Adam Green and director of photography Zoran Popovic
- Audio commentary with writer/director Paul Solet and actor Jordan Ladd (Blu-ray™ exclusive)
- Grace: Conception – charting the film’s origins;
- Grace: Family – an in-depth look at the cast of characters;
- Her Mother’s Eyes: The Look of Grace – designing the unique visuals
- Grace: Delivered – overcoming challenges during principal photography
- Lullaby: Scoring Grace – creating the score and sound effects
- Grace at Sundance – becoming a festival sensation
- Theatrical Trailer

GRACE was written and directed by Paul Solet, and produced by Ingo Vollkammer, Cory Neal, Adam Green and Kevin DeWalt. Scott Einbinder and Simon Edery are Executive Producers. Zoran Popovic was Director of Photography and Martina Buckley was Production Designer. The film is an Indigomotion release of an ArieScope Pictures Production in association with Dark Eye Entertainment, and will be distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Magnet to Unleash THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to Ti West's critically acclaimed horror film THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL. A terrifically crafted homage to 80s horror masterpieces, the film premiered at Tribeca earlier this year and is sure to be an instant classic among genre fans, expertly building a mood of mounting dread to a shockingly terrifying climax. Director West, who was recently tapped by Hollywood to direct a high profile sequel, THE HAUNTING IN GEORGIA, has been regarded as something of a horror wunderkind since 2005’s THE ROOST, and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL unquestionably fulfills that promise.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s Senior Vice President Tom Quinn with Josh Braun of Submarine and Roger Kass of RingTheJing Entertainment, on behalf of MPI Media Group, Glass Eye PIX, RingTheJing Entertainment and Constructovision.

Magnet is excited to release THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL as part of the Magnolia/Magnet Ultra VOD program, which will offer home viewers a chance to see the film a month before it debuts theatrically. Magnet plans to launch the film on VOD late September 2009, with a theatrical release timed to Halloween.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL stars the sexy Jocelin Donahue stars as college student Samantha Hughes who takes a babysitting job in a remote mansion with her good friend Megan (indie favorite Greta Gerwig). She’s desperate for money and the pay is good, but something feels wrong, and Samantha quickly realizes that the girls are trapped. As a lunar eclipse darkens the night sky, she realizes that her employers—cult favorites Tom Noonan (MANHUNTER) and Mary Woronov (ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL)—have something truly terrifying in store for them. (Pfft... the film also stars THE SIGNAL's AJ Bowen!)

“Ti West is without a doubt one of the biggest talents in horror right now,” said Magnet/Magnolia SVP and Head of Acquisitions Tom Quinn . “THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL is smart, truly scary, and an awesome throwback to what made 80s horror great. This kind of film is what Magnet is all about.”

“Eamonn Bowles and Tom Quinn have been enthusiastic supporters of this film from the very beginning,” said Greg Newman of MPI Media Group. “We are pleased that the film has found a home with Magnet/Magnolia, a company that truly appreciates the genre and will give the film an expertly crafted release.”

"I'm psyched we found such a great home at Magnolia Pictures,” said director Ti West. “They continue to release interesting and progressive content and have one of the most impressive slates of independent film to date. They are the perfect fit for THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL."

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL was produced by Roger Kass, Josh Braun, Larry Fessenden and Peter Phok with Executive Producers Malik B Ali, Badie Ali, Hamza Ali and Greg Newman. Ti West wrote, directed and edited the film.

After years of nameless abuse of her family and neighbors, Jessicka has been reduced to something less than human. She's more of a family pet than she is a true member of the family. Jessicka is the tragic character brought up from her surroundings, and suddenly finds her opportunity for revenge.

The film had made its debut last year to critical acclaim, being noted not only for its avant-garde approach to the classic grindhouse rape/revenge film, but also for its performances. The film’s headliners are Elske McCain who portrays Jessicka with an understated, yet tortured performance. The film also stars cult film veteran, Trent Haaga (Terror Firmer/Bonnie & Clyde vs. Dracula) as Marley Hoffman, a petty criminal who is desperately trying to hold the remains of his family together while keeping his temper. Rounding out the cast are Jeff Sisson, who plays the film’s antagonist, and newcomer Cisiany Olivar as Abby.

JESSICKA features a haunting original score by composer Mario Salvucci. His music recalls the best of classic music scores, recalling Goblin and Ennio Morricone. The score also features a previously unreleased version of “Rabies is a Killer”, a song by Clive Jones of Black Widow and Agony Bag.

The DVD will have many special features including “The Ashtray”, a short film by Matthew Reel. Also included will be a behind the scenes featurette, Lloyd Kaufman’s outtakes, an unreleased music video for the song “Rabies is a Killer” by Agony Bag (1980) and trailers.

THIRST Poster & Trailer! The Latest From Park Chan-wook!

I'll watch anything by filmmaker Park Chan-wook, so count me excited for his latest THIRST. Below you can check out both the theatrical one-sheet poster and the trailer to Chan-wook's vampire tale.

THIRST is slated to release in select theaters July 31st.

THIRST official site: www.thirstmovie.com

Synopsis: A priest becomes a vampire…another man’s wife is coveted…a deadly seduction triggers murder. Thirst is the new film from director Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). Already a boxoffice smash in Korea , Thirst was honored with the Prix du Jury [Jury Prize] at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival.

Continuing his explorations of human existence in extreme circumstances, the director spins a tale that he conceived and then developed over several years with co-screenwriter Chung Seo-kyung.

Sang-hyun (played by top Korean star Song Kang-ho, of The Host) is a priest who cherishes life; so much so, that he selflessly volunteers for a secret vaccine development project meant to eradicate a deadly virus. But the virus takes the priest, and a blood transfusion is urgently ordered up for him. The blood he receives is infected, so Sang-hyun lives – but now exists as a vampire. Struggling with his newfound carnal desire for blood, Sang-hyun’s faith is further strained when a childhood friend’s wife, Tae-ju (Kim Ok-vin), comes to him asking for his help in escaping her life. Sang-hyun soon plunges into a world of sensual pleasures, finding himself on intimate terms with the Seven Deadly Sins.

Official GODKILLER Trailer Debuts!

GODKILLER OFFICIAL TRAILER DEBUTS! - Trailer for 'illustrated film' starring Danielle Harris, Lance Henriksen, A.F.I.'s Davey Havok, Motion City Soundtrack's Justin Pierre -

Los Angeles, CA, June 9, 2009 - Halo-8 Entertainment has released the trailer for its upcoming 'illustrated film' GODKILLER, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Pizzolo, illustrated by Anna Muckcracker, animated by Brian Giberson, and starring Danielle Harris (upcoming "HALLOWEEN 2"), Lance Henriksen ("AVP: ALIENS VS PREDATOR"), Justin Pierre (singer of MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK), Tiffany Shepis ("NIGHT OF THE DEMONS"), Bill Moseley ("THE DEVIL'S REJECTS"), Nicki Clyne ("BATTLESTAR GALACTICA"), Katie Nisa ("THREAT"), Lydia Lunch ("HARDCORE"), and Davey Havok (singer of A.F.I.). The first episode of GODKILLER is currently slated for a limited theatrical release followed by DVD on September 29, 2009.

Godkiller - Official Trailer from Halo-8 Entertainment on Vimeo.

Halo-8 plans to release GODKILLER in an innovative, serialized style that brings the episodic nature of comic books to DVD.

"We have this crazy idea to release the movie in short-form, episodic DVDs like a comic book, and then collect them into one feature length DVD--like when a comic book mini-series is collected into a graphic novel," Pizzolo explains in the Godkiller.tv blog. "The plan right now is to screen GODKILLER at some upcoming theatrical events we have planned that will tie in a few of our upcoming releases (notably POP SKULL and IN A SPIRAL STATE), show it at some really cool festivals if we can coordinate the dates right, and then release the short-form DVDs on this schedule: Episode 1 on 9/29/09, Episode 2 on 11/24/09, Episode 3 on 1/26/10... the most important thing is for us to get it to the fans as quickly as possible."

GODKILLER is the epic story of a boy on a quest to save his dying sister. Based on the comic book Pizzolo created with Muckcracker, GODKILLER takes place in a dark-future after economic collapse, after nuclear holy war, and after Earth is colonized by alien races. Tommy and his kid sister Lucy live in an orphanage in one of the few remaining city-states, but Lucy is critically ill and desperately in need of a new heart. Tommy's odyssey to find a new heart for his sister begins when he follows an organ-stealing prostitute named Halfpipe out of the city-state and into the savage borderland known as Outer City. GODKILLER mixes unforgiving brutality, quantum physics, conspiracy theory, and secret history for an iconoclastic hero's journey like none before it.

About the GODKILLER 'illustrated film'
The 'illustrated film' Pizzolo, Muckcracker, and Giberson are creating for the adaption mixes elements of anime, radio drama, video games, and motion comics. Utilizing the original artwork from the comic book, the 'illustrated film' adds motion animation, visual effects, elaborate sound design, music, and voice-acting performances.

Pizzolo explained "when we decided to make an anime adaptation of the comic book, I couldn't see how a traditional animated approach would do justice to Anna's incredibly lush and detailed illustrations. It made perfect sense to adapt the medium to suit her art, rather than vice versa."

Ezra Buzzington Takes A 'BREATH OF HATE'!

BUZZINGTON TAKES A BREATH OF HATE

Actor & Director re-team for new horror film

LOS ANGELES — Velvet Hammer Films and ArsonCuff Entertainment have tapped Ezra Buzzington to play the lead in the upcoming, “BREATH OF HATE”. Last seen opposite Kiefer Sutherland in “Mirrors” and currently in Rob Zombie’s “H2”, Buzzington will collaborate, once again, with director Sean Cain (“Silent Night, Zombie Night”) in this Jack Ketchum-esque horror film.

