I love the sub-genre in horror that covers films having to do with cults. I’ve been thoroughly enthralled with them since childhood, and that’s not going away anytime soon. With all of that said, when news broke that Ti West, director of THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL and THE INNKEEPERS was set to team up with indie-darlings AJ Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Amy Siemetz and Kate Lyn Sheil (wait..this is gearing up to be a YOU’RE NEXT reunion, isn’t it?), my interests were definitely acquired.
Today, thanks to EW, the Jonestown Massacre-like premise now has a poster to go with it, and yes, fright fiends, it is a good one!
THE SACRAMENT makes its debut at the upcoming Venice Film Festival, and then at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“From acclaimed writer/director Ti West (THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, THE INNKEEPERS) and horror master Eli Roth, THE SACRAMENT follows two Vice media correspondents as they set out to document their friend’s search to find his missing sister. They travel outside of the United States to an undisclosed location where they are welcomed into the world of “Eden Parish,” a self-sustained rural utopia with nearly 200 members. At the centre of this small, religious, socialist community is a mysterious leader known only as “Father.” As their friend reunites with his sister, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. ”
