EXPLOITATION ALLEY: WOMEN IN CAGES (1971)!!

women_in_cages_xlgFor the first Exploitation Alley article of 2015, I decided to bring in the New Year with a bang, so it would only seem appropriate that the movie I chose should have a lot of banging. And also start with some banging. No, really, there is a random sex scene during the film’s first five minutes that has no reason or serves a single purpose whatsoever.

So there’s that, and plus, Pam Grier is in it, so naturally, I have to write about it. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the film that would make all of your prude friends (as if you crazy kids would even have prudish friends) curl up and cry. It’s WOMEN IN CAGES time!!!!

Pam Grier, never taking shit from anybody.

When sweet little Carol “Jeff” Jeffries (Jennifer Gan) gets set up by her shitty excuse for a human boyfriend, Rudy (Charlie Davao), she finds herself becoming a new resident in a god-awful horrible women’s prison. Well, it seems pretty horrible, except that every one of the prisoners all seem to have a makeup and hair stylist. Not only that, but the dress code seems to be pretty lenient at the prison, so there’s that too. Tiny, adorable dresses that seem to not cover much of the prisoner’s butts and for some reason always seem to shred and rip right around the nipple areas of the ladies, but don’t let that distract you from the sweet Gerardo de Leon film that you are setting your eyes upon.

And as I previously mentioned, Pam Grier is in it as a sadistic guard named Alabama, a woman who isn’t shy about either making passionate love to, or torturing the prisoners medieval style. The mood of this flick can best be described as  ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK from hell and on some seriously good crack. Not only are the women in danger behind the walls of the brutal prison, but they have no choice but to break out and risk terrible deaths, or stay in the hellhole and be the subjects of sexual exploitation and dangerous situations. I know, right? Tough choice. Jeff obviously is the smart one, so she teams up with her cellmates to get the hell out of there. When they decide it’s now or never, drug addict Stokes (Roberta Collins), Alabama’s lover turned torture victim Theresa (Sofia Moran), and Sandy (Judith M. Brown) pull off a semi-flawless escape…then the excitement starts. The women must navigate through the jungle outside of the prison, avoiding the wild pack of overweight men who take pleasure in killing prison escapees (seriously, they look like zombies when they attack), and they must run like crazy to safety.

When it all goes down, it’s a pretty crazy event and it enjoyable as hell.

These ladies just love to beat the hell out of each other.

Sure, there are plenty of women actually inside cages, but they should have just called this film “Boobs all over the place” or “Nothing but boobs and girl fights,” because that is pretty much the entire point of WOMEN IN CAGES. There is definitely no shortage of nudity and the boobs are as common as the overuse of the word “bro” at a frat party, but that doesn’t necessarily mean this film doesn’t have a bad ass plot, or intense action sequences. It not only has a strong, and very solid premise, it’s absolutely full of violence and women doing what they do best…kicking major ass. It’s an exploitation gem that shouldn’t be missed by anyone who is a fan of the Exploitation genre. WOMEN IN CAGES is highly entertaining, sexy (well, sometimes sexy, most of the time it’s just fucking disturbing), and bleeds early ’70s cinema. Great stuff.
