"Lamberto Bava’s ghost saga begins with very much in-love couple Stacey (Laura Harring, of MULHOLLAND DRIVE) and Mark (John Hannah) living a dream life in the South African veldt. Then Mark suffers fatal car crash injuries in the remote countryside. Soon after, he appears to Stacey in a dream. Or was it real? The couple make love, and Stacey gradually begins to lose her grip on reality. After examining her, doctor Pete Postlethwaite is astonished to find her pregnant. Everyone assumes the child was conceived before Mark’s death, but we know otherwise. When the baby is delivered, nightmarish events mushroom for Stacey, and she realizes that Mark’s clinging ghost – nourished by the rich, local culture of ancient African spirit lore - wants to pull her out of this world and into the next through their son."

Torture Porn...IN SPACE!

Fellow Icons of Fright/WickedFX guru Jsyn reminded me I really do miss the "______IN SPACE" horror movies. You know, where every horror franchise goes once it's worn out it's welcome and there' just no where left for it to go. "Hellraiser" went there. "Jason" visited the black abyss of space. Even the Leprechaun and The Critters blasted off into cold outer reaches of the solar system.

So what about the so-called "torture porn" genre. Box-office flops, a public generally tired of the same-old thing film after film. It's not looking good for this little subgenre. So...what do we have to look forward to?

Here's a few ideas I have to keep the genre going.

Space Turistas: A Russian mafia-like group sells tickets to the International Space Station. Steals organs in zero-gravity torture surgery:

The Right Saw: 6 former NASA test pilots wake up, trapped, in a former Air Force base.

Captivity Capsule: Due to a communication error Elisha Cuthbert is launched into space in grimy, out-moded NASA technology circa 1965. Never comes back.

And of course, this one needs no description:

(All the torture in space "posters" done by me. Please credit me if you share with friends)

The Death of Ingmar Bergman: Yes, Even Horror Fans Can Say "Goodbye"

How can horror fans relate to today's news of the death of cinematic giant Ingmar Bergman. I say, "How could horror fans not relate?" Here's a look at some of three highly influential films by the late director that have, and continue to, powerfully influence our favorite genre.

The 7th Seal

The Seventh Seal: In plague ridden Europe a knight awakens on a beach, and encounters the figure of Death. A deal is struck, and an intricate game of chess is played, both figuratively and literally. Bergman gives us a classic, enduring image of Death personified. If you've ever wonder why Death is often portrayed with a Swedish accent in comedies now you know. Also, playing the knight is Max Von Sydow. One of Bergman's great gifts to the film world was introducing the world to this legendary actor. You mostly likely remember him best as Father Merrin in "The Exorcist". This film is so full of beautiful dark imagery throughout, and it's enhanced by the way this film is photographed. The look of "The Seventh Seal", and many of Bergman's other films very well may have influenced the look of many of the great black and white horror films of the 60's. Look at Freddie Francis's "The Innocents", Wise's "The Haunting", Polanski's "Repulsion" and you can clearly see the influence of this film.

Hour of the WolfHour of the Wolf: This is what most film historians would refer to as Bergman's only "real" horror film. Artist Von Sydow and his pregnant wife retreat to an creepy and very windy island, to help him focus on his artwork. On the other end of the island is a castle inhabited by a Baron and his very strange associates. The "Hour of the Wolf" of the title is the hour halfway between midnight and dawn, during which Von Sydow is often haunted by horrifying nightmares, which he tries to stay awake to avoid. Still, even while awake he is subject to strange visions and an increasing paranoia. His wife becomes frightened of him as he apparently slips deep into a surreal madness.

