“Don’t fall asleep” — words to live by for Elm Street teens. Not a problem for fans wide awake with fear (and glee) as they experience these 7 Nightmare movies released from 1984 to 2003. Each features Robert Englund’s masterfully macabre incarnation of slouch-hatted, razor-fingered Freddy Krueger, who mixes wicked wit with even wickeder mayhem as he haunts teens when they’re asleep and most vulnerable. A newspaper article about children who died after having fearsome nightmares provided the real-life springboard for filmmaker Wes Craven’s breakthrough series. Perhaps that underlying reality helps make these shockers so unnerving. Or maybe it’s just that we all like a good scare…and that this series consistently, imaginatively delivers some of the best.
All original Nightmares on 5 discs. Plus the new featurette – The Tales and Crimes of Freddy Krueger”
In celebration of Warner Bros. releasing their brand new bluray boxset of the complete A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series (which you can easily pick up HERE on March 5th ), all of us at ICONS OF FRIGHT decided to work together and bring you a few articles, reviews, and various other things throughout the week, as an homage to our favorite dream stalker, Freddy Krueger. Justin has his FREDDY’S NIGHTMARES articles coming, I have a few top 10 lists and a “Look Back at” article on their way, and so on. So, to kick things off, I’m bringing you what is in my opinion, the TOP 10 NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET KILLS!!
10– GRETA’S LAST MEAL in ANOES 5: THE DREAM CHILD
Freddy gave Greta, a teenager who is continually taunted by her mom about her figure, more than her fair share to eat, when after falling asleep, Greta was forced to dine on herself by Krueger. The death scene is definitely a fun one to watch, especially the unrated cut of it.
9– PHILLIP’s PUPPET DEATH in ANOES 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS
After falling asleep, Phillip, a talented young sculptor locked up in the Westin Hills Psychiatry Hospital, meets his end, when Freddy uses his veins as strings and makes Phillip fall to his death from the top of the hospital as the other kids watch on. It’s gruesome as hell and like pretty much every death in DREAM WARRIORS, is visually wonderful.
8–COACH SCHNEIDER’S TOWELS AND BALLS DEATH in ANOES 2: FREDDY’S REVENGE
Coach Schneider, what a guy. Already knee deeep in probably one of the most homoerotic horror films of all time, bully Schneider got what was coming to him, when after spotting Jesse at a gay bar, the mean as hell coach makes him run laps and then hit the showers. While in his office, balls and equipment begin to fly at Schneider and eventually two ropes drag the coach to the showers, tie him and up and strip him (uh…). Freddy, using Jesse’s body, kills the coach with a couple slashes to the back and alas, no more mean Mr. Schneider. (*couldn’t find a video clip of it, so an image will have to do*)
7– MRS. THOMPSON’s DOOR DEATH in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Just when we think everything is A-ok and the sun is shining, what happens to the newly sober mother of our lead heroine Nancy? Freddy decides to put a damper on it all, by pulling her right through a small as hell window in the door, before locking Nancy in the car and speeding off. Pretty rad stuff.
6–DAN’S MOTORCYCLE OF DEATH in ANOES 5: THE DREAM CHILD
This one would definitely be higher up on my list if the next ones weren’t so damn rad. When Dan, the boyfriend of Part 5’s heroine Alice jumps on his motorcycle to rush to see her, he dozes off (naturally), and it gives us one of the craziest deaths in whole series. The motorcyle turns into an almost Giger-looking death bike, sending wires and bike parts into Dan’s skin, slowly turning him into a ghost rider looking hybrid of human and motorcyle, eventually leading to him crashing. It was heavily edited for the theatrical release, but the unedited death is a pretty intense one.
5– DEBBIE’S ROACH MOTEL DEATH in ANOES 4: THE DREAM MASTER
One of the most visually extravagant deaths, weightlifting fanatic Debbie met her end when Freddy recalled an earlier reveal that Debbie was grossed out by bugs, and turned Debbie into one, her arms splitting and becoming those of insects. As the half bug/half human Debbie scrambles around, the camera shows us that Debbie’s basically in a roach motel, which Freddy, in yet another mean as hell antic, squishes it. Really cool stuff.
4– JENNIFER’S BIG BREAK in ANOES 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS
A fan favorite in the series, TV-obsessed Jennifer’s death in THE DREAM WARRIORS is also Robert Englund’s favorite kill in the series. Trying her damndest to stay awake, Jennifer ultimately fails and closes her eyes, just long enough to fall asleep and meet her demise. After the TV begins to act strange, showing Zsa Zsa Gabor get slashed on a talk show (yes!), Jennifer gets up and smacks it a bit, before two arms burst out, grabbing her while Freddy’s head pops out of the top and says what is probably the 2nd best line in the series (I’ll tell what I think is #1 in a bit) “This is it Jennifer, your big break on TV, WELCOME TO PRIME TIME BITCH!” then slams her head right into the screen. Pure greatness.
3– TINA’S BLOODY CEILING MURDER in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Set up to think that we’re supposed to follow HER in the film, when Tina dies at the hands of Krueger in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, it’s both shocking and gory as hell. After waking up (or so she thinks), Tina hears something outside and decides (while wearing just a shirt…logic?) to investigate, and ends up meeting Freddy in an alley. With his arms extended, Freddy gets closer and closer to her and when Tina says “please god..”, Freddy replies with what is not only the best line in the whole series, but is also in my opinion, the best line of all time, as he holds up his claw and devilishly says: “THIS is god”. Freddy begins to chase Tina and when she wakes up(yet again), Freddy’s next to her, and proceeds to drag her up the wall, slashing her repeatedly, as Tina’s boyfriend and rebel Rod stares in horror. It’s a visually amazing sequence, and is topped off when Tina’s body falls, bloody as hell, giving us an all bets off feeling in the movie.
2– JOEY’S WET DREAM in ANOES 4: THE DREAM MASTER
A survivor of the third installment, Joey met his end in THE DREAM MASTER, when he fell alseep on his waterbed while staring at a risque poster on his wall. Out of nowhere, Billy Idol’s Fatal Charm begins to blare, the bed begins to shake, and when Joey pulls his sheets back, a naked woman is swimming in it staring at him. Like any horny teenager, Joey thinks nothing of it, until she disappears and Freddy slashes out, grabbing Joey and says “How’s THIS for a wet dream?”, taking Joey under. When Joey’s mom pulls the sheets back sometime later, she sees Joey’s dead body stuck inside of the waterbed. I’ve always loved this one, definitely one of my favorites.
1– GLEN’S BLOODY BED in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
The death that is by far my favorite in the series is that of Nancy’s boyfriend Glen (played by Johnny Depp). When Glen dies after falling asleep and being pulled into his bed, the visuals of the HUGE stream of blood flowing upwards to the ceiling is the one death that always seems to pop into my head when thinking of the series. It’s a shocking, gory scene, and like Tina’s death, it makes you think that things just might not work out for the best at the end of the movie. It’s one of the most invented scenes in horror history and as far as I’m concerned, it’s the best in the series.
So there ya have it. My ten favorite A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET kills. Are there any kills that you Fright Fiends prefer over these? If so, then sound off and let us know, and don’t forget to pick up the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET bluray boxset on March 5th!
