REVIEW: A Look At THE WOLFMAN Blu-Ray!

When you look back on the cinematic exploits of lycanthropes, there is most certainly a big difference between a "werewolf" depicted on screen and "The Wolf Man". The original Wolf Man, as portrayed by Lon Chaney Jr in the 1941 Universal monster classic is unarguably the definitive "wolf man". Yes, there are amazing versions of the beast in everything from AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON to THE HOWLING to THE MONSTER SQUAD to DOG SOLDIERS to many, many more. But if you bring up that image to the left, the first thing you think is "THAT's the Wolf Man".

As far as the theatrical version of Joe Johnston's remake, all I wanted was an old-school gothic monster movie with a kick-ass version of the monster I'd grown up loving. And sure enough, whenever Benicio Del Toro graced the screen in full make-up, literally tearing people limb from limb, I thought "Holy sh*t... THAT is the Wolf Man!"

Despite it's few plot inconsistencies most likely caused by numerous re-edits, THE WOLFMAN is one of the better remakes of a classic property. While the story is slightly tweaked from the original version (including setting this one in the 1890's as opposed to the 40's), the basic premise is similar enough. In this version, Larry Talbot is a traveling actor who's been estranged from his family since a psychologically damaging incident from his childhood. He returns home after learning of the disappearance and murder of his brother. He's attacked by the same beast and later starts going on his own nighttime extra curricular activities.

Emily Blunt plays Gwen Conliffe, the object of Larry's affections and also widow to his recently deceased brother. Anthony Hopkins plays the senior Talbot.

Benicio Del Toro playing Larry Talbot and the Wolfman seems like perfect casting, especially considering the actor's resemblance to Lon Chaney Jr. However, in the theatrical version, his performance (or as some reviewers have argued, his lack of one) is by far the weakest link. The director's cut however fixes that, so anyone disappointed with Talbot's lack of character development should be satisfied with his portrayal (now more in tact) in this new version.

The director's cut clocks in at a solid 2 hours. It's most notable is the first 20-30 minutes, which almost feel like a completely different movie. In this version, rather then send a letter, Gwen travels to meet with Larry backstage after a London performance of Hamlet and informs him in person of his brother's disappearance. After much debate, primarily out of fear of seeing his father again, Larry hops on a train and heads back home. On the train ride, he encounters Max von Sydow (!) who gives him the infamous wolf's head cane. While to the average movie-goer, this may seem slowly paced, it's fine for the gothic tone this film is trying to emulate. There are other little additions sprinkled all the way through out which make the director's cut a more complete movie, but be forewarned, Del Toro doesn't turn into the Wolfman for the first time until the hour mark. It's a tough call to say which version is "better". As a diehard Wolfman fan, I'm just thrilled to have both. The theatrical cut moves at a brisk pace, but if you have the patience and desire to watch a more deliberately slow paced old-school horror movie, then you'll enjoy all the extra goodies in the director's cut.

The Blu-Ray sports plenty of great special features. There are a handful of deleted scenes, the most notable is when the Wolfman invades a costume party and no one suspects the threat of this party crasher. It's a great and humorous scene to watch on it's own, but I can understand how it doesn't exactly fit in the middle of the London rooftop chase scene as it currently stands in the movie. There are also 2 alternate endings, both of which are interesting but inferior to the one that ended up in the final film.

The first featurette on the disc is Return Of The Wolfman, a basic behind the scenes and interview montage segment that covers not only the production of the film, but the history of the Universal monster movies. It's pretty straight forward stuff, but the real gold is the next two featurettes which focus on the Wolfman himself. The Beast Maker is a great, great segment with make-up FX legend Rick Baker talking about his love of the character and how he set about updating it for this new remake. Of note is the test footage (Rick Baker made himself up as the Wolfman for these clips) which shows his ideas for doing the transformation practically! Why they opted to go with CGI transformations after getting this little tease of what Baker had in store for us will forever be one of those studio mysteries. Alas, hopefully Baker will get a chance to do another werewolf movie one day and fully realize the vision he started here. Also cool are dozens of various early designs we get to see for the Wolfman. Del Toro even insisted that some of the fake body parts be made edible so he could really get down and dirty and eat some flesh while behind that mask. The next featurette Transformation Secrets focuses on the CGI FX of the movie. (Some shots surprisingly I didn't even realize were CG which is a credit to the work done here.) While I'm sure myself and other fans would've loved to have seen Baker's practical transformations, the work done here is among the best I've seen for a movie of this scale.

The Wolfman Unleashed is a great featurette that focuses on the stunt work and action set pieces from the film. It's neat to see video cam footage of stuntman Spencer Wilding in full Wolfman gear jumping from rooftops and running at incredible speeds on moving mats. Also, after watching this, it seems fairly obvious that while I'm sure Benicio is there for the majority of the close-up shots, Spencer seems to have played the Wolfman for a considerable amount of the movie.

If you missed THE WOLFMAN in theaters... shame on you!

In all seriousness, this is a great package. Not only to see two different versions of the movie, but for the features which really are excellent. The disc is worth it alone just for the Rick Baker segment. Recommended. - Robg.

DVD/Blu-Ray Releases for October 13, 2009

Another big day for digital releases of horror films.

Perhaps the most anticipated DVD of the bunch is the long-awaited THE STEPFATHER, the Terry O'Quinn cult classic that has only been available by way of bootleg until now. Fans can finally purchase a legitimate copy, that boasts several extras. Another oldie garnering its first official release is HARDWARE. If you're looking for new scares, DRAG ME TO HELL also comes out today. For the kids, there's the animated KONG: RETURN TO THE JUNGLE. The latter three are also available as Blu-Ray discs.

On the Blu-Ray front, THE CRAFT will see its first releases on the hi-def format.

DVD/Blu-Ray Releases for Oct. 6, 2009

The Chinese proverbs warns you, "May your life be interesting," and today sure is an interesting day for DVD and Blu-Ray releases, to say the least.

This week sees the DVD releases of the much lauded THE CHILDREN, as well as a pair of remakes, one long shelved, one a SyFy version of a Stephen King adaptation that's being remade elsewhere, neither much called for. Yes, Oct. 6 sees the release of IT'S ALIVE and CHILDREN OF THE CORN.

For those with Blu-Ray players, Takashi Miike's deceptively vicious AUDITION sees its re-release in the high-def form. Miike's Japanese, and I can personally affirm that the Chinese proverb doesn't apply to this one. Audition Blu Ray At least not until it's killer ending, which should shock and disgust like few others.

ICONS EXCLUSIVE: The Original GRACE Short Film - WITH & Without Commentary!

It's no secret that ICONS OF FRIGHT has had a long history with filmmaker Paul Solet and his movie GRACE. We've been firm supporters of this talented up and coming writer & director since we first met him at a Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors show back in 2005 and we were there to help out when the time came for him to make his short film version of GRACE back in 2006. Since then (as the story goes), the fine gents over at Ariescope stepped in and helped get the feature length film made. With GRACE: "The Movie" now out & available everywhere on DVD and Blu-Ray, we thought it'd be fun to go back and look at the original 6 minute short film that started it all. Not only that but we also put together a second version of the GRACE short film with a commentary track by writer/director Paul Solet and FX artist (and ICONS scribe) Jason Alvino. I can not wait until October 6th! Because the DVD and Blu-Ray of Michael Dougherty's TRICK 'R TREAT finally comes out and I plan on watching it every day until Halloween night! Teaser Trailer For Short Film 2:22!

