BEYOND FRIGHT: Song Of The Week – METALLICA “Holier Than Thou”

Whew! Sorry I’m a little late with this. Been a super hectic week, but that’s no excuse so let’s get right to it! Instead of looking at this as the rockin’ tune to kick off your weekend, let’s instead look at it as the rockin’ tune to kick off your work week! And the way I came to this is usually the way I pick all these songs; they just come on randomly when I’ve got my iTunes on random play in the car and I’m reminded of what the song means to me.

So this entry? METALLICA‘s “Holier Than Thou” from their self titled “Black Album”. Why? Well, a few reasons. For starters, “And Justice For All” is by far my favorite Metallica record. The songs are long & epic, the riffs and lyrics are intricate and there’s just so much packed into that 60 minutes of music. Where does a band go from there? The only logical route – Refining those compositions to a more confined running time and with a commercial sensibility. And it worked, because with their first single off the “Black Album” “Enter Sandman”, the band solidified themselves as arena rock legends. However, at one point, internally within the band, “Holier Than Thou” was discussed as the first single. Surely not as commercial as “Enter Sandman”, but the track, fast and furious bridges the gap perfectly between And Justice and this record making it an ideal choice. It wasn’t to be as a single, but it still stands out as one of the “Black Album”‘s stellar tracks. Plus a knock-off version of it was used for the ARMY OF DARKNESS trailer (embedded below), so I always think of EVIL DEAD and Ash kickin’ ass when I hear it. Let’s have a listen, then watch the ARMY OF DARKNESS trailer together, shall we?

Not a bad tune, but if I’m picking one off the Black Album, I have to go with “Sad but True,” one of my top 5 Metallica tunes.  Or if I wanted to go off the beaten path, “Of Wolf and Man,” which certainly takes it back from beyond fright into the horror fold.

“Of Wolf And Man” is a pretty solid pick too. I rather like “Don’t Tread On Me” as well. This one only edged out the other tracks because of its association with ARMY OF DARKNESS which I have a soft spot for!

As ARMY OF DARKNESS is my favorite of the three EVIL DEAD movies, I certainly see why you’d dig on that.