Virgin SpringThe Virgin Spring: Yep, Von Sydow again. I suppose, a way, you could consider Max Von Sydow something of a muse for Bergman. This might sound familiar, although it does take place in the middle ages. Von Sydow's daughters are sent to bring candles to their church. Along the way, the younger daughter, Karin, encounters three shepards who rape and murder her. Later that night the three herdsman find themselves, without realizing it, taking shelter in Von Sydow's house. Von Sydow becomes aware of what the men have done and takes revenge. Last House on the LeftYes, "The Virgin Spring" was the film upon which Wes Craven would base his much, much more violent directorial debut "Last House on the Left" on. Try keeping Bergman in mind today, and if you have a chance, maybe check out some of the films above. If you like them you might want to try some of his more dramatic films like "Cries and Whispers", "Wild Strawberries", or The next time some film snob comes at you and thumbs his nose at the horror genre and it's conventions, remind them even masters like Bergman found that they needed to express darkness and recognize there is evil and terror in the world.

Rest in peace, Ingmar Bergman.

SAW IV poster unveiled!

A couple of days back, Bloody-Disgusting unveiled a disturbing SAW 4 poster, which is now believed to be the foreign poster. Below is the official US poster for the upcoming sequel. There's multiple reports on line that the film has been slapped with an NC-17 on it's first submit to the MPAA (Which will be release in theaters October 2007). There are also plenty of reports from the Comic-Con presentation on ShockTillYouDrop and Bloody-Disgusting. Since we're East Coast, all we got is the poster!

THE JOKER STRIKES! THE DARK KNIGHT trailer hits! Viral websites launched!

Now, this obviously isn't horror... BUT we're big comic book fans, especially of the character of BATMAN and Christopher Nolan's film BATMAN BEGINS. Next summer Nolan continues the new BATMAN franchise with THE DARK KNIGHT. A few days ago, numerous sites started popping up on line leaving clues on how to join the JOKER's army. It all started at WhySoSerious.com. It led to an on-the-street event outside of San Diego's Comic-Con, followed by the release of a JOKER image and the first teaser trailer for THE DARK KNIGHT. Now... it's clear that THIS JOKER is absolutely insane. Check out the teaser trailer below, along with some links and the new image!

David Fincher's ZODIAC on DVD today! It's a MUST-RENT, but wait for the Director's Cut to BUY!

David Fincher's ZODIAC hit's DVD shelves today, and while I absolutely LOVED the movie, I'm actually not going to buy it! Why? Because this bare-bones edition is going to be replaced with an extensive director's cut sometime next year. Now, again, the movie is fantastic, so definitely rent it. Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr totally steal every scene they're in, and Jake Gyllenhaal does a great job carrying the rest of the film. I also think this is among one of Fincher's best as a filmmaker. Read on for the details on the inevitable Director's Cut courtesy of DAVISDVD.com.

While a bare-bones edition of ZODIAC is officially released on DVD on July 24th, DavisDVD.com is reporting a 2 Disc Director's Cut for next year.

All the info below is from DavidDVD.com. The direct link is below:

http://www.davisdvd.com/news/dvd.html

- Audio Commentary by David Fincher, actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr., screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer Brad Fischer and crime novelist James Ellroy

- Extensive behind-the-scenes featurettes detailing the production from start to finish

- In-depth looks at the actual Zodiac crimes, including all-new interviews with the original investigators and survivors

Extensive TOM HOLLAND interview on The213.Net!

Check out VAMP for free on You Tube!

As most of our FRIGHT fiends know from reading the site, we're firm believers in trying to help out independent filmmakers get the word out about their movies. A couple of years ago, I met a filmmaker named Mason LeCompte who wrote, directed, produced, edited and stared in this low-budget debut feature titled VAMP. The amount of work she put into this film is impressive, and reminds me of the early works of Abel Ferrara. She's recently broken down the film into several clips available to view via You Tube. You can check them out below along with the synopsis!

Vamp takes us into an urban underworld thick with drugs, sex and murder. There we meet the victims of a seductive vampire who preys on the lost. Vamp is an unconventional, cult, horror film. As twisted and disturbing as it is visually stimulating, the movie features mind-altering effects and intricately layered images. The movie is set to the entrancing, house and dance music of Hook the Captain.

