Stuart Gordon's STUCK Out In May! TRAILER!

Box Office Mojo has listed May 30th, 2008 as the (presumably limited?) theatrical release of Stuart Gordon's latest flick STUCK (coming to you courtesy of ThinkFilm). Gordon, of course horror fans know as the filmmaker behind genre faves RE-ANIMATOR, FROM BEYOND and most recently THE BLACK CAT. STUCK stars Stephen Rea and Mena Suvari and was co-written by Gordon and John Strysik, based on a real life incident. Just... check out the early poster and trailer below to get an idea of what you're in for. "Tom Is Having A Bad Day" is definitely my favorite tagline of the year thus far!

MY NAME IS BRUCE Pics!

Aint It Cool News got 2 exclusive high res pics from Bruce Campbell's latest flick MY NAME IS BRUCE. (Which Campbell directs and stars in.) Written by Mark Verheiden (one of the writers on the recently released EVIL DEAD comic book), MY NAME IS BRUCE is about a small town in South Oregon that summon Bruce Campbell to fight off demons, not realizing that he's just an actor and not the Deadite-slaying Ash character he plays in THE EVIL DEAD movies. Presumably, he shows up and hilarity ensues! Click the teaser pic below to see Bruce, the angel about to get some sugar, baby!

Original FRIDAY THE 13TH Cast Talk FRIDAY REMAKE!

FRIGHT friend and reader JD was at the recent Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors convention in Chicago, which hosted a FRIDAY THE 13th reunion panel. The original cast and crew mentioned a number of tid-bits about their involvement in the upcoming Platinum Dunes remake for FRIDAY THE 13TH which is being helmed by TEXAS CHAINSAW redux director Marcus Nispel and is due in theaters Friday, February 13th, 2009. Read on for the details!
From the panels, JD tells us:

Adrienne King (Alice from Part 1) told fans, at last weekend's Weekend of Horrors, that she was in touch with Sean Cunningham and had read a cast breakdown of the remake. It calls for "Playboy model and Maxim covergirl-types". She jokingly told the audience there, "Yeah, that sounds a lot like the original film."

Betsy Palmer added that they were courting her for a cameo in the remake and, although she didn't take them up on their offers for cameos in Jason X and FvJ, she said she is more likely to hear them out this time. She also says she has no clue how the makers of the film plan on having Pamela Voorhees and adult Jason existing at the same time.

Kane Hodder confirmed that he has not been approached to play Jason, and guesses it will be "another real big guy that Bruckheimer's people have hired in the past." It sounded like an allusion to Andrew Brynarski, (NO!) but since Kane isn't involved in the project, he couldn't confirm anything.

Harry Manfredini confirmed that he hasn't been approached to do the score, but said that he expects his iconic "ki ki ma ma" tune to be used in the remake.

Don't forget to read our FRIGHT exclusive interview with the lovely Mrs. Voorhees herself, BETSY PALMER!

MY BLOODY VALENTINE Will Be In... 3D!

Wow. LIONSGATE have revealed that their upcoming remake of 80's "slasher" cult-fave MY BLOODY VALENTINE will be released in 3D! A 3D MY BLOODY VALENTINE?! Between this, FINAL DESTINATION 4 and Alex Aja's PIRANHA all being released in 3D, looks like we'll have some interesting genre films visually in the next year. Patrick Lussier (DRACULA 2000) is still attached to direct from a script by Zane Smith. Also of note, LIONSGATE has wisely bumped the release date up from Friday February 13th to January 23rd, 2009. Friday February 13th is the release date for both the FRIDAY THE 13th remake and THE WOLF MAN!

JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 On Track! RAY WISE, JONATHAN BRECK Returning!

FANGORIA is reporting that at their recent Chicago Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors show, actor Ray Wise revealed that he's expecting to shoot JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 with writer/director Victor Salva (once again helming) this summer. The article also reports that at Fango's Austin show, the "Creeper" himself Jonathan Breck admitted to reprising his role. Salva himself confirmed quite a bit in the article with FANGO. “I have indeed signed to write and direct a third JEEPERS film this year. It’s tentatively titled JEEPERS CREEPERS 3: THE CREEPER WALKS AMONG US. It includes a prologue in the Old West and might bring back several characters from the first two films 20 years later. The script and story will be big on scares and give us plenty more of the traditional Creeper creepiness, with a few more bits thrown in about what it might be and where it came from.”
Plenty more tidbits and quotes about the project can be found at the original FANGORIA post:

Joe Lynch Might Be Crossing THE BRIDGE?