The Wes Laurie penned script, “Breath” centers around a young woman in the escort business, who on her last job is confronted by a trio of escaped mental patients looking to change the world; one victim at a time. "I can't wait to wrap my guts around this guy." Buzzington says. "I get him. Man, do I get him. Every time I fucking drive in LA."

Buzzington and Cain’s last successful collaboration was on “Someone’s Knocking at the Door”, another horror film Cain produced and Buzzington starred alongside genre vets as Vernon “Commando” Wells and Lew “The Devil’s Rejects” Temple which recently had its European premiere at the prestigious Amsterdam’s Fantastic Film Festival.

“Breath” begins filming in late summer. This is the second production out of Wes Laurie’s ArsonCuff Entertainment and Sean Cain’s Velvet Hammer Films who are currently finishing post-production on “Silent Night, Zombie Night.”

Lost NIGHTBREED Footage Found! But... Will You Get To See It?

For years, fans have been asking Clive Barker if we'll ever get to see a "director's cut" of his underrated classic NIGHTBREED. It's long been thought that the deleted footage from his cut of the movie had been long lost. Now... it seems it's right within reach. And only your interest will help make it available!

Here's the short version - Clive's friend Mark Miller has been searching for the lost footage and had spoken to a studio exec who claims that he "can access the footage at any time" from storage with "good reason". When asking about the potential of getting the footage and putting out a proper NIGHTBREED DVD release, the studio said that it's "not even worth the cost of an upgrade to Blu-Ray".

Phil and Sarah (keepers of the Clive Barker website) have ALL the full details on a post on their site (HERE) with instructions on what YOU can do to help. Essentially, we have to show our interest and convince the studios that we WANT a NIGHTBREED "Director's Cut"!

FIRST LOOK REVIEW: PONTYPOOL!

Just added! Our staffer Adam Barnick just posted a FIRST LOOK REVIEW for the much talked about indie flick PONTYPOOL. Directed by Bruce McDonald from a script by Tony Burgess, PONTYPOOL stars Stephen McHattie (WATCHMEN, HISTORY OF VIOLENCE), Lisa Houle, Georgine Reilly, Hrant Alianak and Rick Roberts.

Synopsis: Pontypool tells the story of shock-jock radio D.J. Grant Mazzy. Mazzy has, once again, been kicked off the Big City airwaves and now the only job he can get is the early morning show at CLSY Radio in the small town of Pontypool which broadcasts from the basement of the small town's only church. What begins as another boring day of school bus cancellations due to yet another massive snow storm quickly becomes deadly. Bizarre reports start piling in of people developing strange speech patterns and committing horrendous acts of violence. But there's nothing coming in on the news wires. So...is this really happening? Before long, Grant and the small staff at CLSY find themselves trapped in the radio station as they discover that this insane behavior taking over the town is caused by a deadly virus that may be spreading as a direct result of their radio transmissions... Now they must shut up or die.

R.I.P. DON EDMONDS

We're terribly saddened to learn of the passing of filmmaker Don Edmonds. The actor-turned-director (and producer) was most well known to exploitation film fans for his ILSA movies, ILSA, SHE WOLF OF THE SS and ILSA, HAREM KEEPER OF THE OIL SHEIKS, as well as such features as WILD HONEY, TENDER LOVING CARE, BARE KNUCKLES, TERROR ON TOUR amongst other. He also directed the pilot to SILK STALKINGS and of course appeared alongside Dyanne Thorn (Ilsa herself), Sid Haig and Jack Hill in the 4th "exploitation breakfast" episode of AMERICA'S BAD KIDS. He will be missed...

Alex Winter Directing THE GATE 3D!

Several months back, we had heard reports that Alex Winter was attached to direct a 3D remake of cult favorite THE GATE. Shock Till You Drop is now confirming this from the man himself who recently attended a screening of FREAKED at the New Beverly Theater this past weekend. He told the audience there that he's currently in pre-production on the GATE update!

While most genre fans may recognize Winter in front of the camera in such films as THE LOST BOYS and BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE, Winter made the segue way into directing starting with his debut FREAKED and following it up with the highly underrated FEVER (starring Henry Thomas). Most recently, he's been directing episodes of the Cartoon Network's Ben 10.

The original THE GATE was directed by Tibor Takacs from a script by Michael Nankin and starred Stephen Dorff, Louis Tripp, Christa Denton and Carl Kraines.

Check out our vintage FRIGHT exclusive interview with the writer/director of the original THE GATE (and it's sequel) TIBOR TAKAS! (Click the frame to read it!)

THE RETURN OF LESLIE VERNON! Writer Talks BEHIND THE MASK 2!

BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON was one of the bigger breaths of fresh air the horror genre took in recent years; going on to be a cult favorite. BHM recently put the film at #70 in its top 100 horror films of all time, while Horror-Movies.ca just put the film in its “Top 10 most influential horror films of the last 10 years” list.

Blending horror and comedy, deconstructing slasher films as well as becoming one of the finest examples of the subgenre; mixing realism with melodrama... there aren’t many films that can cover these many bases and simply work. Vernon was a universal success at festivals and with critics, although criminally underseen during its limited theatrical release. Thanks to DVD, the next great slasher heavyweight has seen his hoped-for following grow in number month after month.

I checked in with Vernon writer David J. Stieve this week (who I’d interviewed for IOF in July of ’07 about Vernon and other upcoming projects) just to inquire what he’d been working on lately. Asking about a heist film DAYS LIKE THIS and a Christmas tale THE NIGHT BEFORE he’d been developing; he actually revealed that thanks to consistently healthy DVD sales there's been some “concrete interest in making a sequel to BEHIND THE MASK soon”. And though he couldn’t say who with, he did add “it's legitimate enough to get (director) Scott (Glosserman) and I working on the story and plotting it out.”

Stieve had touched on where he might have taken the narrative if he ever wrote a followup back in his Icons interview and I wondered if they had planned to keep that angle, with Leslie figuring out how to handle his initial notoriety and ‘sudden success’ while deconstructing sequel-based conventions about a killer returning after his initial headline-making massacre.

DJS: “There are components of what we aim to do that I expect will be similar, but back then I only had vague notions. Now Scotty and I are getting into specifics, and as you can imagine things have changed. Just as Scotty and I, even Nathan (Baesel) perhaps, have changed in our professional lives. One thing we can certainly touch on is the idea that the parallels to real life continue.”

One could have envisioned Leslie Vernon as any other aspiring artist debuting in a competitive field, which matched the debut filmmaking efforts of Glosserman and Stieve as well as its talented lead; addressing where Leslie would find himself post-murder spree looks to comment on where his creators have found themselves now. “Leslie's journey as a "craftsman" has had to be adjusted to the reality of what happened to his fledgling mythology after the events of the Harvest Moon Killings”, states David. “So, too, have our expectations as filmmakers in the wake of how things unfolded after the release of the film in real life.”

One aspect cerebral fans embraced in the first film’s storytelling was the blending of a documentary-world aesthetic and the film-world, depending on the point of view. While he didn’t mention if all the same documentary characters/crew would be involved or how this is depicted this time out, “I can tell you that there IS a way we're blending the documentary and cinematic lenses again. And there is also a manner in which Taylor (Angela Goethals) and Leslie are forced to cooperate with one another, although not necessarily on the best of terms. There's definitely a perverse love story that must be honored, but then again they did try pretty hard to kill each other. Not exactly a ‘kiss and make up’ situation. There's a sort of bigger, badder influence that's threatening everything Leslie's worked to accomplish, and Taylor may have her own agenda for ‘helping’ him. Or does she?”

David was quick to stress that a followup to Vernon would certainly not be a direct retread or something that has to be written simply because of DVD profits: “Scott and I are painfully aware of the sequel trap, of treading the same ground again with nothing more than a bigger budget. That's not what's going to happen. Things didn't go the way Leslie wanted them to, particularly in the reaction of the residents of Glen Echo. I can't give any more details than that, but suffice to say, we find Leslie a little perplexed that he ‘did everything right, everything went exactly according to plan!’ and yet the aftermath of his rampage is a right-turn derailment of what he was expecting. So he, being Leslie, regroups and plays the hand he's been dealt. How Taylor and the boys get involved is part of the unfolding of his efforts in that regard.

I'm VERY pleased that we've found what we feel is a progressive, organic, and rational way to make that happen. Again, the real world parallel is that our efforts as filmmakers also needed to be re-calibrated and adjusted to the reality of the industry. I feel we've found that signature blending of the two worlds at the story level. Albeit this time, the industry is going to take a few harder shots.”

Stieve adds Leslie this time around is “channeling Freddy a bit more this time, finding some frightening ways to express his sense of humor.”

While the narrative’s been mapped out and Glosserman and Stieve hope to make major announcements soon, he did mention they’ve welcomed the continuous feedback from fans online and on their sites; The Behind the Mask website, MySpace and Facebook pages are still maintained/visited by the film’s creators; fans can continue to discuss Leslie’s continuing reign of terror, one scythe-slash at a time.

We wrapped up our chat with Stieve once again determined, as is Leslie, to raise the bar on the nightmarish goings-on in Glen Echo. “When you think about it, Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy Krueger all had to pay their dues. It's not an instantaneous process, even in their world! So each of us, individually and collectively, have come to realize how much more work we need to do. We all accept it and are up to the task. We've learned our lessons, taken our lumps, and we're going to craft a better story for Leslie as a result. Leslie is redoubling his efforts to become the greatest slasher killer ever. He knows it's gonna be a longer race than he thought, and he's gearing up to win it. Woe to the ones who doubt him or get in his way!”