Filmmaker Steven Shea from Abyssmal Entertainment just sent over a few pics and the teaser trailer for his latest short film 2:22. ICONS actually spoke to Shea back when he was promoting his feature HOODOO FOR VOODOO (Read that HERE). 2:22 was written & directed by Shea and stars Tara Lightfoot as Vicki Palmer, whom after an incredible night out with her girlfriends is wrenched from her peaceful slumber and cast mercilessly into a world spinning out of control. Writhing half naked on the cold porcelain tile of her bathroom floor, Vickie desperately tries to piece together the tragic turn of events that has twisted her once carefree life into a nightmare of pain and suffering. But when she discovers the truth, will it be too late to save her from eternal damnation?

New Red-Band Trailer For THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

It'll be on video on demand starting October 1st and then bowing for a limited theatrical release on October 30th, Ti West's much talked about new film THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL now has a brand spanking new red-band trailer courtesy of Hulu. Check it out below, along with a few news stills and the film synopsis!

From writer-director Ti West comes THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, a satanic thriller set in the 1980s starring Jocelin Donahue (JT Petty’s forthcoming THE BURROWERS), indie ingénue Greta Gerwig (HANNAH TAKES THE STAIRS, BAGHEAD), Tom Noonan (SNOW ANGELS, MANHUNTER), Mary Woronov (EATING RAOUL, THE DEVIL’S REJECTS), AJ Bowen (THE SIGNAL) and Dee Wallace (E.T., Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN).

Sam (Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there is no baby. Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (cult actors Noonan and Woronov) are the older couple who lure Sam out to their creeky Victorian mansion deep in the woods, just in time for a total lunar eclipse. Megan (Gerwig) is Sam’s best friend, who gives her a ride out to the house, and reluctantly leaves her there despite suspecting that something is amiss. Victor (Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloody fight for her life....

TERMINATOR: SALVATION DVD/Blu-Ray December 1st!

A few days ago, we posted a listing of the features you can expect on the upcoming TERMINATOR: SALVATION DVD and Blu-Ray release. Now, Warner Brothers has provided us with an official release date: December 1st, 2009.

The single disc DVD will feature the original theatrical trailer along with both Widescreen and Fill Screen versions of the movie. It looks like the Blu-Ray's got all the good though including both theatrical and director's cut versions of the movie, Maximum Movie Mode - An McG video commentary similar to what Zach Snyder did for WATCHMEN where the director hosts in front of the movie as it plays, and much, much more. The latest in the TERMINATOR franchise is directed by McG and stars Christian Bale as John Conner, Sam Worthington, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anton Yelchin, Common, Moon Bloodgood and Michael Ironside.

The Gate: Monstrous Special Edition
The Gate debuts in a Special Edition DVD this October from Lionsgate. Starring Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies), Kelly Rowan (TV's "The O.C.") and Jennifer Irwin (HBO's "Eastbound & Down"), the film is a terrifying tale about three children who accidently open a gate to hell which releases demons from an ancient civilization. The Gate: Monstrous Special Edition is loaded with new special features including audio commentary with the director, writer and special effects supervisor, plus two featurettes that examine the filmmaking process and the original theatrical trailer.

They are here and they want to meet the neighbors. After an old tree is removed from the ground, three teenagers come across a special rock with a beautiful crystalline center in their backyard. The rock enthralls them and they dig up the family's lawn in a search for more of the precious stones. However, instead of stones, they find The Gate: a hidden underground chamber that holds the secret of centuries and the vengeance of eternity. Their actions inadvertently liberate a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from the hole and what follows is a classic battle between good and evil as the three kids struggle to overcome a nightmarish hell that is literally taking over the Earth.

ORPHAN DVD/Blu-Ray Details! Arriving October 27th!

DVDActive is reporting that ORPHAN will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on October 27th. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (HOUSE OF WAX) from a script by David Johnson (based on the story by Alex Mace), ORPHAN stars Peter Sarsgaard, Vera Farmiga, CCH Pounder and Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther.

As far as bonus material for the discs, DVD Active states, "The only extra material on the DVD release will be additional scenes and an alternate ending. The Blu-ray release will include those scenes, along with a Mama's Little Devils: Bad Seeds, Evil Kids and Orphan featurette, and a digital copy of the film."

Tim Sullivan's DRIFTWOOD Premiering on CHILLER 9/11 @ 10PM!

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY: After completing production on the horror comedy 2001 MANIACS, an admittedly over-the-top, decidedly non-PC “Splatstick”, co-writer/director Tim Sullivan found himself disturbed by a post-Columbine trend in America; the proliferation of privately owned and run “Attitude Adjustment Camps” for youths deemed troubled and problematic by their parents. Though some youth, in fact, may require severe response to their crimes and violence (i.e. hardened youth offenders who actually find their way into the government run juvenile prison system), the psychology (and business plan) behind these “Adjustment Camps” is to play upon the fears of wealthy parents unable to relate to their teenager that Little Johnny’s troubling behavior may actually be the budding seeds of the next teen “Columbine Killer”. The horrid part is that the definition of ‘troubling’ could easily be that Junior listens to AFI and HIM, reads FANGORIA magazine, wears black, has piercings in unseen places, and (horror of all horrors) may actually prefer the same sex to the girl next door. Thus, on a regular basis, kids who just don’t click with Mom and Dad are being shipped to attitude adjustment camps all over the USA, where they are brutalized, programmed and in some extreme cases, actually murdered (as recently exemplified by the headline making death of a young boy in such an Attitude Adjustment Camp in Florida). The greatest nightmare of all— If Little Johnny is under the age of 18, he’s got no legal rights whatsoever, and if Mom and Dad sign him over, he’s a prisoner till he turns 18. And so, with 2001 MANIACS and SNOOP DOGG’S HOOD OF HORROR under his belt, Sullivan enlisted writing partner Chris Kobin to tackle another type of horror for his follow-up. A complete flip in vibe from the broad tone of his first two features, DRIFTWOOD is a character driven supernatural thriller that has been described as STAND BY ME meets GHOST STORY. It’s Sullivan’s way of expressing his driving philosophy (as expressed in his first producing effort, the cult classic DETROIT ROCK CITY) that no one should be forced to be what they are not, for if and when that does occur, the real nightmares truly do take shape… Welcome to DRIFTWOOD.

Sullivan is currently editing the follow-up to 2001 MANIACS (entitled BEVERLY HELLBILLYS), which will have its US premiere at the American Film Market this November.

Whoa! The full length trailer for the eagerly anticipated Spanish sequel [REC] 2 can now be seen over on THIS website! The original [REC] served as the (practically shot-for-shot) basis of last year's QUARANTINE. The follow-up is once again directed & scripted by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plazo. Blu-Ray Editions Of THE MONSTER SQUAD, CUJO, FRAILTY & MY BLOOD VALENTINE Coming!