At the recent Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors show in Chicago, splatterpunk author Craig Spector was on hand to promote ANIMALS, the new film adaptation of his novel co-authored with John Skipp, when he revealed there may be more adaptations of their work on the way. One with an interesting director poised to helm. “It’s all very preliminary right now, but we’re talking about doing THE BRIDGE next, with Joe Lynch directing," Spector told FANGORIA. Lynch of course made quite a bloody splash last year with his debut WRONG TURN 2. THE BRIDGE is the 1991 novel by Spector & Skipp about killer toxic waste waging a war on mankind. More details below!

Original article: http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=6016

Here's an image of THE BRIDGE novel I was able to find off Amazon.

According to the article, Lynch only commented by confirming he's "in talks" to tackle THE BRIDGE. Hell, I'm down for anything he does, so count me excited.

Read our FRIGHT exclusive interview with JOE LYNCH below!

You can also see Lynch in the first episode of SHOCK TALK, along with ADAM GREEN, GEORGE ROMERO and GREG NICOTERO! Check it out HERE!

Cast, Updates For Ti West's HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

At the recent Chicago Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors show, actor AJ Bowen (from THE SIGNAL) talked a bit about his role in Ti West's upcoming flick HOUSE OF THE DEVIL. He revealed who will be playing his parents in the movie and genre fans should be pleased. From FANGO's report, "Tom Noonan (THE MONSTER SQUAD, MANHUNTER) will play my father in the film, and Mary Woronov (CHOPPING MALL, NIGHT OF THE COMET) is my mom”. Meanwhile, the fiends at Dread Central got some plot details out of Bowen in a recent Podcast. Read on for the details!
Bowen told DREAD, ”I remember when I was a kid I was told I couldn’t play Dungeons & Dragons because I’d become part of a Satanic cult. I couldn’t watch Unsolved Mysteries cause I’d join a Satanic cult,” Bowen told us. ”Ti [West] wrote a script that plays with the idea of what if that was legit? What if it was real?”

Anyone Want To See The Trailer For STARSHIP TROOPERS 3?

Ah! Well I remember rather enjoying the first STARSHIP TROOPERS. Didn't see the 2nd one. But now the 3rd's one's coming to DVD later this year, and Casper Van Dien (God Bless him) is back, reprising his role as Johnny Rico from the first. Hottie Jolene Blalock also stars. This installment was written and directed by Edward Neumeier, who scripted the first two STARSHIP movies and the original ROBOCOP. Take a peek at the trailer to STARSHIP TROOPERS 3: MARAUDER below!

"Shelter" Seeks Freaks (Funny, It's Usually The Other Way Around)

Strange and unusual? Live in Pittsburgh? Free Sunday? Nala Films is looking for "inbred" looking folks for Julianne Moore's foray into West Virginian hillbilly horror, "Shelter", which is scheduled to start shooting in the Pittsburgh area in March, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Pittsburgh based Donna Belajac Casting is looking for men and women, all races 18 years or older, to audition to be extras, but they're looking for people who can give the film that certain "Deliverance"/"Hills Have Eyes" vibe.

While the film is shooting in Pittsburgh, it will take place in West Virginia/Appalachia.

"The casting call scheduled for Sunday invites "men and women of all races, 18 or older," to try out as extras, according to the announcement from Downtown-based Donna Belajac Casting. But the extras wanted for the West Virginia scenes evoke images of "Deliverance" and "The Hills Have Eyes."

Belajac says, "Some of these 'holler' people -- because they are insular and clannish, and they don't leave their area -- there is literally inbreeding, and the people there often have a different kind of look. That's what we're trying to get. "Extraordinarily tall or short. Unusual body shapes, even physical abnormalities as long as there is normal mobility. Unusual facial features, especially eyes."

Kids, feeling left out? Don't worry, Belajac is also seeking, "a 9-12-year-old Caucasian girl with an other-worldly look to her. Could be an albino or something along those lines -- she's someone who is visually different and therefore has a closer contact to the gods and to magic. There is a granny who is a 'holler witch' who does magical things, She's blind because she's ancient, and this little girl is her eyes. She needs to look odd. She either needs unusually eerie eyes or pale skin. 'Regular-looking' children should not attend this open call."

Here that, Mom? Round up the irregular kids and get 'em in pictures! Sound like your big break? Head on over: The casting call takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn North Hills, 4859 McKnight Road, Ross, PA this Sunday.

First Look At ERIC RED's 100 FEET!

Arrow In The Head scored the first look at 100 FEET, the new film written and directed by Eric Red and starring Famke Jannsen (X-MEN, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL). Genre fans should recognize Eric Red as the writer of THE (original) HITCHER, NEAR DARK (one of my all time favorites) and BAD MOON. The clip is labeled as a "promo reel", but it pretty much plays like a full-on trailer and I dig what I'm seeing so far! Follow the link below to see it for yourself!