What's A BlobFest?

Well, it is the 50th Anniversary of the "The Blob" and every year the town of Phoenixville, PA celebrates, and even shows the film at the very theater the blob ate up something good.

Check out a great blog from one of the convention attendees here at Cinemaslave

"The Blob" scared me very much when I was a kid, even the 50's version. You never really saw the blob devour people in that one, and the very idea of what it did to you set my little imagination running. The 80's remake gave me nightmares for weeks.

TOM HOLLAND answers your questions on MY SPACE! And reveals DRIVEN teaser trailer!

Wow! TOM HOLLAND, the writer of PSYCHO 2, THE BEAST WITHIN, CLASS OF 1984, writer/director of FRIGHT NIGHT, THINNER, THE LANGOLIERS and director of CHILD'S PLAY as well as episodes of TALES FROM THE CRYPT and MASTERS OF HORROR is now on MY SPACE! And he's just posted a blog post answering several fan questions, and also revealed the teaser trailer to his much anticipated web exclusive series DRIVEN! Follow the links!

When asked what his new web exclusive series DRIVEN was about, Tom gave this brief synopsis, "A down and out limo driver, Tom Pope, is hired to drive the daughter of a super rich Miami developer to an insane asylum in Jackson, Mississippi. The girl will be kept drugged and looked after by a nurse who will accompany them.

They are no more than half a day on the road when the girl, Holly, palms her pills and gets into a fight with the nurse. The girl throws the woman out of the car at eighty miles an hour, killing her.

Pope finds himself stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dead body and a crazy girl, only the girl tells him she is sane, that she is being set up to be killed, and he's slated to take the fall for it. Pope has to find out the truth and stay alive at the same time."

He also included a teaser trailer and answered several questions about his previous genre work, such as PSYCHO 2, CHILD'S PLAY and FRIGHT NIGHT.

FOR RICHARD FRANKLIN...

This is really, really sad news. I was just informed by a friend that Richard Franklin, the Director of PSYCHO 2 passed away yesterday. He would've been 59 this Sunday. Richard also directed PATRICK, as well as ROADGAMES, CLOAK & DAGGER (which was scripted by Tom Holland, who also wrote PSYCHO 2), LINK and (one of my personal favorites) FX 2. (Read more...)
I'd exchanged several emails with Richard (going back almost 3 years) when I first thought up the idea of putting together a documentary on the PSYCHO franchise. In fact, he's the one that introduced me to Tom, (via email) who has since become a good friend and great supporter.

Richard was based out of Australia so (for obvious reasons) it was rather difficult for me to meet up with him to talk about his experiences on PSYCHO 2. However, I'll forever be grateful to him for indirectly kickstarting this project by putting me in touch with the first person I'd interview from one of the sequels. I will always forever be grateful to Richard for PSYCHO 2, which to this day still holds up, and is a film I consider one of the best horror sequels ever produced.

Our condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

Rest in peace, Richard...

IGN reveals JAMES WAN's DEATH SENTENCE poster!

James Wan (SAW) mentioned last night on My Space that the folks over at IGN have the theatrical poster for his upcoming revenge thriller DEATH SENTENCE, which stars Kevin Bacon and opens (I think) August 31st. (Please no! Not against HALLOWEEN!) I'm personally a huge fan of the "revenge" genre and can't wait to see James Wan's take on it. And with Kevin Bacon as the guy unleashing some vengeance, I can NOT wait. Read on to see a tease of the poster and a link to the full poster...

TRIPPER DVD art Vs Theatrical Poster?

I enjoyed the hell out of David Arquette's directorial debut THE TRIPPER (see FIRST LOOK review HERE) when it made it's limited theatrical release back in April. Now, with October 30th set as the date that THE TRIPPER hits DVD, I'm really hoping this movie finds the cult audience it deserves. With all that said, most sites are reporting the DVD art and specs (aka features). I'm buying this sucker no matter what. Even if it was bare-bones and copied the cover of Metallica's "Black Album". But I was hoping for the bitchin' theatrical poster as the cover. Read on and compare...