Lionsgate has announced a slew of new Blu-Ray discs all hitting store shelves on November 24th. Below's a breakdown of titles with their respective features:

FRAILTY Synopsis:
Fenton Meeks approaches an FBI agent one night claiming he knows the identity of a vicious serial killer. The FBI agent is unimpressed until Fenton reveals that the killer is his younger brother Adam. Fenton recounts in a series of flashbacks, how he and his brother, grew up in a very loving family, raised by their widowed father. All that changed, the day his father awoke, believing he had been visited by an angel and given a mission to destroy "demons" - seemingly normal people who walk the earth as pure evil. Fenton's father and brother Adam swear to carry out this 'divine' mission. Out of loyalty however, Fenton refused to go to the police, until now. Believing Fenton's startling tale of the slaughter of innocents, the FBI agent follows him to the family's rose garden only to be surprised that neither evil nor innocence are what they seem. The Blu-ray Disc is presented in newly remastered 1080P High Definition Widescreen and features 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio and French 5.1 Dolby Digital. Special features include three separate audio commentaries, "Anatomy of a scene," a "making-of" featurette, deleted scenes, storyboards and a photo gallery.

Lionsgate brings a trio of horror favorites to Blu-ray Disc for the first time on November 24th. Cujo: 25th Anniversary Edition starring Dee Wallace (E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial), plus cult classics The Monster Squad: 20th Anniversary Edition and My Bloody Valentine: Special Edition all make their debut on Blu-ray.

CUJO: 25th Anniversary Edition Synopsis:
Based on the frightening best-selling book from the king of horror himself, Stephen King, Cujo has become a film classic. In a bizarre case of nature versus humanity, a Saint Bernard infected with rabies from a diseased bat attacks a mother and her son. When the family becomes trapped in their car, they must depend on their wits to defeat the crazed canine. The Blu-ray Disc is presented in 1080P High Definition 16x9 Widescreen and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Blu-ray Disc special features include audio commentary with Director Lewis Teague and the three part documentary, "Dog Days: The Making of Cujo."

THE MONSTER SQUAD: 25th Anniversary Edition Synopsis:
Count Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Gillman - adjourn to earth in search of a powerful amulet that will grant them power to rule the world. However, a bunch of kids regarded by their peers as losers and outsiders uncover the devious plan and prepare for a counter strike. Now, our heroes - the Monster Squad - are the only ones daring to stand in their way. The Blu-ray Disc is presented in 1080P High Definition 16x9 Widescreen and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Blu-ray Disc special features include a five-part retrospective featurette Monster Squad Forever!, a classic interview with the Monster himself A Conversation with Frankenstein, deleted scenes, an animated storyboard sequence and more!

MY BLOODY VALENTINE: Special Edition Synopsis:
On Valentine's Day 20 years before, an explosion of methane gas took the lives of a group of coal miners working in the Hanniger Mine near the small town of Valentine Bluffs. The accident occurred because supervisors left their posts to attend the annual Valentine's Day dance. A year later, Harry Warden, the only survivor of the accident, retaliated by killing the two supervisors and leaving a terrifying warning never to hold another Valentine's Day dance. After two decades have passed, despite warnings, a group of young adults start preparations for another dance. When a blood-soaked heart arrives at the police station, accompanied by an ominous message, the dance is canceled. However, a Valentine party is held in its place at the coal mine and it isn't long before people begin dying violently. It appears Warden has returned to punish those who did not heed his warning. The Blu-ray Disc is presented in 1080P High Definition 16x9 Widescreen and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Blu-ray Disc special features include the featurette "Bloodlust: My Bloody Valentine and the Rise of the Slasher Film," "Bloodlines: An interactive Horror Film History" and deleted footage.

DARK DAYS Are Coming! 30 DAYS OF NIGHT Sequel Nabs Director!

Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Ben Ketai is set to direct 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: DARK DAYS, the official sequel to David Slade's 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. Based on the original comic book sequel DARK DAYS, writer/co-creator Steve Niles also penned the script with Ketai. Ketai has experience in the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT universe having worked on the web series "30 DAYS OF NIGHT: BLOOD TRAILS" and "30 DAYS OF NIGHT: DUST TO DUST." The character of Stella Oleson (played by Melissa George in the first film) plays a major role in the story of DARK DAYS, but according to BD will be recast for this direct-to-DVD sequel. Shooting begins tentatively in October in Vancouver. More when we hear it!

Magnolia Acquires Bong Joon-Ho's Critically Acclaimed MOTHER!

New York – August 31st, 2009 – The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Bong Joon-Ho’s MOTHER, which debuted at Cannes in Un Certain Regard earlier this year to stellar reviews. Gearing up for a Bong Joon-ho retrospective, Magnolia has also acquired BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE, Bong’s 2000 debut which was previously unreleased stateside. Magnolia had a big hit in 2007 with Bong’s THE HOST, and is excited to be the American home for the filmmaker, one of the most dynamic and exciting on the world stage today.

MOTHER is a unique thriller about a mother’s primal love for her son. It stars Kim Hye-ja (in what critics are calling one of the best performances of the year) as a mother who throws herself body and soul into proving the innocence of her son who she believes to be wrongly accused of murder. The Korean selection for this year’s Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, MOTHER continues its prestigious run on the festival circuit this fall—it is an official selection in both the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Magnolia plans on releasing the film theatrically sometime early next year.

BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE is a dark comedy about an out-of-work college professor who is driven mad by the sound of barking dogs in his apartment building, eventually resorting to kidnapping them. Never released stateside, Bong’s directorial debut is a must-see for fans as it has hints of things to come with his later works, especially THE HOST.

LAKE MUNGO Joins AFTER DARK HORRORFEST 4 Line-Up!

After Dark Films have announced LAKE MUNGO as their 3rd acquisition for the upcoming HORRORFEST 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR, the 4th of the annual festival set to hit theaters on January 29th, 2010. Rob Zombie Talks Alternate Director's Cut Of HALLOWEEN 2!

We recently sat down for a roundtable interview with Rob Zombie to discuss all things HALLOWEEN 2 and among one of the topics that came up was the "unused" trailer, which features snippets of footage NOT in the final theatrical version. Considering the time restraints on the editing process, I asked Zombie if the version of HALLOWEEN 2 opening in theaters this weekend was his complete vision, or if there was a longer or alternate "director's cut" with more of the stuff from the trailers. Here's what he had to say:

"The thing is – editing is a crucial time and when you get rushed through that process, you’re never 100 percent sure that you’ve got exactly the perfect take of every actor, or the perfect moment because there’s so much footage to go through and so you do your best to do it with the time that you have."

"As far as a longer cut for the director’s cut, there is another version of the movie that’s very, very different that will probably be the director’s cut. There were 2 ways we could cut the movie. The way we cut it for the theatrical, Laurie Strode’s character is the main difference in the two. (In the theatrical) She’s holding it together, getting her life together and it starts spiraling downward. In the other version, she’s an incredible mess and gets worse. She never has any good moments, she’s just messed up, she’s lashing out at everyone, she’s horrible. Messed up on drugs, she’s just completely spun out through the whole movie. It makes for a real challenging movie to watch and I feel like I don’t know if fans would’ve embraced so much darkness."