KATIEBIRD Director Returns With A GOTHIC TALE!

One of the more interesting indie flicks we've seen in the past few years was definitely writer/director Justin Paul Ritter's KATIEBIRD: CERTIFIABLE CRAZY PERSON. The filmmaker recently checked in with FANGORIA about 2 new projects he's working on, the first - A GOTHIC TALE featuring Rowdy Roddy Piper! (The 2nd one is titled LITTLE F**KER!?) You can find a few quick quotes about each new project, but get the whole scoop and first image at the original FANGO article HERE. Read on for more!

About his latest A GOTHIC TALE, Ritter tells FANGO, "It was originally inspired by three classic short stories: Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Tell-Tale Heart,’ Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment’ and Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Markheim.’ When I first wrote A GOTHIC TALE in 1998, it had three completely different ‘chapters,’ each based on one of those tales. But when we set about actually making the movie all these years later, I found myself drawn more and more to the idea of weaving the characters’ lives together into one much bigger story."

What about that other flick with the bitchin' title? "
I’m now producing LITTLE F**KER, a stoner-comedy/monster flick, and I was able to convince my friend Michael Muscal to direct."

Check out the first image of Piper, as well as more details on both projects at the original FANGO article:

DAVID FINCHER's Next Is BLACK HOLE!

Variety is reporting that David Fincher's next film will be BLACK HOLE, based on the graphic novel by Charles Burns. Originally HIGH TENSION, THE HILLS HAVE EYES director Alexandre Aja was attached to the Paramount/MTV film, but it looks like BLACK HOLE will be Fincher's follow-up to ZODIAC. (Personally my favorite Fincher movie.) The story to BLACK HOLE kicks off when a sexually transmitted "bug" is passed from teenager to teenager. Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman adapted the script from the original graphic novel. More details at the link below!

Ben Chapman, Played "Creature From The Black Lagoon" Has Passed Away

Sadly, Ben Chapman, who performed as The Creature From The Black Lagoon, has passed away at age 82. For someone who was best known for playing a cold-blooded creature, Mr. Chapman was one of the warmest and most generous persons the staff of this site had the opportunity to get to know, and anyone who had been fortunate to have met Ben at one of his many, many convention appearances would certainly agree. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chapman family, and his many friends and fans.

In 2005, Icons conducted an extensive interview with Ben, it's one of the interviews I'm most proud of on this site. Ben let us, at the time a little known horror site, spend nearly two hours on the phone with him talking about his life, his experience on "Creature", and the impact of the film over the years. Ben was a tireless advocate for the preserving the memory of The Gillman. I'll never forget my time on the phone with this horror legend, and I'll never forget how gracious he was with his fans:

"My favorite moments are with kids. I’m an education advocate. I’ve met kids at Chiller when they were 7 and they’re 17 now. I’ve watched them grow up because they come to see me every year. I asked them how do they know about this movie made 50 years ago. They’ll tell me they’re parents own a cassette. I’ll put my hand out to shake hands. I ask if they like school, get good grades. I say, "The only thing I want you to do is make me proud. Now point to a picture. I’ll autograph it.". I’ll slide it over and Mom and Dad will ask how much, and I’ll ask the kid when his birthday is, and I’ll say, "Today’s close enough."."

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE! TOXIC AVENGER: THE MUSICAL? AND THE REMAKE?!

In an interview with Icons Of Fright for the web-series AMERICA'S BAD KIDS, Troma president Lloyd Kaufman revealed quite a bit about the future of everyone's favorite superhero from New Jersey, THE TOXIC AVENGER! Could Toxie be returning in a musical? How 'bout a remake? Whoa, whoa. Hold your fits of rage and read exactly what Lloyd had to say about both!
While conducting the interview for the ICONS webseries AMERICA'S BAD KIDS, host John Torrani couldn't help but notice several 8 x 10 photographs on Lloyd's desk marked "TOXIC AVENGER: THE MUSICAL". We of course... had to ask.

"Yes!
Some excellent theatrical producers, the folks that brought you DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, and I believe the Harriet Tubman story, the musical of course, they are going to be producing TOXIC AVENGER: THE MUSICAL."

Lloyd added, "If that wasn’t enough, they have engaged David Bryan who is a member of Bon Jovi". (Ironically enough a New Jersey band!) "He’s written the music for it and it’s great. It’s terrific. They’ve got a big time director attached. Apparently, they’re going to start trying it out of town in Newark, New Jersey, which is one of the original Tromavilles. We filmed there back in the good old days. The original TOXIC AVENGER was filmed in and around Newark, New Jersey. So, it’s all coming around in a big, beautiful triangle."

