Before Renny Harlin further transformed Freddy Krueger into a wise cracking anti-hero with the MTV-toned A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, he came to America to make a horror film for Empire Pictures (one of my favorite, now defunct, studios’ who brought us Terrorvision, Re-Animator, and Dolls to name a few) titled PRISON. It stars a then up-and-coming Viggo Mortensen, features some truly gnarly FX work from makeup wizard John Carl Buechler, and has a memorable appearance by Kane Hodder!
This film has long been barred from receiving any sort of release outside the VHS realm (I still own my New World tape!); until now! Scream Factory is set to give PRISON a home video resurgence next year onto a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray & DVD! Fans of Empire Pictures’ output (like myself) should rejoice, especially since Scream Factory is bringing From Beyond and Terrorvision to Blu-ray next year as well. It’s a hell of a time to be horror & video junkie fright fans!