"Everything’s the same in that version except for her. There’s other scenes with her, and mostly with Annie. Her relationship with Annie is horrible and they’re at each other’s throats through the whole movie. They are not in the theatrical version."

So we can probably look forward to a DVD with an alternate, "darker" cut. I'm not sure I myself as a fan could embrace the idea of Laurie Strode being unsympathetic, which is what the above scenario sounds like to me. While brief, I appreciated her estranged relationship with Annie in the theatrical cut of HALLOWEEN 2.

This past Tuesday, we reported that BEST BUY exclusively release the Blu-Ray edition of Paul Solet's GRACE, almost a whole month before it's official release date on September 15th. The movie itself looks beautiful in hi-definition and the Blu-Ray (as well as the upcoming DVD) are brimming with tons of great special features, but we felt obligated to let you in on a slight error with the disc. The special features are not in the appropriate order.

Granted, as a paying consumer, you can watch the bonus features any which way you please. However, ICONS own Adam Barnick was responsible for all the supplemental material on the GRACE disc. What was originally intended as a feature length long documentary was instead divided up into 5 featurettes. (6 if you include Jake Hamilton's featurette from SUNDANCE) These features are meant to be played in a certain order to maintain a "feature length" documentary feel.

So if you pick up the Blu-Ray, THIS is the order you should watch the features in. (As listed on the back of the box):

TRAIN Comes To DVD November 17th!

TRAIN (a very loose remake of TERROR TRAIN) starring Thora Birch and Derek Magyar, written and directed by Gideon Raff will finally hit DVD on November 17th courtesy of Lionsgate. Below is the synopsis for the movie, as well as the DVD cover.

"Touring Eastern Europe with her college wrestling team, Alex (Thora Birch - American Beauty) attends a debauched late-night party that causes her and several teammates to miss their train to Odessa. Her coach is furious, but a mysterious woman offers the group a ride on an alternative train. The coach agrees, and the athletes, exhausted and hung over, gratefully climb aboard. CULVER CITY, CALIF. (August 17, 2009) – The master of ballyhoo who became a brand name in movie horror with his outrageous audience participation gimmicks will be remembered on October 20 when the William Castle Film Collection debuts from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE). The set features eight of the legendary producer/director’s most notable films, including The Tingler (1959), 13 Ghosts (1960), Homicidal (1961), Mr. Sardonicus (1961), and Strait-Jacket (1964). Also included in the collection are Zotz! (1962), The Old Dark House (1963), and 13 Frightened Girls (1963), each making their DVD debuts. The extensive bonus materials include original theatrical openings, alternate sequences, vintage footage and original theatrical trailers, as well as two episodes of the television series, Ghost Story produced by William Castle.

Also included as a bonus feature, is Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story (2007), the acclaimed documentary on William Castle by director Jeffrey Schwarz that won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2007 AFI Film Festival. The film features archival interviews with John Landis (An American Werewolf in London), John Waters (Pink Flamingos), Budd Boetticher (The Tall T), Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) and legendary mime Marcel Marceau. The five-disc William Castle Film Collection will be available for $80.95 SRP.

About William Castle: Intrigued by the circus of Barnum and Bailey , New York stage plays, radio and the movies, William Castle (1914 - 1977) knew what he wanted to do with his life and spent most of his teenage years working on the stage in a number of jobs ranging from set building to acting. He left Broadway for Hollywood at the age of 23, going on to direct his first film (The Chance of a Lifetime) six years later.

Castle honed his craft over the next decade turning out every manner of film. He also worked as an assistant to director Orson Welles, doing much of the second unit location work for Welles’ noir classic The Lady from Shanghai, starring Rita Hayworth. Castle had a reputation for getting the work done, and eventually decided to produce and direct his own pictures. The first, Macabre, boasted ad lines like “See it with someone who can carry you home!” and “If it frightens you to death, you’ll be buried free of charge!” The hype worked and Castle became famous for directing films with many gimmicks, which were ambitiously promoted, despite being reasonably low budget B-movies. By the mid-60s, he abandoned the gimmicks and went on to produce the Roman Polanski classic Rosemary’s Baby (1968). His autobiography was entitled “Step Right Up! I’m Gonna Scare the Pants Off America .”

The Tingler (1959)

Legendary horror star Vincent Price (Edward Scissorhands) stars in The Tingler, the terrifying story of a docile creature that lives in the human spinal cord. It becomes activated by fright and can only be destroyed by screaming. Castle promoted the film with the gimmick of “Percepto,” where audiences would actually feel the sensations of the actors on the screen. To achieve this, theaters wired select seats with tiny motors underneath that would vibrate during key scenes in the movie. The audience would get a “tingling” sensation and were encouraged to “Scream - scream for your lives.” The Tingler has a running time of approximately 82 minutes and is not rated.

13 Ghosts (1960)

Castle aggressively promoted this film with floats going up and down Hollywood Blvd. with “ghosts” riding along, holding signs, touting the movie. He named the gimmick created for 13 Ghosts “Illusion-O,” which was a special hand-held piece of cardboard with two transparent colored strips, one red and one blue. If you wanted to see the ghosts in the film, you looked through one, but if you were too frightened, you could look through the other and they weren’t visible. The film promised and delivered “13 Times the Thrills! 13 Times the Chills! 13 Times the Fun!” in the story of a family who inherits a haunted house, but discover a special pair of goggles that allows them to see their ghostly tormentors. The film starred Martin Milner (TV’s “Adam-12”) and Margaret Hamilton (The Wizard of Oz). 13 Ghosts has a running time of 85 minutes and is not rated.

Homicidal (1961)

In Homicidal, the brutal stabbing murder of a justice-of-the-peace sparks an investigation of the dark family secrets in a sleepy small town. Castle promoted the film with a “Fright Break,” a 45-second timer during the film’s climax as the heroine approached a house harboring the sadistic killer. The voiceover advised the audience of the time remaining in which they could leave the theatre and receive a full refund if they were too frightened to see the rest of the film. To ensure filmgoers did not opt for the refund, Castle instituted the “Coward’s Corner.” Patrons were expected to follow yellow footsteps up the theater aisle, bathed in a yellow light and sit in a yellow cardboard booth in the theater lobby. Theaters had a nurse offering a blood-pressure test, a recording blaring “Watch the chicken! Watch him shiver in Coward’s Corner,” and required walkouts to sign a yellow “Coward’s Certificate” card stating, “I am a bona fide coward.” Needless to say, very few filmgoers opted out of the screening. Homicidal has a running time of approximately 87 minutes and is not rated.

Mr. Sardonicus (1961)

In this gothic tale set in 1880 London , a Baron’s face is frozen into a permanently grotesque smile after digging up his father’s grave to retrieve a winning lottery ticket accidently left in his pocket. The gimmick allowed audiences to vote in a “Punishment Poll” during the climax of the film where Castle himself appears on screen to explain to the audience their options. Each member of the audience was given a card with a glow-in-the-dark thumb they could hold either up or down to decide if Mr. Sardonicus would be cured or die at the end of the film. Supposedly, no audience ever offered mercy and the villain was always punished. Mr. Sardonicus has a running time of approximately 89 minutes and is not rated.

