NAKED LADIES & PUPPETRY: A LOOK AT THE FILMS OF DUSTIN WAYDE MILLS

Horror fans are constantly complaining about the overabundance of sequels, remakes, and an all around lack of originality.  Unless you’re “in the know” within the film industry, finding new, unique, and interesting horror films can be quite tasking.  Well, Icons of Fright readers, have I got a treat for you.

Dustin Wayde Mills of Dustin Mills Productions is a filmmaker specializing in low budget horror, puppetry, creature fx, and visual fx.  According to an interview, he’s a self proclaimed “grand purveyor of cinematic nightmares driven by the essence of midnight and thirst can only be slaked by the sweet liquid souls of the innocent. Or more simply,  a dude from Ohio who likes making weird movies.”  After years of experience as a professional graphic designer, videographer, and photographer, Dustin Wayde Mills delivers big budget visuals on a micro-budget. To quote the official company statement, “Whether it’s Doom Metal creatures in horror landscapes, punk rock puppet porno, or beautiful animated tales of dreams and loss; DMP has you covered.”  Mills’ style is completely unique in every sense of the word, and while his films may not be the most universally accessible, for those that “get it,” Mills makes some of the most enjoyable horror films one can experience.

Do his films contain gratuitous six minute scenes of nudity that seemingly comes out of nowhere? Yes. Do his films contain dialogue that no one would logically ever speak but it makes you laugh until you’re in tears anyway? Yes. Do his films really utilize foul-mouthed puppets? YES. Did he really make a film where a woman gives birth to a pile of bloodied up plastic Easter eggs? ABSOLUTELY.

Unlike the low-budget horror gorefests that seem to be made solely for shock value, Dustin Mills manages to retain a fun atmosphere while delivering over the top gore.  Low budget, DIY, and utilizing a similar rotation of actors, Mills’ filmography becomes a package of fun and familiarity.  These films may make Troma look like Kubrick but with the miniscule time and budget that he works with, you can tell he’s already light-years ahead of what anyone else in that sub-genre is cranking out.  If you want a funny, gruesome, and entertaining evening, support super low-budget filmmaking and check out Dustin Wayde Mills.

I have seen films like this from a company called Low Budget Pictures. They have been making movies for over 20 years.

Yep! Chris Seaver! He’s a good friend of mine, actually. If you haven’t yet, check out his new one PHANTOM OF THE GRINDHOUSE. It’s a bit more tame than his other flicks, but I LOVED it. The last time I saw some of Low Budget Pictures’ flicks was when I was introduced to Dustin Mills’ films. Pairing these two together would make an awesome double feature, actually.