This isn't the first time Toxie has been the subject of a musical stage production according to Kaufman, "There have been TOXIC AVENGER: THE MUSICAL’s in Omaha and in Portland, but by fans, but this is the real TOXIC AVENGER: THE MUSICAL with a real professional producing team, and hopefully something will happen with it. I’ve been to a table reading of it and David Bryan’s music is really terrific. The songs are witty, and the script is very faithful to Toxie but yet allows for the singing and dancing."

With the remake craze going on lately, we had to ask if Troma ever planned on remaking any of their classics. Kaufman's response shocked us!

"Right now, we’re getting a lot of calls from people like Brett Ratner and others who want to remake Troma movies!" But he's quick to point out, "But I would bet against any remakes of ANY Troma classics."

He explains a bit more his beef with Hollywood and why he'd never give a Troma character to the mainstream. "The thing about the mainstream is they sort of mark their territory. The idea that they can really beat you up, and take what little you have for nothing. It makes them feel good. If they can have an appointment with you, and tell you to meet them in the restaurant of their choice and then don’t show up and you’re sitting there in the fancy restaurant (alone), that’s like lifting their leg and marking their territory."

"We do get calls from these agents constantly about (remaking THE TOXIC AVENGER), but so far nobody has forked over any real money. And if we DID give TOXIC AVENGER to somebody, our fans would probably be pretty pissed off! So, it’d have to be a trade off. We’d have to get enough money so we could make a movie for our fans if we gave TOXIC AVENGER away."

Interestingly enough, he admitted the following, "On the other hand, I’d give it to James Gunn for free. I’d give it to Eli Roth for free, probably. They’re the sort of people we’d probably give it to, but not to Mister William Morris."

Obviously, both Gunn and Roth have had a history with Troma.

The episode of AMERICA'S BAD KIDS with Lloyd Kaufman will premiere with our upcoming March edition. Look for the full, unedited interview with Lloyd as part of our April 2008 edition.

Park Chan-Wook's THIRST Finds A Leading Vampire!

We're huge fans of filmmaker Park Chan-Wook who directed the "Vengeance" trilogy SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE, OLDBOY and LADY VENGEANCE. He's been planning a vampire flick for a while, and word has it the official title is THIRST! Kim Ok-bin (ARANG, DASEPO NAUGHTY GIRLS) has been cast, along side THE HOST's Song Kang-ho according to KTCcinema.com. The film is scheduled for a 9 month shoot (!), so we probably won't get to see it until sometime 2009! More details, including the plot below!
Dread Central reports, "Thirst tells of a well-respected priest (The Host’s Song Kang-ho) who becomes a vampire after a failed medical experiment. He begins down a path of depravity with a new taste for flesh and blood involving the wife of his best friend, who will be played by Kim."

Dread's article can be found HERE.

JOHN LANDIS Goes To The CRYPT? Directing GHOULISHLY YOURS, Gaines Biopic!

This is cool! Variety is reporting that fan-fave filmmaker John Landis will direct "GHOULISHLY YOURS, WILLIAM M. GAINES," a biopic based on the life of the publisher of EC Comics and Mad magazine! EC Comics was of course the publisher that brought us TALES FROM THE CRYPT! The article also states that Landis will develop the project with Joel Eisenberg, who's also penning the screenplay. More details below!
The Variety article reports, "Pic's centered on an anti-establishment group of artists and writers, led by a reluctant Gaines and cohort Al Feldstein, as they produce their comicbooks. At the peak of his success, Gaines became a First Amendment figurehead due to his unapologetic testimony before a Senate subcommittee investigating juvenile delinquency."

Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy Set For PEACOCK!

It seems actress Ellen Page (HARD CANDY, JUNO) is in demand lately! A few days ago, we reported she'd be appearing in Sam Raimi's genre picture DRAG ME TO HELL. Now, Variety is reported that Page and Cillian Murphy (28 DAYS LATER, BATMAN BEGINS, RED EYE) are set to appear together in PEACOCK, a psychological thriller. Shooting starts in May of this year. Michael Lander will direct from a script he co-wrote with Ryan Roy. More details, including quotes on the project below!
The article states, "The title PEACOCK is derived from tiny Peacock, Neb., where Murphy's character, a split personality, fools the town into believing his two alter egos are man and wife. Page plays a struggling young mother who holds the key to his past and sparks a battle between the personalities."

" 'Peacock' stunned me as a script from start to finish," Murphy said. "It offers an incredible challenge to an actor -- one I couldn't turn down."

AJ BOWEN Joins Cast Of TI WEST's Latest - THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL!