TBK: THE TOOLBOX MURDERS Teaser Trailer! With Jeffrey Combs!

Earlier this morning, we posted a story about the upcoming TOOLBOX MURDERS sequel. Now Dread Central have uncovered an official teaser trailer for TBK: THE TOOLBOX MURDERS with Jeffrey Combs! The film also Lance Henriksen, Red West and Brian Krause and was written & directed by Dean Jones. Watch it below and hit up the official website at: http://www.tbkmovie.com

Picking up directly after the events Tobe Hooper's 2003 version of The Toolbox Murders; TBK intensifies the terrifying exploration into one of Hollywood's most twisted and morbid serial killers in the annals of American history.

TOOLBOX MURDER Sequel Finally Coming?!

There have been rumors for years now about a proper follow-up to Tobe Hooper's remake of THE TOOLBOX MURDERS. Looks like it's finally a brewin'! An official website for TBK: THE TOOLBOX MURDERS (aka TOOLBOX MURDERS 2) is up and running and lists Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs, Red West and Brian Krause as part of the cast. Dean Jones, the FX artist on the first film is writing and directing.

The site has the following synopsis for the sequel: "Picking up directly after the events Tobe Hooper's 2003 version of The Toolbox Murders; TBK intensifies the terrifying exploration into one of Hollywood's most twisted and morbid serial killers in the annals of American history.

Survivors Nell and Stephen continue their night of Hell as they're rushed to the nearby Hollywood Memorial hospital. Meanwhile, next-generation , tech-savvy CSI detectives Cole and Barnes coordinate with a hard-nosed, LAPD criminal profiler McGavin to exhume TBK's modern day tomb and uncover its origins, leading toward a shocking revelation involving old Hollywood's seedy underground and one doctor's secret past.

TBK will shock, sicken, and thrill you while pushing every envelope imaginable as it leads you into the darkest recesses of what is to become one of the classic horror films of the millennium."

Jones told Bloody-Disgusting a few weeks back "This script is very powerful, provocative, and original and rises far above the last Toolbox, I work in a world where I create death on a daily basis and so with that in mind this script will have highest body count ever in the history of horror films. However, the story will not be gore for the sake of having gore...it has depth and style."

The first TOOLBOX MURDERS was directed by Tobe Hooper from a script by Adam Gierasch & Jace Anderson and starred Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Juliet Landau, Sara Downing & Sheri Moon Zombie. It was based on the original 1978 film of the same name. More on the sequel when we hear it!

SPOOKY DAN'S LATEST ICONS BLOG: "Can DREAD and THE HILLS RUN RED Fix Horror?"

Spooky Dan's back with his 2nd blog entry for ICONS OF FRIGHT! This week, he asks the question "Can DREAD and THE HILLS RUN RED Fix Horror?" He caught early screenings of both and both those films made quite an impression on Dan. Here's the intro to his latest blog entry:

"For the past few months it has seemed like horror films have taken a turn for the worse. Even the good films were just good, not great. The last couple horror films to really grab me were Let the Right One In and Martyrs. I had seen both of those films over a year ago, and while some others have come through the pipeline that I genuinely liked, nothing has really shaken me up much (not including Repo! of course). Quite frankly, there doesn’t seem to be much horror heading our way right now that I am super excited about either…Until this week!"

FIRST LOOK REVIEW: TELL TALE

NO FRICKING KIDDING-- "TELL TALE" TRIBECA PREMIERE CAUSES AUDIENCE MEMBER TO HAVE A HEART ATTACK! HOLY SH**!!!!!!! I just caught the premiere of the Tony and Ridley Scott produced TELL TALE at the Tribeca Film Fest and I’m still shaking. Both from the film--- and from what fucking happened during the screening. Holy shit, what a film. And I kid you not. It was so intense, about ten minutes from the end after one of the most traumatic sequences, some dude in the audience literally had a heart attack. For REAL. The film was paused for half an hour while the paramedics came and attended to the poor guy, who was taken out a stretcher. After the film came back on for yet another shocking ten minutes, I asked around and it seems that the gentlemen in question will be okay. (PRAYERS AND BLESSINGS FOR A FULL RECOVERY) I still can't believe this shit happened. But seriously, this film is THAT damn intense. Who would have thought the best in new horror was to be found at Tribeca ? After a rash of dumbed-down remakes like FRIDAY THE 13TH and unimaginative crap like THE UNBORN and THE UNINVITED, this is the real deal, a welcome and refreshing return to the high-end, brooding psychological dread of films such as Roman Polanksi’s REPULSION and THE TENANT, Adrian Lyne's JACOB’S LADDER, Alan Parker's ANGEL HEART, Christopher Nolan's MEMENTO or the collective works of David Fincher (THE GAME, PANIC ROOM, SEVEN and ZODIAC). Edgar Allen Poe by way of David Cronenberg, you might even say, and I would bet anything that director Michael Cuesta (who gave us L.I.E. and TV’s DEXTER) has definitely watched his share of Cronenberg ; for in mood, tone and character reality TELL TALE falls right in line with THE DEAD ZONE, THE BROOD and THE FLY.

I am amazed that nobody has ever sought to adapt Poe’s THE TELL-TALE HEART before. Of all the Vincent Price/Roger Corman Poe pics, not one tackled the story. Screenwriter Dave Callaham cleverly uses the basic elements of the classic short tale, but whereas the undying heart of Poe’s story lay beating in the murdered body of the protagonist’s victim beneath the floorboards under which he was buried, here that heart rests in the chest of single father Josh Lucas, recipient of a transplant from what turns out to be a murdered man whose dead spirit is bent on revenge. Just like the hands of the serial killer grafted onto the severed stubs of an unwitting pianist in the horror classic MAD LOVE, this relocated organ begins to take over Lucas in both body and mind, drawing him ever closer, and ever more violently, towards those responsible for the crime. Along the way there are some great supporting characters that add a level of humanity which really flesh out the piece and raise the stakes. There is Lucas’ young daughter who suffers from a degenerative bone disease (SO Cronenberg) that brings her in touch with Sara Connor herself, Lena Heady, playing a caring and (what else) sexy doctor that becomes the glue between father and daughter when their world begins to break apart as Lucas spirals more and more out of control. Heady is terrific, as is Lucas, who truly shines in his role, making us feel so deeply for his plight at the same time that we are frightened of the murderous monster he is becoming. Adding real spice to the mix is the always amazing Brian Cox, playing a cop whose character defies cliché when he goes from hunting Lucas to becoming his Svengali-like puppeteer.

Twists abound, nothing goes the way you think it will go, whether it be the plot or the frequent outburst of gruesome horror that abound. From the grisly opening credits depicting the bloody murder of the heart’s original owner to its graphic transplant into Lucas, director Cuesta does not shy away from the gore. But it’s done with a sense of poetry and craft that, coupled with the film’s breathtaking cinematography and Rhode Island locale make you both want to watch AND look away. All this adds up to an underlying tone of dread that I could not shake from the moment the film began to its melancholy finale. Truly channeling Poe at its core, this is a haunting piece of filmmaking. A real beauty. Again, films like DON’T LOOK NOW come to mind.

All of this is not to say that the film doesn't have a few drawbacks, such as some of the romantic relationships (e.g. hot doctors falling in love with sickly, broke-ass patients) and rather convenient detective work. There also could have been more villain character development for my taste. Regardless, for those looking for cerebral horror that truly approaches art, this is a rare treat. But not to worry, blood hounds. Without giving spoilers, suffice it to say there is a sequence near the climax that rivals the “Is it safe” dental drilling sequence from MARATHON MAN in terms of faint-inducing squirming. If not heart attack inducing as judged from the horrific situation tonight. (Again, I thank GOD that this audience member will be all right--- and again, prayers and blessings for a full recovery). A soon to be referenced classic sequence in the making for sure. Hats off to Tribeca for being the unlikely showcase for new directions in horror. May this film find the distribution and audience it deserves. It’ what HORROR movies are truly meant to be. Mr. Poe himself would be proud.

Submitted by JJ Butler aka LongIslandMan

TELL TALE synopsis: Terry (Josh Lucas) is a struggling, single father whose life is finally looking up after becoming the recent recipient of a successful heart transplant. With a new lease on life, Terry begins to find love again in the form of a beautiful English doctor (Lena Headey) who has been helping to care for his daughter and her rare degenerative disorder. However, after a strange series of events at the local hospital, Terry soon finds his heart beating to a very different drummer. Mysteriously, it begins to slowly take hold of him, eventually leading the young father on a frantic and harrowing search to find the donor's killer before he meets a similar fate.

GRACE - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

Friday evening, April 17th boasted the panel for the eagerly anticipated Anchor Bay release GRACE. ICONS Robg. moderated the panel with writer/director Paul Solet, producer Adam Green (HATCHET) and star Jordan Ladd. The FANGO audience was treated to a brand-new red-band trailer before the guests all took the stage.

Solet talked about the humble beginnings of the GRACE project, starting from the premiere of the short film version at the 2004 LA FANGO, which got the attention of Green who would go on to help shepherd the full length feature version. After briefly talking about the production in Regina, Canada, we were treated to a full scene from the movie, the heartbreaking "birthing" scene. If you're familiar with the original short film version, it's the scene that ends that short and ends the first act of the feature.

Jordan discussed the challenges of tackling the role of Madeline and explained how she spent a lot of time talking with friends who were in fact mother's to understand the bond between child and mother. Solet also admitted to being very open to female feedback all through the writing and re-writing process.

