When you look back on the cinematic exploits of lycanthropes, there is most certainly a big difference between a "werewolf" depicted on screen and "The Wolf Man". The original Wolf Man, as portrayed by Lon Chaney Jr in the 1941 Universal monster classic is unarguably the definitive "wolf man". Yes, there are amazing versions of the beast in everything from AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON to THE HOWLING to THE MONSTER SQUAD to DOG SOLDIERS to many, many more. But if you bring up that image to the left, the first thing you think is "THAT's the Wolf Man".
As far as the theatrical version of Joe Johnston's remake, all I wanted was an old-school gothic monster movie with a kick-ass version of the monster I'd grown up loving. And sure enough, whenever Benicio Del Toro graced the screen in full make-up, literally tearing people limb from limb, I thought "Holy sh*t... THAT is the Wolf Man!"
Despite it's few plot inconsistencies most likely caused by numerous re-edits, THE WOLFMAN is one of the better remakes of a classic property. While the story is slightly tweaked from the original version (including setting this one in the 1890's as opposed to the 40's), the basic premise is similar enough. In this version, Larry Talbot is a traveling actor who's been estranged from his family since a psychologically damaging incident from his childhood. He returns home after learning of the disappearance and murder of his brother. He's attacked by the same beast and later starts going on his own nighttime extra curricular activities.
Emily Blunt plays Gwen Conliffe, the object of Larry's affections and also widow to his recently deceased brother. Anthony Hopkins plays the senior Talbot.
Benicio Del Toro playing Larry Talbot and the Wolfman seems like perfect casting, especially considering the actor's resemblance to Lon Chaney Jr. However, in the theatrical version, his performance (or as some reviewers have argued, his lack of one) is by far the weakest link. The director's cut however fixes that, so anyone disappointed with Talbot's lack of character development should be satisfied with his portrayal (now more in tact) in this new version.

Another big day for digital releases of horror films.
Perhaps the most anticipated DVD of the bunch is the long-awaited THE STEPFATHER, the Terry O'Quinn cult classic that has only been available by way of bootleg until now. Fans can finally purchase a legitimate copy, that boasts several extras. Another oldie garnering its first official release is HARDWARE. If you're looking for new scares, DRAG ME TO HELL also comes out today. For the kids, there's the animated KONG: RETURN TO THE JUNGLE. The latter three are also available as Blu-Ray discs.
On the Blu-Ray front, THE CRAFT will see its first releases on the hi-def format.
As the calendar brings us closer to Halloween, the horror releases keep coming. Pick up these and many more in the weeks ahead.

The Chinese proverbs warns you, "May your life be interesting," and today sure is an interesting day for DVD and Blu-Ray releases, to say the least.
This week sees the DVD releases of the much lauded THE CHILDREN, as well as a pair of remakes, one long shelved, one a SyFy version of a Stephen King adaptation that's being remade elsewhere, neither much called for. Yes, Oct. 6 sees the release of IT'S ALIVE and CHILDREN OF THE CORN.
For those with Blu-Ray players, Takashi Miike's deceptively vicious AUDITION sees its re-release in the high-def form. Miike's Japanese, and I can personally affirm that the Chinese proverb doesn't apply to this one.
At least not until it's killer ending, which should shock and disgust like few others.
It's no secret that ICONS OF FRIGHT has had a long history with filmmaker Paul Solet and his movie GRACE. We've been firm supporters of this talented up and coming writer & director since we first met him at a Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors show back in 2005 and we were there to help out when the time came for him to make his short film version of GRACE back in 2006. Since then (as the story goes), the fine gents over at Ariescope stepped in and helped get the feature length film made. With GRACE: "The Movie" now out & available everywhere on DVD and Blu-Ray, we thought it'd be fun to go back and look at the original 6 minute short film that started it all. Not only that but we also put together a second version of the GRACE short film with a commentary track by writer/director Paul Solet and FX artist (and ICONS scribe) Jason Alvino. I can not wait until October 6th! Because the DVD and Blu-Ray of Michael Dougherty's TRICK 'R TREAT finally comes out and I plan on watching it every day until Halloween night! Yahoo has debuted another brand new trailer for the much praised Halloween anthology, and this one by far best represents the tone of the movie itself. This is out 'A CHRISTMAS STORY' for Halloween! Filmmaker Steven Shea from Abyssmal Entertainment just sent over a few pics and the teaser trailer for his latest short film 2:22. ICONS actually spoke to Shea back when he was promoting his feature HOODOO FOR VOODOO (Read that HERE). 2:22 was written & directed by Shea and stars Tara Lightfoot as Vicki Palmer, whom after an incredible night out with her girlfriends is wrenched from her peaceful slumber and cast mercilessly into a world spinning out of control. Writhing half naked on the cold porcelain tile of her bathroom floor, Vickie desperately tries to piece together the tragic turn of events that has twisted her once carefree life into a nightmare of pain and suffering. But when she discovers the truth, will it be too late to save her from eternal damnation?