Several weeks back, it was revealed that filmmaker TI WEST (THE ROOST, TRIGGERMAN, CABIN FEVER 2) was about to begin production on his latest feature THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL for Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix and Dark Sky Films. We've just got the first bit of casting news and it's pretty darned cool! AJ BOWEN, (who steals THE SIGNAL) dropped us a line to let us know he's officially been cast in the role of Grady in THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL! He'll play a role that according to him "makes Lewis Denton (Bowen's SIGNAL character) look like a humanitarian." Congrats AJ! We're definitely looking forward to this one!

Check out our FRIGHT exclusive interview with AJ BOWEN! THE SIGNAL is in theaters NEXT Friday, February 22nd, 2008!!!

Original press release from Dark Sky Films: Dark Sky Films has partnered with A History of Violence producers Roger Kass and Josh Braun and horror impresario Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix to produce the original horror-thriller The House of the Devil, written and set to be directed by Ti West. Braun, Kass and Fessenden are producing along with Peter Phok as it was announced today by the MPI Media Group, Dark Sky’s parent company.

The film is in pre-production now in Connecticut, with casting commencing immediately and production anticipated to start in mid March. The House of the Devil was brought to MPI Media Group’s Malik Ali and Greg Newman via Marie-Therese Guirgis.

The House of the Devil tells the tale of a job gone horribly awry when a college girl answers a babysitting ad and gets much more than she expected. The House of the Devil is Ti West’s fourth feature film; his resume boasts the writing and direction of the critically acclaimed films The Roost, Trigger Man, and most recently, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever.

Larry Fessenden of Glass Eye Pix stated, “I am excited to be working with Ti again, and with this team and a few more resources. Ti’s ability to root his genre films in the rhythms and details of everyday life is what makes them resonant and startling. This one will be a doozy.”

Kass, who is producing through his Studio Bang banner, added, “I’ve wanted to produce a Ti West movie from the moment I saw the bats go rabid in The Roost, and teaming up again with Glass Eye and its aces crew on this one is a great follow-up to the energy we generated together on our last effort, Ilya Chaiken’s Liberty Kid.” Braun added, “This film is a horror classic in the making and we are excited to be working with MPI Media on this and hopefully future projects.”

In addition to steering A History of Violence to the big screen, Kass and Braun set up the graphic novel feature film adaptation of Button Man by John Wagner which is currently in development at DreamWorks.

Glass Eye Pix has been responsible for a slew of genre films, indie dramas and documentaries from such filmmakers as Kelly Reichardt, JT Petty, Ilya Chaiken and Ti West, as well as Fessenden himself (Habit, Wendigo, The Last Winter).

Breck Eisner Directing THE CRAZIES!

For a while there, Brad Anderson (SESSION 9, THE MACHINIST) was set to direct a remake of George Romero's THE CRAZIES. Then the project fell dormant. According to a Variety article today though, Breck Eisner (SAHARA) is set to direct the new CRAZIES from a script by Ray Wright for Rogue pictures. Michael Aguilar and Dean Georgaris are producing and Romero will exec produce.
THE CRAZIES is a remake of George Romero's 1972 film about a small Pennsylvania burg terrorized after a plane crash drops a biological weapon into the water.

Let's hope for the best!

WES CRAVEN Returns To Horror With 25/8!

Well, the man's early work is being remade at this point (LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), so it's only fitting that he make a return to the genre now before they run out of stuff of his to remake! Variety reports that Wes Craven will write and direct 25/8, a thriller that marks his first original horror script since 1994's Wes Craven's NEW NIGHTMARE. (Guess we're not counting HILLS HAVE EYES 2!) According to the article, Craven said the film unveils a signature villain, a serial killer who turns up 15 years after his purported death, to kill the seven children born on that fateful night. More info below!
Also from the article, Craven says, "It's more a thriller than slasher film, and revolves around a young kid with a very dark past involving his family and his father."

Rogue starts production in April on "25/8," which will be produced by Iya Labunka.

More details at THIS link.

We'll keep you posted on 25/8 as we hear more!

Roy Scheider, Star of Jaws, Has Died at 75

Roy Scheider, 2 time Oscar nominated actor, star of 1975's blockbuster "Jaws" has died at age 75. The AP reports:

"Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release a cause of death.

However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years."

Rest in Peace, Roy.

roy.jpg

You can read about Roy, and the making of "Jaws", in our December interview with the guys who recently completed "The Shark Is Still Working", a documentary on the making of "Jaws"

From his IMDB Bio:

"Lean, angular-faced and authoritatively spoken lead / supporting actor Roy Scheider obviously never heard the old actor's axiom about "never appearing with kids or animals" lest they overshadow your performance. Breaking that rule did him no harm, though, as he achieved pop cult status by finding, fighting and blowing up a 25-foot-long Great White shark (nicknamed "Bruce") in the mega-hit Jaws (1975) and then electrocuting an even bigger Great White in the vastly inferior Jaws 2 (1978).