GRACE will be available later this year in a full loaded DVD, but after a few more festival screenings and a potential limited theatrical run. Later in the day, Solet signed promotional GRACE baby bottles at the Anchor Bay table. See full pictures below:

NIGHT OF THE DEMONS - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

One of the biggest highlights for the FANGORIA WEEKEND OF HORRORS was the sneak peek first look at the upcoming NIGHT OF THE DEMONS remake, which took place on Saturday, April 18th. On stage to talk about the film was director/co-writer Adam Gierasch, (from left to right) producer Greg McKay, actresses Bobbi Sue Luther, Shannon Elizabeth, Tiffany Shepis and co-writer Jace Anderson. (Monica Keena [far left] eventually joined the group half way through the panel.

Gierasch kicked off the panel serious, by trying to explain that the movie is actually a film about battling personal demons. "Ok, it's not. It's a movie about f***ing demons, OK?"

Everyone on stage then began talking a bit about the origins of the project, and their characters in the movie. Shannon Elizabeth couldn't remember the name of her character (Um, Angela? As in the lead of all the NIGHT OF THE DEMONS movies?), but had a great experience portraying the "bad girl" for a change. Tiffany Shepis promised that the pivotal role of "Door Girl Diana" would totally rock us.

The group then showed off 2 exclusive clips from the movie itself. The first featuring a demonized Michael Copon (as Dex) having sex with his girlfriend (Diora Baird) and in essense making her demonized once he ummm... parked it in the rear if you know what I mean. The second clip took place in an underground lair where Monica Keena, Edward Furlong and John Beach are surrounded by several demonized party-goers while attempting to escape the grounds.

The clips definitely made me excited for the movie itself. Cool looking demons? Hot chicks? Halloween party? Punk rock soundtrack? Demon anal sex? A confirmed Linnea Quigley cameo? I'm sold. It looks FUN as all hell. Pictures from the panel below!

LAID TO REST - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

Another one of the weekend's most anticipated panels was for LAID TO REST, which took place on Saturday April 18th on the main stage. Shock Till You Drop's Ryan Rotten moderated and the panel featured (from left to right) producer Chang Tseng, (Chrome Skull himself) Nick Principe, lead star Bobbi Sue Luther, Thomas Dekker, Anthony Fitzgerald, writer/director Robert Hall, Sean Whalen and 2 of the co-producers.

They showed off one of the film's most memorable death sequences involving Johnathon Schaech and his real life girlfriend Jana Kramer. (Definitely my favorite Chrome Skull kill from the movie) Nick Principe couldn't help but gush over what an honor it is to be featured on the front cover of FANGORIA magazine.

The group talked a bit about the casting process, as well as filming in Maryland and the overall production itself which was a complete team effort amongst friends that became family on this shoot. (You can watch the panel in it's entirety on FANGO's site right HERE!) In the meantime, check out the photos below!

THE HILLS RUN RED - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

One of my personal most anticipated panels for the weekend was the preview of THE HILLS RUN RED, which took place in the West Hall on Sunday, April 18th. The panel kicked off with a brand new exclusive red-band trailer for the film, and then guests from the movie took the stage. Joining us (from left to right) were Tad Hilgenbrink, director Dave Parker, producer Robert Burnett and star Janet Montgomery.

We talked about the origins of the project, which started as a low budget feature for Fever Dreams before ended up at Joel Silver's genre based production company Dark Castle, as well as the character design for the film's killer "Babyface", easily the coolest looking "slasher" to grace the screen in years. Tad explained the story of the film via his character's role in it. He plays Tyler, a documentary filmmaker obsessed with tracking down the long lost notorious genre flick "The Hills Run Red", which has long been missing and long rumored to be incomplete. While trekking the locations of the original film's shoot with his girlfriend & best friend, they discover that the film never stopped shooting and that it's killer, Babyface is still in those woods.

We also were treated to an exclusive scene from the film, which was technically a scene within the original Hills movie in which Babyface strings up a victim between 2 trees using rope and barb-wire.

All I can say is Babyface looks bad-ass! Loved all the footage we got to see during this panel. The cast & crew also talked a bit about filmming the movie in Bulgaria. Actress Montgomery actually shot HILLS RUN RED back to back with WRONG TURN 3 in Bulgaria. Lastly, Burnett did a trivia segment with the audience to give away some HILLS crew caps.

Overall, a great panel and a film we strongly recommend being on the look out for! Pictures below!

DARK HOUSE - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

Sunday afternoon, April 18th, the panel for DARK HOUSE kicked off the days festivities in the West Hall. We were treated to the first preview of the film and then joined on stage by actors Matt Cohen, Diane Salinger, writer/director Darin Scott, Jeffrey Combs, Meghan Ory, Bevin Prince and Scott Whyte.

Scott (who produced TALES FROM THE HOOD, STEPFATHER 2 & MENACE II SOCIETY) explained the film's origin to the crowd. "What we wanted to do was make a funhouse ride of horror. The story is about a massacre that took place in this house years ago where a bunch of children were killed by a very evil woman. Now, an entrepreneur who puts on haunted house attractions all over the country, he decides to exploit the history of the house by putting on a haunted attraction there. He hires a troupe of actors, one of whom, he doesn't realize, was present at the massacre. She asked to come back to the house and perform. So they all come and get trapped in the house. The house uses a holographic illusion system to project monsters. They have hundreds of monsters that they can make look real. What happens is a ghost takes over the system and makes all of the monsters real threats. And they start taking people apart one by one."

The actors were completely complimentary of each other on stage, and RE-ANIMATOR alumni Jeffrey Combs couldn't stop praising Scott as a director, which led the filmmaker to reach for his wallet and throw Combs a few bucks for his kind words. It was a motif that continued through out the panel for when anyone complimented someone else, that person would reach for their wallet.

Easily one of the most fun panels the entire weekend, we'll be on the look out for DARK HOUSE and keep you posted on it's release as soon as we hear it! Pictures below!

DOLPH LUNDGREN FILM FEST REPORT FROM THE NEW BEV!

It was Saturday evening, April 18th and several events were the buzz of the FANGORIA WEEKEND OF HORRORS. There was of course FANGO's own "vampire ball", a replacement to the usual ice cream social they throw every year. Or the LAID TO REST premiere at the Laemmmle's Grande. But your faithful ICONS staffers Robg., John Torrani and Adam Barnick already had their night's plans covered. DOLPH LUNDGREN FEST at the New Beverly! 5 Dolph Lundgren films, back to back on the big screen! Including I COME IN PEACE at midnight! There was no way in hell we were missing this!

Torrani and I had sadly missed the first feature RED SCORPION, but we got there half way through UNIVERSAL SOLDIER. While fun, nothing compared to the sheer audience excitement for the evening's next feature ROCKY IV! We cheered for Rocky, boo-ed for Drago and did shots of vodka (with B-D's Brian Collins) when Apollo died. The ending match felt like being at an actual boxing match. It felt like being teleported to 24 years earlier when ROCKY IV originally played in theaters!

Then came a pleasant surprise and highlight. The unrated director's cut of THE PUNISHER... with director Mark Goldblatt in attendence, showing off his original Australian print of the film with all the gore in tact! I appreciated THE PUNISHER far more seeing it on the big screen in the way it was originally intended. Goldblatt (who served as an editor on THE TERMINATOR films and COMMANDO) fielded questions from the audience after the screening. He regrets not putting the skull on THE PUNISHER's chest, but at the time, they didn't want to use a spandex suit and opted instead to put the infamous skull on the knives. He talked about the problems with the theatrical release and how this was actually the LA premiere of the film! As far as releasing this "director's cut" on DVD, someone had asked him about it and it's an issue of not being able to locate who owns the rights to do it. (Lionsgate, get on it! This version is far superior!)

Trailers in between the features including Dolph's latest COMMAND PERFORMANCE, where he plays a drummer in a rock band. It's DIE HARD at a rock concert. Seeing is believing, so check it out at his official website HERE! We also got the CAPTAIN AMERICA teaser (for the 1990 movie) and MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!

The evening ended with a print of DARK ANGEL, aka I COME IN PEACE. Oh yes, Dolph and Brian Benben fighting drugdealers from space! Hands down one of the most fun film fests I'd ever attended. Multiple kudos to Phil Blankenship and the New Bev for putting together a great event as an alternative to the FANGO show! Pictures below!

NEW TERMINAL HOTEL - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

On Saturday afternoon, April 18th, the West Hall panel room hosted a preview of the upcoming feature NEW TERMINAL HOTEL, and ICONS own Robg. moderated this panel. From the film, guests included writer/director BC Furtney, stars James Grabowski, Laura Leigh (who appeared in Furtney's FANGO BLOOD DRIVE short films), Ezra Buzzington, the always lovely Tiffany Shepis and Stephen Geoffreys.

Furtney kicked off the panel by debuting the first teaser trailer for NEW TERMINAL HOTEL. (Which you can now see on the filmmaker's official website HERE!)

As with most panels, we talked about the origins of the project and putting together the cast, most of which consisted of people that BC already had established relationships such as Leigh and Shepis. Getting Stephen Geoffreys was an honor for the filmmaker having been a huge fan of his genre work in FRIGHT NIGHT and 976-EVIL. At one point, Geoffreys talked about the surprising huge new fan base & revival of the vampire classic FRIGHT NIGHT.

In the film, Geoffreys plays Don Malek, a horror screenwriter whose sanity comes into question when he checks himself into the "new terminal hotel". Shepis plays his agent who eventually tracks him down in the hotel only to discover a body in his bathtub. From there, the other strange residents of the new terminal come into play and things aren't quite as they seem!

