Jeremy Berg’s THE DEVICE was one of my favorite genre films of this year (review), and it’s the dedication of Berg, co-writer/producer John Portanova, and producer Matt Medisch (known collectively as The October People) that made THE DEVICE, their previous film THE INVOKING and basically everything they have had their hands in really give of a genuine love for the genre/craft approach to filmmaking. Bypassing typical low-budget genre filmmaking full of the same thing, Berg, Portanova and Medisch put out films that feel like they would fit perfectly alongside more subtle genre films, ones that get under your skin more than just blasting you in the face like a lot of others do.
Like THE INVOKING, the upcoming DVD release of THE DEVICE is looking to give fans of the film an experience that goes past just the film itself, with a handful of commentaries (including one with FIRE IN THE SKY screenwriter, Tracy Torme) that have me anxious to check the disc out myself.
Portanova and Co. were nice enough to give us the lowdown on what goodies await fans of THE DEVICE, when it hits DVD on December 16th from Image Entertainment.
“Abby and Rebecca Powell haven’t seen each other since a traumatic event in their youth ripped them apart. Reunited for the first time in over a decade, the sisters take a trip to spread their mother’s ashes at a secluded lake. As the sisters reconnect and try to heal old wounds, something waits in the nearby woods. A strange object, made not by the hands of man, beckons them to it. As they begin to try and unlock its secrets, Abby is plagued by nightmares of an alien presence that seem all too real. Little do the sisters realize that this object is actually a device, one with a purpose too horrible to comprehend. As the events of the past and the present begin to merge, new discoveries will threaten to tear apart their newly reformed family, and the inhuman creators of the device will attempt to finish a terrible experiment begun years before.”
The DVD edition of the film will present the movie in 16×9-enhanced 2.35:1 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, plus these special features:
-Audio Commentary by writer/director Jeremy Berg, producer Matt Medisch, and writer/producer John Portanova
-Audio Commentary by actors Angela DiMarco, David S. Hogan, and Kate Alden
-Audio Commentary by Tracy Torme, screenwriter of Fire in the Sky and Intruders
“With the DVD of The Device, my fellow producers at The October People and I wanted to make sure we provided informative extras that cover all aspects of the filmmaking process,” says writer/producer John Portanova. “For information on the alien abduction phenomena in reality and on-screen, we were lucky enough to sit down with screenwriter Tracy Torme for one of the commentary tracks. We’ve been fans of Tracy’s work in the genre for a long time and it always bummed us out when his alien films were released on DVD as barebones discs. We got some great stories from him about the making of Fire in the Sky as well as the Dan Curtis miniseries Intruders, both of which he wrote. I know many people of our generation were given quite a few sleepless nights thanks to the abduction sequences in these films and it’s great that they’ll finally be able to hear about some behind-the-scenes information on them from someone who was with the alien craze of the 80s almost from day one.”
