Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Evil Dead series) returns to the horror genre with Drag Me To Hell, an original tale of a young woman’s desperate quest to break an evil curse.
Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.

In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: How far will she go to break free of the curse?

Meet The New Young Michael Myers! HALLOWEEN 2 Update!

"Here he is for the first time CHASE VANEK the new young Michael Myers. Chase has been kicking ass on set and we are sure you will love him as much as we do. Chase's favorite question to ask me is "When do I get to kill someone ?" Kind of reminds me of another young Michael I used to know."

UPDATED: Let The Wrong Subtitles In To LET THE RIGHT ONE IN?!

If you're an avid reader of this or just about any other horror web-publication, then no doubt you've heard plenty about the Swedish indie-vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN - a somber, haunting & beautiful tale directed with finesse by Tomas Alfredson. In the last year, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN has quickly garnered "cult" like status among genre & movie fans alike. It managed to top the "best of 2008" lists for just about every horror website out there, and has become a favorite for the entire ICONS staff here. So, naturally, we were all rather excited that the film finally was released last week here in the US on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

I personally decided to host a screening of the DVD with a handful of friends that had yet to experience LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. (Mind you, I'd already had an advance early screener copy of the movie for months and had seen it twice during it's limited theatrical run, so it's safe to say that I knew the film rather intimately. We were all excited to watch a top quality DVD version though in the comfort of my own home.)

About 20 minutes into the screening, I was absolutely horrified.

The subtitles had been drastically changed since the last time I saw it, and dare I say... had been completely dumbed down? Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the dark humor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful and a favorite amongst audiences last year. I tried to carry on and ignore it, hoping that only a few of the translations were off... but... I was wrong. Just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie.

It became so frustrating, that I stopped the US DVD, got my original screener copy & we continued by watching that version instead. I realize now that sadly for everyone else out there, they don't have this option.

What's exactly wrong? How bad could it be? Let me walk you through it with a series of screengrabs from the original screener cut, and the recently released US DVD/Blu-Ray...

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This important scene is the first conversation between the main characters Oskar and Eli. Eli's immediate sarcasm sets up for the type of dark humor you can expect from the rest of the movie. It's not meant for "laughs", but it completely sets up the tone of the overall movie.

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Now look at how that entire above conversation is carried out in the DVD release...

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Eli tells Oskar that she can't be friends with him, despite just meeting for the first time. I know I can personally remember how I sarcastically joked with girls from school back when I was 12...

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: That easily relatable type of conversation is lost in translation here... A few words off make him sound a bit more arrogant here rather then playful...

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: The character of Haken is Eli's keeper, the one that supplies our pint sized vampire with pint sized plastic cartons of blood! After failing on his most recent attempt, he very nervously searches for the right words to calm the fury of his master. He chooses simply "Forgive me."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Here... he just says "Sorry." Sure, it may read like he's saying the same thing, but I assure you, the intent for Haken is to beg for forgiveness, not stupidly say "D'uh! Sorry!"

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This entire conversation introduces us to the other cast of characters in LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. You get the vibe they come to this diner/pub often, talk politics and news & share a few beers together. They spot Haken, the "new guy" in town and decide to invite him over. Read the following:

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Now look at how ALL of the above was summed up for the American DVD release, which... quite franky doesn't make any sense whatsoever:

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Lacke tries to politely invite over Haken to join them. Look at how he asks him in the original translation:

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: And now, the American DVD translation:

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This is again, subtle. But the way Eli confesses her age here is in line with all her conversations with Oskar. It also comes into play again later in the movie:

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Would anyone you know say "12 about?"

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: This sweet scene ends with Eli teaching Oskar how to solve a Rubiks Cube. While she's explaining, you can tell from the way Oskar stares at her that he's falling for his new friend...

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: But why bother holding onto the intent of that scene? Instead we get "You have to start here... then here."

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: In this important moment, Oskar explains to Eli how the bullies at school will not relent and pick on him constantly. She tells him to fight back and "Hit back. Hard."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Summed up even quicker here... and losing all the power of her words.

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Oskar teaches Eli how to use Morse Code so they can communicate at night via the wall that separates their apartments. First word he says to her when they realize it works? "SWEET."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: American DVD translations? Why bother with a full word. We get letters that don't spell anything... Well done.

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Now this is important. You can already tell there's something strained about the relationship between Haken and Eli. He's failed her before, yet she still tells him he doesn't have to go out on her behalf tonight in search of blood. His response says so much, "What else am I good for?"

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: Completely lost in this version. There's a reason Haken is so devoted to Eli that doesn't come across clearly during the first viewing, but does on repeat viewings.

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: Haken is attempting to murder a boy to harvest his blood for Eli. The boy's friend comes looking for him and breaks up this tense moment with a funny line saying "Come on, man... You can jerk off at home."

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: You're supposed to break the tension of that scene with that line above, but that's not what we get below:

ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONS: SPOILER ALERT - Now, in an act of desperation, Haken decides he'd rather sacrifice himself then risk anyone catching Eli. His last words? He calls out her name. WHICH you can hear him say. (Eli translates the same in English, folks...)

US AMERICAN DVD TRANSLATIONS: The American one pretends to tell us something we didn't already know... even though we HEAR him calling out her name when this translation comes up...

I honestly can go on and on and on, but I think you get the point.

How could this have possibly happened? The original screener copies carried the correct subtitles. The proof is above! Was it someone at Magnolia or Magnet's fault for this major, major blunder?

Here's a theory: The original screener attributes that the subtitles were done by Ingrid Eng. (Multiple kudos to Miss Eng for doing an amazing job.) My guess is that in order to re-use them for the American version of the DVD, Magnolia/MAGNET probably had to pay Ingrid again for her services. Rather then do that, perhaps they hired someone else to do the translations for real cheap.

And cheap they are!

EPIC FAIL.

I hate to say this because I've been a huge advocate of this movie from the get-go, but because of my love of this movie, I have to strongly advise against buying the Magnolia/Magnet US DVD or Blu-Ray version of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, because it is NOT the version of the movie the director would've wanted you to experience. Perhaps there's a good import DVD version of it out there somewhere? Or maybe Magnolia can rectify this disasterous mistake and re-issue the DVD again in a year or so.

We'll keep you posted on this story as we research more...

In the meantime, read our FRIGHT exclusive interview with LET THE RIGHT ONE IN director TOMAS ALFREDSON:

Directed by Tomas Alfredson from a script by John Ajvide Lindqvist (based on his original novel of the same name), LET THE RIGHT ONE IN stars Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragner, Henrik Dahl, Karin Bergquist, Peter Carlberg, Ika Nord & Mikael Rahm.

UPDATE: We have an update on Magnolia's plans for all future pressings of the LET THE RIGHT ONE IN DVD. Read that HERE!

UPDATE 2: FRIGHT reader John send along the following exchanges with Magnolia.

*NOTE: There seems to be a ton of confusion over the following. To clarify, the following is not an "official" statement. The following is an email that a reader named John wanted me to share with you. The following is Magnolia's response to HIM. I cut and pasted portions of his email to ICONS that led to the slight confusion. John said his emails with Mongrel were the complete opposite of this one & that they were very receptive. He was pointing out the difference between how the 2 companies are dealing with their costumers. Below being the email he got from Magnolia. Hope that clears up the confusion...

"Yes the bloggers are having a field day on this one.   Normally they like to pick on the English Dub tracks, but in this case it's the subtitles. Obviously online tend to get rowdy and bandwagon mentality without knowing all the details.   The current subtitle track is not altering the context of the film at all, in fact it's a more literal translation than any prior version of subtitles.    It's not a defective or faulty subtitle file.  Just more literal and larger in size for the small screen.  Both English and Spanish subtitle files were produced for this dvd release.   Frankly it's not all that uncommon to have the subs vary from prior releases, typically go unnoticed as subs are purely a translation of film dialogue.  This wouldn't have been a blip had it not been for one particular horror blog doing a side by side and claiming that they are wrong.  They are not.  We are not doing a recall or anything of that nature, again, these are not defective.   Title came out two weeks ago and general public don't notice and don't care - bloggers are well known for jumping on something, making an issue of it and moving on.    We have decided that based on the feedback that we will be making a running change, so that going forward (once inventories deplete), we will be making that subtitle version available. Options in set up will be; English Subtitles / English (theatrical) Subtitles  / Spanish Subtitles""

Editors note: I'm quite sure director Tomas Alfredson would disagree with the above.

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - ACTOR/WRITER/DIRECTOR WILLIAM BUTLER!

Just added! A FRIGHT exclusive interview with WILLIAM BUTLER! As a genre fan, you probably recognize William Butler. After all, he got killed in just about every major horror sequel in the late 80's/early 90's - LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1990. Hell, even the Ghoulies got him in GHOULIES II, as well as Freddy Krueger in an episode of FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES.

But after all those on-screen cinematic deaths, he went on to write & direct a few horror features of his own with MADHOUSE (starring Joshua Leonard, Jordan Ladd, Lance Henriksen & Natasha Lyonne) & FURNACE (with Michael Pare, Ja Rule, Danny Trejo & Tom Sizemore). He also co-wrote RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 4: NECROPOLIS & RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD 5: RAVE TO THE GRAVE. (Don't worry, he explains what happened with both of those in this interview).

Between all of the above mentioned projects, on top of directing gigs for everything from music videos to POWER RANGERS episodes to THE GINGERDEAD MAN 2 (and 3!), Butler has had one of the most interesting and prolific careers in the genre. We got to talk to him candidly about it all! So sit back, read and enjoy our FRIGHT exclusive interview with actor/writer/director William Butler! Click either image below to read it!

THE ITALIANS ARE INVADING CHILLER THEATRE! Mini-Interviews with Ian McCulloch, Silvia Collatina & Michael Sopkiw!

The Italians Are Invading Chiller Theatre!

Fans of 1980s Italian exploitation have every reason to rejoice. In three weeks, Chiller Theatre in Parsippany, New Jersey will host the Italian Invasion, a gathering of a number of stars from the Fulci period. Mike Baronas has put together a great collection of guests that include: the 30th anniversary ZOMBIE reunion with Ian McCulloch, Al Cliver, Richard Johnson, and old Worm Eye himself, Ottaviano Dell’acqua; Silvia Collatina and Giovanni Frezza, the child couple from Fulci’s HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY; sci-fi/ horror director Luigi Cozzi; action star Michael Sopkiw; and Fulci actresses Malisa Longo and Zora Kerowa, the latter of ANTHROPOPHAGUS fame.

In anticipation of the Italian Invasion, Mike Baronas was gracious enough to grant me access to three of the Invasion guests for quick interviews. I thank Ian McCulloch, Silvia Collatina and Michael Sopkiw for taking the time to answer my questions. If you’re a fan of the Italians, go meet these three at Chiller. From the answers they gave me, I guarantee they won’t disappoint.

Ian McCulloch

Phil Fasso: ZOMBIE has developed a rabid cult following over the years. Many Fulci fans place it on par with Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD. Why do you think that it’s achieved that status?

Ian: It is difficult to find a reason for the continued success of ZOMBIE. I suppose it came out at the right time and had all the right ingredients of plot, exotic locations and special effects. It would be nice to think that we actors helped too but I think we could have changed roles with the Zombies and the film would have been as successful. The marketing team also deserve a pat on the back and the continued notoriety of certain scenes and its video nasty history have all helped.

PF: What are your best recollections from working on ZOMBIE?

IM: ZOMBIE was the first major film I made where I was a leading player. When you move overnight from a dingy bed and breakfast and seven performances a week in a dilapidated theatre in an English provincial town to being treated like a prince in the best hotels in Rome and New York and being accorded a decent amount of respect on the set with the time and money to enjoy life – you realize what you have been missing. The unit were really professional, helpful and friendly. Bizarrely it was the time taken over my make up which gave me my first surprise. Instead of the perfunctory 30 seconds in a British movie accompanied by a gasp of horror when you asked for your eyelashes to be darkened to spend half an hour being made screen presentable was a delight.

PF: ZOMBIE wasn’t your only foray into living dead films. How did your experience on ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST compare with working on Fulci’s film?

IM: ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST was a really silly movie but fun. Fabrizio de Angelis cleverly cashed in on the success of ZOMBIE with virtually the same plot, same locations and me. I liked the director. I am impressed by people who have had careers outside show business and he had been a fairly distinguished boxer. There can’t have been many film directors with the same qualifications. I also liked the idea of there being a statue of him at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. The film clearly had a smaller budget than ZOMBIE and sadly it shows but I presume it made a good deal of money for Fabrizio and I have only happy memories of making it.

