I know, I know..before you fright fiends sound off, crucifying me with “WHAT?! The A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake sucked, it’s not a classic!”, or anything similar to that, hear me out. You’re VERY right on both of those statements, but it’s not like I’m going to do a “Classic”, “Medium Classic” and “Downright disgusting” section of trailers, so I’m just going to throw this one in with the others. The Michael Bay/Platinum Dunes produced remake of Wes Craven’s classic will forever go down, in my opinion, as the biggest curveball of all time. A “curveball?” you ask?, watch this trailer, and we’ll discuss it.
See what I mean? That teaser blew me away when it premiered, and I instantly became excited and anxious as hell to see it. I called my brother the night before it opened, and asked if he wanted to see the first showing in town. I picked him up an hour early, drove to the theater WAY too fast, and literally did cartwheels outside of the car. “FINALLY, a great remake”, I thought.
Well, the rest is history. We all know that like many other fans, my initial thoughts and hopefulness for the film would be proven wrong, and instead of a “great remake”, fans were subjected to quite possibly, the worst remake of all time (yes, the worst). Every moment from the opening scene, to the closing credits, a downright mess. I don’t think a single person involved in that film genuinely knew what made the original film work so very well.
With that being said though, I do stand by my initial opinions of the trailer, as it’s a solid, well done teaser, and though it ended up failing to live up to ANYONE’s expectations, it’s still fun to watch from time to time. The film, though..that’s a different story.
