This is it! Norman Bates and “mother” are back! As someone who spent the better part of 3 years researching every aspect of the PSYCHO movies for THE PSYCHO LEGACY documentary, I’m not only thrilled by the upcoming film HITCHCOCK, which chronicles the making of PSYCHO, but now comes confirmed news of a brand new prequel television series titled THE BATES MOTEL for A&E.
And man, that pilot script must be good. The network has bypassed the pilot and testing phase and are going straight into production on a 10 episode first season which will show us the formative years of Norman Bates and his domineering mother Norma. The series will fully explore their complicated relationship and show us how it led to Norman (as portrayed previously by the late, great Anthony Perkins) became the murderer we know from the original PSYCHO. The series comes from Lost‘s Carlton Cuse and Friday Night Lights‘ Kerry Ehrin is said to be in a contemporary setting and is being dubbed a cross between Twin Peaks and Smallville.
“We are proud to be partnering with Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin on their thrilling reinvention of one of the most compelling characters in cinematic history,” A&E president and GM Bob DeBitetto and A&E exec vp programming Dave McKillop said in a joint statement announcing the news Monday. “It’s a provocative project from two of the best storytellers in the business, and we’re looking forward to getting started.”
Cuse and Ehrin will executive produce the Universal Television and Carlton Cuse Productions effort. Anthony Cipriano has penned the pilot script. Pre-production and casting will begin immediately for a 2013 premiere on A&E!
Quite frankly, television these days tends to be better than most Hollywood movies, and with shows like DEXTER, THE WALKING DEAD and TRUE BLOOD, not to mention the upcoming HANNIBAL series, we’re very much looking forward to a full season of THE BATES MOTEL.
