Haunting Dread & Black Phillip Await in A24’s THE WITCH Trailer!

THE WITCH has been on our radar since its’ acclaimed debut at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, even more so with writer-director Robert Egger’s taking home the Best Director prize. No easy feat that’s made even more impressive by THE WITCH being Egger’s feature directorial debut. It landed him the gig of remaking the immortal NOSFERATU, so it’s safe to say we have a new horror director to champion.

A24 (arguably one of the best independent genre distributors around) pushed the release date from 2015 to “coming soon 2016“, but that’s ok because this trailer premiere will have you hitting replay over and over again. It lays on the atmosphere thick as the forests these characters seem to fear. There’s an immediate sense of dread and confusion about just what is going on, and who awaits in the woods. A lot of the buzz has been centered around Black Phillip, the eerie goat glimpsed in the trailer and adorns the official poster above. I’ve a feeling satanic terror is in store.

Watch the trailer below, and pray 2016 comes quick for THE WITCH.

New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. In his debut feature, writer/director Robert Eggers painstakingly designs an authentic re-creation of New England — generations before the 1692 trials in Salem — evoking the alluring and terrifying power of the timeless witch myth. Told through the eyes of Thomasin, the teenage daughter (in a star-making performance by Anya Taylor-Joy), and supported by haunting camera work and an ominous score, The Witch is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil.