Athletic Scheider was born in November 1932 in Orange, New Jersey, and was a keen sportsman from a young age, competing in baseball and boxing (his awkwardly mended broken nose is a result of his foray into Golden Gloves competitions). While at college, his pursuits turned from sports to theater and he studied drama at Rutgers and Franklin and Marshall. After a stint in the military, Scheider appeared with the New York Shakespeare Festival and won an "Obie Award" for his appearance in the play "Stephen D."

His film career commenced with the campy Z-grade horror cheesefest The Curse of the Living Corpse (1964), and he then showed up in Star! (1968), Paper Lion (1968), Stiletto (1969) and Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970). In 1971 he really came to the attention of film audiences with his role in the Jane Fonda thriller Klute (1971) and then as Det. Buddy Russo (scoring his first Oscar nomination) alongside fiery Gene Hackman in the crime drama The French Connection (1971). His performance as a tough street cop in that film led him into another tough cop role as NYC Det. Buddy Manucci in the underappreciated The Seven-Ups (1973), which features one of the best car chase sequences ever put on film.

In the early 1970s the Peter Benchley novel "Jaws" was a phenomenal best-seller, and young director Steven Spielberg was chosen by Universal Pictures to direct the film adaptation, Jaws (1975), in which Scheider played police chief Brody and shared lead billing with Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss in the tale of a New England seaside community terrorized by a hungry Great White shark. "Jaws" was a blockbuster, and for many years held the record as the highest-grossing film of all time. Scheider then turned up as the shady CIA agent brother of Dustin Hoffman in the unnerving Marathon Man (1976) and in the misfired William Friedkin-directed remake of Salaire de la peur, Le (1953) titled Sorcerer (1977), before again returning to Amity to battle another giant shark in Jaws 2 (1978). Seeking a change from tough cops and hungry sharks, he took the role of womanizing, drug-popping choreographer Joe Gideon, the lead character of the semi-autobiographical portrayal of director Bob Fosse in the sparkling All That Jazz (1979). It was another big hit for Scheider (and another Oscar nomination), with the film featuring a stunning opening sequence to the tune of the funky George Benson number "On Broadway", and breathtaking dance routines including the "Airotica" performance by the glamorous Sandahl Bergman.

Returning to another law enforcement role, Scheider played a rebellious helicopter pilot in the John Badham conspiracy / action film Blue Thunder (1983), a scientist in the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) simply titled 2010 (1984), a cheating husband who turns the tables on his blackmailers in 52 Pick-Up (1986), a cold-blooded hit man in Cohen and Tate (1989) and a CIA operative in the muddled and slow-moving The Russia House (1990). The versatile Scheider was then cast as the captain of a futuristic submarine in the relatively popular TV series "SeaQuest DSV" (1993), which ran for three seasons."

30 DAYS Director DAVID SLADE Helms UNTHINKABLE!

Filmmaker David Slade (30 DAYS OF NIGHT, HARD CANDY) has signed on to direct topical thriller UNTHINKABLE for Michael Mendelsohn and Caldecott Chubb, taking over for previously attached director Tarsem Singh (THE CELL) according to a report from Variety. The story involves "investigators who push the limits of interrogation as they seek a suspect's knowledge of an impending nuclear attack on the United States." I enjoyed HARD CANDY and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT quite a bit, so I'll be looking forward to anything Slade's involved in.

"Gary Oldman (DRACULA), Odette Yustman (CLOVERFIELD) and Cam Gigandet are in negotiations to star in David Goyer's untitled supernatural thriller (originally titled BORN) that Platinum Dunes is producing for Rogue Pictures", says the Hollywood Reporter. Goyer directed last year's THE INVISIBLE and was the writer of the BLADE trilogy, as well as BATMAN BEGINS. The article continues, "The script, which Goyer wrote, follows a 19-year-old girl who is haunted by a dybbuk, the soul of a dead person barred from heaven, in the form of a young boy who perished in Auschwitz." Romero's DIAMOND DEAD Back On Track; DIARY 2 Talk!

In an article with Cinematical.com, George Romero confirmed that his passion project; a horror/comedy titled DIAMOND DEAD is back on track as funding has officially fallen into place. The film is about "a rock band called DIAMOND DEAD whose members are all zombies and whose hot babe manager tries to use her media wiles to take them to the top despite their rather unappealing habits, like eating brains". Read on for more info on the project, and also some interesting words about DIARY OF THE DEAD 2 from last week's New York Q & A.
Original article:

http://www.cinematical.com/2008/02/08/exclusive-george-romero-prepping-diamond-dead-next

On DIAMOND DEAD's story: "The film is a horror-comedy about a rock band called Diamond Dead whose members are all zombies and whose hot babe manager tries to use her media wiles to take them to the top despite their rather unappealing habits, like eating brains and stuff. It takes swipes at the media, Christian fundamentalists who hate the band, and various other Romero-style targets."