The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to Ti West's critically acclaimed horror film THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL. A terrifically crafted homage to 80s horror masterpieces, the film premiered at Tribeca earlier this year and is sure to be an instant classic among genre fans, expertly building a mood of mounting dread to a shockingly terrifying climax. Director West, who was recently tapped by Hollywood to direct a high profile sequel, THE HAUNTING IN GEORGIA, has been regarded as something of a horror wunderkind since 2005’s THE ROOST, and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL unquestionably fulfills that promise.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s Senior Vice President Tom Quinn with Josh Braun of Submarine and Roger Kass of RingTheJing Entertainment, on behalf of MPI Media Group, Glass Eye PIX, RingTheJing Entertainment and Constructovision.
Magnet is excited to release THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL as part of the Magnolia/Magnet Ultra VOD program, which will offer home viewers a chance to see the film a month before it debuts theatrically. Magnet plans to launch the film on VOD late September 2009, with a theatrical release timed to Halloween.
THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL stars the sexy Jocelin Donahue stars as college student Samantha Hughes who takes a babysitting job in a remote mansion with her good friend Megan (indie favorite Greta Gerwig). Lionsgate has announced that FEAR ITSELF: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON will finally be released on DVD on September 15th. I say finally because only 8 of the 13 episodes aired on NBC during the show's initial run. The boxed set will feature all 13 episodes (4 of which are "director's cuts") spread out through 4 discs. Each episode will sport a bonus featurette titled "Recipe Of Fear" with cast & crew interviews. Box art, as well as the complete press release is below:

The film had made its debut last year to critical acclaim, being noted not only for its avant-garde approach to the classic grindhouse rape/revenge film, but also for its performances. The film’s headliners are Elske McCain who portrays Jessicka with an understated, yet tortured performance. The film also stars cult film veteran, Trent Haaga (Terror Firmer/Bonnie & Clyde vs. Dracula) as Marley Hoffman, a petty criminal who is desperately trying to hold the remains of his family together while keeping his temper. Rounding out the cast are Jeff Sisson, who plays the film’s antagonist, and newcomer Cisiany Olivar as Abby.
JESSICKA features a haunting original score by composer Mario Salvucci. His music recalls the best of classic music scores, recalling Goblin and Ennio Morricone. The score also features a previously unreleased version of “Rabies is a Killer”, a song by Clive Jones of Black Widow and Agony Bag.
The DVD will have many special features including “The Ashtray”, a short film by Matthew Reel. Also included will be a behind the scenes featurette, Lloyd Kaufman’s outtakes, an unreleased music video for the song “Rabies is a Killer” by Agony Bag (1980) and trailers.

Troma recently put out THE LAST HORROR FILM on DVD (full details HERE) and they pointed us over to this great video with legendary FX guru Tom Savini and Sal Sirchia talking about and remembering the late actor and star of THE LAST HORROR FILM & MANIAC, Joe Spinell. Sirchia was a very good friend of Spinell's dating back to the late 70's and is the one who found him on the night that he died. Enjoy these great stories of the legendary actor!

Even with Rob Zombie's sequel to his remake of HALLOWEEN on the horizon, interest in the original John Carpenter classic has not diminished! There's been no word on how or when us die-hard Michael Myers fans are going to get a chance to see this stuff... well, until now. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release both Rob Schmidt's WRONG TURN and Joe Lynch's WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END on Blu-Ray on September 15th, no doubt just in time for the upcoming WRONG TURN 3: LEFT FOR DEAD. According to Blu-Ray.com, you can expect a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, but early word is that there will be no new additional special features on these Blu-Ray's besides the ones from the original DVD releases. Wild Eye Releasing is pleased to announce the release of the first TEASER POSTER art for the upcoming video art gallery experience Night of the Living Dead: REANIMATED in anticipation of the project's official DVD release in winter 2009.
Organizer/Curator of the project, Mike Schneider, designed the poster as a small glimpse into the dozens of styles on display in the project, which features over 100 artists from around the world. Working from the same source, George Romeros’ original Night of the Living Dead, each artist has taken scenes and 'reanimated' them through processes ranging from CGI to puppetry and oil paintings to tattoos. This creates a new viewing experience of a timeless classic.

It's a "pre-announcement" for SLEEPAWAY CAMP REUNION 3D, the sequel to last years RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP. This would be the third in the Robert Hiltzik trilogy (excluding Michael Simpson's parts 2 & 3) which started with SLEEPAWAY CAMP, continued 20 years later with RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP and now concludes with this new film SLEEPAWAY CAMP REUNION 3D. BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON was one of the bigger breaths of fresh air the horror genre took in recent years; going on to be a cult favorite. BHM recently put the film at #70 in its top 100 horror films of all time, while Horror-Movies.ca just put the film in its “Top 10 most influential horror films of the last 10 years” list.
Blending horror and comedy, deconstructing slasher films as well as becoming one of the finest examples of the subgenre; mixing realism with melodrama... there aren’t many films that can cover these many bases and simply work. Vernon was a universal success at festivals and with critics, although criminally underseen during its limited theatrical release. Thanks to DVD, the next great slasher heavyweight has seen his hoped-for following grow in number month after month.

A shocking murder outside Merlotte’s has Bon Temps reeling. Meanwhile, Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) relationship with Bill (Stephen Moyer) is tested when she learns about Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll), and of his involvement in her uncle’s death. Sam (Sam Trammell) recalls a shape-shifting encounter he had with Maryann (Michelle Forbes) as a 17-year-old. Jason (Ryan Kwanten) gets a sudden windfall that allows him to pay for a leadership retreat with the Fellowship of the Sun. Two adversaries find themselves sharing a mysterious dungeon and, possibly, the same fate.

Sookie is forced to cope with Bill’s obligations to Jessica, as well as the romantic inconveniences the teen vampire’s presence creates. At the Light of Day leadership conference, Jason makes a favorable impression on its ambitious leaders, Steve (Michael McMillian) and Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp), though not on his jealous roommate Luke (Wes Brown). Maryann casts her spell on Merlotte’s patrons, and Sam proves helpless to stop the revelry.

When Sookie is attacked by a mysterious creature, Bill must enlist Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgård) help to save her. At the Light of Day retreat, Jason has second thoughts about the sect’s anti-vampire agenda, but Sarah and Steve counter his doubts with flattery and promises. After snapping at Tara (Rutina Wesley) and new employee Daphne (Ashley Jones), Sam decides to cut and run. A bored Jessica heads over to Merlotte’s, where a smitten Hoyt (Jim Parrack) falls under her spell. At another Maryann-hosted party, Tara finds her attraction to Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) interrupted by a swirling, aphrodisiac fog.