Zotz! (1962)

Tom Poston (TV’s “Newhart”) finds a Zotz coin and discovers its awesome powers. After attempting to share its secret with the US government (where he is brushed off as a lunatic), his discovery captures the interest of foreign agents, who attempt to steal it. To promote the film, Castle provided each filmgoer with a “magic” coin which, unfortunately, did absolutely nothing. Zotz! has a running time of approximately 87 minutes and is not rated.

Frightened Girls! (1963)

Castle launched a worldwide hunt for the prettiest girls from different countries to cast in 13 Frightened Girls!. The stunt helped generate publicity for the film about the thirteen daughters of international diplomats in a Swiss boarding school, who stir up trouble when they mess in the diplomatic affairs of their parents and a Russian spy is discovered murdered. 13 Frightened Girls! has a running time of 89 minutes and is not rated.

The Old Dark House (1963)

Tom Poston (Zotz!) was again cast by Castle in this project about an American car salesman in England who receives a mysterious invitation from an old, eccentric millionaire to visit the house in which he lives with his twin brother. The Old Dark House has a running time of approximately 86 minutes and is not rated.

Strait-Jacket (1964)

Advised by his financial backers to eliminate the gimmicks, Castle hired Hollywood’s legendary Joan Crawford (The Women, Our Dancing Daughters) to star as an ax-murderess in this story of a mother, who, after a 20 year stay in an insane asylum for killing her husband and his mistress, returns to her home and grown daughter. While trying to re-connect with her daughter, Diane Baker (The Best of Everything, Marnie) the mother’s behavior raises suspicions about whether she is still a dangerously deranged killer. At the last minute, Castle had cardboard axes handed out to patrons and sent Crawford on a nation-wide promotional tour of theaters showing the film. Straight-Jacket has a running time of approximately 93 minutes and is not rated.

Warner Brothers has set October 6th as the official release date for Michael Dougherty's eagerly anticipated Halloween themed horror masterpiece TRICK 'R TREAT. I love it because now I'll be able to watch it every single day leading up to October 31st! Below is the cover artwork for the Blu-Ray, along with a listing of special features. It looks like the majority will be exclusive to the Blu-Ray.

Warner Brothers has released a handful of new publicity stills for their upcoming release THE HILLS RUN RED. Directed by Dave Parker from a script by David J. Schow, THE HILLS RUN RED hits store shelves on September 29th. Check out the trailer right HERE! And you can check out high resolution versions of the pics below by clicking on them.

Synopsis: A film fanatic's obsession with finding a complete print of a classic slasher movie leads him and two friends into the backwoods where the film was shot. They realize too late that filming never ended -- the movie's star, the deformed, murderous BABY FACE, and his twisted family continue to film and kill unsuspecting victims. Now our heroes must survive the nightmarish onslaught or become part of the movie forever.

PSYCHO IV Alumni Join THE PSYCHO LEGACY Documentary!

Despite recently completing the first rough cut of the independently produced documentary project THE PSYCHO LEGACY, the crew here at ICONS are still finding more PSYCHO movie alumni and incorporating them into the film. The 2 latest additions are the ones we're most excited about. We're proud to announce that both Henry Thomas and Olivia Hussey have both been interviewed for THE PSYCHO LEGACY doc! Both actors portrayed Norman Bates and Mrs. Bates (respectively) in PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING. Check out pics of them with PSYCHO LEGACY director Robg. (yours truly) below!

Since the project is an independent production, cable and DVD dates are still being ironed out, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we have solid dates locked!

THE WOLF MAN: LEGACY DVD Delayed Until 2010?!

It appears THE WOLF MAN: SPECIAL EDITION DVD, the latest as part of their "Universal Legacy Series" has been pushed out of it's original September 15th release slot and will now be released sometime in February/March of 2010 - No doubt to coincide with the theatrical release of the new WOLFMAN remake, currently set for a February 12th, 2010 release date. Paris Hilton Guest Starring On... SUPERNATURAL?!

Stranger things have happened to the Winchester boys... but according to E! Online, Paris Hilton will be making a guest appearance on SUPERNATURAL, Episode 5 of Season 5. (New season starts September 10th, Season 4 hits DVD & Blu-Ray on September 1st!)

I suppose it's no surprise considering Hilton has made genre appearances before in both HOUSE OF WAX and REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. E! Online says, "Details about Hilton's role are being kept under wraps, but we are advised that freaking out is not necessary. A source close to the show tells us: "The fans should trust [show runner] Eric Kripke." (We've heard the storyline, and when you see it you will die. It's awesome.)"

EDGES OF DARKNESS DVD Artwork! Out September 22nd!

Actor Lee Perkins wrote in to share with us the front & back cover DVD artwork for his latest flick EDGES OF DARKNESS. Written & directed by Blaine Cade & Jason Horton, EDGES OF DARKNESS tells the tales of three groups of survivors held up in an apartment complex during a zombie apocalypse. With their food supply dwindling, a vampire couple kidnaps a young girl. They intend to bleed her slowly to survive. Of course things don't go exactly has planned. Dean, an obsessed horror writer is hold up with his neglected wife, Dana. Dean keeps his sanity by burying himself in his writing. He installs a new processor to run his computer on their limited generator power, but soon finds out there's a high price to pay. Heather, a survival nut, rescues a young mother and her son from a horde of zombies. She takes them back to the complex. However, she soon discovers the mother and son are on the run from a group of renegade priests hell bent on destroying the boy.

TRUE BLOOD Renewed For 3rd Season!

THRfeed.com is reporting that several HBO shows have been renewed for new seasons, including the vampire drama hit TRUE BLOOD, which will now officially return for a 3rd season. The post says, "The freshly formed Sunday-night lineup has given HBO two consecutive hours of hit programming for the first time in years. "True Blood" in particular has managed to increase its audience with nearly every episode, giving the network its most-watched show since "The Sopranos.""

A longtime pet project of Zombie (he based it on his comic book), THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO, is an ultra-hip, wickedly funny fantasy that’s a colorful blend of Fritz the Cat, “Scooby-Doo,” “Ren and Stimpy,” and Santo wrestling flicks. El Superbeasto is “Adults Only” animation available on DVD for an SRP of $19.97 and Blu-ray™ for $34.98.

THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO is the twisted tale of El Superbeasto (voiced by Tom Papa), a former world class masked wrestler with super human strength, who now finds himself in the very ordinary capacity as producer/director/star of BeastoWorld Enterprises. But when he can, Beasto spends time fighting evil along with his with his super-sexy sister, Suzi X (Sheri Moon Zombie), in the spooky Monsterland. Our hefty hero faces his biggest battle when he struggles to stop the unholy marriage of foul-mouthed stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson) and the diabolical Dr. Satan (Paul Giamatti). Will all hell break loose or will our man save the day? The answer can only be found in The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, a depraved adventure with filthy comedy, ultra-violence, and some bad-ass theme songs!

DRAG ME TO HELL Comes To DVD October 20th!