Ah, so the usual in-your-face commentary is present.

The article also states that George would love to do a DIARY OF THE DEAD 2, "I wish I could have gone further with it. If there is a possibility of a sequel, I'd actually love to do it, cause there's a hell of a lot more. I'd love to go further with that theme."

If you've read our FIRST LOOK review of DIARY OF THE DEAD, then you'll know in our humble opinions, George went a little too far with that theme.

However, at the Q & A that followed that DIARY screening here in NY, George confessed he doesn't have a concrete idea for DIARY 2 yet. Paraphrasing here, but he said something like... "There was an idea I was playing around with but that ended up on the internet, so I probably won't do that (version)."

COREY HAIM BACK FOR LOST BOYS 2 AFTER ALL!

Several months back, production was completed for LOST BOYS 2: THE TRIBE, written by Hans Rodionoff, directed by P.J. Pesce and starring Tad Hilgenbrink, Autumn Reeser, Angus Sutherland with Corey Feldman & Jamison New Lander returning as the infamous "Frog Brothers". At the last minute, Corey Haim (who's Sam Emerson character was initially in the script) had to pull out of the project. According to an exclusive report on SHOCK, Warner's is happy with an early cut of the film, and is allowing additional footage to be shot for the sequel, WITH Corey Haim returning to the role of Sam (and reuniting him with Corey Feldman!) It's good to have both Corey's back in the flick! And God bless ya Ryan Rotten for always breakin' the cool scoops like this one!
THE LOST BOYS 2: THE TRIBE is scheduled for a direct-to-DVD release in July of 2008. We'll keep you posted on if that changes!

Hitchcock Recreated By Fashion Magazine? Uh...Better Them Than Michael Bay...

Because we're such big fans of fashion magazines here at Icons of Fright we thought we'd pass this tidbit along. Vanity Fair magazine will feature a photo spread of big-name stars recreating 11 famous stills from Alfred Hitchcock's films. Hey, no matter what you think of fashion rags, this does sound pretty neat. This photos and stars will include...

-Seth Rogan recreating the crop dusting from "North by Northwest"
-Jodie Foster recreating Tippi Hedren in the phone booth in "The Birds"
-Renee Zellweger as Kim Novak in bell tower from "Vertigo"

Also included, but whose recreations haven't been revealed yet, are Casey Affleck, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Robert Downey Jr., Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, James McAvoy, Omar Metwally, Gwyneth Paltrow, Eva Marie Saint, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, and Tang Wei.

One of the photographers who shot two of the recreations, Art Streiber, explains, "“What makes these scenes so impressive is that they don’t last long in the movies, but they have become classic. They hold up 50, 60 years later, as stills, without dialogue. You know immediately what it is."

Vanity Fair has posted a behind-the-scenes video documenting the making of this photo spread here.. And you can get a look at Seth Rogan in the "North by Northwest" recreation here.

Let's Remake Everything! (Even Obscure Titles From The 1940's)

Jimmy the newspaper boy rushed over here to the Icons of Fright News Department late this morning. Rushing past my Gal Friday, he hollered loudly, "Mr. C, Mr. C! Big news!"

"Yes, yes, sure, sure, Jimmy, sure, sure. Now slow down there kiddo, there's a lady present."

"RKO is remaking "I Walked WIth A Zombie!" he blurted out, moon pie crumbs flying out of his mouth and across the room.

"What? Say listen, and stop the presses! That's big news, kid, big news! Good job, Jimmy, here's a nickel and pack of Lucky Strikes, now get out there kid find me some more stories! You'll be real news man someday, Jimmy, a real news man!"

Thanks to a deal, partly involving Twisted Picture, old-school (and I do mean old) studio RKO has formed Roseblood Pictures, with the intention on remaking 8 classic films from Val Lewton library. This includes titles such as "The Seventh Victim", "The Monkey's Paw" (Oh boy...), "Bedlam", "Body Snatcher", and "I Walked With A Zombie" (which is not about a leisurely stroll with a burgeoning horror director).

Why the sudden interest in dusting off these titles? RKO head Ted Hartley sums it's up, "The most successful ROI in the movie business comes from scary movies that get wide release and cost under $10 million."

Cheap and fast.

Robert Englund Says He WON'T Be Back As FREDDY KRUEGER!