PF: How was your experience working with Luigi Cozzi, another Chiller guest, on CONTAMINATION? Did you prefer acting in science fiction as opposed to horror? Why or why not?

IM: I have not seen any of my Italian films on screen. CONTAMINATION was as silly as ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST but when you consider all the problems getting a film from idea/script to finished article you have to give credit to the people behind it. Luigi was a lovely man to work for. Very generous and considerate. Far and away the most gentlemanly of the three. Sadly I was not asked to contribute to the DVDs of the film but I am looking forward to seeing him again in Parsippany. There is of course no difference to acting in either of the two genres. As I have frequently said the acting is not all that important in such films.

PF: As a citizen of the U.K., what is your opinion of the outcry during the video nasty era in the early 1980s? How do you feel about violence in films?

IM: In a strange quirk of fate my wife’s uncle sat on the committee which classified my three Italian films as video nasties. He told me they had just banned twenty or so. I told him I was in three of them. He looked at me reproachfully and said “ Ian, how could you?” I thought it was funny at the time but today writing this I am wondering why he did not know I was in them . Mindless violence is to be condemned. In films like ZOMBIE you expect it. I was upset by the countless deaths in "WHERE EAGLES DARE" where I played a German officer. Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton between them slaughtered what seemed like several divisions of the German Army.

PF: ZOMBIE has made you a cult figure in the United States. How does it feel to have that status?

IM: Needless to say I do not feel like a cult figure. However I am looking forward to seeing fans of the film at the convention.

PF: ZOMBIE is 30 years old. As you prepare to tour the convention circuit, starting with Chiller, what stand out about it for you now?

IM: When I was asked to be in "ZOMBIE" I thought it was a joke. It was after all April Fool’s Day. But it led to a year of filming in the States, the Caribbean and Italy and while it did not make me rich financially it enriched my life. Coming to Parsippany is part of that.

Silvia Collatina

PF: How did you first get to work with Lucio Fulci?

Silvia: In fact I do not remember my first contact with him, I just have a potpourri of images and scenes but I still remember my test. My agent told me there was a part in a horror movie and I didn’t think twice. … I had to play a scary child using all the features of my face, miming amazement and terror. Frankly speaking I do not remember my first contact with him.

PF: Fulci was known to be hard on his actresses, and I’ve heard also on his child actors. How did he treat you when you worked with him on HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY?

SC: He was very impulsive and spontaneous so, consequently, unpredictable. He wanted us to be very involved while acting and Lucio didn’t hold back from shouting at us if he was not satisfied with a scene. He had everything already fixed in his mind and thus was rather severe. The scene in which Mae cries in front of the display window where Anja Pieroni’s mock-up loses its head – because she was to die - tells a lot. I didn’t succeed in crying because to be honest I couldn’t care less about her death in reality so Lucio got so angry (just verbally) that I was very upset and I burst into tears (also after the scene). Anyway I was fascinated by his behavior: sometimes affectionate, even childish but also capable of being rude and very demanding, you had to create a close connection to him to understand his thought.

PF: You play the creepy, supernatural child in HOUSE, much like Damien in the OMEN films. From where did you draw inspiration for the character? What was your acting technique?

SC: Since very young I’ve always been fond of horror movies and that somewhat helped. When the production chose me I was very excited to take part in such a peculiar movie. I had no special technique to follow: my only inspiration was trying to get involved in my role; I really felt I was Mae trying to save Bob. I had this mission. I was real and unreal at the same time! Hanging between the past and the present. I felt totally at my ease playing such a character, Mae was me, and I was Mae!

PF: HOUSE is part of Fulci’s revered zombie trilogy. How does it feel to be part of such a well-loved work?

SC: It’s an honor having taken part in such a movie, which still represents a must, a cult movie for his genre. I did not know there were so many fans of this movie considering almost 30 years has passed! I think that people love this movie so much because it has lots of different successful elements mixed all together: the shots that focus on the actors’ eyes, closing up on peculiar details, the horror transmitted slowly but so violently to the public, the environment so grotesque as a whole, the pastel colors of the autumn, the mystery that enshrouds the movie…. And Dr. Freudstein… Everyone has been fascinated by him: in our collective imagination he is still alive, for ever living in that House and awaiting other victims, other fresh flesh…

PF: You worked with Fulci again on MURDEROCK. How did that experience compare with working on HOUSE? The shift from small town zombie flick to big city giallo must’ve been interesting.

SC: Decidedly two different locations and Mae and Molly are two different personages. I’d define them as two cameos even if they are not the main characters in their respective movies. Mae was free to appear everywhere, in very wide spaces, while Molly was anchored to her wheelchair in limited area. Working on MURDEROCK was perhaps a little more challenging, I’d say harder, because Molly had a strong personality. Owing to her handicap, she was a mean, spoiled and bored child, completely different from what I was (luckily!!). Mae on the other hand embodied the ethereal, the supernatural, a pure white energy. I feel very close to this character…

PF: You’re appearing at the Chiller Theatre convention with your co-star Giovanni Frezza. As you prepare to meet the fans, what stands out to you about HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY and MURDEROCK now?

SC: Certainly, It will be unusual for both of us. I am very excited at the idea of meeting fans because I am fan of horror movies too and I am honored to shake the hands of other important guests I’ve always admired through television so I will be surely happy and very willing to welcome them of course. I think that people see Mae and Bob as a cult couple of horror movies, the saver and the saved. In the collective imagination they will be always together, immortal and eternally children in another dimension.

Michael Sopkiw

PF: What was it like being an action star during a time when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were among the biggest names in all of film?

Michael: Sylvestre and who; Arnold? I know I've heard of these guys before; especially that Arnold one. Isn't he my governor? I think he's one of those guys who spent all the state's money while things were good without putting any aside for the rainy daze and now that it's pouring says he trying to work out a better budget now........ And that Sylvester; wasn't he one of the family Stone? Sure you got his last name right? Whomever they are, I can assure you it was not competitive. I counted my blessings being put into the position of "action star". It alters reality a bit, puts one into a different realm altogether and you just have to know what is real and enjoy the moments as you pass through them; giving your best throughout. Growing along with it but not losing yourself in it. My guess is that Sly & Arnold were in similar states but on a grander scale. They're still alive too right?

PF: You made two films directed by famed Italian Lamberto Bava. What were your experiences like working with him?

MS: Almost nothing but praises for Lamberto. He's a very compassionate guy; pretty much to be expected being Italian. That was my experience with most Italians. But he shows it in his everyday consideration and caring for both actors and crew. And he sure knew how to make a lot with a little. He was always quite accessible and gentle but seems to have had a bit of a penchant for blood. You noticed? I would love to speak with him now to find out a little bit more of what drove him.

PF: Your career was strictly an endeavor in exploitation films. How do you feel about your films, and the whole exploitative genre?

MS: Was? Is it over? I am just preparing myself for the best! OK; I have mixed feelings about the genre. On one hand exploitive anything has negative connotations. Something more original and popular is being ripped off. If the choice was mine to make I would have been doing Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford in DIRTY HARRY and BLADE RUNNER or something with a more original or intriguing story line. But the exploitation genre has the advantage of not having to take itself so seriously and therefore has a great deal of freedom. So it actually turns out that, in a big way, this genre suits me and I find some of it quite entertaining. Some more than others ......

PF: Which of your four films was your favorite? Why?

MS: That's a tough one. They were all a blast to work on. I suppose overall AFTER THE FALL OF NY would top the list as a fave film. I think it has the most memorable lines like "Cleaned up & disinfected she might be all right." I also think it has the best caliber of actors overall with Gigi, Vince, Romano, Gigetto, Valentine, et al. There were really some good performances there I think and some serious actors.

PF: Your post-film career took a turn toward science. Can you tell me about it? How would you compare it to a career as an action hero?

MS: WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER HERO! Tina Turner. Not so sure she had it right but it's not an easy career to maintain. Necessity breeds ingenuity though and I needed to do something after figuring out that Tina seemed to be right by about 1989. So I started a couple of other ventures including the special violet glass I work with now. I am actually a distributor, not a scientist, although some scientific background is helpful due to the special properties of this particular glass. Most of the 5 semesters I spent in various schools after high school were math and science courses. The glass is an effective light filter, and extensive research has been done which wavelengths are filtered out and how much of which penetrate the glass. But it is their effects on the products stored in the glass which is most amazing. There is hardly any way I can see to compare the two careers other than we live in the same body through them. (Actually, I think I would have stayed in much better shape if I had the camera aimed at me more through the years....) So in short, I am fascinated by the glass and really believe the world is a better place with it in my honest opinion, but frankly, being an action hero had its perks!

PF: As you head toward meeting fans at Chiller Theatre, what kind of fan reaction do you get from fans of exploitation cinema nowadays?

MS: I think I only have about 6 and they are all more like friends. Well, one of them, and probably the biggest, is my mother, and she's less like a friend and more like a mother. But they're very supportive so like when things get tight and I need a little beer money, all I have to do is email and tons of cash comes in, which holds me over since I don't get any residuals from the Italians. At the same time they respect my privacy, which is great, because I wouldn't know how to handle more correspondence.

MONSTER MANIA 12: CONVENTION REPORT!

Greetings from Tromaville! (and Cherry Hill) (Report by Phil Fasso)

I know people who swear by the twice yearly Monstermania convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Some call it their favorite convention, and I know others who attend only one convention, and this is the one. Look it up on the internet and you’ll find a whole message board of devotees who were licking their lips as MM 12 approached.

And then there’s me.

I’ve always enjoyed the Chiller shows in Jersey much more than the Monstermania's. Chiller offers a much larger guest list, and even as it veered toward more mainstream celebrities the past few shows (a trend it’s thankfully eschewing for the upcoming April show), I’ve always found horror stars to appreciate there. Monstermania does, however, have a few things I dig. The con always runs theme shows, and does a good job at getting large clusters of celebrities from various horror franchises. It also manages to get one or two stars every show that are rarities on the circuit. This show was no different. It offered a huge selection of victims from Friday the 13th, with a smattering of Jason's, as well as a small Phantasm reunion, minus Tall Man Angus Scrimm. As Tobe Hooper had bailed out, the show also brought in Lance Henriksen at the 11th hour. (The other headliner was Alice Cooper and his original band; I can’t comment on Cooper at all, because I made no attempt to meet him, and don’t even know where his line was.)

That was all good. But even with its unique flavor, Monstermania was an awfully quiet show. Attendance seemed sparse, perhaps because of the recession we’re all suffering through, perhaps because this is the second Friday the 13th reunion it had run. It also may be that the main problem with focusing on one or two themes is that it alienates attendees who aren’t fans of those themes. Even those outside the Jason films didn’t seem to be doing booming business, though. Henriksen’s line paled in comparison to last year’s Malcolm McDowell (yet return guest Betsy Palmer’s line was robust all weekend). My biggest problem was that with a much smaller guest list than the past few MM’s I’ve been to, I had little to do once I got the few autographs I really wanted. Sure, the dealer’s room was large, but most of the vendors are the same I see at Chiller.

With FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2's Amy Steel!

I did get some joy out of MM 12. I finally got to meet Don Coscarelli, and discuss with him how the Phantasm films are really not American horror films, so much as they’re really European art films (he was flattered). I got to have long conversations with the guys who produced His Name Was Jason, Tony Masi and Thommy Hutson. They’re great guys who started off as fans, just like you and me. They have interesting stories to tell , and give hope to every fan out there who’d like to be part of the industry someday. I also got to see just how grateful Derek Mears is to is fans; stopping to pose for pictures in the bar on Saturday night, on his own free time without charging, is a rarity, and a pleasant one. And Kristina Klebe had a few 8x10’s of her and Kerry King from Slayer, which just about made the convention a success for me on its own (Slayer and Icons of Fright will always go hand in hand for me, as they should for you too).

PHANTASM/BUBBA HO-TEP director Don Coscarelli!

HIS NAME WAS JASON producers Thommy Hutson and Anthony Masi!

Phil Vs FRIDAY THE 13TH's Derek Mears!

Quality time with HALLOWEEN's Kristina Klebe!