Where the hell were you guys when Sam Raimi's DRAG ME TO HELL was playing in theaters?! You missed hands down his best film since EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN, so don't expect an EVIL DEAD 4 when you didn't support his latest horror effort in theaters where to the big wigs it counts!

Regardless, you can see what you missed as Moviefone's website revealed an October 20th release date for the DVD. No other info at this time, but as soon as we get feature specs and cover artwork, we'll post it!

DAMNATION, Latest Short From Fever Dreams!

DAMNATION is a new Fever Dreams short film that returns to the dark, violent universe depicted in the 2006 feature film, SHADOW: DEAD RIOT, a Derek Wan film starring Tony Todd (CANDY MAN, TV’s 24).

This time, WARDEN BRUTAWSKI is the judge, jury and executioner for a satanic slavery ring where innocent women are abducted, warehoused and sentenced to a fate worse than death! With the aid of his henchwoman ELSA, they rule the death row inmates with an iron fist and determine their final destinies with a twisted spin of the Wheel of Fate.

DAMNATION depicts the surreal and sedated exploits of an innocent young woman named JUSTINE; from her harrowing highway abduction and nightmarish incarceration to her diabolical sale on an internet auction block and involuntary casting in a demented movie!

JUSTINE faces a whirlwind obstacle course of humiliation, torture and dangerous, psychotic characters like THE DOCTOR, THE CANNIBAL, THE MOGUL and the chainsaw wielding SENOR SATANICO! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (Restored!) Comes To DVD October 13th!

One of the most revered slasher films of the 1980s comes home to Anchor Bay Entertainment as fans remember it… HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

It’s time to blow out the candles and sharpen the shish-kebab spears, because the classic 1980s’ slasher favorite Happy Birthday to Me is coming to DVD, courtesy Anchor Bay Entertainment. Street date is October 13, 2009, with a SRP of $14.98.

This edition of the film, however, has something missing from the previous DVD release does not – the film’s haunting orchestral score, as composed by Bo Harwood and Lance Rubin, which was NOT included on the first DVD release and which fans have been clamoring for.

2nd Teaser Poster For ALL ABOUT EVIL!

Below you'll find the second teaser poster for ALL ABOUT EVIL. You may remember the (awesome) premiere poster featured the film's star, Natasha Lyonne, covered in blood. (See that in our previous news post HERE!) This second poster showcases the hauntingly beautiful Jade and Nikita Ramsey who play "Veda" and "Vera"; killer twins who were institutionalized earlier in life after murdering their family at seven years of age. They are silent but deadly and were born knowing all about evil.

We're told there will be five more posters released over the next five months so that the collection will total seven, along with the first trailer once the official website goes live. We'll keep you posted on when that happens!

Indie Flick HUNTING SEASON To Premiere On VOD August 1st!

Filmmaker Nathan Wrann's indie horror movie debut HUNTING SEASON will be available for 'video on demand' as of August 1st. Check out the full press release below with all the details, as well as the trailer.

Connecticut based independent film production company Dalton Gang Productions recently closed a cable VOD distribution deal for its debut feature HUNTING SEASON. The brutal slasher-survivalist thriller will be premiering August 1st 2009 across the U.S, Canada and Puerto Rico through an agreement with Gravitas Ventures arranged by The Bosko Group. HUNTING SEASON will be on VOD for 90 days.

The Gravitas VOD deal will make the feature available to more than 13 million subscribers across the continental United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Gravitas programs 15 films per month to dozens of cable, satellite, and telco VOD providers including Charter Communications, DISH Network, RCN and Verizon FIOS.

HUNTING SEASON is the feature debut from director Nathan Wrann and Dalton Gang Productions. Husband and wife producing team, Nathan Wrann and Kimberly Dalton set out to create the horror movie they’d like to see — literate and coherent in plot, and brutal and unrelenting in tension. With HUNTING SEASON, they’ve hit the mark with a vengeance. Production began in the wet, hot summer of 2006 as they gathered their resources: a cast of 10 friends; access to13 acres of wooded property just outside New Haven, CT; 2 part time, crew members, a plastic-tip-of-the-shoestring budget and a large bucket of blood, sweat and tears. Despite these limitations Wrann and Dalton were able to realize their vision to the extent that Mr. Wrann calls HUNTING SEASON “A complete personal success.”

HUNTING SEASON’s plot follows 6 friends on a camping trip deep in the woods for, what should be, “the best weekend ever.” The good times take a turn for the worse when, after a tragic “accident,” a pair of sadistic hunters wreaks violent, bloody, unrelenting havoc on the stranded campers.

HUNTING SEASON is a brutal exploitation flick (consider yourself warned) inspired by, and paying homage to, those that came many years before it. The final product and subsequent national VOD release is a testament to the fact that a dedicated cast and crew and a writer/director with a clear artistic vision and integrity, can overcome the limitations of budget (less than $5,000) to create a movie scarier, more brutal and more engaging than many of those with far greater resources.

Clive Barker's DREAD Picked Up For AFTER DARK FILMS' HORRORFEST 4!

Just as word came back from our staffer at the San Diego Comic-Con that DREAD got picked up as the 2nd film in AFTER DARK FILMS' upcoming 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR fest, we got the official press release confirming the news. This means it'll hit theaters on January 29th, 2010. Here's the full release:

"After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon announces the latest addition to After Dark Films’ Horrorfest 4 lineup today in Hollywood . Anthony DiBlasi directs his own script of the eagerly anticipated Clive Barker tale, “DREAD,” which goes out to theatres January 29, 2010 as part of After Dark Films HorrorfestÒ4 “8 Films To Die For”.

DREAD is the second film in the Book of Blood franchise. The action follows three college students who set out to produce a documentary about fear, only to find themselves the subjects of an experiment in terror. DiBlasi, a producing partner of Barker’s on such films as Book of Blood and Midnight Meat Train, makes his directorial debut with DREAD, working from his own screenplay. Jackson Rathbone (Twilight Saga and The Last Airbender) stars alongside Shaun Evans (Boy A), Hanne Steen and Laura Donnelly.

Clive Barker is a versatile artist and pop culture icon who hardly needs introduction to legions of fans worldwide. An author, director and producer, the English born Barker is renowned for his horror fiction and fantasy writings. CHILD'S PLAY Blu-Ray Coming September 15th!

Well, MGM has found yet another way to milk ya for your hard earned cash. Remember that Special Edition DVD of CHILD'S PLAY that came out last year? Well, it's finally coming to Blu-Ray on September 15th. Sadly, it doesn't look as though there's anything new on it besides the features already present on the DVD edition. And yet again, the DVD producers have excluded director Tom Holland from this release. (I believe their excuse last time was there wasn't enough time to contact him? Well they had a year between the DVD and Blu-Ray, so what's the excuse this time?)

In The Graves, two inseparable sisters, Megan and Abby Graves, are taking one last wild road trip before Megan has to start a new job. The journey includes a trip through remote Arizona in search of a kitchy roadside attraction. Instead, Megan and Abby happen on Skull City Mine, a weather-beaten, abandoned mine town converted into a self-guided tour. What seems like a fun day in the sun turns into a mind-bending fight for survival against menaces both human and supernatural.