The date's not there yet, but it is available for pre-order, and much to my surprise, the DVD cover artwork is already on display! Friday evening, April 17th boasted the panel for the eagerly anticipated Anchor Bay release GRACE. ICONS Robg. moderated the panel with writer/director Paul Solet, producer Adam Green (HATCHET) and star Jordan Ladd. The FANGO audience was treated to a brand-new red-band trailer before the guests all took the stage.
Solet talked about the humble beginnings of the GRACE project, starting from the premiere of the short film version at the 2004 LA FANGO, which got the attention of Green who would go on to help shepherd the full length feature version. After briefly talking about the production in Regina, Canada, we were treated to a full scene from the movie, the heartbreaking "birthing" scene. If you're familiar with the original short film version, it's the scene that ends that short and ends the first act of the feature.
Jordan discussed the challenges of tackling the role of Madeline and explained how she spent a lot of time talking with friends who were in fact mother's to understand the bond between child and mother. Solet also admitted to being very open to female feedback all through the writing and re-writing process.
GRACE will be available later this year in a full loaded DVD, but after a few more festival screenings and a potential limited theatrical run. Later in the day, Solet signed promotional GRACE baby bottles at the Anchor Bay table. See full pictures below:

If you're an avid reader of this or just about any other horror web-publication, then no doubt you've heard plenty about the Swedish indie-vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN - a somber, haunting & beautiful tale directed with finesse by Tomas Alfredson. In the last year, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN has quickly garnered "cult" like status among genre & movie fans alike. It managed to top the "best of 2008" lists for just about every horror website out there, and has become a favorite for the entire ICONS staff here. So, naturally, we were all rather excited that the film finally was released last week here in the US on both DVD and Blu-Ray.
I personally decided to host a screening of the DVD with a handful of friends that had yet to experience LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. (Mind you, I'd already had an advance early screener copy of the movie for months and had seen it twice during it's limited theatrical run, so it's safe to say that I knew the film rather intimately. We were all excited to watch a top quality DVD version though in the comfort of my own home.)
About 20 minutes into the screening, I was absolutely horrified.
The subtitles had been drastically changed since the last time I saw it, and dare I say... had been completely dumbed down? Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the dark humor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful and a favorite amongst audiences last year. I tried to carry on and ignore it, hoping that only a few of the translations were off... but... I was wrong. Just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie.
It became so frustrating, that I stopped the US DVD, got my original screener copy & we continued by watching that version instead. I realize now that sadly for everyone else out there, they don't have this option.
What's exactly wrong? How bad could it be? Let me walk you through it with a series of screengrabs from the original screener cut, and the recently released US DVD/Blu-Ray...
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This important scene is the first conversation between the main characters Oskar and Eli. Eli's immediate sarcasm sets up for the type of dark humor you can expect from the rest of the movie. It's not meant for "laughs", but it completely sets up the tone of the overall movie.
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Now look at how that entire above conversation is carried out in the DVD release...
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Eli tells Oskar that she can't be friends with him, despite just meeting for the first time. I know I can personally remember how I sarcastically joked with girls from school back when I was 12... 
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: That easily relatable type of conversation is lost in translation here... A few words off make him sound a bit more arrogant here rather then playful...
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: The character of Haken is Eli's keeper, the one that supplies our pint sized vampire with pint sized plastic cartons of blood! After failing on his most recent attempt, he very nervously searches for the right words to calm the fury of his master. He chooses simply "Forgive me."
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Here... he just says "Sorry." Sure, it may read like he's saying the same thing, but I assure you, the intent for Haken is to beg for forgiveness, not stupidly say "D'uh! Sorry!"
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This entire conversation introduces us to the other cast of characters in LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. You get the vibe they come to this diner/pub often, talk politics and news & share a few beers together. They spot Haken, the "new guy" in town and decide to invite him over. Read the following:
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Now look at how ALL of the above was summed up for the American DVD release, which... quite franky doesn't make any sense whatsoever:
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Lacke tries to politely invite over Haken to join them. Look at how he asks him in the original translation:
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: And now, the American DVD translation:
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This is again, subtle. But the way Eli confesses her age here is in line with all her conversations with Oskar. It also comes into play again later in the movie:
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Would anyone you know say "12 about?"
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This sweet scene ends with Eli teaching Oskar how to solve a Rubiks Cube. While she's explaining, you can tell from the way Oskar stares at her that he's falling for his new friend...
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: But why bother holding onto the intent of that scene? Instead we get "You have to start here... then here."
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: In this important moment, Oskar explains to Eli how the bullies at school will not relent and pick on him constantly. She tells him to fight back and "Hit back. Hard."
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Summed up even quicker here... and losing all the power of her words.
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Oskar teaches Eli how to use Morse Code so they can communicate at night via the wall that separates their apartments. First word he says to her when they realize it works? "SWEET."
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: American DVD translations? Why bother with a full word. We get letters that don't spell anything... Well done.
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Now this is important. You can already tell there's something strained about the relationship between Haken and Eli. He's failed her before, yet she still tells him he doesn't have to go out on her behalf tonight in search of blood. His response says so much, "What else am I good for?"
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Completely lost in this version. There's a reason Haken is so devoted to Eli that doesn't come across clearly during the first viewing, but does on repeat viewings.
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Haken is attempting to murder a boy to harvest his blood for Eli. The boy's friend comes looking for him and breaks up this tense moment with a funny line saying "Come on, man... You can jerk off at home."
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: You're supposed to break the tension of that scene with that line above, but that's not what we get below:
ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: SPOILER ALERT - Now, in an act of desperation, Haken decides he'd rather sacrifice himself then risk anyone catching Eli. His last words? He calls out her name. WHICH you can hear him say. (Eli translates the same in English, folks...)
US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: The American one pretends to tell us something we didn't already know... even though we HEAR him calling out her name when this translation comes up...
I honestly can go on and on and on, but I think you get the point.
How could this have possibly happened? The original screener copies carried the correct subtitles. The proof is above! Was it someone at Magnolia or Magnet's fault for this major, major blunder?
Here's a theory: The original screener attributes that the subtitles were done by Ingrid Eng. (Multiple kudos to Miss Eng for doing an amazing job.) My guess is that in order to re-use them for the American version of the DVD, Magnolia/MAGNET probably had to pay Ingrid again for her services. Rather then do that, perhaps they hired someone else to do the translations for real cheap.
And cheap they are!
EPIC FAIL.
I hate to say this because I've been a huge advocate of this movie from the get-go, but because of my love of this movie, I have to strongly advise against buying the Magnolia/Magnet US DVD or Blu-Ray version of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, because it is NOT the version of the movie the director would've wanted you to experience. Perhaps there's a good import DVD version of it out there somewhere? Or maybe Magnolia can rectify this disasterous mistake and re-issue the DVD again in a year or so.

