FRIGHT AT HOME: August 18th – Killer kids, Nomads, Alien Abductions and a whole lot of craziness!

68390_10151150539704998_897037894_nThis week, for our FRIGHT AT HOME column, we thought we’d try out something new. While we typically share the week’s newly released titles and give you a small rundown on what films are ones that you might want to check out, we thought it would be fun to switch it up a bit. We’re going to give you the DVD/Bluray art and the official synopsis for each film, but instead of writing small pieces on each film, this week we’re going to be featuring a video review of each film, so we can tell you in more detail about each film. It’s a test, so if you fright fanatics would rather have our usual format, sound off and let us know, and if you dig the new approach to FRIGHT AT HOME, let us know that as well, because like it’s said in the video: ultimately, it’s all about you fright fanatics! So here are some of the standout genre (and a couple of non-genre) films that we think would be worth your time.

FAHcub

CUB (ARTSPLOITATION FILMS)

It was only a weekend camping trip for a troop of innocent cub scouts and their older teen chaparones. What could go wrong? Well, start with a evil psychopathic killer, add his ferel young protoge, have them place some ingenious traps in the woods and the results are kind of violent and bloody. This imaginative fairy tale draws on such influences as Lord of the Rings, Friday the 13th and The Devil’s Backbone as it tells the story of 12-year-old outcast Sam who, along with his fellow cub scouts, are forced to confront unspeakable evil!. A wildly entertaining “killer in the woods” actioner that has been a hit in it festival run.

THE SECRET LIFE OF MARILYN MONROE (Lionsgate)

Based on The New York Times best-seller, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe begins with the young Norma Jeane Mortenson as she battles a lonely, loveless existence with an absent and mentally ill mother. She ultimately reinvents herself as the sex symbol of an era. A fragile artist, she is very different from the larger-than-life image she portrayed. The great secret of Marilyn’s life is that her mother, Gladys (Sarandon), remained a vital — and troubling — part of her world. Her marriages to Joe DiMaggio (Morgan) and Arthur Miller collapse in part due to her own inner demons and the onslaught of her mother’s illness. As Marilyn cares for her mother, her obsession with President John F. Kennedy leads to a breakdown and hospitalization. Still, she gives the performance of her life as Marilyn Monroe.

LA GRANDE BOUFFE (Arrow)

Four friends, played by international superstars Marcello Mastroianni (Fellini’s 8½), Michel Piccoli (Belle de jour), Ugo Tognazzi (Barbarella) and Philippe Noiret (Zazie dans le métro) retreat to a country mansion where they determine to eat themselves to death whilst engaging in group sex with prostitutes and a local school teacher (Andréa Ferréol, The Tin Drum), who seems to be up for anything…

At once jovial and sinister, the film’s jet-black humour has a further twist as the reputed actors (whose characters use their own names) buck their respectable trend for a descent into fart-filled chaos that delivers a feast for the eyes and mind.

SOAKED IN BLEACH (MVD Entertainment Group)

Soaked In Bleach, a docudrama by Benjamin Statler, reveals the events behind Kurt Cobain’s death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband (Kurt Cobain) only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound), but doubts have circulated for twenty years as to the legitimacy of this ruling, especially due to the work of Mr. Grant, a former L.A. County Sheriff’s detective, who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations, interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artifacts from the 1994 case.