CHILDREN OF THE CORN Remake Airs On SyFy This September!

It appears the CHILDREN OF THE CORN remake will debut sometime in September (exact date still pending) on SyFy, before it gets an official DVD release courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. (Whom by the way, did a stellar job on the Blu-Ray for the original. Review coming soon!)

Donald Borchers, (producer on the original) wrote & directed this update based on the Stephen King novelette. It stars David Anders (HEROES), Kandyse McClure, Daniel Newman as Malachi, & DEXTER's Preston Bailey as Isaac. The first CHILDREN starred Peter Horton and Linda Hamilton and eventually went on to spawn 6 sequels! More details on the new film, including an air date & DVD details as soon as we hear it!

THE GATE: MONSTROUS SPECIAL EDITION DVD Coming October 6th!

While Alex Winter preps the upcoming 3D remake of THE GATE, Lionsgate is prepping a "monstrous special edition" DVD of the beloved classic horror gem to hit store shelves on October 6th! Last month, we reported that Universal was (finally!) releasing PHANTASM 2 on DVD on September 15th. Now, below you can take a peek at the DVD cover art. As of press time the only bonus feature will be the theatrical trailer. "Red-Band" Trailer For THE COLLECTOR!

But when he can, Beasto spends time fighting evil along with his with his super-sexy sister, Suzi X (Sheri Moon Zombie), in the spooky Monsterland. Our hefty hero faces his biggest battle when he struggles to stop the unholy marriage of foul-mouthed stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson) and the diabolical Dr. Satan (Paul Giamatti). Will all hell break loose or will our man save the day? UPDATE: Are The Right Subtitles On LET THE RIGHT ONE IN Yet?!

Several months back, we had posted an article with a side-by-side comparison of an early screener of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN along with the recently released DVD/Blu-Ray version from Magnolia Pictures. We were shocked to discover such a discrepancy in the subtitles from version to version.

While we're sure this kind of loss in translation happens all the time with foreign films, it seemed baffling as to why a film that had been playing for months in limited theatrical release with accurate subtitles (to critical praise) would suddenly sport a completely different translation for the home video release. (Especially considering the screener copies sent out to reviewers all had the original translations) We theorized that possibly someone in Magnolia's home video department just thought it'd be cheaper to not pay the original translater (credited to Ingrid Eng) and just have someone else redo them. (Just a theory.)

Naturally, the issue caused quite an uproar amongst fellow critics, fans and consumers that were looking forward to seeing this highly praised cult-classic, only to get an inferior version of it. Magnolia never issued an "official" statement addressing the issue, but spoke to Digital Bits and informed them that new copies of the feature will be issues with "Subtitles English (Theatrical)" listed on the back. No word as to when this was going to happen. Nor were there to be any refunds for the original discs.

It'd been months since we'd heard ANY thing. The only thing I heard (and can confirm) is that the version of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN that is currently streaming on Netflix Watch Instantly IS in fact the theatrical version with the correct subtitles.

Regardless, I had to follow up with Magnolia on the actual DVD/Blu-Ray release. I was nervous that maybe Magnolia decided to completely ignore this issue, citing it as merely the cries of "a few band-wagon mentality bloggers." (Thanks for the actual quote, sales exec)

I wrote directly to Magnolia's video department to see what the status of the new re-issued LET THE RIGHT ONE IN DVD's was. Here's the reply I received from Melissa Romley:

"At this time there is nothing new to update you with. The original theatrical subtitles will be made available as an additional English language subtitle option on future manufacturing runs."

Seemed pretty vague.... and disappointing.

Yet, several fans wrote me to inform me that they HAVE found NEW re-issues of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN at their local TARGET stores. Here's what to look for in insuring you get the RIGHT subtitles:

The good news is... they are out there. You just have to really look for them. And as of right now, TARGET's a good bet. I have yet to hear or see of any Blu-Ray versions with the appropriate subtitles, so please, if you find the Blu-Ray or more stores that have them, comment below so that fellow appreciators of this movie can own the version we saw in theaters.

The project (one of several documentaries and films Garetano is currently in post-production on) regards (alleged) alien abductions and government mind control experiments that occurred at the Camp Hero air force base. The documentary is produced by John Brodie, one of the subjects of Garetano's debut film HORROR BUSINESS. Check out the latest teaser trailer below!

New Pic Of "Babyface" Killer From THE HILLS RUN RED!

The annual FRIGHTFEST UK just announced their full movie screening line-up between the dates of August 27th through the 31st and it seems to be one of their best line-ups ever! Movies debuting include TRIANGLE, THE HILLS RUN RED, CLIVE BARKER'S DREAD, TRICK 'R TREAT, GIALLO, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, BEWARE THE MOON: REMEMBERING AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, THE DESCENT PART 2 & many, many more. UPDATED: 3 Posters For THE COLLECTOR!

3 theatrical one sheet posters have surfaced on-line for Marcus Dunstan's directorial debut THE COLLECTOR, which hits theaters on July 31st! The first comes courtesy of FANGORIA, the second from FearNET. Check 'em out below!

The project, produced by Fortress Features’ Brett Forbes and Patrick Rizzotti and Imaginarium Entertainment Group’s Julie Richardson, stars Josh Stewart (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Criminal Minds), Daniella Alonso (Friday Night Lights, The Hills Have Eyes 2), Michael Reilly Burke (Lincoln Heights, 24), Andrea Roth (Rescue Me, War), Madeline Zima (Californication, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle), Karley Scott-Collins (Pulse 2, The Class), Robert Wisdom (The Wire, The Forgotten) and Juan Fernandez (The Lost City, A Man Apart).

THE COLLECTOR follows the story of handyman and ex-con Arkin, who aims to repay a debt to his ex-wife by robbing his new employer’s country home. Unfortunately for Arkin, a far worse enemy has already laid claim to the property – and the family. As the seconds tick down to midnight, Arkin becomes a reluctant hero trapped by a masked “Collector” in a maze of lethal invention – the Spanish Inquisition as imagined by Rube Goldberg – while trying to rescue the very family he came to rob.

Dunstan and Melton, who came into the national spotlight for their winning screenplay FEAST on Project Greenlight’s third season, have been shepherding the Saw franchise for the past three installments, having written SAW IV, SAW V and the upcoming SAW VI.

“Marcus and Patrick have come up with a unique twist on the home invasion thriller that we think will have people gripping their seats,” said Liddell. “With its stylized blend of action and horror, the movie delivers on every level.”

“In a summer boasting fist-fighting robots and 3-D floating homes, Mickey and his team are more than up to the challenge of delivering an adult horror-thriller to moviegoers seeking a shock to the system,” added Dunstan and Melton. “We're beyond lucky to have such a passionate force behind a film we can't wait to unleash.”

The film will be released through Freestyle Releasing, whom Liddell previously partnered with on The Haunting of Molly Hartley. Liddell was repped in the deal by Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.

The Original STEPFATHER Coming To DVD October 7th!