A few days back, it was officially announced that Platinum Dunes planned on remaking/ rebooting/ re-whatevering the classic NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series. The biggest concern on the minds of fans was... would Robert Englund be back as Freddy Krueger? Rumors have been swirling around the internet that he's in, that he's out. But today, when talking to Italian web publication BadTaste.it, Englund himself ruled out the possibility of him reprising the role by saying he's "too old for this new version". Sad news for all us die hards, but what are ya gonna do? One way or another, the new movie is coming! Englund is currently hard at work on his next directorial film THE VIJ. Read on for more quotes & the link to the original article!

http://www.badtaste.it/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2933&Itemid=30

Regarding hearing the news of the NIGHTMARE remake, Englund said, "I think it's due to the great success of the Rob Zombie version of Halloween and I also liked a lot the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, even if I think the original by Tobe Hooper is perfect. Likewise, I consider the original version of Nightmare on Elm Street a classic of this genre, but I think there is always room for new interpretations by using the new tecnology. In the past, they were talking about a prequel. Anyway, I'm too old for this new version, otherwise it would be Freddie vs. Viagra..."

Asked weather he'd consider cameoing in the new Freddy flick? "It would be a lot of fun. I'm a great fan of Michael Bay, I took my nephew to see Transformers on the opening day and I think it was terrific. So, yes, I would be delighted to."

Robert also elaborated on his new film THE VIJ. "It's inspired by a short story by russian writer Gogol. We've taken many characters from there, but we departed from the original story. We've taking themes from the original, but the humour and the philosophy has been removed. In the original story, there is an argument among students in a village. They mention our plot, so we've taken that mention of the plot and made our movie out of it. A priest goes the village to save the rich man's daughter, who's cursed by the fallen angel, The Vij, the guardian of the purgatory, who came to Earth. So, we elaborated that and made it our basic plot story."

As George's birthday this week also coincides with the first NYC screening of "Diary of the Dead" this Wednesday Icons of Fright celebrates with a look back at some of our Romero-related interviews, articles and reviews from the past 4 years. Take a look!

Back in 2005 we tracked down the original Barbara herself, Judith O'Dea, and conducted one of the first interviews about Night of the Living Dead that'd she'd done in some time. Check it out:

Just a month later, we ran into 1990's Barbara when we interviewed Patricia Tallman, who starred in Tom Savini's NOTLD remake:

And what would a Romero film be without stunning special effects makeup? In Summer of 2006 we had the chance to sit down with KNB founder Greg Nicotero, who got his start working with Romero on "Day of the Dead", and would later work on "Land of the Dead", "Monkey Shines", "Diary of the Dead".

Also, be sure to check out Icons staffer Jysn's '05 article "Romero: More Than Just Zombies", which takes a look back at Romero's work outside of the zombie genre. "Martin", "Creepshow", "Two Evil Eyes", anyone? All classics.

And finally, if you weren't already a fan, read some of our past DVD reviews to find out why you should be:

THE WOLFMAN Now Being Helmed By Joe Johnston!

Last week, it was reported that director Mark Romanek had left the upcoming WOLFMAN remake from Universal Pictures. (Set to star Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt with the legendary Rick Baker on FX duty.) Dozens of names have been mentioned as replacements from Frank Darabont to John Landis, Neil Marshall and Guillermo Del Toro. We didn't want to report anything until something was official. Both Variety and Ain't It Cool News are confirming that Joe Johnston (OCTOBER SKY, JURASSIC PARK III, THE ROCKETEER) is the new director of THE WOLF MAN. Production is set to begin next month in the UK with a release for next year. Andrew Kevin Walker (SE7EN) wrote the script.

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - DICK DUROCK "SWAMP THING"!

Just added! A FRIGHT exclusive interview with the SWAMP THING himself DICK DUROCK! From the 70's and 80's, if you turned on the TV you just might have caught actor Dick Durock on one of his many small roles on TV and not recognized him. That's because the role he's best remembered for had him wearing 80 pounds of green latex. Dick played everyone's favorite leafy green superhero Swamp Thing not just in 2 feature films, but for 3 seasons on USA Network's early 90's series. Dick sat down with us so we could dredge up some old memories from the swamps!

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - ACTOR AJ BOWEN!

Just added! A FRIGHT exclusive interview with actor AJ BOWEN! This winter you're going to be introduced to a whole staple of new talent when “THE SIGNAL” releases. Once again we sat down with one of the lead actors from this amazing new film. Actor AJ Bowen plays Louis, another victim of the strange transmission that is wreaking havoc in the city of Terminus. It's no surprise with a film as strong as “THE SIGNAL” is that some huge genre fans were behind the making of it, and AJ is no exception. Here we got to geek out over USA Up All Night, “Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama”, and talk serious about what an incredible collaborative effort “THE SIGNAL” was.