The following is an email that a reader named John wanted me to share with you. The following is Magnolia's response to HIM. I cut and pasted portions of his email to ICONS that led to the slight confusion. John said his emails with Mongrel were the complete opposite of this one & that they were very receptive. He was pointing out the difference between how the 2 companies are dealing with their costumers. Below being the email he got from Magnolia. Hope that clears up the confusion...
"Yes the bloggers are having a field day on this one. Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it's the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details. The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it's a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles. It's not a defective or faulty subtitle file. Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen. Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release. Frankly it's not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue. This wouldn't have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong. They are not. We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective. Title came out two weeks ago and general public don't notice and don't care - bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on. We have decided that based on the feedback that we will be making a running change, so that going forward (once inventories deplete), we will be making that subtitle version available. Options in set up will be; English Subtitles / English (theatrical) Subtitles / Spanish Subtitles""

Our friend Tim Anderson from Bloody-Disgusting brought to our attention that Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits.com has contacted Magnolia/Magnet to find out more details on the "subtitles" issue that we outlined from the US DVD/Blu-Ray in our previous news post HERE.
As we await an official statement from Magnolia/Magnet, here's what they told Digital Bits:
"We've been made aware that there are several fans that don't like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version."
(From The Digital Bits:) We asked Magnet some follow-up questions, specifically how people will be able to identify the new discs, when they'll be available in stores and if there will be an exchange program for those who have the existing version. Here's what they said:
"There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH."
Icons Of Fright is happy to hear that Magnolia and Magnet are listening to the fans and have chosen to make the correct subtitles available going forward. Along with several other publications we have been raving about this brilliant film for the last year now, and we'll at least rest easy knowing the version of the film we highly recommended will soon be available.
I love what Magnolia and Magnet have done with their genre films. Three of their films were among our BEST OF 2008 list last year. They're known for finding quality horror films such as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, TIMECRIMES, SPLINTER, DONKEY PUNCH, SHROOMS, not to mention their fine work in previous years bringing us THE HOST and THE SIGNAL (A movie we strongly advocated upon it's release). If we didn't care tremendously about this movie, we would never have spoken out about it so passionately. We're just glad that they're looking into the best possible ways to rectify this situation. We'll keep you posted on when they issue an official statement about this issue.

Thank-you for your quick response. However, I must say that Magnolia's reply is quite disconcerting with it's name-calling and odd rationalizing. As for me, I simply just want to own the film I saw in the theater. For example the line where Eli says she lives here, "in the jungle gym", is priceless, and to omit it seems inconceivable. And there are many more examples. So, my final question to you is: will Mongrel, too, be making the theatrical subtitles available in future? Until then, I will not be purchasing the dvd.

"Hi, John - I too, was pretty surprised by Magnolia's reaction. I didn't know that they were planning to issue a different version of subtitles on the DVD; they never disclosed that to us. Filmmaker Paul Davis recently completed production on his documentary BEWARE THE MOON: REMEMBERING AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, an extensive look back at the landmark werewolf film by John Landis. Fans will be able to watch the 98 minute epic feature when it's paired up with the Blu-Ray release of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON later this year. But not all of the great footage the crew obtained made it into the final cut. Below is a great video Davis just posted via his newly launched blog from the home of horror memorabilia collector Bob Burns. I'll let Paul explain from the entry in his blog:
Waaaaaaay back in June of 2007, while in California to shoot interviews with the likes of John Landis and Rick Baker for BEWARE THE MOON, we were fortunate enough to meet with the wonderful Bob and Kathy Burns and be treated to a tour of Bob's infamous basement. For those of you who don't know, Bob's basement is literally a cave of Hollywood wonders, with original props from the ALIEN franchise, GREMLINS, THE FLY and of course AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.
While at their home we thought it would be a great idea to shoot a mini piece on Bob and his collection, rather than just shoot B-Roll of the props and interview Bob as was originally planned. With this we figured we would be able to 'add value' to a potential DVD re-release of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON somewhere down the line. Well, we were lucky enough to get the documentary secured on the upcoming Blu-Ray release of the movie, but unfortunately the footage we shot at Bob and Kathy's place will not be included on the set.
As a thank you to Bob and Kathy and for all the fans who wouldn't otherwise get to go and see these amazing treasures in person, I've decided to release the footage ON THIS BLOG as an exclusive to all the fans of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and a thank you to all of you that have supported the project and helped us with it's eventual release later this year.