And then there was my encounter with Lloyd Kaufman. For 10 minutes, one corner of Cherry Hill became Tromaville for me. My buddy X and I have been discussing writing a screenplay for over a year now. Last month, we actually sat down and did so. Deadtention, our final product, could only be made as a Troma film, so it was too sweet that I was able to hand deliver it to the studio’s head. Uncle Lloyd was gracious enough to sign a bunch of my stuff for free, although he was more obsessed with my friend Nicole’s ample chest than me when it came time to take a picture.

It's always a party at Uncle Lloyd's table!

The best thing I can say about MM 12 is that it gave me the opportunity to catch up with old friend, and to make some new ones. I hadn’t seen Nicole in years, and the con gave me a full weekend of her. I got the chance to catch up with my friend Dom, who I’m always promising to say hello to, as we attend the same cons. Getting to meet Nicole’s friend Jonathan was nice too, as I found another Mary Tyler Moore Show fan. I shared a drink with Rob G and Mike C from Icons, and met some really cool board members from the MM site, especially Renee. If the actual con was a little underwhelming, the weekend was one to remember because of the friends I got to spend time with.

Monstermania will always be the apple of some convention goers’ eyes. For them, I’m sure MM12 was a great success, and that they’ll continue to attend no matter who is on the guest list. As for me, I’ll continue to check the guest list before I buy my ticket. Perhaps some of those rare guests will draw me back to Cherry Hill, where my sweet friend Nicole will surely be waiting with a ticket of her own.

Halloween's Danielle Harris, Battlestar Galactica's Nicki Clyne, Threat's Katie Nisa Join GODKILLER!

"GODKILLER" DRAWS IN THREE MORE GENRE HEROINES: DANIELLE HARRIS (ROB ZOMBIE'S "HALLOWEEN 1 & 2") KATIE NISA ("THREAT") NICKI CLYNE ("BATTLESTAR GALACTICA")

- Genre heroines join Halo-8's 'illustrated film' by award-winning filmmaker -

Los Angeles, CA, March 26, 2009 - Genre heroines Danielle Harris ("HALLOWEEN 4 & 5," Rob Zombie's "HALLOWEEN 1 & 2"), Katie Nisa ("THREAT"), and Nicki Clyne ("BATTLESTAR GALACTICA") have joined Lance Henriksen ("AVP: ALIEN VS PREDATOR"), Bill Moseley ("THE DEVIL'S REJECTS"), Tiffany Shepis ("NIGHT OF THE DEMONS" remake), Justin Pierre (singer of MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK), Lydia Lunch (Richard Kern's "HARDCORE COLLECTION"), and Davey Havok (singer of A.F.I.) in the cast of the 'illustrated film' adaptation "GODKILLER," written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Pizzolo ("THREAT") based on the comic book he created with illustrator Anna Muckcracker. Producer Halo-8 Entertainment is planning to unveil a new and exclusive preview clip at Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles April 17-19, 2009.

Danielle Harris Katie Nisa Nicki Clyne

"The ladies of GODKILLER are ferocious mixes of strength, sexuality, and survivalism... it's a pretty tough world Anna & I created and these characters need brave, powerful voices. I couldn't be happier with the casting of Danielle, Katie, and Nicki, each one has a bold and unique personality that channels a rich depth and humanity into the film," said Pizzolo.

About the GODKILLER 'illustrated film'
The 'illustrated film' Pizzolo is creating for the adaption mixes elements of anime, radio drama, video games, and motion comics. Utilizing the original artwork from the comic book, the 'illustrated film' adds motion animation, visual effects, elaborate sound design, music, and voice-acting performances. Halo-8 intends to release limited-edition, serialized, short-form DVDs through the Spring and Summer before releasing the full-length feature theatrically in Fall 2009.

Pizzolo explained "when we decided to make an anime adaptation of the comic book, I couldn't see how a traditional animated approach would do justice to Anna's incredibly lush and detailed illustrations. It made perfect sense to adapt the medium to suit her art, rather than vice versa."

GODKILLER takes place in a dark-future after economic collapse, after nuclear holy war, and after Earth is colonized by alien races. Tommy and his kid sister Lucy live in an orphanage in one of the few remaining city-states, but Lucy is critically ill and desperately in need of a new heart. Tommy's odyssey to find a new heart for his sister begins when he follows an organ-stealing prostitute named Halfpipe out of the city-state and into the savage borderland known as Outer City. GODKILLER mixes unforgiving brutality, quantum physics, conspiracy theory, and secret history for an iconoclastic hero's journey like none before it.

Pizzolo and Halo-8 are currently putting together a team for the 'illustrated film' based on his comic book "HOW I LOST MY VIRGINITY -BY ALEXANDRA JONES," as well as other titles Halo-8 has in development.

Noot Seear Cast In TWILIGHT Sequel NEW MOON!

E OnLine is reporting that TWILIGHT sequel NEW MOON has found it's Heidi. The web publication reports that Canadian supermodel Noot Seear has won the coveted role of the beautiful human bait in the TWILIGHT sequel. The post goes on to say "Heidi is described in Stephenie Meyer's novel as a "fisher" who brings humans to the Volturi vampires to eat. She has "exceptional, unforgettable" beauty, which includes stunning legs, long hair and violet eyes."

She joins recently announced cast members Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman whom form the wolf pack with returning Jacob, Taylor Lautner. Dakota Fanning recently joined the cast along with returning leads Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson.

In the film Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.

The release date for NEW MOON is currently set for November 20th, 2009 with shooting currently underway! (The third TWILIGHT film ECLIPSE is penciled into a June 30th, 2010 release date.) Check out details for the TWILIGHT ULTIMATE EDITION BOXED SET out on May 5th right HERE!

Based on the hit novel series by Stephenie Meyer, TWILIGHT was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Edi Gathegi, Rachelle Lefevre, Ashley Greene, Billy Burke, Cam Cigandet, Kellan Lutz, Anna Kendrick and Taylor Lautner. Chris Weitz will direct the sequel NEW MOON.

Ian Somerhalder Joins VAMPIRE DIARIES!

Ian Somerhalder, who played Boone on the ABC hit show "LOST," and also appeared in the genre feature PULSE (let's not forget THE RULES OF ATTRACTION either) has joined the cast of the CW's drama pilot "VAMPIRE DIARIES," according to Variety.

Somerhalder is set to play Damon, a smug vampire who can go from playful to evil in a split second. Also joining the cast are Zach Roerig ("Friday Night Lights"), who will play the jock Matt, and Kayla Ewell ("Entourage"), who will play Matt's sister. Previously announced cast includes Nina Dobrev and Steven R. McQueen.

"VAMPIRE DIARIES," based on a series of books from Alloy Entertainment, centers on a woman who falls for two vampire brothers - one good and one evil. Warner Bros. TV is behind the project, along with Alloy and Outerbanks Ent.

THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT... From Ron Howard?!

Variety is reporting that Universal and Imagine Entertainment are gearing up to make THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT, based upon the Image Comics graphic novel which hits store shelves on April 8th.

The article says Universal "sparked to "LOVECRAFT" because its take on classic horror fits in well with the studio's library of monster fare featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, the last of which is being brought back to the bigscreen later this year."

"Created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, the book borrows elements from Lovecraft's life, such as his family's struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer's block, and transforms the young writer's darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world. Lovecraft, who died in 1937, is considered one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century."

"Carter, a commercial director, will pen the script and serve as executive producer alongside Blitz with the project being a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard."

UPDATE: Magnolia To Let The RIGHT Subtitles In!

Our friend Tim Anderson from Bloody-Disgusting brought to our attention that Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits.com has contacted Magnolia/Magnet to find out more details on the "subtitles" issue that we outlined from the US DVD/Blu-Ray in our previous news post HERE.

As we await an official statement from Magnolia/Magnet, here's what they told Digital Bits:

"We've been made aware that there are several fans that don't like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version."

(From The Digital Bits:) We asked Magnet some follow-up questions, specifically how people will be able to identify the new discs, when they'll be available in stores and if there will be an exchange program for those who have the existing version. Here's what they said:

"There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH."

Icons Of Fright is happy to hear that Magnolia and Magnet are listening to the fans and have chosen to make the correct subtitles available going forward. Along with several other publications we have been raving about this brilliant film for the last year now, and we'll at least rest easy knowing the version of the film we highly recommended will soon be available.

I love what Magnolia and Magnet have done with their genre films. Three of their films were among our BEST OF 2008 list last year. They're known for finding quality horror films such as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, TIMECRIMES, SPLINTER, DONKEY PUNCH, SHROOMS, not to mention their fine work in previous years bringing us THE HOST and THE SIGNAL (A movie we strongly advocated upon it's release). If we didn't care tremendously about this movie, we would never have spoken out about it so passionately. We're just glad that they're looking into the best possible ways to rectify this situation. We'll keep you posted on when they issue an official statement about this issue.

In the meantime, click the image below to read the original post:

UPDATE: FRIGHT reader John send along the following exchanges with both Magnolia and then Mongrel who are handling the DVD release in Canada.

From John's email: "Here is Magnolia's official response to this issue to, which I received last Friday:

I'm quite sure director Tomas Alfredson would disagree with the above. More from John below:

Here is my response to Mongrel:

"Dear Mr. Frank:

Thank-you for your quick response.  However, I must say that Magnolia's reply is quite disconcerting with it's name-calling and odd rationalizing. As for me, I simply just want to own the film I saw in the theater.  For example the line where Eli says she lives here, "in the jungle gym", is priceless, and to omit it seems inconceivable.  And there are many more examples.  So, my final question to you is:  will Mongrel, too, be making the theatrical subtitles available in future?  Until then, I will not be purchasing the dvd.

Thanks for your time and consideration"

And finally here is Mongrels decent response:

"Hi, John - I too, was pretty surprised by Magnolia's reaction.  I didn't know that they were planning to issue a different version of subtitles on the DVD; they never disclosed that to us.  In any event, we will release the new version in Canada as soon as it is available with the theatrical subtitles.  I can certainly appreciate your desire to delay your purchase until that time."

New HELLRAISER Boxed Set = BAD-ASS! (Out April 21st!)

On April 21st, Anchor Bay Entertainment will release The HELLRAISER Limited Edition Box Set. The boxed set will feature the special editions of HELLRAISER 1 and HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, along with the brand new Blu-Ray version of the first HELLRAISER. (That also comes out solo that day as well.)

A few years back, I went out of my way to pick up the import UK version of the HELLRAISER boxed set (which featured the first 3 movies, as well as a bonus disc with all of Clive Barker's early short films). The main selling point was the awesome configuration "box" that UK set came in. Well, Anchor Bay US has more then made up for it with this upcoming release. Unlike the UK box which was just a cardboard package, this one actually opens up ala the configuration box from the movie. Check it out!

Written & directed by Clive Barker, HELLRAISER stars Andrew Robinson, Ashley Laurence, Clare Higgins, Sean Chapman, Oliver Smith and Doug Bradley as Pinhead. The Blu-Ray and limited edition boxed set hit store shelves on April 21st! Click HERE to read the full press release from our previous news post!

Writers Talk THE BIRDS and POLTERGEIST Remakes!

As much as we all dislike the idea of some of our all time favorite films being remade, we have to accept the fact that with any recognizable title, it's almost inevitable. We can only hope the right people are involved when it comes to making these updates, especially when the films in question are classics such as THE BIRDS and POLTERGEIST.

TheWrap.com just had a chat with screenwriting duo Stiles White and Juliet Snowden, fresh off the success of Alex Proyas's KNOWING (which the pair wrote). Snowden tells The Wrap, "With something like "THE BIRDS," you can take the concept of birds gone crazy and put that onto a myriad of situations.  Whereas with some other remakes, we really felt that those were movies that we really couldn't think of new scenes or ideas.  Some of these remakes are already-perfect movies. We’re not saying "THE BIRDS" isn't a perfect movie -- but when we heard about that we had, instantly, a lot of ideas about what we could do [in the present] and how we would change it."

"It was presented to us as they wanted to go back to the original source material because you just don’t want to attempt to remake a Hitchcock film.  But the original novella, by Daphne du Maurier, had a lot of interesting source material. Alfred Hitchcock used it as his jumping-off point and told a story that was somewhat different from the novella. We took that same approach and went back to the source material rather than going to his film."

As far as how they'd approach remaking Tobe Hooper's POLTERGEIST? "POLTERGEIST was a seminal film for us, you know, in our lives, and it’s like your dad’s classic vintage car that’s been in the garage and you’re not allowed to touch it," says White.  "It's treasured; it's valuable.  We see POLTERGEIST as if, um, as if we’re being handed the keys to the car and we're gonna be really careful with it. POLTERGEIST was a real snapshot of the American family in the year that it came out --1982 -- and I think what we would do with the reimagining of it is, 'What is the American family up to today?'"

