Horror/action hybrids are always a gamble to me. Sometimes they tend to discard all horror elements and end up being stale (see I, FRANKENSTEIN and the majority of the UNDERWORLD films), but then again, there are ones that combine both elements to be a great combination of both (CONSTANTINE). One film that has been on our radar for a while that is finally gearing up to hit theaters this October 23rd via Lionsgate, is the Breck Eisner-helmed horror/action film THE LAST WITCH HUNTER, which looks like a really fun time. Dealing with an immortal witch hunter played by Vin Diesel, the film spans ages and features a pretty impressive cast, including Elijah Wood, Michael Caine and HONEYMOON‘s Rose Leslie. Personally, I’m a fan of Eisner’s remake of the George A. Romero film THE CRAZIES, and think he’s got the chops to make a very character-driven horror/action film and judging from the brand new trailer for THE LAST WITCH HUNTER, it looks like he did just that.
The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including KAULDER, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful QUEEN WITCH, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the QUEEN curses KAULDER with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today KAULDER is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to KAULDER, the QUEEN WITCH is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.