Ordinarily this Icons of Fright staffer doesn't like the cold, traffic, or New Jersey. When this cheimaphobic writer with a small bladder and an aversion to hair gel was asked to brave all three to attend the Repo Road Tour I was less than enthused. Can a hypothermic cynic warm up REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA, a gore-laden goth rock musical from the director of SAW II, III & IV starring Paris Hilton? Well, when the evening turns out to be an energetic and campy celebration, with 500 plus obsessed and cheering fans in attendance, the answer is a surprising yes.
The show at the Williams Art Center in Rutherford, NJ kicked off with an introduction by Bloody-Disgusting's Spooky Dan, who has been a tireless advocate of the movie since it's first run in L.A. this past fall. Spooky D got the crowd warmed up by bringing out a sassy little dancer for a burlesque number set to one of the songs from the flick. Immediately following was his own short film REPO: THE PUPPET OPERA. That's exactly what it sounds like, readers. Certainly helping to solidify REPO's reputation as a soon-to-be cult classic were the number of fans dressed up, in character, for the occasion. A costume contest was held with the contestants taking up the entire stage.
Right before the film started director Darren Lynn Bousman, writer/star Terrance Zdunich, and star Alexa Vega took to the stage for a brief introduction. They thanked their fans for braving the below freezing temperatures and for their support of the picture. Actress Alexa Vega, previously of the SPY KIDS franchise, seemed especially excited to be a part of this tour and film. The crew received several gifts from the crowd. Bousman gave a special call out to a family (Mom, Dad, kids and all) that had previously attended several dates on the tour.
The movie started and the crowd went crazy with fans dancing along to the numbers, callbacks shouted at the screen, and everything else you'd expect from an audience celebrating one of the favorite movies. You may have already read reviews that we've run here on IOF, but I'd like to add that the film is something special. I had doubts that I'd enjoy the movie,
and had become especially cautious considering the cult-film status seemingly forced upon it. Initially skeptical that this supposed following was more marketing ploy than having developed organically. However, the fervor of the crowd, and the number of fans that showed up, proved otherwise. As for the movie, I enjoyed it, and there's even a few numbers I still haven't gotten out of my head. I'll certainly be among the fans picking it up on DVD. It's not perfect, and it's obviously ambitious beyond it's budget, but it's to be admired. Certainly you've not seen anything quite like it.
After the film Bousman, Zundich and Vega once again took to the stage to take questions from the crowd. A few interesting facts were revealed. For example, when the budget was cut from $25 million to just $8 million the director had to think fast on ways to get his sets built. While working on SAW IV, Bousman asked for a mausoleum and graveyard set to be built for new scenes for Jigsaw, which, of course, never made into that movie. These sets were later “recycled” (wink, wink) by Bousman for REPO. Nice move!
Finally the evening wrapped up with the stars signing autographs for every single REPO fan that had showed up. With the soundtrack playing in the background during the signing some fans even took to the stage to sing along with the favorite songs.
Rather than lamenting it's limited release it's great to see fans and the creative team behind the movie doing it the old way by taking their movie from city to city. Look, here's a movie that had it's chance at a wide-release cut way, way short, but this was never a film that was made for the multiplex. And it wasn't made for the art-house either. If there is anyway you experience REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA, hopefully you get the chance to see it with a crowd attending the Road Tour. Several dates still remain, with the tour wrapping up in LA.

SCREAMERS: THE HUNTING was directed by Sheldon Wilson directed from a script by Miguel Tejada-Flores and stars Gina Holden, Greg Bryk, Tim Rozon, Stephen Amell and Christopher Redman. The DVD will have a featurette on the making-of the film. No DVD artwork for either title yet, but we'll keep you posted. Yep, the title is what you think it is and it's what kicks off the events of the movie DONKEY PUNCH. Magnet, the horror division of Magnolia Pictures sent over the US poster (which honestly isn't nearly as cool as the original UK one) and also gave us the heads up that IGN is hosting the new red-band trailer. Whoa. So Sony Home Entertainment made a sequel to the 1995 Sci-Fi/Horror SCREAMERS? Apparently so! No, Peter Weller's not in this one, but it does have Lance Henriksen! And no it's not called SCREAMERS 2, they're going by the title SCREAMERS: THE HUNTING! Regardless, here's the synopsis and trailer below!

Directed by Toby Wilkins (SPLINTER) and written by Brad Keene (THE GRAVEDANCERS), THE GRUDGE 3 stars Shawnee Smith (SAW 1-3), Matthew Knight, Marina Sirtis, Beau Mirchoff, Johanna E. Just in time for the release of the new FRIDAY THE 13TH, New Line has announced they will be releasing the "JASON SLASHER COLLECTION" DVD boxed set on February 3rd, 2009. The set includes the New Line Jason movies - JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY, JASON X and FREDDY VS. JASON. The boxed set will also include a $5 off coupon for the new flick which hits theaters on Friday February 13th, 2009. Rumor has it Paramount is readying a boxed set of the first 3 FRIDAY THE 13TH films for release around the same time, but no confirmation on that yet. We'll keep you posted. The Strangers, Bryan Bertino's directorial debut, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman took on the Sex and the City gals at the box-office this summer and nearly won. Now, Universal Pictures is readying the October 21st DVD release and we've got some info on what's on the disc.
Both the Blu-Ray and standard DVD release will contain both the theatrical and unrated cut of the movie. Additionally the the Blu-Ray and DVD release will include 2 bonus features:
1. Deleted Scenes
2. The Elements of Fear: A featurette taking a look at the production process of The Strangers. The influence of locations, sets and sounds to create fear are discussed by the crew, with anecdotes from Liv Tyler about the physical challenges of being terrorized.
The Blu-Ray disc will also contain the additional "BD-Live" features, which allows you create your own clips from the movie, and share them with your friends.

In honor of the 5 FRIGHTFEST short-films that Joe Lynch and Adam Green put together and posted on-line this past month, we've decided to share with you 2 rarely seen videos. About a year ago, a few days prior to the release of WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END, Fox had scheduled for 2 theatrical screenings of WRONG TURN 2 on the big screen. One was set for New York, while the other one was set for LA. Unfortunately, both screenings were set for the exact same evening, and director Joe Lynch couldn't make it back to his native New York to see the flick with his family. (Long Island, represent!)
The ICONS crew had prepared in advance to make something a little special from the screening for Joe. Adam Barnick brought his camera and planned to film audience reactions and thoughts following the screening with Joe's family, friends and fans. Much to our surprise, Joe himself has surprised us with a special video introduction that started the entire evening off, mentioning and thanked the ICONS crew. So below are those 2 videos. The first being Joe's video introduction to the NY premiere of WRONG TURN 2 (note: it played at the Two Boots which is part pizza-place), and the second being ICONS video to Joe from the premiere. It's been a while since we've heard anything about the directorial debut of screenwriter Michael Dougherty's TRICK 'R TREAT, which was originally due out in theaters last Halloween. Then it was listed as an 'upcoming release' on the most recent publicity sheet from Warner Bros. Now, while still unconfirmed, SHOCK is reporting that the WB are planning a direct-to-DVD release for TRICK 'R TREAT.
Their article quotes a reliable source as saying, "Just got an email. Warner is keeping Trick 'r Treat, but it's going direct-to-DVD." Rumor has it that the WB weren't sure how to sell the Halloween themed anthology horror film. (Um... here's a thought... release it on Halloween, maybe?!)
Regardless, with the success of THE LOST BOYS: THE TRIBE and the direct-to-DVD RAW FEED films, it'd make sense for them to go this route.

Montag the Magnificent (Glover) is a master illusionist who performs at underground venues, selecting female volunteers from his rave-like audiences. FANGORIA got the scoop that Director/makeup FX creator Marcus Koch's 100 TEARS will be released on DVD sometime in November/December 2008 by Anthem Pictures. The film follows the gory exploits of Gurdy the killer clown!
About what fans can expect from the DVD release, Koch told FANGO, "The disc will have an unrated cut that’s different from what everyone has seen at film festivals and Fango cons with a few additional and extended gore scenes. The special features should include a brand-new making-of featurette, with cast and crew interviews, that was not included on France and Germany’s DVD releases, as well as deleted scenes, outtakes, and a behind-the-scenes montage."

A few weeks ago, we reported on all the bonus content that will be included in the upcoming PUMPKINHEAD: 20TH ANNIVERSARY DVD, which streets September 9th, 2008. The QC Times posted an article about the upcoming shoot for the CHILDREN OF THE CORN remake. "A remake of the 1983 horror movie “Children of the Corn” will invade the Quad-Cities next month." The article continues, "Shooting will take place most of September for the movie, based on a Stephen King novella, that will debut on cable television’s Sci-Fi Channel next year in the United States and be distributed in theaters around Europe. (Rumor has it Anchor Bay Entertainment will handle the eventual US DVD release) The remake is being written, directed and produced by Donald Borchers, a producer on the original movie, which was filmed in the Sioux City, Iowa, area and spawned numerous sequels."
Some quotes from the article by Borchers:
"I went to him and asked him if there was any part of Iowa that was active in filmmaking, and he highly recommended that we go to Davenport.We are still scouting throughout the Quad-Cities and the countryside beyond, obviously, since it’s ‘Children of the Corn.’ My needs are quite simple. I need corn. And I understand you have that throughout the state."
Borchers said “Children of the Corn” was one of the few adaptations of King’s material that the prolific author himself publicly criticized. The script was rewritten from King’s original work to give it a happy ending and add two of what Borchers called “Disney-esque characters,” named Jacob and Sarah, as narrators. “They put a lot of sugar, if you will, into the coffee,” he said. “Stephen King doesn’t take his coffee with sugar.” The success of movies such as “Saw” and “The Blair Witch Project” showed “it’s no longer requisite to have a happy ending,” he added. “We wanted to stay faithful to the decisions in his original story.”
Shooting is scheduled to take place Sept. 3-30.

An Icons of Fright Exclusive! The first review of the long-awaited "Return to Sleepaway Camp"!
Return to Sleepaway Camp
It's been 5 years since principal photography completed on “Return To Sleepaway Camp” and this reviewer has to wonder why it's taken so long to get the movie out. Especially when you consider that this is a sequel that finally lives up to the rude and nasty spirit of the original “Sleepaway Camp”. Forget the mid-80's sequels, “Return To Sleepaway Camp” is THE movie us fans have been waiting for.
The sequels that hit video store shelves in '88 and '89, featuring Pamela Springsteen as Angela, were adequately goofy/gory spoofs of the cheapo slasher subgenre. They featured enough splatter and contrived continuity from the original to tide over fans for almost two decades. Still, “Sleepaway Camp” writer-director Robert Hiltzik had nothing to do with them. While they hold up as campy (no pun intended) fun they lack the seedy, sleazy, and mean-spirited tone of Hiltzik's original classic. It has always lacked a proper follow-up.
“Return to Sleepaway Camp” picks up 20+ years later. At Camp Manabe, co-owed by Frank (Vincent Pastore of “The Sopranos”) and Ronnie (Paul DeAngelo, reprising his role as the former Camp Arawak counselor) kids are being relentlessly cruel to one of the campers. This time it's the overweight and socially awkward Alan. The counselors, and his peers, relentlessly berate him about his weight, and his slovenly appearance. He appears to never bathe or change clothes. The maladroit manner with which he interacts with the opposite sex wins him no girlfriends either. Still, unlike the shy and unassuming Angela, Alan is kind of a jerk too, bullying the younger campers as much as he gets it himself.
Soon a series of increasingly grisly “accidents” start to happen around the camp. Ronnie immediately becomes paranoid, convinced that somehow Angela has found him. They seek out her brother Ricky (Jonathan Tiereston, also reprising his role) who assures them that Angela is locked away in mental facility. Ricky, Ronnie, Frank, the camp chef Charlie (played by the late Isaac Hayes), and a local sheriff with the worst facial hair since famous 'stash on the cop' in the original, try to figure out what's going on, and put a stop to the killings. Still, the cruel jokes continue, the body count rises, and everyone not already dead at Camp Manabe becomes a suspect. Maybe Angela is back in town?
“Return To Sleepaway Camp” has it's share of gruesome and violent death scenes, including one great homage to the original featuring an industrial strength deep-fryer instead of a pot of boiling water. However, most of the gore is left to the imagination, and we're usually treated to just the nasty after-effects of the murders. One of the reasons “Return To Sleepaway Camp” was rumored to have been held up was the need to complete some CGI special effects. We're not sure where these supposed CGI effects are. Most of the death scenes are done practically, with makeup effects. There's a cheap looking CGI title sequence, and one death involving fire that may have required CG, but that's it.
Like the original, but unusual for the genre, the kids in the movie are the played by actors of the appropriate age. There are no 30 year old women playing teenager girls in this movie. It's weird to watch Disney Channel-esque actors in a slasher film. With all the violence and foul language it's like watching a bunch of 14 year olds reenact a John Waters movie. It's just not something you ever got comfortable with in the original and the effect holds up here. The young cast, and their sometimes stilted and clumsy performances, give the film that loud, hysterical, crass feel of the first and lend to it a strangely trashy edge. You know what? I'll take trashy over safe and politically correct in my slasher sequels anytime.
There are a few problems with “Return” that hopefully the filmmakers have some time to fix. The pre-release cut Icons of Fright saw features a lackluster score and often amateurish editing. Be honest with yourself though: The original “Sleepaway Camp” is a fun 80's slasher movie (which this one really captures the spirit of) but it's not an amazing example of fine or remarkable filmmaking. Still, the original score made it much more cinematic and theatrical than this one comes across. Without that vintage-style score this sequel feels cheap. The pedestrian editing, featuring long fade-ins and outs between scenes, hurts the pace of the movie. Both these elements leave the film feeling somewhat unfinished, and after 5 years that's unacceptable. Also, considering the pedigree of this film the ending is somewhat anti-climactic.
Still, it's hard not to recommend the film, especially to any fan that's been waiting for a true follow-up. It's got everything you're going to want from a “Sleepaway Camp” sequel: A bunch of obnoxious, nasty, rude camp-goers getting burned, skinned, crushed, and eaten alive in a movie that's only a few half-shirts and denim shorts from looking like it's 1983 all over again.

A reader sent the Video Watch Dog blog a link to a screen-by-screen comparison of Alfred Hitchcock's classic film PSYCHO to the German television broadcast of PSYCHO and discovered that it featured several frames of never-before-seen footage! This is the pre-US edit that no one knew existed! Ouch! The word on THE LOST BOYS 2: THE TRIBE has not been good! But despite the negative buzz, is Warner's really debating a LOST BOYS 3? According to Moviehole they are! And if this report is accurate, then it'll be the sequel we all wanted to see. One that actually has both Frog Brothers (played by Corey Feldman AND Jason Newlander) as well as Corey Haim's character Sam. (Although if THIS video isn't truly staged, then they're in trouble!)
Haim only appears after the credits in LOST BOYS 2, while Newlander only pops up on the DVD's deleted alternate ending! So, a new film with these 3 is a good start for redemption with the fans.
Moviehole's Clint says, "I've spoken to one of the chaps involved in the movie since its DVD debut last week and he promises me that there will definitely be more Sam and Alan in "Lost Boys 3". Feldman, Haim and Newlander will be the stars of the next chapter." More when we hear it!
Being HUGE fans of the first FEAST movie, we can not wait for FEAST 2: SLOPPY SECONDS to hit DVD this October! (October 7th to be exact!) Filmed back to back with FEAST 3, Jon Gulager returns as director on FEAST 2: SLOPPY SECONDS, as do original writers Marcus Dunstan & Patrick Melton (FREDDY VS. JASON, FRIDAY THE 13TH remake). The monsterous sequel stars Jenny Wade, Krista Allen, Balthazar Getty, Diane Goldner, Clu Gulager, Navi Rawet, Josh Zuckerman and Judah Friedlander (!).
I am the only one who liked the American remake of "Pulse", although the rest of the Fright would like to see "Pulse 2" titled, "Pulse 2: Why-Fi?". I liked it in all it's shot entirely through a blue-filter glory.
So in this blessedly Ian Somerhalder free sequel the spirits of the dead have once again found their way into our world via our wireless routers and cell phones. Firewall, much?