Vadim Perelman is currently attached to direct the new POLTERGEIST. Read more of the interview at the original news post HERE!

Borchers (who is helming the 2009 remake) and directed by Fritz Kiersch, CHILDREN OF THE CORN stars ‘80s sensations Linda Hamilton (Terminator) and Peter Horton (“thirtysomething”) as a young couple who find themselves stranded in the isolated community of Gatlin, Nebraska. Vintage Video: The Making-Of LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III!

After posting our extensive interview with director Jeff Burr, I've been pretty nostalgic for all things LEATHERFACE. Seriously, I love that movie and I have such fond memories of my experience seeing it! With that said, I found this wonderful vintage video on You Tube. (God bless you, You Tube!) It's a 10 minute behind-the-scenes making-of featurette on LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III! It features interview segments with director Burr, stars William Butler & Kate Hodge, Leatherface himself R. A. Mihailoff doing what he does best. Also of note - Kane Hodder (yes, Jason Voorhees from FRIDAY'S 7-10) was the stunt coordinator on LEATHERFACE, so he pops up on camera too! Check it out below!

Shawnee Smith Returns As Amanda For SAW VI!

With the upcoming starting shoot date of SAW VI set to kick off in Toronto on March 30th, producer Mark Burg let slip some interesting news to the Official SAW website that I'm sure will please all the die-hard fans. "Shawnee Smith [Amanda] is in SAW VI. There are several new characters. Also, this movie is a lot more violent than the previous five. Lastly, we have traps that pit victims against each other like the opening of SAW V. Could be the best script yet!"

More violent then the previous 5?! Shawnee Smith back as Amanda?! (In flashbacks, obviously) Hopefully it'll be a bit better then SAW V. (And maybe we can get back to punishing the morally corrupt instead of killing a bunch of cops like in the last 2 movies?)

Long time SAW editor Kevin Greutert directs the latest sequel SAW VI from a script by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (SAW IV, SAW V, FEAST 1-3). We assume Tobin Bell will be back as Jigsaw (for flashback sequences), as well as Costas Mandylor. More on SAW 6 when we hear it!

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE - "PIRATE" COMMENTARY FOR 'NIGHTWING'!

Since the FRIGHT NIGHT pirate commentary went over so well, the gang here at ICONS thought we'd give you another treat- this time delving deep into the genre treasure chest with a little gem from 1979-- NIGHTWING! Billed at the time as "JAWS with wings", it actually has more in common with "nature runs amok" flicks such as PROPHECY, though far more subtle. NIGHTWING fan Jack Morrissey recently reunited the film's stars NICK MANCUSO and STEPHEN MACHT for an ultra rare screening at the Nuart theater in Los Angeles. We say "ultra rare" because the film has never screened anywhere since 1979! In fact, it's not even on DVD! It went over great with a packed full house. Amazing how a film seen in your youth can stay with you. Prior to the screening, Nick Mancuso recorded a pirate commentary moderated by Jeremy Smith, aka Mr. Beaks of AIN'T IT COOL NEWS fame. These two guys kept it moving the entire time, providing insights into not only the film, but the state of genre films circa 1979 in general. It's a fun listen, whether you listen to it solo, or timed to a copy of NIGHTWING. If you go that route, you're gonna have to dig online for an old VHS copy, or one of the bootlegs of the laser disc. Shame Columbia hasn't seen fit to put this out on DVD. Hopefully, with this pirate commentary floating around, they will finally see the light of day and do so. Enjoy! - Tim Sullivan

Johnny Depp's DARK SHADOWS Still Active!

Last June, we had reported that Johnny Depp's film company Infinitum-Nihil along with Graham King's GK Films and Warner Bros had been planning a new feature version of DARK SHADOWS based on the classic television series. Since then, no updates on the project... that is, until now.

Sam Sarkar, Infinitum's director of development spoke with MTV and confirmed that Depp is "indeed" still attached to play Barnabus Collins. Early rumors indicated that long-time Depp friend & collaborator Tim Burton would be directing the updated DARK SHADOWS. Sarker told MTV, "I can neither confirm nor deny that. But I know it’s out there in the ether." Currently, Burton is wrapping up his version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, which Depp had a part in. Sarker also said, "The studio will be making some announcements regarding it pretty soon. Very soon, probably."

DARK SHADOWS premiered on ABC in 1966. Gothic romance, ghost stories, plots involving vampires, zombies and time-travel—the daytime soap had it all, and it became a runaway hit for the network over 1,225 episodes. The task facing producers is simply finding a way to shape a movie around such abundant, wide-ranging material. "It was a soap opera—it was a daily show," Sarkar told MTV. "That’s something people forget. It’s one thing to adapt a weekly television series into a movie—it’s another thing to take a soap opera that’s been serialized daily and try to boil it down to two hours. I think it will be very true to the spirit of ‘Dark Shadows, I think there’s going to be an authenticity to it."

CBS's 'HARPER'S ISLAND' Debuts April 9th! Press Release & Stills!

HARPER'S ISLAND is a 13-episode murder mystery about a group of family and friends who travel to a secluded island for a destination wedding. They've come to laugh... to love... and, though they don't know it... to die. Henry, the boy next door, is marrying the woman of his dreams, Trish Wellington, a beautiful and wealthy heiress. But as the wedding week begins, people start dying. Every episode, someone is killed. Wedding guests and island locals, every person is a suspect. No one is safe. No one can be trusted. Beginning Thursday, April 9th, and airing each Thursday at 10:00pm ET/PT through July, 2nd, the series is Executive Produced by Jon Turteltaub and Jeffrey Bell, and stars Katie Cassidy (Supernatural) as “Trish Wellington,” Elaine Cassidy (The Others) as “Abby Mills,” and Christopher Gorham (Ugly Betty) as “Henry Dunn.” Check out the official website at: http://www.harpersglobe.com

HARPER’S ISLAND CHARACTER BIOS

MADISON ALLEN - "The Flower Girl" (played by Cassandra Sawtell)

Madison Allen is Shea and Richard’s daughter. She’s cute, sweet and, at times, horribly spooky. Lots of kids enjoy mischief; Madison might enjoy it a little too much. She has a tendency to say things that indicate she has a better idea about what’s happening on Harper’s Island than the adults do. She knows something they don’t… something bad.

RICHARD ALLEN - "The Brother-in-Law" (played by David Lewis)

Richard Allen is Shea’s husband, a guy who married into the Wellington family and business and lives everyday with that fact hanging over his head. Henry sees Richard as an example of what not to become – a meek subordinate who has completely broken under the thumb of Mr. Wellington. Richard keeps his severe contempt for Mr. Wellington under wraps, but is already in the process of taking revenge on the man who has made his life so miserable.

SHEA ALLEN - "The Maid of Honor" (played by Gina Holden)

Shea Allen is Trish’s big sister and the Matron of Honor. From the outside, she appears to have it all – a great husband, a beautiful daughter and all the money in the world. But nothing is as it seems. There are problems in her marriage and her daughter Madison is acting out. The stress of keeping up appearances has Shea trapped in a life she never wanted for herself.

BETH BARRINGTON - "The Single Girl" (played by Amber Borycki)

Beth Barrington is a bridesmaid and Trish’s former college roommate. She’s beautiful, energetic and athletic. Though she didn’t grow up as privileged as Trish, she’s very comfortable in that world.

NIKKI BOLTON - "The Biker Chick" (played by Ali Liebert)

Nikki Bolton is an old friend of Abby’s who lives on the island and manages The Cannery, a bar on the island. She’s a tough, sexy, straight-talking local who doesn’t back down from confrontation. She’s thrilled Abby’s back on the island, and looks forward to having fun while the wedding party’s in town.

JOEL BOOTH - "The Nerd" (played by Sean Rogerson)

Joel Booth is a groomsman. Everyone calls him “Booth.” He is a loyal friend who lacks some of the social graces of the other groomsmen. His hypochondria amuses his friends to no end.

DANNY BROOKS - "The College Buddy" (played by Brandon Jay McClaren)

Danny Brooks is a groomsman and one of Henry’s best friend’s from college. Danny is the sensitive guy in the group. He’s thoughtful and always wants to do the right thing. Danny feels things deeply, and when he senses injustice, he can’t walk away, but has to try and make things right.

CHLOE CARTER - "The Flirt" (played by Cameron Richardson)

Chloe Carter is one of Trish’s bridesmaids. She’s sexy, playful, impulsive and always looking for ways to live life to the fullest. She has a surprising curiosity about serial killers, especially John Wakefield. But beneath the blonde bombshell exterior is an intelligent woman searching for romance and love.

LUCY DARAMOUR & GIGI - "The Socialite" (played by Sarah Smyth)

Lucy is a bridesmaid and one of Trish’s childhood friends. Their families traveled and summered together. Though Lucy is more of a socialite than the other bridesmaids, she’s trying to find her own way in the world by attending law school. Gigi is Lucy’s handbag dog.

HENRY DUNN- “The Groom” (played by Christopher Gorham)

Henry Dunn is a pauper marrying a princess. While growing up, Henry worked summers on Harper’s Island, tending to the boat of real estate mogul Thomas Wellington. Now he returns to the island as the fiancé to the mogul’s beautiful daughter, Trish Wellington. Henry may have won the heart of Trish, but he still faces stern resistance from his soon-to-be father-in-law who disapproves of Henry and would love nothing more than to see this wedding never happen.

J.D. DUNN - "The Black Sheep" (played by Dean Chekvala)

J.D. Dunn is Henry’s brother. He’s a dark and brooding loner with tattoos all over his body that speak more to his true nature than he ever lets on in conversation. Being the only brother of the groom should have made him a lock for “best man,” but J.D.’s barely a guest at the wedding and wouldn’t mind just missing it all together. His childish antics make Henry’s life more difficult, and sometimes there’s a malevolence in them that makes everyone wonder if J.D. has some secret endgame.

UNCLE MARTY DUNN - "The Uncle" (played by Harry Hamlin)

Uncle Marty is a surrogate father to Henry, the only family besides J.D. he has at the wedding. Uncle Marty loves being the center of attention; he started partying sometime in the `70s and just never stopped. But behind his blithe demeanor is someone who cares deeply for Henry, who would do anything to protect him. And behind that is a guy who pops pills when no one is looking while toting around a bag stuffed with bundles of cash and a gun.

HUNTER JENNINGS - "The Other Man" (played Victor Webster)

Hunter Jennings was Trish’s college boyfriend. He’s from a family as affluent as the Wellingtons. He’s exciting and passionate and every bit her equal. He’s also selfish and completely unreliable, which is why Trish broke up with him. But now that she’s getting married, Hunter has shown up uninvited, hoping to convince Trish that he’s the one she should be marrying.

MAGGIE KRELL - "The Wedding Planner" (played by Beverly Elliott)

Maggie Krell is the energetic manager of The Candlewick Inn. She knew Abby, Henry and Trish when they were kids and couldn’t be happier to have them all back… especially for such a special occasion. She’s meticulously planned the week’s events and has more than just a few surprises in store for the wedding party.

JIMMY MANCE - "The Old Flame" (played by C.J. Thomason)

Jimmy Mance is a local fisherman who couldn’t be happier about the Wellington-Dunn wedding coming to Harper’s Island because it brings Abby, his high school sweetheart, back to the island. Jimmy immediately renews his pursuit of Abby, even though he harbors some resentment toward her; in seven years she never wrote or called. The years have been difficult for Jimmy, and he did some things that Abby will find very surprising.

ABBY MILLS -“The Good Girl” (played by Elaine Cassidy)

Abby Mills is a natural beauty in her mid-20s who hails from Harper’s Island. She is the groom’s best friend and his wedding brings her back to the island for the first time since her mother was murdered seven years ago. Abby’s father, the local Sheriff, gunned down the psychopath at the end of his killing spree, but the event shattered Abby’s relationship with her dad and left her haunted by her mother’s death and the memory of the man who killed her.

SHERIFF CHARLIE MILLS - "The Sheriff" (played by Jim Beaver)

Sheriff Mills is the law on Harper’s Island, the man who killed John Wakefield, and Abby’s father. He ended Wakefield’s deadly rampage seven years ago, but not before Wakefield took the life of his wife, Sarah. In his grief, Mills sent Abby away, and now that she’s back for the wedding, he hopes to reconcile with her. But times have changed, and Sheriff Mills has some dark secrets he has no intention of sharing with his daughter.