The funnest part of the panel was the on stage banter between Shepis and Buzzington, both jokesters & total trouble makers. They obviously had a lot of fun reflecting on the Pennsylvania shoot, which took place in a portion of an abandoned mental hospital. (!) Buzz talked a bit about his role in Rob Zombie's H2 (HALLOWEEN 2) and said he hopes his scene doesn't get cut out this time like it did in the first HALLOWEEN. Shepis talked about her next projects including the recently wrapped SICKLE and an upcoming film starring opposite screen legend Kirk Douglas. Geoffreys genre return feature SICK GIRL will be on DVD courtesy of Synapsis in August. Pictures below!

WALKING DISTANCE - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

The first panel to kick off the 2009 FANGORIA WEEKEND OF HORRORS was a special preview of WALKING DISTANCE, which took place Friday, April 17th. On hand were stars Adrienne King, Reggie Bannister, Denton Blane Everett, (former FANGO"Spooks Model") Shannon Lark, producer/star James Lamarr and writer/director Mel House.

The group had prepped a nice behind the scenes featurette to debut exclusively for the FANGO crowd, but technical difficulties wouldn't allow the disc to play! The trailer wouldn't play either, but thankfully, fans & attendee's were able to visit the WALKING DISTANCE table in the vendor's room all weekend and see both previews at the table.

House began by telling us the origins of this project, his 4th film and I confessed that even though I've seen 2 trailers and a behind the scenes featurette, I'm still not completely sure what this movie is about, which he took as a major compliment. (See 2 of those trailers HERE and HERE!)

Casting was pivotal, so we talked about getting genre faves such as Reggie Bannister (PHANTASM) and Adrienne King (FRIDAY THE 13TH), whose role in WALKING DISTANCE marks her first on screen appearance since FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2! In fact, her role Louis Strack was originally written for a male lead, but converted to suit the actress once she came on board. Bannister was cryptic about his character Joseph Webber but said he's a "sick bastard", which was a nice change of pace for the actor.

What sets apart WALKING DISTANCE is some of the wild FX and visuals evident from the trailers and behind the scenes, courtesy of FX artist Marcus Koch, who's work Adrienne compared to seeing Tom Savini work on the original FRIDAY THE 13TH.

Also interesting to note, King confessed she has yet to see the recent Platinum Dunes remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH, but she had met new Jason Voorhees Derek Mears for the first time the night prior to the convention and had nothing but nice things to say about the new actor portraying her former killer.

No release date is set yet, but look for potential festival screenings of WALKING DISTANCE later this year. And of course, we'll keep you posted when we hear something. Panel pictures below!

FADING OF THE CRIES - LA FANGO 2009 PANEL!

On Saturday, April 18th, the LA FANGORIA WEEKEND OF HORRORS kicked off it's panel sessions with a preview of the film FADING OF THE CRIES. ICONS own Robg. moderated the panel which consisted of director Brian Metcalf, Elaine Hendrix, acting legend Brad Dourif, Jessica Morris, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Mackenzie Rosman, Hallee Hirsh and Jordan Matthews. Coming from an FX background, Brian Metcalf chose to make FADING OF THE CRIES, an epic looking horror/fantasy hybrid his directorial debut. Metcalf introduced the trailer to the film, which most of the cast themselves on stage had yet to see.

After seeing the ambitious clip, we discussed the origins of the project with Metcalf and co-producer Thomas Ian Nicholas, finding the right cast and executing the special FX, which judging from the trailer was a combination of practical and CGI. (We also got to see a fair amount of cool sword fighting between Dourif's evil character Mathias and Jordan Matthews' Jacob)

Naturally, the audience has plenty of questions for genre alumni Brad Dourif, most of which stemmed his entire body of work both within and out of the genre. He talked a bit about his recent experiences shooting Rob Zombie's H2 (HALLOWEEN 2) and what it was like to reprise the role of Sheriff Brackett. "I had a lot more to do this time," tells us Dourif.

When asked about the CHILD'S PLAY remake, he joked that he didn't even know about it until the check out girl at the local supermarket mentioned it to him on line one day. He says that he spoke to writer/director Don Mancini and that he'd still like Brad to reprise his role as Chucky aka Charles Lee Ray.

Although the trailer was beautifully cut to the music of Sarah McLaughlan, Metcalf revealed he was directing a video with former NY based hardcore outfit HELMET in the upcoming weeks for a new track for the film. The movie is currently in post-production with a tentative Fall release date. Overall a fun and informative panel for a film you should put on your rader! More when we hear it. Graham Reznick's I CAN SEE YOU and new 3D short film THE VIEWER opens in NYC next week!

ICONS received an email from filmmaker Graham Reznick alerting us to the opening of his latest feature I CAN SEE YOU. We'll let Graham take it away:

"Hey everyone!

Next Wednesday, April 29th, my first feature film I CAN SEE YOU will be opening in New York City at The Kraine Theater. To make the event even more special, I've been working round the clock on a top secret new project... a 3D short film! I've always been a big fan of 3D movies, with the red and blue glasses and everything... so now that 3D is making a comeback (and may actually stick around for a while), I decided to throw my hat into the ring. We even got the special glasses (you get to keep a pair!).

In addition, we'll be showing a never before screened version of I Can See You *with a brand new ending,* HD projection and a 5.1 surround sound mix - so it will be a nice upgrade for those of you who had come to the screening of I Can See You last year.

The more folks who come to the shows, the better chance we have at extending our run to other cities- so tell all your friends, blog about it, send some tweets* (*i'm sorry), talk about it loudly to friends at a cafe, hold up signs behind on-the-scene newscasters, write backwards notes on mirrors, whisper it to sleeping bums - whatever little bit helps!

Tickets are already available online at: http://www.cinemapurgatorio.com/Movies/i-can-see-you

I CAN SEE YOU and THE VIEWER will run from April 29th through May 5th, with an additional showing on May 10th. Note that there is only one screening per day, and the weekend showings are during the afternoon.

You can see a trailer for I CAN SEE YOU at: http://www.icanseeyoumovie.com

Hope to see you at the screenings!

-Graham

Glass Eye Pix is proud to announce the NYC theatrical run of I CAN SEE YOU and THE VIEWER; a date is set for the DVD release.

I CAN SEE YOU and THE VIEWER to run at NYC'S Kraine Theater April 29th through May 5th, with an additional screening on May 10. DVD to be released on May 26th.

I CAN SEE YOU: A Psychedelic Campfire Tale

I CAN SEE YOU, the fifth in Larry Fessenden's celebrated low budget horror ScareFlix anthology, is writer/director Graham Reznick's debut feature film. Graham is a Glass Eye Pix regular, having sound designed many past and current Scareflix releases (The Roost, Trigger Man, Automatons and I Sell The Dead, as well as JT. Petty's Blood Red Earth and Ti West's The House of The Devil). I CAN SEE YOU was produced by fellow ScareFlix veteran Peter Phok.

SUMMARY: Three aspiring ad-men take a weekend in the wilderness, brainstorming for their first assignment: to overhaul the image of a once popular cleaning product, Claractix. While in the woods, a girlfriend’s mysterious disappearance sparks a harrowing descent into unreality. Personalities contort into extremes and visits are made by a specter from Claractix campaigns of the past as the film careens towards it’s startling climax.

The film’s ad-men are played by real-life members of Waverly Films (Ben Dickinson, Duncan Skiles and Chris Ford), a Brooklyn based production company specializing in commercials, music videos, and who have an immense cult following with their comedic YouTube shorts. Summer Day, the free spirited temptress destined to drive them apart, is played by Heather Robb (Trigger Man, The House of The Devil, I Sell the Dead), lead singer of popular folk-rock group The Spring Standards. Long-lost ClarActix pitchman Mickey Hauser is played by producer Larry Fessenden, who describes the movie as "1960’s psychedelia by way of David Lynch with dashes of Philip K. Dick and Cronenberg."

Reznick says: “I CAN SEE YOU is about the experience of being young and ambitious in New York City, but blind to any sense of responsibility or stakes. When the naïve lead ad designer in I CAN SEE YOU takes his ill-fated trip into the woods and is faced with an impossible situation, his mind malfunctions. He doesn’t know how to cope with something outside of his safe, easy existence, and we experience his world shattering breakdown along with him. I love watching films that show the world through the tinted perspective of another person – and in I CAN SEE YOU we watch the world through the eyes of someone who is quickly losing his grasp on reality."

THE VIEWER: A Telepathic Interrogation in Three Dimensions

In addition to the feature, Glass Eye Pix enters the world of Stereoscopic 3D cinema with "The Viewer," a brand new short film also written and directed by Graham Reznick.

SUMMARY: "The Viewer" is a telepathic interrogation experienced from the perspective of a suspected murderer. Telepathic Viewing doesn't come without a price, however; as the suspect resists the mind-reader's tactics, the "viewing" intensity is increased... dissolving the fragile boundaries between memory, identity and reality.

"The Viewer" was shot using a specialized two camera HD rig designed by cinematographer Gordon Arkenberg (I Can See You, The Meaning of Tea). Featuring a multi-dimensional 5.1 soundscape designed by Graham Reznick, "The Viewer" is a psychedelic feast for both the eyes and ears. Starring Mick Lauer as "The Viewer" and Lindsay Burdge as "The Victim." Written and directed by Graham Reznick.