The DVD's features include:

Audio commentary by director David Arquette, actors Thomas Jane, Paul Reubens and Richmond Arquette
- Deleted scenes
- Blooper reel
- Behind the Spleens featurette
- Presidential Campaign Tour footage
- Trailers

Here's the DVD cover:

The original theatrical poster:

Now which do you guys prefer?

Either way, please support David's movie and pick up the DVD on October 30th. Check out our FIRST LOOK review:

Is HATCHET 2 coming sooner then we think?!

On September 7th, 2007 Anchor Bay Entertainment will release Adam Green's much anticipated HATCHET into theaters. And Adam's mentioned in several interviews previously that he planted plenty of seeds in this first movie for potential sequels. Could HATCHET 2 be coming sooner then we all expected? Those fiends over at DREAD CENTRAL posted a bit of news that suggests the sequel might go before the cameras as early as February of next year! (2008) Read on...
From the original DREAD CENTRAL post:

http://www.dreadcentral.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2502

"Green made mention that the producers of Hatchet are ready for the sequel to roll as early as this February, but Green wasn't able to confirm his involvment yet as the talks are just becoming serious. Obviously nothing is set in stone until contracts are signed, but February is the month everyone’s looking towards for a start date.

You may recall that Green’s made mention before about Hatchet 2, stating he already has a story in mind and that it may involve more of Tony Todd’s character from the first film. Of course, that won’t mean much to you until you go out and see the film when it opens on September 7th, but trust me, it’s cool news."

HATCHET opens September 7th. Adam Green's follow-up SPIRAL will hopefully be out by early next year. (Look for an ICONS FIRST LOOK on SPIRAL soon enough)

GRINDHOUSE AFICIONADO ISSUE 5! SUMMER EDITION!

After months of silence, Kevin Klemm returns to the GRINDHOUSE AFICIONADO column with what we consider his best edition yet! The summer's not even half way over yet, so Kevin gives us 12, that's right 12 double feature recommendations!!! Grab some gin & tonic, and head over to your local video store with this list! Read on!!!
Kevin's opening message for Issue 5
:

"I know, I know. I’ve been a slacker lately about getting out the Grindhouse Aficionado columns. Between Girls and Corpses Magazine (we are now an honest to God print mag), and various other projects I’m working on, Grindhouse Aficionado had been pushed to the back burner. But no more! I am back from hiatus, and it’s time to give you some DVD suggestions to help you get through the dog days of summer.

West Coast, East Coast, and every where in between, it’s been a fucking hot summer already! Here in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley, it’s been over 100 degrees for 10 straight days. Normally we don’t see that kind of temps until August. Whether it’s global warming or what, I’m not stepping outside for nothing. I am going to be like a vampire and only go out at night when the sun goes down, and the Earth cools off some. I have Netflix, Deep Discount DVD, and Amazon to keep me supplied with movies. I can order liquor online from BevMo, and can get any kind of food I can think of, delivered right to my door. As long as my air conditioning and credit cards hold out, I’m set for the summer.

Like most people, I am not all about Grindhouse cinema, or all about horror etc... I love all kinds of films and that is going to be the slight deviation from my regular column. What I’ve done is compile a list of Grindhouse, horror, Film Noir, Hell, I even threw an Elvis movie into the mix for your enjoyment. The summer is a great time to revisit old favorites and discover some new ones. I’ve gone through my movie collection and divided the films up into double features. I hope you enjoy my picks.

So grab some popcorn and a Gin and Tonic, the first feature is about to begin."

1-18-08?! Quicktime/High-Def Trailers Now Online

If you were lucky enough to be in a theater showing this teaser trailer before "Transformers" move along, but there's plenty of us who've been waiting patiently for this teaser to hit online. Nobody knows quite what J.J. Abram's secret "1-18-08" movie is really about, but the trailer is striking and scary. Check it out on the Apple Trailers site. .