SHANE PIERCE - “The Townie” (played by Ben Cotton)

Shane Pierce is a Harper’s Island local who pretty much dislikes everyone. He works on a boat with his best friend, Jimmy Mance, and hates that the return of Abby Mills has turned Jimmy into her little whipping boy. He has a particular distaste for Henry Dunn’s brother, J.D., especially after J.D. starts flirting with his ex-girlfriend. Shane’s got a short temper and a history of violence, which makes him capable of just about anything.

MALCOLM ROSS - "The Hustler" (played by Chris Gauthier)

Malcolm Ross is a groomsman. He’s a big, boisterous guy who not only brings his own beer to a party, but he brews it himself. Malcolm is trying to start up a business to mass-produce his microbrew, Sacred Turtle. His friends are very supportive emotionally, but lack the funds to finance his endeavor. His inability to raise capital has put a lot of stress on Malcolm, and made him desperate enough to do things his friends would never suspect.

KELLY SEAVER - "The Outcast" (played Ana Mae Routledge)

Kelly Seaver has a unique connection with Abby; both of their mothers were killed by John Wakefield. But where Abby left the island, Kelly stayed behind and has never gotten over her mother’s murder. She’s struggled with depression and suicide attempts and a secret belief that John Wakefield is still alive and coming back for her.

CHRISTOPHER “SULLY” SULLIVAN - "The Best Man" (played by Matt Barr)

Sully is Henry’s best man. All of his friends call him Sully, and he has lots of friends. He’s a fun-loving frat boy at heart whose good buddies live vicariously through his many sexual escapades. He’s been Henry’s best friend since high school, but it’s questionable if he’s at the wedding more for Henry’s benefit or for the bachelor party and bridesmaids, particularly when he gets and eyeful of Chloe.

CAL VANDEUSEN - "The Outsider" (played by Adam Campbell)

Cal Vandeusen is Chloe’s boyfriend and a doctor. He’s a charming British outsider who doesn’t know anyone in the wedding party, but tries to fit in with the tight knit group. He treats Chloe like gold, and bought an engagement ring before ever stepping foot on Harper’s Island. As he waits for the right moment to pop the question, things keep getting in the way and at times the frustration causes his “nice guy” demeanor to fall away and reveal something darker.

KATHERINE WELLINGTON - "The Stepmother" (played by Claudette Mink)

Katherine Wellington is the very definition of a trophy wife; a sexy woman closer in age to her stepdaughters than her husband. Trish resents her, but Shea tolerates her because she makes their dad happy. But considering Katherine’s secret dark desires, that might not be for long.

THOMAS WELLINGTON - "The Father of the Bride" (played by Richard Burgi)

Thomas Wellington is the father-of-the bride. He’s a conservative real estate mogul. He only wants the best for his daughter; but as far as he’s concerned that doesn’t involve marrying Henry Dunn. Mr. Wellington is accustomed to getting his way, and plans on stopping this wedding at all costs.

TRISH WELLINGTON – “The Bride” (played by Katie Cassidy)

Trish Wellington is the radiant bride-to-be who loves Henry Dunn with all of her heart and can’t wait to marry him. Money is no object for a Wellington, so Trish’s perfect wedding comes in the form of a grand week-long stay on Harper’s Island, full of activities, food and fun for her family and closest friends. Trish doesn’t care about Henry’s lack of pedigree, but she is “Daddy’s Little Girl” and finds herself torn between the two men in her life.

THE CANNERY is the island tavern for locals. It’s a rustic dive-bar filled with islanders and fisherman, and not always welcoming to outsiders like the wedding party.

THE CANDLEWICK INN is a boutique hotel that was built back in the early 1900s during prohibition. It is a charming, cozy, picturesque inn with gorgeous landscaping that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It is the perfect place for a romantic, destination wedding, but the Candlewick Inn has a few secrets of its own.

Writer Tapped For LOST BOYS 3!

Bloody-Disgusting reports that veteran TV writer Evan Charnov (who most recently penned & produced FEARLESS, a TV movie with Rachel Leigh Cook & Ian Somerhalder) has been tapped to write the screenplay for LOST BOYS 3. After all, LOST BOYS: THE TRIBE (aka LOST BOYS 2) did decent business on DVD for Warner Premiere (despite what you may have thought of the movie). B-D also says that Corey Feldman is co-producing and that his character Edgar Frog will be the focus of the second sequel. Don't expect Corey Haim to come back, but Moviehole adds that you'll most likely see Jamison Newlander returning as Alan Frog. (Hope he's not a vampire like in the un-used alternate ending for TRIBE). More when we hear it!

ALL ABOUT EVIL In Production! Starring Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Dekker & Cassandra "ELVIRA" Peterson!

ALL ABOUT EVIL IS CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION! NATASHA LYONNE, THOMAS DEKKER, CASSANDRA "ELVIRA" PETERSON, MINK STOLE, JACK DONNER AND MORE GET BLOODY BY THE BAY WITH WRITER / DIRECTOR JOSHUA GRANNELL (AKA PEACHES CHRIST)!

San Francisco, CA, Tuesday, March 17th, 2009---

Production has kicked into high-horror gear as Joshua Grannell is shooting his first feature film ALL ABOUT EVIL in March. Grannell has written the EVIL script and is directing the dark comedy, set in San Francisco.

ALL ABOUT EVIL centers around a mousy librarian, who has inherited her father's beloved but failing old movie house. In order to save the family business she discovers her inner serial killer -- and a legion of rabid gore fans -- when she starts turning out a series of grisly shorts. What her fans don't realize yet is that the murders in the movies are all too real.

Grannell is in his 12th year of producing and hosting MIDNIGHT MASS, a midnight movie film series/show/phenomenon sponsored by Landmark Theatres. Next to the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, it's the country’s biggest and longest running midnight movie series. Joshua Grannell is best known by his drag queen alter-ego PEACHES CHRIST, a cult cinema icon best known in the world of underground cinema.

A motley crew of talent has been assembled to make ALL ABOUT EVIL a cult classic like no other, including stars Natasha Lyonne (SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS, BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER, DIE MOMMIE DIE) and Thomas Dekker (TV’s HEROES, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES), Cassandra “Elvira Mistress of the Dark” Peterson, Mink Stole (HAIRSPRAY, CRY BABY, SERIAL MOM), Noah Segan (BRICK, DEADGIRL), Jack Donner (STAR TREK, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), Julie-Caitlin Brown (BABYLON 5, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION) and PEACHES CHRIST.

Also on board for ALL ABOUT EVIL are producer Darren Stein (writer / director of JAWBREAKER), director of photography Tom Richmond (PALINDROMES, NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST, CHOPPING MALL, HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES), and costume designer Frank Helmer (BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER, DEBS, EPIC MOVIE). On the San Francisco front are producers Brian Benson (FULL GROWN MEN, HAIKU TUNNEL), and Debbie Brubaker (LA MISSION, DARWIN AWARDS, DOPAMINE).

Following in the footsteps of last year’s independent films MILK and LA MISSION, ALL ABOUT EVIL will be filmed entirely on location in the San Francisco Bay Area where fog and blood make for the perfect EVIL back-drop.

THE LANDLORD Teaser Trailer & Official Website!

We recently got the press release for THE LANDLORD, a low-budget horror comedy about a landlord with the tenants from hell! (Demons!) Check out the teaser trailer below, and the official website at: www.thelandlordmovie.com. No word on screenings yet. (The site seems to only list screenings of the trailer, but not the full length?)

The Landlord is the story of Tyler, the unfortunate young proprietor of a demon-haunted apartment building.

While finding tenants has never been a problem for Tyler, keeping them alive long enough to pay rent is.   No matter how nicely Tyler asks, he cannot keep the demons from eating the renters (or persuade them to wait a month or two, even …). They never listen.  And why should they?  They have an all-you-can-eat buffet of delicious human flesh and Tyler as their pet monkey.  But all that might change when Tyler takes a liking to the newest tenant, a desperate young woman running from demons of her own.

Filmed on location in Chicago in HD video for less than most productions spend on catering, The Landlord features a smart screenplay, impressive performances from some of Chicago’s top stage actors, and surprisingly good effects for its budget.   With its mix of gore and laughs, comparisons to Shaun of the Dead and Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners are inevitable. But The Landlord also harkens back to old-school supernatural thrillers like Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, when character development mattered as much as character dismemberment. By turns hilarious and disturbing, gut-churning and gut-busting, The Landlord is a quirky standout in an independent horror scene glutted with backyard zombie flicks and cookie-cutter slashers. Written & directed by Emil Hyde.

Joe Lynch's... LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT?!

With Dennis Iliadis's THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT now playing in theaters and doing respectable box-office business, one has to wonder how the filmmakers decided to update this story made famous by Wes Craven's debut film. (Remember, Craven's version is also a loose remake of THE VIRGIN SPRING.) I'm sure there were probably multiple versions being considered for the remake before the producers settled on the script by Adam Alleca & Carl Ellsworth, which became the version most of you readers saw on the big screen this past weekend.

But... while combing through the personal blog of filmmaker Joe Lynch, I found what I consider to be a really interesting take on LAST HOUSE, one that I personally would've liked to have seen.

Lynch has posted his full presentation (complete with test video and storyboards) for how he would've "updated" THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. This was his actual pitch for the film back in 2006, which would've set it in a more common, easily identifiable (and relatable) backyard & house in the suburbs. Can you imagine LAST HOUSE taking place on a dead-end street of a regular suburb, like the one you live in? The heartbreaking and brutal rape taking place in the girl's backyard a mere few feet away from her unbeknownst father upstairs? Or the 'murder in the lake' scene happening in a neighbor's backyard pool? Go the the following link to see & read for yourself:

http://homepage.mac.com/avjoe/LHOTL/LHOTL%20presentation.html

Keep in mind, it is not our intention to belittle or compare this to the work of the filmmakers behind the current remake. It's just a really cool "might've/could've been" look from a filmmaker that we personally admire.

You can read more about the presentation over at Joe's blog at: http://drjoemommalynch.blogspot.com/

We also conducted a lengthy interview with Joe Lynch when his debut feature WRONG TURN 2 came out on DVD. Check that out HERE or by clicking the frame below!

DRAG ME TO HELL Reactions! Sam Raimi On More EVIL DEAD & SPIDER-MAN 4!

Sam Raimi's new film DRAG ME TO HELL just played this weekend at the SXSW and is getting overly positive praise from fanboys, critics and audience members alike! Among some of the highlights, check out Ain't It Cool's report HERE and HERE. (Love the title to the 2nd article) Dread Central's got a review HERE. Shock Till You Drop's initial reactions are HERE.

As usual, Raimi got talking about all things EVIL DEAD after the SXSW screenings. Here's what I can gather from his various quotes, because as usual, it's goes back & forth between an EVIL DEAD remake and an EVIL DEAD 4:

He tells IGN, "I have talked with my partners about having a young director come in and remake Evil Dead. That film was made in 16mm on a shoestring budget and blown up to 35mm. The visual effects are crumby, it was done in mono, not even stereo, let alone 5.1. What you could do with it now would be so much better. I think if you had a new director using the full power of 35mm and 5.1 sound, you could really make a pretty socko presentation. It was always meant for the big screen, but never really seen on the big screen."

While he told IGN that he'd like to remake EVIL DEAD, he mentioned to Ain't It Cool News that SPIDER-MAN 4 is next for him and that "his plans are to finally knock out EVIL DEAD 4 right after the next SPIDER-MAN film."

IGN brought up EVIL DEAD 4 to Bruce Campbell several months back and said he's hesitant to reprise the role of Ash after seeing INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. Raimi answered that by saying, "I liked Indy 4. He's probably just trying to get out of getting in shape! Like any movie it's hard to say if you want to do it or if you don't want to do it until there is a script to talk about. So one day I hope to have the time to write a script, and if that happens I'm hoping that Bruce will change his mind."

Since SPIDER-MAN 4 is next, what's the status of that blockbuster sequel? Raimi tells MTV "The writers, producers and I are working out what the story will be, but we haven’t been talking in terms of Part 4 and 5. I’ve read that [about 'Spider-Man 5’] also, but right now we’re just working on the story for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ just that one film. We’re definitely talking about working from all the material in the comic books and nothing [invented] outside of that. All the characters or villain or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee’s creations or those that came after him."