THE VENUE

I CAN SEE YOU and THE VIEWER screen at the Kraine Theatre, within a custom, high-definition, full-surround, 3D system, maintained by distribution and exhibition company Cinema Purgatorio. Founded by former Pioneer Theater chief Ray Privett, Cinema Purgatorio installed the system at the Kraine for the four-month-long release of CHRISTMAS ON MARS, a science fiction film made by rock band the Flaming Lips. Together, Glass Eye and Cinema Purgatorio are adding the 3D capabilities for the screenings of I CAN SEE YOU and THE VIEWER.

Says Ray Privett: "I founded Cinema Purgatorio to work on extraordinarily creative film projects that deserve and reward extra special attention. I CAN SEE YOU is a great match. I've been lucky to work with Glass Eye and Scareflix many times elsewhere in the past, and I'm honored to work with them again."

-I CAN SEE YOU will be preceeded by THE VIEWER during it's theatrical run, from April 29th to May 5th at the Kraine Theater in NYC. Tickets are available through CinemaPurgatorio.com.

David Slade Directing TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE?!

From 30 DAYS OF NIGHT to THE TWILIGHT SAGA?! Based on the hit novel series by Stephenie Meyer, TWILIGHT was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starred Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Edi Gathegi, Rachelle Lefevre, Ashley Greene, Billy Burke, Cam Cigandet, Kellan Lutz, Anna Kendrick and Taylor Lautner. Cult/horror fans will rejoice, as this film also reunites Spinell with another Maniac-¬alum; Hammer horror film star and Bond-girl babe Caroline Munro. Contrary to the typical psycho-stalker-roaming-the-streets affair, The Last Horror Film at the height of the American slasher revolution takes place during the 1981 Cannes Film Festival. Vinny Durand (Spinell), a lonesome New York cab driver who lives at home with his mother, has dreams of becoming a famous film director. Consumed by his depraved obsession with beautiful horror actress Jenna Bates (Bond-Girl Caroline Munro) and determined to have her star in his first film, Vinny trails her to the Cannes Film Festival. While Vinny's disturbing fascination grows, a mysterious killer begins slaughtering all people in Jenna's entourage. Is the obsessed fanatic and the psychotic killer one in the same? Will this be Jenna's Last Horror Film?

The Last Horror Film DVD will include the uncut version of the film, which has never been released in America on video and was only available on the pre-certification UK VHS tape released over 25 years ago. The Troma Team produced a fascinating new featurette, My Best Maniac which features Spinell’s closest friend, Luke Walter who boldly reminisces about the hilarious antics and vivacious spirit of Spinell during the film’s production. Also inclusive on the disc, is a brand new audio commentary with Walter, a new interview with Maniac director William Lustig, Buddy G’s (Combat Shock) rarely-seen short film Mr. Robbie (aka Maniac 2) which features Spinell in one of his last performances before his untimely death, original and new trailers, and much more!

Troma Team Video is proud to present the 2-Disc Never-Before-Seen Director’s Cut of Buddy Giovinazzo’s dark, nihilistic masterwork ‘Combat Shock’. Combat Shock has remained hidden in the underground video universe for more than 25 years, and has now fully ripened to disgust, revolt and depress a new generation of indie film viewers. Released theatrically in 1986, the film was dismissed mostly by mainstream critics, but scarred the retinas of the indie cult/horror counterculture and is now regarded as one of the supreme classics of 1980s underground cinema. Inspired by true ghastly headlines about tormented war veterans, Giovinazzo centers his story on Frankie Dunlan, a Vietnam veteran whose life is a festering sewer of poverty, hopelessness and violence.

His wife is pregnant and hungry. His one year old son is sick and horribly deformed from
exposure to Agent Orange. His family is being evicted from their rundown apartment. He roams the streets looking for work. His childhood friend is a strung-out junkie. He sees underage prostitutes working the streets. Yet he doesn’t give up hope. Maybe there’s a job at the unemployment office. Maybe his father will help. As Frankie returns home, he finds a way out of the horror --desperate times call for desperate measures.

‘Combat Shock’ culminates into one of the most lurid and yet melancholic endings ever committed to celluloid.

Included in this fully comprehensive package will be the heavily sought-after, never-before-seen original cut of the film entitled American Nightmares, which is viciously more repulsive and grim than any other available version. Giovinazzo enthusiasts and cult film fanatics alike will celebrate this highly anticipated set, which also features ‘Post-Traumatic, an American Nightmare’, a new featurette which contains interviews with Giovinazzo contemporaries lending their praise and critical analyzes of Combat Shock. Present in the featurette is John McNaughton (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer), William Lustig (Maniac), Jorg Buttgereit (Necromantik), Jim Van Bebber (Deadbeat at Dawn, The Manson Family), Roy Frumkes (Street Trash), Mitch Davis (Fantasia Film Festival), Joe Kane (The Phantom at the Movies), Rick Sullivan (The Gore Gazette – his first interview in 20 years!), David Gregory (Severin Films), and the star of Combat Shock, in his first interview ever, Rick Giovinazzo. The set will also include, an audio commentary with Giovinazzo and Buttgereit, an all new interview with Giovinazzo conducted by Lloyd Kaufman, three never-before-seen short films, a look at the locations from Combat Shock as they appear today, original press and photo galleries, new liner notes written by Steve Puchalski of Shock Cinema, and other highly anticipated material which we have yet to announce.

Combat Shock's underground success and Buddy Giovinazzo's unflinching artistic vision eventually led to his remarkable 1996 sophomore feature, No Way Home, starring Tim Roth, James Russo and Deborah Kara Unger. Giovinazzo is also an accomplished novelist, whose literary works have been championed as the 90s answer to Herbert Selby Jr. (Last Exit to Brooklyn, Requiem for a Dream). Currently, Giovinazzo lives and works in Berlin where he is continually directing and producing films for the German market which has embraced his unique output. Life is Hot in Cracktown, based on his own powerful, disturbing novel of the same name, is currently playing the festival circuit and is distributed by Lightning Media.

Trailer For Julie Delpy's THE COUNTESS!

I've always greatly admired the work of Julie Delpy. Sure, I may have first encountered her in AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS (the far inferior sequel to AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON), but her performances in Krzysztof Kieslowski's WHITE (as part of the THREE COLORS trilogy) and later in BEFORE SUNRISE & BEFORE SUNSET have always impressed me & made me a life long fan of her work.

Needless to say, I've always hoped she'd return  to the genre in some capacity, and while this isn't exactly a "horror" movie, writing, directing and starring in a film based on the real life of Countess Elizabeth Bathory is both impressive and intriguing. Take a look at Delpy as Bathory for yourself in the trailer to her latest film, THE COUNTESS below:

The rise and fall of the notorious Countess Bathory who fell a victim to love, conspiracy and her own murderous vanity. From the Oscar Nominated Director of 2 DAYS IN PARIS.

The true story of Countess Bathory born in 1560. At the age of 14, she married a powerful warlord, 10 years her senior. Although their relationship became cold and distant she bore him four children. While he was away fighting wars, she kept up their estate with the help of her confidant, the witch Anna Darvulia, becoming increasingly powerful. She was feared, admired and loathed by many even the King had to obey her wishes. After her husband died, she met a handsome young man. They fell passionately in love. However, she was desperately concerned that she was not young enough to keep him. For 12 years, she waited for his return and in mad desperation, began to bathe in the blood of virgins, convinced that it would provide her with eternal youth and beauty, setting in motion the chain of bloody and treacherous events that led to her demise.

FEARnet Dropped by TIME WARNER? Get It Back!

FearNetIn their ongoing effort to bring you the worst possible customer service experience, and following on the heels of their recently announced 40GB per month bandwidth limit on their internet customers, Time Warner Cable has recently dropped FEARnet from it's on-demand roster. The on-demand horror network has also been dropped by BRIGHTHOUSE CABLE. Now with MONSTERS HD gone, FEARnet dropped, the only outlet for TIME WARNER and BRIGHTHOUSE customers is Universal's woefully inadequate CHILLER (you know, with their episodes of FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES that look like they're aired from a 20 year old VHS tape that was left out in the sun).

FEARnet's on-demand services brought a lot of fantastic stuff to horror fans this year, including the the uncut MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, as well, airing the 5 unseen episodes of FEAR ITSELF (well maybe those could've....but I digress...). And of course, the fine folks at FEARnet provided us at ICONS OF FRIGHT with a fantastic Clive Barker contest not more than two months ago.

Well, in response to TIME WARNER'S unfortunate decision a Facebook petition has gone live. So click on over here to join up:

FEARnet also has a page up showing how you can get in direct contact with your cable provider:

'LIVE EVIL' BRINGS NEW BLOOD TO AMERICAN HORRORS TELEVISION PROGRAMMING!

Disturbing New Vision of Vampires Coming to Hart D. Fisher’s Internationally syndicated horror show, American Horrors!

LOS ANGELES, CA- Crime Pays, Inc. founder and president, Hart D. Fisher, has announced the latest addition to his American Horrors slate of television programming with the addition of Live Evil, the critically acclaimed, controversial new vision of vampire horror from writer/director Jay Woelfel and producer Mark Terry. Live Evil presents a disturbing new take on the classic horror archetype, with a pack of vampires roaming America’s back roads and badlands to find “pure blood” untainted by the ills of modern society. On opposite ends of the bloodsuckers’ struggle are two genre icons: Tim Thomerson (the Trancers series, Near Dark, Dollman) as the sword-slinging Priest, and Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, The Devil’s Rejects, Rob Zombie’s Halloween) as a “pusher” of stolen blood to a vampiric clientele.

"American Horrors and Hart Fisher are a perfect match for Live Evil. Hart understands the importance of our American genre stars like Tim Thomerson and Ken Foree.” said producer, Mark Terry. “Yet at the same time our baby vampire scene seems like it would be something controversial enough that I would read in one of his comics.”