Code name for the film is "Cloverfield" and it's rumored, but not confirmed, that it's a giant monster movie taking place in NYC shot on home video cameras, making it a "Blair Witch" meets "Godzilla". I could go on for hours about what I hope this really is (oh good lord, J.J. give us Cthulu!!!).

Those who've already seen this enigmatic trailer should shoot over to the "official" site for the movie.

"POSTAL": Uwe Boll's Citizen Kane

This time the only "Thumbs Up" aren't just from the director! As the end credits of the film began to roll and the directors name appeared on screen the entire room came to their feet and began to applaud. Several audience members approached the director, who was sitting, very inconspicuously, in the back of the screening room, to shake his hand, to thank and congratulate him on the film. That director: Uwe Boll. The film: “Postal”. Adapted from a video game it barely resembles “Postal” is comedy that is indiscriminately offensive, boldly inappropriate, gross, and lewd. But, hey, it's also really funny too.

Boll and Bin LadenPlaying out something like a 90 minute live-action episode of “South Park”, the film takes place in the fictional town of Paradise. Zack Ward, as “Dude”, is out of work, living in a trailer and married to a morbidly obese woman that the entire town seems to get a ride on. His Uncle Dave (Dave Foley) is a new age cult leader running a commune on the outskirts of Paradise and who owes the IRS. They hatch a plot to steal the first shipments of a hot new toy, the “Krotchy” doll (a stuffed scrotum with the voice of Verne Troyer). They don't realize that they're also in direct competition with a group of al-Qaida terrorists, led by Osama Bin Laden himself, who have secretly sewn vials of avian flu into all the toys.

Zack Ward and the girls of "Postal"“Postal”, like “South Park”, is also a very sharp political satire wrapped up in great low-comedy. Boll takes aim at everything from religious fanaticism, to political corruption, and pseudo-intellectualism. Boll even makes a cameo as the owner of the Lil' Germany theme park and makes a little fun of himself. Of course, this is all played out with some remarkably funny and extreme slapstick violence. It'd be giving away too much, but I'll just tease you with this: During the scene in Lil' Germany about 200 kids holding stuffed Krotchy dolls are machine gunned down by terrorists and Uwe Boll pays Verne Troyer in Nazi gold before he is raped by a roomful of cross-dressing chimpanzees. The whole movie is so completely batshit crazy that even the creator of the video game “Postal” makes a cameo in which he screams, “Uwe Boll, what the fuck have you done to my game?”

Boll is also certainly courting controversy with a few scenes in this film (ok, maybe with the whole film). This is especially true the opening scene which takes place in the cockpit of a plane on 9/11. It's so politically incorrect and in such bad taste it might make even John Waters blush. Still,“Postal” is really like some of the very best violent satiric comedy that we're used to seeing come out places like Troma. Actually, come to think of it, “Troma” would be the best way to describe what “Postal” is. It's a $15 million dollar Troma film.

Zach Ward

It makes me wonder, and hope, that perhaps the last few years we haven't been seeing the real Uwe Boll. Maybe the guy has been somewhat out of his element as a writer-director, and should have been making comedies like this the whole time. You can't be an incompetent director and make a movie work as well as a comedy as this does. You have to know what you're doing and it's clear Boll does. He has the talent for this kind of material. You have to know how to play an audience, you have to have to know how to make the energy of the film flow and work right. A film that's as over-the-edge as this is, that's full of slapstick and sight gags, and that wants to be shocking and funny can wear out and exhaust an audience very quickly. In an incompetent directors hand, a movie like “Postal” would fall flat, it would be boring and stale 20 minutes in. But you don't find yourself looking at your watch during “Postal” because it is so sharply paced and written and so well handled by Boll and his great cast. Good work, Mr. Boll!

And now...Mr. Boll and Krotchy:

Boll and Krotchy on set of "Postal"