More when we hear it! Raimi's next DRAG ME TO HELL hits theaters on May 29th, 2009! Check out the trailer and 12 images HERE! Directed by Sam Raimi and Co-written with brother Ivan Raimi, DRAG ME TO HELL stars Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver, Jessica Lucas, David Paymer, Dileep Rao & Reggie Lee.

Adam Marcus Helming RKO 'I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE' Remake!

Several months back, we reported that Rosebud & Twisted Pictures were producing 4 new remakes of classic RKO pictures. Now, the first of the bunch has landed a director. Adam Marcus, the director of JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY will direct I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE from a script he co-wrote with Debra Sullivan according to Variety. "Adam and Deborah have created a chilling screenplay that along with Adam's vision would make Lewton proud," Fickman told Variety.

The article continues, "The film focuses on a private tutor who discovers a terrifying family secret while working at the ancient estate of a New Orleans businessman. The original was a forerunner of the corps of walking corpse films that followed. Hartley called the film one of the most valuable in the RKO library. RKO's Ted Hartley will produce with Twisted's Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Carl Mazzocone. Andy Fickman, who recently pacted with Roseblood and Twisted to oversee four remakes, will be exec producer Betsy Sullenger, his partner in their Oops Doughnuts production banner."

Those other remakes include the Robert Wise-directed Bela Lugosi-Boris Karloff starrer “THE BODY SNATCHER” (1945); the Mark Robson-directed Karloff starrer “BEDLAM” (1946); and the John Farrow-directed Lucille Ball-John Carradine starrer “FIVE CAME BACK” (1939).

WATCHMEN Co-Writer David Hayter Forms DARK HERO STUDIOS!

Variety reports that writer David Hayter (co-writer on WATCHMEN, X-MEN, X2) and producer Benedict Carver have teamed up to form Dark Hero Studios, "a company that will generate film, TV, Internet and vidgame projects in the action, sci-fi and horror genres."

The article continues, "Formation of the company comes as Hayter prepares to make his directorial debut on his werewolf thriller script "SLAUGHTER'S ROAD," with Carver producing along with Steven Paul through Crystal Sky Prods. Production begins in the summer. Hayter said Thomas Dekker (TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNER CHRONICLES) will star, and Ray Stevenson (HBO's ROME, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE) is in talks to star alongside Dekker."

"Dark Hero begins its slate of projects with "DEMONOLOGY," which Hayter wrote and will direct, and the company will set up graphic novels, comic books, vidgame properties and original genre scripts for movie treatment. Sarah Freudeman will be Dark Hero's director of development. Carver and Hayter said they will tie down independent financing shortly, setting up a company that will finance through pre-sales and equity so that Dark Hero can hang onto negative ownership and build a library of films.

"Many people would love to have the studio-based producer gig, but if you want to build asset value through a library, you have to be more entrepreneurial and avoid giving away a lot of rights upfront," Carver said. "David will create, write and direct movies and TV series for the company, but he'll also be a magnet for other writers and directors to work with us."

Hayter said he hatched "SLAUGHTER'S ROAD" after he was offered a slew of werewolf movies and found enough flaws in each to never want to make such a pic; genre-savvy friends changed his mind. Hayter's "DEMONOLOGY" grew out of his experiences attending an international high school in Japan. "It's about an American kid who goes to one of these schools in Belgium, but it brings my own horrible experiences of school to life," Hayter said.

More on SLAUGHTER'S ROAD and DEMONOLOGY when we hear it!

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - DIRECTOR JEFF BURR!

Just added! A FRIGHT exclusive interview with director JEFF BURR! Words can not express how much I love LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III. When I was roughly about 14 years old, I waited for hours outside my local theater until someone would pretend to be my "guardian" to sneak me in. And from then on, I continued to follow the career of the film's director Jeff Burr. It wasn't too difficult. After all, Burr had helmed several franchise sequels through out the 90's, all of which I sought out such as STEPFATHER II, PUMPKINHEAD II: BLOOD WINGS & PUPPET MASTER 4 & 5. I eventually went back to discover his underrated anthology debut THE OFFSPRING (aka FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM). Most recently, I checked out EDDIE PRESLEY and STRAIGHT INTO DARKNESS, 2 great independent films that truly round out the career of such a diverse & prolific filmmaker.

Jeff was kind enough to sit down with Mike and I to discuss candidly in great detail all of the above movies. We got the full scoop on making LEATHERFACE, heard stories about Vincent Price and LOST's Terry O'Quinn, talked about NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW and got the real story on the behind the scenes of THE DEVIL'S DEN. FRIGHT fans, this is one of our finest interviews. Click the frame or images below to read it!

HOLY TERROR!: 11 Creepy Catholic Horror Films

HOLY TERROR: The Catholic Church in Modern Horror Cinema

The Roman Catholic Church has been an inspiration for the macabre and terrifying for, well, centuries. Most recently there was a revival in interest in the religious, supernatural horror film in the early to mid 2000's in a cycle that ran from Stigmata to The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Horror rose to prominence and box office success in the 1970's with a long running series of films peppered with deeply religious themes. The church was under scrutiny in The Omen. a willing participant in the phenomenon that was The Exorcist. Beyond the obvious possession, Antichrist, and exorcism themed ripoffs there was the unique and internationally successful Blind Dead series with this undead crusading Templar Knights. The sleazy child murders of Fulci's Don't Torture A Ducking and the American giallo Alice, Sweet, Alice both featured heavy Catholic overtones. Further back we find the Church and the horrors of the Inquisition serving as inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe's The Pit And Pendulum. The Church has even served as sanctuary for our beautiful, misunderstood monsters like Quasimodo. With it's Gothic cathedrals, supernatural rites, secret societies, and place as a constant lightening rod for controversy it's no surprise that the Roman Catholic church continues to function as a fertile breeding ground for tales of terror.

For several writers here at Icons of Fright our Italian and Catholic upbringing (we can count 2 former altar boys among our staff) means that films featuring the dark and creepy side Catholicism are often remarkably effective. Here we take a look back several films that touched upon these theme. Some you will have heard of, several more obscure. A few are obvious in their exploration of the Church, while others touch upon it in a more subtle, chilling manner.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET SERIES

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child“The bastard son of a hundred maniacs”

The origin of Freddy Krueger and his evolution from child-murderer to dream bound demon is far more the result of an abusive childhood. His conception was the result of the horrific rape of Amanda Krueger, a Catholic nun at the hands of hundreds of mentally ill prisoners in a madhouse. This was brutally portrayed in the 5th entry, “The Dream Child”, but more hauntingly explored through the implied presence of Amanda's ghost in “The Dream Warriors”. The very evil that fuels Krueger seems to have manifested itself from the defilement and destruction of one of the church's most powerful symbols of purity in one of the more unsettling elements of a series most notable for it's campy death scenes.

THE CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (AKA THE GATES OF HELL)

City of the Living Dead aka Gates of HellLucio Fulci's take on Lovecraftian horror opens with one of the Maestro's most striking images. Over the opening credits a priest tosses a noose around the branch of a tree and hangs himself. From a director noted for his ability to splatter buckets of guts across the a frame it is a surprisingly restrained death (certainly far more so than what is yet to come in the film). Yet it sets the stage for what is arguably Fulci's creepiest. The story is a bit convoluted, involving reanimated corpses, revived telepaths, and the very gateway to hell being opened. The film is also remembered for a scene in which the malevolent spirit of the dead priest causes a woman to regurgitate her internal organs. In the correct anatomical order, no less...

THE SENTINEL

The SentinelOften dismissed as a come-lately entry in the 1970's religious horror cycle. However, THE SENTINEL features plenty of whacked out weirdness for any fan of surreal horror to enjoy. Christina Raines stars as model Alison Parker who moves into a beautiful, scenic, and remarkably cheap brownstone in Brooklyn. Amenities include birthday parties for cats; the ashen walking corpse of her dead father, and the portal to hell (no, real hell, not Williamsburg) in the basement. Her tenants are a strange old man (played by the strange old Burgess Meredith) who walks around with a parakeet, a pair of lycra clad lesbians, and a blind old priest who occupies the top floor. They turn out to be spirits of dead psychopaths, quietly leaking out of the portal at night. For her end of the bargain Alison need only provide one months rent and a security deposit on her immortal soul. That's the price when your landlord turns out to be the Catholic church who rent it out every few decades to attract the next “sentinel” to guard the portal. After all that old blind priest isn't going to live forever... The film has a great cast too, featuring familiar faces like Chris Sarandon, Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Walken showing up in early roles, plus veteren actors like John Carradine, Ava Gardner, Jerry Orbach, Eli Wallach, and Sylvia Miles thrown in to class it up a bit. (Wow, a cast like that in the 70's and I'm almost surprised an earthquake, fire, flood, crashing airplane or sinking ship wasn't thrown in for good measure!)

THE EXORCIST

The ExorcistNo article on the Catholic influence in horror could be complete without it. The influence is obvious. Far more interesting is that the church actually cooperated with the production. The power of “The Exorcist” remains powerfully frightening not just as a result of the actors, the story, or the special effects. For those who follow the Catholic faith the film is also extremely authentic in it's portrayal of the religion. This was no accident. Serving as a technical advisor was Rev. William O'Malley, a Jesuit priest and teacher. O'Malley also played the part of Father Dyer.

THE EXORCIST III

The Exorcist IIIFor most audiences John Boorman's THE HERETIC: EXORCIST II ranks as an epic fail (although it does have fans, including Martin Scorsese so I do consider myself in good company). It's a visually exciting movie that unfortunately happens to have an incomprehensible narrative with a strange New Age/psychological bent. And it's not scary, at all. This is a terrible shame because the bad taste left by EXORCIST II lasted long enough for this sequel based on William Peter Blatty's novel LEGION, the true follow up, to be sadly dismissed upon it's release, overlooked for years by fans.

However as many filmmakers and critics alike now cite EXORCIST III as one of best horror films of the 1980's fans have started to come around. Adapted from the novel by Blatty who also directs, starts off as a murder mystery, almost a police procedural. Lt. Kinderman (George C. Scott) is investigating the brutal killing of a boy, whose murder fits the style of the long dead Gemini killer. The killing quickly get closer to the Catholic church as a priest is violently murdered in a confessional. Father Dyer, now a close friend of Kinderman is decapitated in a secure hospital, all without a drop of blood spilled. As Kinderman investigates he finds himself spiraling closer to closer to the events of 1973, but why? It's as smart and worthwhile a follow-up to the legendary horror film as you're ever going to see.

The film is unusual in it's depiction of the church, with the emphasis here on the humanity of the clergy. Religion is rarely the topic when we see them. Dyer and Kinderman's friendship is rooted in their mutal affection for movies. Rarely in horror have clergyman been portrayed as the 'ordinary man in the extraordinary situation'. The movie is creepy and scary in way that's more quiet and subdued than it's predecessors. However it does have one scare, that while best left unspoiled, might be the single most effective jump-scare in horror history. Gets me every time.

[REC]

[REC]

SPOILER WARNING!

For close to 80 minutes the Spanish flick [REC] is nothing short of intense and truly scary. Shot-on-camcorder it's “28 Days Later” meets your worst claustrophobic nightmare come true. Finally in the last reel it happened, they did it. They brought in The Catholic Shit. I didn't see it coming but when our remaining survivors enter a previously locked room full of articles and tapes with details from The Vatican, and something even more terrifying and alive. I've rarely been so completely creeped out. Does Quarantine do that? (No.)

STIGMATA

StigmataThe 1990s were a boring time for horror, and with supernatural horror in particular. STIGMATA offered something different in the last year of the decade. A minor hit, with Medium star Patricia Arquette in the lead, it was not surprisingly lumped in with a few other “end of the millennium, end of the world” religious clunkers like Lost Souls or End of Days (probably due in no small amount to the fact that Gabriel Bryne starred as Satan in End of Days and in Stigmata as our lead priest). Critics were mixed, Roger Ebert called it “possibly the funniest movie ever made about Catholicism”. Like much of 90's horror it may seem comparatively tame to the possession movies of the 1970's, but it's certainly worth a second look.

ALICE, SWEET, ALICE

Alice, Sweet, AliceI'll go ahead and argue that “Alice, Sweet Alice” is the first American giallo. The structure and the sleaziness is all there, not to mention Alfred Sole's Italian-American pedigree. The movie looks like it was spliced together from the super-8 home movies my parents took in the 70's (well, minus the child murdering, and transvestite landlords. Those are Rob G's home movies.) Whether this film fits the structure of a giallo or not is an argument for a different article, however. The film is so Catholic you can smell the incense and taste the communion wafers. The film centers around one of the most horrifying murders ever portrayed on screen: A young girl (Brooke Shields!) strangled, locked in a box, and set on fire. In church. At her first Holy Communion. The murder is discovered as the smoke and fumes her body body waft through the church. Wow.

THE CONVENT

The ConventSome people think religion is silly, and there's certainly room enough for that as evidenced by Mike Mendez's THE CONVENT, which is something like a slapstick version of Fulci's DEMONIA meets NIGHT OF THE DEMONS. The restless spirits of demonic nuns come back to possess a batch of college students unlucky enough to trespass and party on the grounds of their abandoned convent. Look—in the first five minutes of this movie a hive of Satanic nuns are machined gunned, burnt alive, and hit with a baseball bat. This isn't just a movie, it's therapy for Catholic school graduates. Adrienne Barbeau stars, along with a young Liam Kyle Sullivan (YouTuber's and shoe fetishist know him best today as his comedic alter ego “Kelly”).

AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION

Amityville II: The PossessionBased on the real true story of Amityville: The murder of the DeFeo family by their son Ronald, which preceded the supernatural events of the first movie. This prequel finds the family, renamed the Montelli (Burt Young and Rutanya Alda as Mom and Dad) family, moving into the infamous Long Island home. The already dysfunctional Italian-American family is further torn apart as the house does the thing it does best. The oldest kid, Sonny, is eventually possessed by the house ghosts and he quickly works his way toward a violent bloodbath, and an inevitable encounter with a priest armed with a copy The Roman Ritual and a bottle of holy water.

Yep, this is a trashy movie, and so it should surprise no one that it's largely an Italian production (with the director having the coolest goddamn name a horror director ever had: Damiano Damiani). While it is a bit sleazy in it's way it depicts the deterioration and murder of a faithful Catholic family at the hands of their oldest child it is a much scarier movie that the first. It's much a more kinetic and frightening haunted house movie, The film brings on the Catholic when Mom brings in a priest to bless the house. The third act of the film is largely an EXORCIST ripoff, but it works.

PRINCE OF DARKNESS

John Carpenter's Prince of DarknessHow vastly underrated is John Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS, a fascinating combination of science-fiction and religious horror? Can you name another movie that blends fluid dynamics and faith? It's another victim of what we at Icons loosely refer The Carpenter Curse, in which the majority of Carpenter's post-”Halloween” movies begin to be appreciated only 10+ years after their original release. In PRINCE OF DARKNESS a group of graduate students spend a night in a church with a unique object stored in the basement: A vat of pure evil. A glass jar within which swims the very essence of evil, perhaps even Lucifer himself and it has sprung a leak. There's also some kind of mysterious transmission, coming through in dreams, that implies that these scientists had better figure out a way to plug this thing up. Fans have always been mixed on this film, and many have poked fun at it's premise but I find it incredibly eerie, moody and grim (enhanced by one of Carpenter's signature scores). This movie is finally coming into it's own as one of Mr. Carpenter's best works,as fans begin to look beyond the idea of evil housed in what looks like canister of grapeade and see the intelligence behind the story. Regardless of what your reaction to it may it, there's little doubt Carpenter crafted of the more unique entries in 80's era American horror. (Plus, you get Donald Pleasence as a priest. We're not talking about a man, we're talking about good on two legs!)

Director Not Set For TWILIGHT Sequel ECLIPSE After All?

Despite a Variety piece a few days back confirming that director Juan Antonio Bayona would be helming ECLIPSE, the 3rd film in the TWILIGHT series, Summit Entertainment is speaking out to clear up the rumors. Erik Feig, President of Production at Summit Entertainment told the LA Times "The ECLIPSE directing job hasn’t been offered to Juan Antonio or anyone else. We’ve met with three or four talented filmmakers and we’ll be meeting with three or four more other candidates before we make any decision. No one has been offered the job."

Drew Barrymore, IDENTITY’s James Mangold and Paul Weitz, whose brother Chris is helming the second in the franchise, NEW MOON are all contendors at this point.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA 'NEW MOON' starts shooting later this month with a release date of November 20th, 2009 locked down. Chris Weitz is directing. Dakota Fanning joins returning actors Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. ECLIPSE is scheduled for a June 30th, 2010 release date.

Stephen King's IT Gets Theatrical Remake!

For most of us, Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise The Dancing Clown in the TV mini-series of Stephen King's IT scarred us for life! Well, looks like a new version of King's epic tale will be remade, this time for the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter says, "Dave Kajganich has been hired pen the script, which follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise. When the creature resurfaces, the kids are called upon to regroup again, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle."

Of note from the article - "The novel is set in 1958 and 1985, though the feature version will be set in the present day." (For this reader, the 50's and 80's settings were part of the stories appeal. But let's wait and see how they update it.)

The article continues, ""It" was the best-selling book of 1986 and in 1990 was turned into an ABC miniseries that starred John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Tim Reid, Olivia Hussey, Annette O'Toole and Richard Thomas. Tim Curry played Pennywise." (Let's not forget the terrific kid actors Jonathan Brandis, Seth Green & Emily Perkins!) Lin Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment are producing. More when we hear it!

LonelyGirl15 Stars In WB Web-Series 'BLOOD CELL'!

Remember those LonelyGirl15 You Tube videos? Not sure what ever came of those, or the true intention behind them. (I think it was a promotional stunt for a horror movie.) Regardless, actress Jessica Rose, whom starred as "LonelyGirl15" will next be seen in a new WB.com web-series titled BLOOD CELL, according to a post on The Hollywood Reporter.

The article says, ""Blood Cell," from 60Frames Entertainment, is an 18-Webisode series featuring Rose, best known for the 2006 Internet sensation that made the LonelyGirl15 alias known throughout the Web.

In "Cell," a young woman must race against the clock to stop a sadistic madman after receiving a disturbing late-night phone call from a friend in danger. No premiere date has been set.

UPDATED: ORPHANAGE Director Up For TWILIGHT Sequel ECLIPSE?

UPDATED: It's official. Variety reports that director Juan Antonio Bayona will direct ECLIPSE, the 3rd TWILIGHT film. Full story on Variety's site HERE. Our original post is below:

With THE TWILIGHT SAGA 'NEW MOON' set to begin shooting later this month, and a release date locked on ECLIPSE for June 30th, 2010, Summit Entertainment is apparently looking at potential director's to pick up where Chris Weitz will leave off. Rumors have persisted that Drew Barrymore is a top contender and really would like to helm the second TWILIGHT sequel. However, The Hollywood Reporter brought up another interesting potential director. Juan Antonio Bayona, the filmmaker behind the Spanish horror hit THE ORPHANAGE. Here's the full story:

"Could Summit be going genre with its third "Twilight" pic?

Sources indicate that horror wunderkind -- and Guillermo Del Toro protege -- Juan Antonio Bayona has emerged as one of the finalists to direct "Eclipse," the third movie in Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" franchise.

The studio declined to comment; a rep said producers were looking at a number of candidates.

Bayona's name has come up in recent months, though generally in a group of other directors -- an eclectic list that's ranged from Paul Weitz to Drew Barrymore to James Mangold;earlier today, in fact, a report on the Twilighters fansite reported it would be Paul Weitz.

Many of the other names have been batted down. Bayona's name, on the other hand, has surfaced more in recent days as the man who could land the job, in what would mark a bold departure for the franchise.

If he does come aboard, the studio would have brought on a female coming-of-age girl director in Catherine Hardwicke for the first "Twilight" picture, a mainstream Hollywood comedy director in Chris Weitz for sequel "New Moon" and a genre maven for the third picture.

The shift would make sense on a number of levels -- "Eclipse," while continuing the romances and love triangles of previous books, does contain a mystery of unsolved murders that protags Bella and Edward seek to solve. (Notably, Bayona's debut "The Orphanage" also contained a plotline centering on children who had been killed under mysterious circumstances.) It also features battles between werewolves and vampires that could call for a practiced genre hand.

Bayona, for those who don't follow foreign horror directors, is a hot property -- the 33-year-old Spaniard  who goes mainy by his last name has been championed by  "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Hobbit" director del Toro, who has produced and/or godfathered his work. Bayona received rave reviews for his Spanish-language "Orphanage,' the Picturehouse-released Gothic tale about childhood and loss that was rife with spooks. He's currently signed on to direct the dystopian thriller "Hater" for Universal.

That project was to mark his English-language debut. If he and Summit can make a deal work, he may have some vampires to contend with first."

Is George Romero Involved In THE CRAZIES Remake?!

If you've caught George A. Romero at a convention appearance in the last year or so, he's quick to clarify that he has nothing to do with the remake of his now-classic film THE CRAZIES. Yet, he's still listed as an "executive producer" anytime a new press release goes out. This weekend at the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors in Chicago, he was asked during his panel exactly what his thought were on the new CRAZIES feature and what his involvement is exactly. Thankfully, the fiends over at Dread Central got his quotes!

“I just actually read the script for the first time this weekend while I was here. I was never involved with anything in creating the remake, and I have no involvement with the new version of The Crazies at all. I know they have me listed as one of the Executive Producers on the project, and honestly, I am not sure why.”

Romero added some hope though for those of us looking forward to the update. “What I will say is that based on what I read, there are some really interesting things going on in the movie. I don’t know what their budget is or what the production value will be, but I think [The Crazies] has a decent shot of being a good movie.”

THE CRAZIES remake is currently shooting with Breck Eisner directing from a script by by Scott Kosar and Ray Wright. It stars Timothy Olyphant (HBO's DEADWOOD, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, DREAMCATCHER) and Radha Mitchell (PITCH BLACK, SILENT HILL, ROGUE) and Joe Reegan (JEEPERS CREEPERS 2, VACANCY 2: THE FINAL CUT), Danielle Panabaker (FRIDAY THE 13TH) and Joe Anderson (THE RUINES).

THE CELL 2 Debuting On... Amazon?!

It appears the Direct-To-DVD sequel THE CELL 2 will be debuting on Amazon's website as a video on demand feature on June 23rd. (We imagine this will also be the DVD release date.)

Directed by Tim Iacofano, THE CELL 2 stars Tessie Santiago, Chris Bruno (TV's THE DEAD ZONE), Frank Whaley (VACANCY), Bart Johnson (SIMON SAYS), Elizabeth Barondes, Larry Filion, Charles Halford, Ben Naccarato & Amee Walden.

Here's the synopsis according to the film's IMDB page: "The Cusp is a serial killer who kills his victims and then brings them back to life; over and over again; until they beg to die! Maya is a psychic investigator who gained her powers after a 1 year coma after she was the Cusp's first victim! Now the Cusp Killer is back and Maya has little time to do what she has never done before, go into the mind of a killer unprotected, and save his latest victim."

The follow-up to Richard Kelly's original was directed by Chris Fisher from a script by Nathan Atkins and stars Daveigh Chase (reprising her role as Samantha Darko), Jackson Rathbone (TWILIGHT, DREAD), Briana Evigan (FEAR ITSELF: NEW YEAR'S DAY, SORORITY ROW), Elizabeth Berkley (SHOWGIRLS), Ed Westwick (100 FEET, CHILDREN OF MEN) and Matthew Davis (BELOW, BLOODRAYNE).

FANGORIA also debuted a handful of new images from the film. Below is one of the pics featuring (the totally crush-worthy) Briana Evigan. Click HERE or the image below to see a few more over on FANGO's site.

And in case you missed it, here's the official trailer for S. DARKO: A DONNIE DARKO TALE:

Ruggero Deodato Goes Giallo?

During the masters of Italian horror panel at the currently in progress Chicago Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST director Ruggero Deodato revealed that he's currently playing around with the scripts for 3 (!) giallos! "I have written the scripts for three new giallo movies," he tells FANGORIA. "I am especially fond of one of these scripts. It is a more serious take on the giallo – it is not crazy like some of the recent Dario Argento pictures. It is very realistic although it still has the violence which the fans will expect." Deodato has tackled that particular horror sub-genre once before with PHANTOM OF THE DEATH.

No update on his proposed CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST sequel CANNIBALS. Last we reported, there was a disagreement between Deodato and one of the producers over a scene in the script, something that Deodato refused to budge on. Guess that battle is on-going!

Tour Video Of Bob Burn's AMERICAN WEREWOLF Memorabilia!

Filmmaker Paul Davis recently completed production on his documentary BEWARE THE MOON: REMEMBERING AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, an extensive look back at the landmark werewolf film by John Landis. Fans will be able to watch the 98 minute epic feature when it's paired up with the Blu-Ray release of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON later this year. But not all of the great footage the crew obtained made it into the final cut. Below is a great video Davis just posted via his newly launched blog from the home of horror memorabilia collector Bob Burns. I'll let Paul explain from the entry in his blog:

Waaaaaaay back in June of 2007, while in California to shoot interviews with the likes of John Landis and Rick Baker for BEWARE THE MOON, we were fortunate enough to meet with the wonderful Bob and Kathy Burns and be treated to a tour of Bob's infamous basement. For those of you who don't know, Bob's basement is literally a cave of Hollywood wonders, with original props from the ALIEN franchise, GREMLINS, THE FLY and of course AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.

While at their home we thought it would be a great idea to shoot a mini piece on Bob and his collection, rather than just shoot B-Roll of the props and interview Bob as was originally planned. With this we figured we would be able to 'add value' to a potential DVD re-release of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON somewhere down the line. Well, we were lucky enough to get the documentary secured on the upcoming Blu-Ray release of the movie, but unfortunately the footage we shot at Bob and Kathy's place will not be included on the set.

As a thank you to Bob and Kathy and for all the fans who wouldn't otherwise get to go and see these amazing treasures in person, I've decided to release the footage ON THIS BLOG as an exclusive to all the fans of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and a thank you to all of you that have supported the project and helped us with it's eventual release later this year.

Enjoy!

Note: Apologies for the poor quality. I've had a ton of computer problems today and just wanted to get this online. Turn the speakers on your PC up.

A Look At Bill Moseley In HALLOWEEN 2!

Rob Zombie debuted a picture of Bill Moseley as "Uncle Seymour Coffins", the TV host of the Haddonfield's Creature Double Feature show via his My Space blog. The make-up job is an obvious homage to Vincent Price's "Dr. Death" from MADHOUSE. (And considering Moseley died in the theatrical version of the first HALLOWEEN, I'd imagine covering him with make-up was the easiest way to bring him back without any confusion.) Take a gander below:

You can keep up to date on the production via Rob Zombie's My Space blog at: http://blogs.myspace.com/robzombie.

Rob Zombie returns to write and direct HALLOWEEN 2, which stars Scout Taylor-Compton, Malcolm McDowell, Tyler Mane, Sherri Moon Zombie, Danielle Harris, Brea Grant, Bill Moseley, Caroline Williams, Daniel Roebuck, Dayton Callie, Richard Brake, Matt Bush, Howard Hesseman, Bill Fagerbakke, Ezra Buzzington, Jeff Daniel Phillips & Mark Christopher Lawrence. H2 hits theaters this August 28th!

AMERICA'S BAD KIDS EPISODE 3: RAVEN RILEY!

For the 3rd episode of AMERICA'S BAD KIDS, host John Torrani decided it was time to chat with the girl the bad kids think about when they touch them themselves. That'd be "adult film actress" and horror buff Raven Riley. Besides digging horror, this American "bad girl" produced a "horror/porn" hybrid flick titled SUCCUBUS XXX (also starring cutie Liz Vicious). John checks out the movie and then hangs out with Raven Riley to talk horror in this now-classic episode. Check it out for yourselves! AMERICA'S BAD KIDS EPISODE 3: RAVEN RILEY right down below!

Make sure to come back next Friday for the next episode. If you can't wait, head on over to the official BAD KIDS website at: www.americasbadkids.com. You can also find more episodes at the official My Space page: www.myspace.com/americasbadkidstv.

THE PSYCHO LEGACY - 12 Minute Promotional Footage

An extensive interview with PSYCHO LEGACY director/producer Rob Galluzzo (yours truly) just went up over on the Retroslashers.net website. It's one of the more lengthy & candid chats about the documentary, so have a look by clicking the following link!

http://retroslashers.net/blog/exclusive-interview-with-psycho-legacy-director-robert-galluzzo/

Here's the introduction by site webmaster John Klyza:

"Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO can be considered prime among the progenitors of the slasher genre. Many talk about its impact on the film world, but few pay attention to the second, third and forth chapters which each brought something unique to the compellingly tragic story of Norman Bates. Enter director Robert Galluzzo who has spent the past few years pouring himself into a landmark documentary on the complete saga, aptly titled THE PSYCHO LEGACY. We stole Robert away from his project long enough to discuss all-things PSYCHO!" (Click the image below to read the full interview!)

See some screen-grabs of Anthony Perkins from the documentary at our previous news post HERE!

Young Michael Myers Re-Cast For HALLOWEEN 2!

A few days ago, we published a photo of Daeg Faerch from the set of Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 courtesy of The Ladies Of HALLOWEEN My Space page. The post vaguely mentioned that although the young actor was on set reprising his role of Michael Myers, he'd been re-cast. Faerch later confirmed this via his My Space blog in a post that read, "SADLY, although I was contracted to reprise the role of young Michael Myers in the upcoming H2 (Halloween 2, 2009) after filming briefly on the set in GA, I am to be recast due to my increased height."

Rob himself talked about the re-casting on his blog saying, "I know some of you are confused as to why Daeg is not in the film. Recasting young Michael was not something I wanted to do, but the scenes just didn't work anymore. Daeg is no longer a little boy, he is a teenager with a deep voice. Once you see the film you will understand why I made this choice. It was not an easy choice and was not made lightly. Daeg kicked ass in Halloween, but things change. I think Daeg is very, very talented and I wish him all the best."

RE-ANIMATOR Remake NOT Happening After All?

A few days ago, we posted a story about producer Ray Haboush's intentions to remake Stuart Gordon's classic RE-ANIMATOR (in 3D, no less!). Apparently, the news may not be true after all. Shock Till You Drop caught up with Stuart Gordon and the filmmaker checked in with producer Brian Yuzna to see how valid the project was considering the announcement took him a bit by surprise. Gordon says, "I contacted Brian and he didn't know anything about it. I said, 'What's going with the remake?' And he asked, what remake?"

So Herbert West is safe from the remake cycle... for now. But maybe not from TV! Check out our post from earlier today about the TV series pilot for HERBERT WEST - RE-ANIMATOR: THE SERIES right HERE!

Also check out our FRIGHT exclusive interview with the RE-ANIMATOR himself, JEFFREY COMBS!

Will Jackie Earle Haley Be The New Freddy Krueger?!

Now that Platinum Dunes has a script and director in place for their "reboot" of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and a shooting start date set as well, the next question is... who will don the infamous brown fedora and fingerblade glove? (And please, let's make note that the 61 year old Robert Englund does not want to play the character anymore.) A current fave contender amongst genre fans & most of the on-line journalist community is Jackie Earle Haley (who was nominated for an Oscar for LITTLE CHILDREN back in 2006). While out promoting WATCHMEN (Haley portrays the vigilante Rorschach), IGN caught up with the actor and cornered him about the persistant "Freddy Krueger" rumors! Here's what he had to say:

Meanwhile, Shock Till You Drop is reporting that Andrew Clement will be handling the FX duties on the new NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Shock reports that, "Clement served on the animatronics team behind CLOVERFIELD and was the makeup artist on J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Spider-Man 3." (As well as REPOSSESSION MAMBO due out later this year.) You can check out some of Clement's work at the following link: http://www.creativecharacter.com/index.html

HERBERT WEST - RE-ANIMATOR: THE SERIES?!

Hot on the report that RE-ANIMATOR might be next on the classic genre remake block, FANGORIA got some exclusive pictures AND the synopsis to the proposed TV pilot for HERBERT WEST - RE-ANIMATOR: THE SERIES.

The project is currently in development at William Butler's Transition Films and rather then rehash the story lines of the copyrighted RE-ANIMATOR trilogy, the series would instead serve more as a prequel with episodes culling inspiration from all of H.P. Lovecraft's stories. (The original RE-ANIMATOR is after all based on a Lovecraft short.)

Butler told FANGO, "I was actually brought on board by Meredith Red, who is the show’s main creator and executive producer. I am one of the many writers and producers on the show. We are talking to some high-profile directors to do the pilot, including Stuart Gordon. (FX Artist) John Vulich is also involved."

Below you'll find the complete synopsis. Click the image below to see a few more pictures over on FANGO's site.

What BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER was for Gothic storytelling, HERBERT WEST: RE-ANIMATOR will be for sci-fi and horror.

He’s a teenage Dr. Frankenstein in a modern-day younger world, filled with sometimes terrifying scientific intrigue.

Fall—Freshman Year—Miskatonic University

The campus is finally reopening after 10 years of closure. It seems years ago, a student suddenly possessed with an uncontrollable rage broke out into a violent murder spree that left half the campus up in flames. Officials never found out just what filled the young man with the desire to kill so many.

Herbert West, a dark and mysterious young man, arrives on campus, instantly shining as a brilliant young student and the object of many of his female schoolmates’ desires.

We soon learn that along with his medical school, Herbert also has a secret passion that he relentlessly is pursuing. Late at night when everyone else is gone, Herbert conducts groundbreaking experiments…to learn the secret of life itself…to unlock the code that will allow him to reanimate the dead.

Charismatic, sexy and dangerous, Herbert’s obsessions eventually draw his young colleagues, friends and lovers into his dark world. They will all share in the rewards and consequences of meddling with things that man was not meant to—all the while dealing with their own growing relationships and unfolding subsequent storylines inspired by the fantastic works of H.P Lovecraft.

Soon, the group of friends discovers that their campus is also becoming an increasing hot spot for scientific and sometimes horrific phenomenon. It’s as if the place is becoming a portal for the unknown.

Could it be that Herbert’s secret experiments are the cause of these occurrences…or is it something much more indescribable?

Episode by episode, Herbert West and his newfound schoolmates struggle to unlock the secret to life as well as the unknown oddities that they will discover along their journey.

Alliances will be formed and broken—forbidden relationships will develop and complicate.

Some will not survive and others will wish they hadn’t. HERBERT WEST—RE-ANIMATOR is a fresh, contemporary take on all of H.P. Lovecraft’s immortal horror works.

SHOCK N ROLL ISSUE 9: "GOOD NIGHT, SWEET COUNT" - TRIBUTE TO ROBERT QUARRY!

From Tim Sullivan, "This past weekend on February 21st, Robert Quarry left us. He was 83. He had been ill for some time, with the last year particularly hard with his move to the Actor’s Home. Through it all, the love displayed by his fans was a constant source of comfort to Bob. When the call went out to fandom that Count Yorga was moving into a new crypt and needed both basics and some simple frills, the response was overwhelming. Within a mere two weeks, Bob’s new room at the Actor’s Home was completely furnished with gifts sent by fans and friends from all over the world.

The music he loved, the movies that mattered to him, all replaced with brand new CD’s and DVD’s. Bob got a chance to read each and every one of the notes and emails that were sent to him, a true testament not just to the caring and kindness of those that make up the horror community, but a striking tribute to the man who inspired this outpouring, Bob Quarry himself. A true giant of the genre, one of the last great icons of fright to grace the crimson screen. I will always cherish my friendship with “Uncle” Bob. I am deeply grateful for the following interview that started it all with Bob in all his candid glory, the subsequent screening of both Yorga films that emerged as a result after dear Frank Darabont saw the interview and ordered 35mm prints to be shown at the American Cinematheque, an amazing event that put Bob back in the spotlight where he deserved to be. I thank all of Bob’s friends, fans and extended family for showing the love, especially Fred Olen Rey and Terrill Langford, who were right by his side to the very end.

Goodnight, Sweet Count. We will never forget you. Like Yorga, you live forever."

RE-ANIMATOR Remake... In 3D?!

Shock Till You Drop is reporting that producer Ray Haboush (along with Brian Yuzna) are developing a remake of 1985 Stuart Gordon helmed cult-classic RE-ANIMATOR. For years, the entire original gang behind the first RE-ANIMATOR, Stuart Gordon, writer Dennis Paoli, producer Brian Yuzna and actor Jeffrey Combs were attempting to launch a proposed new trilogy of RE-ANIMATOR starting with HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR. (Also long rumored to feature William H. Macy as the president!) Looks like instead, they're aiming to re-launch the tale of crazed science student Herbert West. And early word is in'll be in 3D!

Combs expressed in our interview with him last year that he had a difference of opinion with Gordon on how to continue the further exploits of Herbert West in HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR. (Read it HERE!)

Read more details on Shock's original news post HERE! Keep in mind, this is just the priliminary announcement. The remake is probably a few years away still.