With Synapse releasing STEPFATHER 2 on DVD on September 29th and a new remake of the original due in theaters on October 16th, Shout! Factory have now announced a DVD of the original THE STEPFATHER. (Which up until now has never been available on DVD!) Directed by Joseph Ruben, THE STEPFATHER starred Terry O'Quinn (LOST), Jill Schoelen, Shelley Hack, Stephen Shellen & Gabrielle Rose.

According to FANGORIA, the disc is expected to arrive on October 7th and feature a new high-definition widescreen transfer, an audio commentary and interviews with producer Jay Benson and actress Jill Schoelen and a whole lot more! More details when we hear 'em!

Synopsis: A priest becomes a vampire…another man’s wife is coveted…a deadly seduction triggers murder. Thirst is the new film from director Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). Already a boxoffice smash in Korea , Thirst was honored with the Prix du Jury [Jury Prize] at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival.

Continuing his explorations of human existence in extreme circumstances, the director spins a tale that he conceived and then developed over several years with co-screenwriter Chung Seo-kyung.

Sang-hyun (played by top Korean star Song Kang-ho, of The Host) is a priest who cherishes life; so much so, that he selflessly volunteers for a secret vaccine development project meant to eradicate a deadly virus. But the virus takes the priest, and a blood transfusion is urgently ordered up for him. The blood he receives is infected, so Sang-hyun lives – but now exists as a vampire. Struggling with his newfound carnal desire for blood, Sang-hyun’s faith is further strained when a childhood friend’s wife, Tae-ju (Kim Ok-vin), comes to him asking for his help in escaping her life. Sang-hyun soon plunges into a world of sensual pleasures, finding himself on intimate terms with the Seven Deadly Sins.

Rob Zombie's EL SUPERBEASTO Meets MICHAEL MYERS!

A few days ago, it was revealed that Rob Zombie's animated feature THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO would be hitting DVD on September 22nd! (See that post along with the cover art HERE!) Now, Zombie has posted a little tease via his My Space blog answering the question what if El Superbeasto came face to face with Michael Myers? See below:

Also worth mentioning, Zombie posted an image of a HALLOWEEN II standee that you'll be seeing in local theaters starting this weekend. It's a 3D cut-out of the recently released theatrical one-sheet poster. Check it out below!

FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE SERIES Season 3 On DVD September 22nd!

Paramount Home Entertainment have set September 22nd as the release date for the 3rd and final season of FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE SERIES. This last season ran from 1989 through 1990 and starred John D. Lemay, Louise Robey, and Chris Wiggins. No features announced as of yet but we'll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out the DVD cover art below:

POP SKULL DVD Cover Art Unveiled!

Halo-8 Entertainment has released the dvd cover art for its upcoming release POP SKULL, a manic, twisted, drug-infused and award-winning psychological horror film directed & co-written by Adam Wingard ("HOME SICK"), starring & co-written by newcomer Lane Hughes, co-written and co-produced by E.L. Katz ("AUTOPSY"), and produced by Peter Katz ("MORTUARY"). The film will hit DVD on July 28, 2009 and is also slated for a string of theatrical events tied in with similarly demented horror releases IN A SPIRAL STATE and GODKILLER.

POP SKULL depicts the lonely and disjointed life of Daniel, a young Alabama pill addict, as his efforts to cope with the trials of his day-to-day life collide with the increasing influence of murderous and displaced spirits that inhabit his home. Plagued by ghosts, Daniel discovers his home holds a secret to a grisly crime... a crime he's doomed to repeat if he can't prevail against the forces that haunt him.

IT'S ALIVE Remake On DVD October 6th!

October 6th, 2009 is the release date listed on the First Look Studios website for their DVD of the IT'S ALIVE remake. Directed by Josef Rusnak from a script by Larry Cohen, Paul Sopocy, James Portolese (based on Larry Cohen's original film of the same name) and starring Bijou Phillips (HOSTEL: PART II, WIZARD OF GORE), James Murray (TV's PRIMEVAL), Skye Bennett (DARK FLOORS), Raphaël Coleman and Arkie Reece, IT'S ALIVE is a modern remake of the classic 1970s horror film. When a young woman (Bijou Phillips) learns that she is pregnant, she leaves graduate school to set up a home with her boyfriend in the country. The fate of the happy new family takes a gruesome turn when animals and people end up brutally dead – all with a strange connection to their newborn. DVD Active got the cover art and release date for Rob Zombie's long awaited animated feature THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO, which hits both DVD and Blu-Ray on September 22nd. Magnet to Unleash THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to Ti West's critically acclaimed horror film THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL. A terrifically crafted homage to 80s horror masterpieces, the film premiered at Tribeca earlier this year and is sure to be an instant classic among genre fans, expertly building a mood of mounting dread to a shockingly terrifying climax. Director West, who was recently tapped by Hollywood to direct a high profile sequel, THE HAUNTING IN GEORGIA, has been regarded as something of a horror wunderkind since 2005’s THE ROOST, and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL unquestionably fulfills that promise.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s Senior Vice President Tom Quinn with Josh Braun of Submarine and Roger Kass of RingTheJing Entertainment, on behalf of MPI Media Group, Glass Eye PIX, RingTheJing Entertainment and Constructovision.

Magnet is excited to release THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL as part of the Magnolia/Magnet Ultra VOD program, which will offer home viewers a chance to see the film a month before it debuts theatrically. Magnet plans to launch the film on VOD late September 2009, with a theatrical release timed to Halloween.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL stars the sexy Jocelin Donahue stars as college student Samantha Hughes who takes a babysitting job in a remote mansion with her good friend Megan (indie favorite Greta Gerwig). She’s desperate for money and the pay is good, but something feels wrong, and Samantha quickly realizes that the girls are trapped. As a lunar eclipse darkens the night sky, she realizes that her employers—cult favorites Tom Noonan (MANHUNTER) and Mary Woronov (ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL)—have something truly terrifying in store for them. (Pfft... the film also stars THE SIGNAL's AJ Bowen!)

Is The Full GRINDHOUSE Coming To Blu-Ray?

Are we finally going to get to see the original 3 hour theatrical version of Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez's GRINDHOUSE when it hits Blu-Ray on August 11th? If this rumor holds any truth, it's very possible. Blu-Ray.com posted the following: "An early announcement to retailers indicates that Genius Products and The Weinstein Company are set to release Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 'Grindhouse' on Blu-ray on August 11. No edition details are available, other than this would be a two-disc set, but it may well be the theatrical Grindhouse double feature"

It seems the Blu-Ray release is being timed with Tarantino's latest THE INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. No word on if the 2 disc set sports the full theatrical experience or both films seperated onto 2 discs (the way they were released on DVD) but we're hoping Disc One will have the 3 hour cut with the fictious trailers and Disc Two will cart over all the extras from the previous release. More when we hear it!

FEAR ITSELF: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON Comes To DVD September 15th!

Lionsgate has announced that FEAR ITSELF: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON will finally be released on DVD on September 15th. I say finally because only 8 of the 13 episodes aired on NBC during the show's initial run. The boxed set will feature all 13 episodes (4 of which are "director's cuts") spread out through 4 discs. Each episode will sport a bonus featurette titled "Recipe Of Fear" with cast & crew interviews. Box art, as well as the complete press release is below:
