AMC’s sister network Sundance Channel is jumping into the horror ring. With their continued push into original scripted properties, the network has just picked up the French zombie drama THE RETURNED. The series will be presented in eight episodes and will be debuting on Halloween, just two weeks following the season four premiere of AMC’S THE WALKING DEAD.
Based on the feature film LES REVENANTS by Robin Campillo, the series is set in a French mountain town where we find a random group of people in a state of confusion as they attempt to make a return to their homes. The twist is, these people have been dead for a few years now and no one is expecting them to arrive for supper. The story unfolds as these folks return from the grave and attempt reintegration back with their families and loved ones. Of course, with any zombie fair, something gruesome also happens coinciding their return as people start to die in the town. These murders begin to look like the work of a serial killer from the community’s past.
I don’t know about you, but this concept seems like a fresh take on the zombie genre as there is literally no mention of brain eating. It’s also worth noting how the French have influenced the horror genre in the past decade, so this series has really piqued my interest. Apparently, I’m not alone as the series received rave reviews and ratings in France and the UK.
“We decided to take zombies to a new and utterly original level — we made them French!” Sundance president Sarah Barnett said. “THE RETURNED is smart entertainment that shocks and entertains at every turn. We think our audience will love how this series grounds the supernatural in deeply human emotions.”
With the intent to capitalize on the trend of horror themed programming on television, THE RETURNED will premiere Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. and air Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Sundance Channel.