Live Evil’s unflinching, visceral updating of a legendary evil taps perfectly into the vein of Hart D. Fisher’s Real World Horror Revolution, and is a powerful new addition to the American Horrors brand of bleeding-edge independent horror programming.

Offers Fangoira Magazine’s Michael Gingold “Fango can attest that it [Live Evil] contains plenty of blood, skin, grisly makeup FX and violent action.”

American Horrors began as a 2 hour television show syndicated through out Europe and Scandinavia by The Global Broadcasting Company, and in partnership with Indie Pictures has grown to be a major emerging distributor of Feature horror films, forging innovative partnerships with metal record powerhouses Nuclear Blast Records and Century Media. Starting in June 2009 American Horrors will release one feature film a month, including a new directors cut of Nobody Loves Alice.

Mr. Fisher is seeking out more indie filmmakers, feature films, shorts and horror themed music videos to be part of the American Horrors brand that reaches into tens of millions of households across countries including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria via Broadcast television, and now in America via DVD, VOD and Internet downloads.

Spooky Dan's TWILIGHT: THE PUPPET SAGA!

Since TWILIGHT just hit DVD last week, we figured we'd share with you a little something that's been making the rounds here on the internet. Our buddy (and horror activist) Spooky Dan created TWILIGHT: THE PUPPET SAGA, the latest in his series of puppet recreations of popular genre based movies. Most TWILIGHT fans have seen this, it even got posted on author Stephenie Meyer's website at one point. But even if you DON'T like TWILIGHT, you'll still get a kick out of this short. (How could you not? Everyone loves puppets!) Check out "the most highly anticipated vampire puppet film EVER" below!

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS Finally Coming To DVD!

It's official. The fine fiends over at Dead Pit.com had a chat with Red Shirt Pictures Michael Felsher who confirmed that he's working on the supplemental material for a special edition of Fred Dekker's beloved NIGHT OF THE CREEPS! (The film where genre legend Tom Atkins first uttered the words "Thrill me!")

Felsher's Red Shirt did a stellar job on the features for Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD DVD, so we can probably expect similar treatment on CREEPS. In fact, the filmmaker confirms it. He tells Dead Pit, "It is coming out officially for the first time ever. Fred Dekker is already working on it, it's going to be the director's cut with the original ending. We're going to go balls to the wall with the special features on it ... I talked to Sony today, its official, we're going ahead and its coming out in October! It's officially in production...and moving forward, its coming!"

We can expect NIGHT OF THE CREEPS in October of this year, courtesy of Sony! More when we hear it!

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS was written & directed by Fred Dekker and stars Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Witlow, David Paymer and Tom Atkins.

First Look At SAW: THE VIDEO GAME!

Clanbase has posted the first screen captures from the eagerly anticipated (and long delayed) SAW video game! Brash Entertainment was initially working on the game (based on the hit franchise movies) until that company went bankrupt, so now Konami (home of SILENT HILL) is shepherding the project to completion.

The Clanbase article has a few quotes from David Daniels, the director of marketing for Konami. He says, "Because we have leadership in the survival horror genre, we're passionate about it and wanted to find another property on par with 'Silent Hill.' 'Saw' has grossed over $600 million worldwide and sold over 16 million DVDs, so we felt like it was a great opportunity to align ourselves with one of the most successful horror film franchises in history."

The article explains the SAW video game's synopsis: Combining action, puzzles, mystery and terror, the game will have an original plot that ties into but is however not entirely adapted from the films. The gameplay is focused on the unusual traps serial killer Jigsaw likes to rig for his tortured victims. You take control of a character in an asylum who has to decide whether and how to solve the puzzles and save Jigsaw's victims.

Daniels adds, "'Silent Hill' is more about psychological terror, but 'Saw' for us is more about graphic, intense horror that overwhelms you. We want players to turn away from the screen for just a moment because of the visual intensity."

SAW: THE VIDEO GAME is due to hit stores in October (just in time for SAW VI) for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. More at the original article HERE!

Teaser Trailer For Twisted Pictures THE TORTURED!

"How far would YOU go?" That's what the first teaser trailer to Twisted Pictures latest genre picture THE TORTURED asks you. (Reminds me of the early "How f***ed up is that?" teaser trailers for the original SAW!)

Directed by Robert Lieberman (TV's DEXTER, THE DEAD ZONE & THE X-FILES) from a script by Marek Posival, THE TORTURED stars Jesse Metcalfe (TV's Desperate Housewives) and Erika Christensen (RIDING THE BULLET) as 2 parents who's son is kidnapped by a nasty pedophile (played by genre fave Bill Moseley). Let's just say that judging from this teaser trailer, things don't look too good for Moseley!

No release date is set, but we'll keep you posted. The trailer below is courtesy of our fiends at Dread Central!

Mysterious Pictures Emerge From THE UNDERTAKER!

Spanish filmmaker Vick Campbell sent over 4 new stills of some bodacious bloodied vampire chicks from his almost completed feature length THE UNDERTAKER. Sadly, there was no further info in the email. No synopsis, cast or crew info. But I did some digging on-line and found even more bizarre pics from this crazy opus on FearNET's website. (Check that out HERE!) On the Horror Movies.com forums, I found this quick cryptic description: "A new production, The Undertaker aKa El Sepulturero, a new Spain Zombies film, directed by Vick Campbell of Graveyard of the Dead."

I love foreign horror movies, especially stuff from Spain, so I'm hoping to hear more about THE UNDERTAKER. In the meantime, check out these photos below, as well as the ones on FearNET's site!

THE STEPFATHER Teaser Poster!

I love the original STEPFATHER. Hell, I'm a big fan of the highly under-rated and under-appreciated sequel STEPFATHER 2. And as much as I like Dylan Walsh (NIP/TUCK), it's going to be really, really tough to match that performance given by Terry O'Quinn (LOST's Locke!) from the original 2 movies. But... I'm willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt. Especially after looking at this simple teaser poster. JoBlo's got the entire image for the theatrical one sheet. Click HERE or the teaser image below to see the entire poster!

THE STEPFATHER remake is rumored to borrow elements from the first 2 original movies. You can read our FRIGHT exclusive interview with STEPFATHER 2 director JEFF BURR by clicking HERE or the teaser image below!

Directed by Nelson McCormick (PROM NIGHT) from a script by Joe Cardone, the STEPFATHER remake stars Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward, Penn Badley, Amber Heard, Paige Turco, Braenden LeMasters, Skyler Samuels and Jon Tenney. It's due in theaters on October 16th, 2009! More when we hear it!

Cinzia Monreale (THE BEYOND) Added To The Italian Invasion At CHILLER!

This ain't no April Fool's Joke. Fulci fans have one more reason for joy at this April's Chiller Theatre in Parsippany, NJ! Cinzia Monreale, most famous for her appearance as the ethereal, blind Emily in Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND, has just been added to the stellar list of Italian stars for the convention. Cinzia also appeared in Joe D'Amato's BUIO OMEGA, and acted for Italian legend Dario Argento in THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. She joins such Fulci alum as Ian McCulloch, Al Cliver, Otaviano Dell'acqua and Richard Johnson of ZOMBIE, and Silvia Collatina and Giovanni Frezza of HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, giving fans of the Italian undead the opportunity to meet some of the subgenre's stalwarts at this April's Italian Invasion, in less than three weeks.

UPDATED: Let The Wrong Subtitles In To LET THE RIGHT ONE IN?!

If you're an avid reader of this or just about any other horror web-publication, then no doubt you've heard plenty about the Swedish indie-vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN - a somber, haunting & beautiful tale directed with finesse by Tomas Alfredson. In the last year, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN has quickly garnered "cult" like status among genre & movie fans alike. It managed to top the "best of 2008" lists for just about every horror website out there, and has become a favorite for the entire ICONS staff here. So, naturally, we were all rather excited that the film finally was released last week here in the US on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

I personally decided to host a screening of the DVD with a handful of friends that had yet to experience LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. (Mind you, I'd already had an advance early screener copy of the movie for months and had seen it twice during it's limited theatrical run, so it's safe to say that I knew the film rather intimately. We were all excited to watch a top quality DVD version though in the comfort of my own home.)

About 20 minutes into the screening, I was absolutely horrified.

The subtitles had been drastically changed since the last time I saw it, and dare I say... had been completely dumbed down? Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the dark humor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful and a favorite amongst audiences last year. I tried to carry on and ignore it, hoping that only a few of the translations were off... but... I was wrong. Just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie.

It became so frustrating, that I stopped the US DVD, got my original screener copy & we continued by watching that version instead. I realize now that sadly for everyone else out there, they don't have this option.

What's exactly wrong? How bad could it be? Let me walk you through it with a series of screengrabs from the original screener cut, and the recently released US DVD/Blu-Ray...

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This important scene is the first conversation between the main characters Oskar and Eli. Eli's immediate sarcasm sets up for the type of dark humor you can expect from the rest of the movie. It's not meant for "laughs", but it completely sets up the tone of the overall movie.

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Now look at how that entire above conversation is carried out in the DVD release...

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Eli tells Oskar that she can't be friends with him, despite just meeting for the first time. I know I can personally remember how I sarcastically joked with girls from school back when I was 12...

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: That easily relatable type of conversation is lost in translation here... A few words off make him sound a bit more arrogant here rather then playful...

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: The character of Haken is Eli's keeper, the one that supplies our pint sized vampire with pint sized plastic cartons of blood! After failing on his most recent attempt, he very nervously searches for the right words to calm the fury of his master. He chooses simply "Forgive me."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Here... he just says "Sorry." Sure, it may read like he's saying the same thing, but I assure you, the intent for Haken is to beg for forgiveness, not stupidly say "D'uh! Sorry!"

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This entire conversation introduces us to the other cast of characters in LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. You get the vibe they come to this diner/pub often, talk politics and news & share a few beers together. They spot Haken, the "new guy" in town and decide to invite him over. Read the following:

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Now look at how ALL of the above was summed up for the American DVD release, which... quite franky doesn't make any sense whatsoever:

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Lacke tries to politely invite over Haken to join them. Look at how he asks him in the original translation:

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: And now, the American DVD translation:

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This is again, subtle. But the way Eli confesses her age here is in line with all her conversations with Oskar. It also comes into play again later in the movie:

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Would anyone you know say "12 about?"

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This sweet scene ends with Eli teaching Oskar how to solve a Rubiks Cube. While she's explaining, you can tell from the way Oskar stares at her that he's falling for his new friend...

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: But why bother holding onto the intent of that scene? Instead we get "You have to start here... then here."

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: In this important moment, Oskar explains to Eli how the bullies at school will not relent and pick on him constantly. She tells him to fight back and "Hit back. Hard."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Summed up even quicker here... and losing all the power of her words.

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Oskar teaches Eli how to use Morse Code so they can communicate at night via the wall that separates their apartments. First word he says to her when they realize it works? "SWEET."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: American DVD translations? Why bother with a full word. We get letters that don't spell anything... Well done.

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Now this is important. You can already tell there's something strained about the relationship between Haken and Eli. He's failed her before, yet she still tells him he doesn't have to go out on her behalf tonight in search of blood. His response says so much, "What else am I good for?"

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Completely lost in this version. There's a reason Haken is so devoted to Eli that doesn't come across clearly during the first viewing, but does on repeat viewings.

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Haken is attempting to murder a boy to harvest his blood for Eli. The boy's friend comes looking for him and breaks up this tense moment with a funny line saying "Come on, man... You can jerk off at home."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: You're supposed to break the tension of that scene with that line above, but that's not what we get below:

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: SPOILER ALERT - Now, in an act of desperation, Haken decides he'd rather sacrifice himself then risk anyone catching Eli. His last words? He calls out her name. WHICH you can hear him say. (Eli translates the same in English, folks...)

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: The American one pretends to tell us something we didn't already know... even though we HEAR him calling out her name when this translation comes up...

I honestly can go on and on and on, but I think you get the point.

How could this have possibly happened? The original screener copies carried the correct subtitles. The proof is above! Was it someone at Magnolia or Magnet's fault for this major, major blunder?

Here's a theory: The original screener attributes that the subtitles were done by Ingrid Eng. (Multiple kudos to Miss Eng for doing an amazing job.) My guess is that in order to re-use them for the American version of the DVD, Magnolia/MAGNET probably had to pay Ingrid again for her services. Rather then do that, perhaps they hired someone else to do the translations for real cheap.

And cheap they are!

EPIC FAIL.

I hate to say this because I've been a huge advocate of this movie from the get-go, but because of my love of this movie, I have to strongly advise against buying the Magnolia/Magnet US DVD or Blu-Ray version of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, because it is NOT the version of the movie the director would've wanted you to experience. Perhaps there's a good import DVD version of it out there somewhere? Or maybe Magnolia can rectify this disasterous mistake and re-issue the DVD again in a year or so.

We'll keep you posted on this story as we research more...

In the meantime, read our FRIGHT exclusive interview with LET THE RIGHT ONE IN director TOMAS ALFREDSON:

UPDATE 2: FRIGHT reader John send along the following exchanges with Magnolia.

*NOTE: There seems to be a ton of confusion over the following. To clarify, the following is not an "official" statement. The following is an email that a reader named John wanted me to share with you. The following is Magnolia's response to HIM. I cut and pasted portions of his email to ICONS that led to the slight confusion. John said his emails with Mongrel were the complete opposite of this one & that they were very receptive. He was pointing out the difference between how the 2 companies are dealing with their costumers. Below being the email he got from Magnolia. Hope that clears up the confusion...

"Yes the bloggers are having a field day on this one.   Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it's the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details.   The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it's a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles.    It's not a defective or faulty subtitle file.  Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen.  Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release.   Frankly it's not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue.  This wouldn't have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong.  They are not.  We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective.   Title came out two weeks ago and general public don't notice and don't care - bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on.    We have decided that based on the feedback that we will be making a running change, so that going forward (once inventories deplete), we will be making that subtitle version available. Options in set up will be; English Subtitles / English (theatrical) Subtitles  / Spanish Subtitles""

Editors note: I'm quite sure director Tomas Alfredson would disagree with the above.

- Genre heroines join Halo-8's 'illustrated film' by award-winning filmmaker -

Los Angeles, CA, March 26, 2009 - Genre heroines Danielle Harris ("HALLOWEEN 4 & 5," Rob Zombie's "HALLOWEEN 1 & 2"), Katie Nisa ("THREAT"), and Nicki Clyne ("BATTLESTAR GALACTICA") have joined Lance Henriksen ("AVP: ALIEN VS PREDATOR"), Bill Moseley ("THE DEVIL'S REJECTS"), Tiffany Shepis ("NIGHT OF THE DEMONS" remake), Justin Pierre (singer of MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK), Lydia Lunch (Richard Kern's "HARDCORE COLLECTION"), and Davey Havok (singer of A.F.I.) in the cast of the 'illustrated film' adaptation "GODKILLER," written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Pizzolo ("THREAT") based on the comic book he created with illustrator Anna Muckcracker. Producer Halo-8 Entertainment is planning to unveil a new and exclusive preview clip at Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles April 17-19, 2009.

Danielle Harris Katie Nisa Nicki Clyne

"The ladies of GODKILLER are ferocious mixes of strength, sexuality, and survivalism... it's a pretty tough world Anna & I created and these characters need brave, powerful voices. I couldn't be happier with the casting of Danielle, Katie, and Nicki, each one has a bold and unique personality that channels a rich depth and humanity into the film," said Pizzolo.

About the GODKILLER 'illustrated film'
The 'illustrated film' Pizzolo is creating for the adaption mixes elements of anime, radio drama, video games, and motion comics. Utilizing the original artwork from the comic book, the 'illustrated film' adds motion animation, visual effects, elaborate sound design, music, and voice-acting performances. Halo-8 intends to release limited-edition, serialized, short-form DVDs through the Spring and Summer before releasing the full-length feature theatrically in Fall 2009.

Pizzolo explained "when we decided to make an anime adaptation of the comic book, I couldn't see how a traditional animated approach would do justice to Anna's incredibly lush and detailed illustrations. It made perfect sense to adapt the medium to suit her art, rather than vice versa."

GODKILLER takes place in a dark-future after economic collapse, after nuclear holy war, and after Earth is colonized by alien races.

Pizzolo and Halo-8 are currently putting together a team for the 'illustrated film' based on his comic book "HOW I LOST MY VIRGINITY -BY ALEXANDRA JONES," as well as other titles Halo-8 has in development.

UPDATE: Magnolia To Let The RIGHT Subtitles In!

Our friend Tim Anderson from Bloody-Disgusting brought to our attention that Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits.com has contacted Magnolia/Magnet to find out more details on the "subtitles" issue that we outlined from the US DVD/Blu-Ray in our previous news post HERE.

As we await an official statement from Magnolia/Magnet, here's what they told Digital Bits:

"We've been made aware that there are several fans that don't like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version."

(From The Digital Bits:) We asked Magnet some follow-up questions, specifically how people will be able to identify the new discs, when they'll be available in stores and if there will be an exchange program for those who have the existing version. Here's what they said:

"There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH."

Icons Of Fright is happy to hear that Magnolia and Magnet are listening to the fans and have chosen to make the correct subtitles available going forward. Along with several other publications we have been raving about this brilliant film for the last year now, and we'll at least rest easy knowing the version of the film we highly recommended will soon be available.

I love what Magnolia and Magnet have done with their genre films. Three of their films were among our BEST OF 2008 list last year. They're known for finding quality horror films such as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, TIMECRIMES, SPLINTER, DONKEY PUNCH, SHROOMS, not to mention their fine work in previous years bringing us THE HOST and THE SIGNAL (A movie we strongly advocated upon it's release). If we didn't care tremendously about this movie, we would never have spoken out about it so passionately. We're just glad that they're looking into the best possible ways to rectify this situation. We'll keep you posted on when they issue an official statement about this issue.

UPDATE: FRIGHT reader John send along the following exchanges with both Magnolia and then Mongrel who are handling the DVD release in Canada.

From John's email: "Here is Magnolia's official response to this issue to, which I received last Friday:

I'm quite sure director Tomas Alfredson would disagree with the above. More from John below:

Here is my response to Mongrel:

"Dear Mr. Frank:

Thank-you for your quick response.  However, I must say that Magnolia's reply is quite disconcerting with it's name-calling and odd rationalizing. As for me, I simply just want to own the film I saw in the theater.  For example the line where Eli says she lives here, "in the jungle gym", is priceless, and to omit it seems inconceivable.  And there are many more examples.  So, my final question to you is:  will Mongrel, too, be making the theatrical subtitles available in future?  Until then, I will not be purchasing the dvd.

Thanks for your time and consideration"

And finally here is Mongrels decent response:

"Hi, John - I too, was pretty surprised by Magnolia's reaction.  I didn't know that they were planning to issue a different version of subtitles on the DVD; they never disclosed that to us.  In any event, we will release the new version in Canada as soon as it is available with the theatrical subtitles.  I can certainly appreciate your desire to delay your purchase until that time."