Stuart Gordon's latest film STUCK will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on October 7th via Image Entertainment according to Blu-Ray.com. The post states that STUCK will be presented in 1080p video and accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. No extras have been announced for the release at this time. But of course, we'll keep you posted. STUCK stars Mena Suvari and Stephen Rea and is loosely based on a true story. So, is everyone ready for another LEPRECHAUN movie? Me neither. However, from the same twisted minds that created the green little monsters anthology comes forth a new horror comedy called TRILOQUIST! Our July 1st, 2008!
FANGORIA recently caught up with director Anthony Hickox and talked about the upcoming DVD release of his somewhat "lost" video cult classic SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE IN RETREAT (which starred Bruce Campbell, David Carradine and Deborah Foreman). Lionsgate is releasing the DVD on September 23rd (according to DREAD CENTRAL), but Michael Felsher and his Red Shirt Pictures is providing the supplementary material. Among the disc's goodies will be a first-time-ever widescreen transfer of the film, a commentary by Hickox and cinematographer Levie Issacks, and interviews with stars Bruce Campbell and David Carradine.
When asked about a potential remake to my personal fave Hickox movie WAXWORK, he tells FANGORIA it's possible. "The guy who owns the rights to it is dying to remake it, but he doesn’t get along with one of the other producers from the original. However, I’m sure they will work something out. If they do that, it still needs to be campy—and the mummy would have to move a lot faster than it did in mine! If they do get it going, my only request is to do a cameo appearance."
Here's an idea I've had for years... (so if and when someone steals it, remember where you heard it first.) Why hasn't New Line tapped the remake rights for WAXWORK? Wouldn't it be neat to see a sequel/redux of the original WAXWORK with Freddy, Jason & Leatherface? Essentially characters that New Line has the rights to use? Just my two cents if anyone out there's readin' this! (And and bring back David Warner in the same role! ;-D)
Our favorite horror movie of the year THE SIGNAL is now available on DVD everywhere courtesy of Magnolia Home Entertainment! The indie flick is broken up into 3 segments, each from the perspective of a main character (and each helmed by a different director) as they deal with the madness that surrounds them when a mysterious signal beings transmitting all over the city of Terminus transforms normal people into killers! We had posted a news story about this several months ago, but now thankfully Paramount Home Entertainment has finally confirmed it! The hit series DEXTER: SEASON TWO will be released on DVD on August 19th, 2008, just in time for the premiere of SEASON THREE on Showtime. We've also heard that recent Icons interviewee KEITH GORDON will be directing the first episode of SEASON THREE. Gordon helmed several episodes of DEXTER previously, so his return doesn't come as a surprise. No DVD cover image or special features announced yet for the boxed set, but it's definitely coming on August 19th. We'll keep you posted on more when we hear it!
SHOCK's Ryan Rotten caught up with Michael Felsher (who's produced the supplemental material on several horror DVD releases) at this past weekend's LA FANGO show. Felsher is currently working with MGM to bring us a new and improved DVD edition of Stan Winston's directorial debut PUMPKINHEAD. Felsher told SHOCK that he's hard at work on new interviews with PUMPKINHEAD actors Lance Henriksen and Brian Bremer (who plays Bunt), as well as Tom Woodruff (who played PUMPKINHEAD) and Alec Gillis over at Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (both protégés of Stan Winston). The DVD release is still a ways off from a set date, but it's definitely coming and we'll keep you posted on when!

At this past weekend's LA FANGO show, the Anchor Bay Entertainment table debuted quite a cool little item. For display was the new MASTERS OF HORROR SEASON TWO boxed set, which will feature all 13 episodes of the Showtime series. (And include all of the existing discs special features.) While last year's set came in the amazing mausoleum box (I still stare at it on my counter), the new boxed set will house all 13 episodes inside a human skull! Of course, I didn't have my camera handy at the con, but thankfully Ryan Rotten over at Shock Till You Drop did! So below is one of his pics of the new boxed set. The front cover image for the upcoming expanded DARK CITY: DIRECTOR'S CUT DVD has been posted on DVD Active's website! The highly underrated sci-fi cult-classic, directed by Alex Proyas (THE CROW) hits DVD stands on July 29th, 2008. A Blu-Ray disc is set for that date as well. Earlier today, we posted a story about the highly underrated and unbelievably talented filmmaker Larry Fessenden landing the gig to direct an episode of NBC's upcoming horror series FEAR ITSELF. Now, the official Glass Eye Pix site has posted the DVD artwork for both versions of Fessenden's latest movie THE LAST WINTER. When I say both versions, it's because Blockbuster Video has an exclusive deal to release THE LAST WINTER on May 20th. It'll be available everywhere on July 29th. The flick stars Ron Perlman, James LeGros, Connie Britton, Kevin Corrigan and Jamie Harrold. Check out the DVD art below, along with the theatrical trailer!

Media Blasters provided FANGORIA with the specs on the upcoming DVD release of MACHINE GIRL (which we first reported on HERE), due out June 3rd. The article explains "Written and directed by Noboru Iguchi with makeup FX by Yoshihiro (EXTE) Nishimura, the movie stars Minase Yashiro as a high-school girl whose brother is killed by a gang of bullies under the employ of a ninja yakuza family. When she herself is left minus an arm after an encounter with the baddies, she has her missing limb replaced with a machine and teams up with a chainsaw-wielding woman to seek revenge." The trailer for the new giallo "DARKNESS SURROUNDS ROBERTA" is available on YouTube. The film was directed by Giovanni Pianigiani (RED MIDNIGHT) from a script co-written by Bruno Di Marcello and features genre vets Eileen Daily (RAZOR BLADE SMILE), Raine Brown (100 TEARS) and Joe Zaso (BARRICADE). We recently did a FIRST LOOK review of this documentary THE SHARK IS STILL WORKING, which is a definitive look at JAWS and it's legacy. Seriously, this is one of the most extensive and well put together documentaries for any film, and it was made with such love & care by the filmmakers. They've just posted a brand new trailer for it. Cool thing about this? It's narrated by PERCY RODRIGUES, the same voice from the original JAWS 1 and 2 trailers! Everyone involved in the first JAWS is in this. Check it out!!!

We were in the office of Stuart Gordon today working on Rob G's Psycho Documentary. I asked Stuart if I was ever going to be replacing my worn out VHS tape with something restored, widescreen and BEAUTIFUL. Stuart Gordon says we can finally expect the "From Beyond" restored edition DVD this September 11th.

Harry Penderecki's "People Pesticide" will finally see a DVD release in early June 2007, according to LMB Productions. Rights issues between Harry and producer Russ Clark were put to rest in a private settlement in January finally clearing the way for the film to hit the home video market.

"GODKILLER is split into two periods... there's the post nuke world of the graphic novel & illustrated film WALK AMONG US, and there's the pre-nuke world of SILENT WAR," Pizzolo explains. "So SILENT WAR is only a prequel insofar as it happens beforehand, but its events drive the WALK AMONG US story and many of the same characters appear in both. I'm super excited that the two stories can roll out together in this integrated way--everything about this project is unorthodox and crazy, hopefully everyone will enjoy the ride."
